Looked forward to our afternoon trip to The Lion and Key as I like a good pint of real ale what was on off was beer from a local brewery and not my cup of tea,my partner like a good lager but again nothing on offer., Not sure but possibly has had a change of ownership and trying to make a go of it by reducing quality I will probably not go back for a while wait till the get some decent ale in Pete Lincolnshire

First time in Hull. Picked this pub at random. Intended just to have a beer or two but then saw the menu and decided to eat as well. The very friendly young lady running the bar helped me make my choice and stone-me if it wasn't one or the best pub sandwiches I've ever had. Anywhere. Interesting range of local beers on tap and with the trip to take in the ceiling decor alone.....rarely so easy to give a pub 5-stars....👌

Great place for real ales, good choice of beers, it's sister pub opposite Fretwells is great for real ales.

Decent location and while I didn't know the girls name I visited on the 26th of January 2024 and she wore white and black swirls and she was lovely and what you expect from a server. Engaging smiling. A credit to the lion and key

On a film-set street, 30 seconds from the hustle and bustle but seems 30 minutes away, lives a gem of an old school pub. This gem has some great beers but its main selling point is the food. The place was packed which was a good sign. We rang the bell on the wall (a nod to the old Irish pub days) and was served some delicious pub style fish and chips. Not been asked “skin on or off” for a long, long time but shows attention to detail. Enjoy!

We visited yesterday, as my son in law always loves the chance to go for the fish and chips here. Living in Germany, he doesn't get decent fish and chips often. My Haddock goujons were massive, and beautiful. All the food was excellent, and the service was top notch. Being of " advanced years " my wife and I got a discount on our bill, which was very welcome. The only slight niggle was the smaller than usual choice of beers, with no dark ones on draught. The ones we had were lovely though, so not a big problem.

Wish I'd read the most recent Review saying it was closed We planned visit only to find place was all shut up. Outside lights were on (at 1pm) but a 360 round place showed " no way in"

Not had the food yet but the fish and chips is meant to be excellent.

I eat there quite regularly as part of social events and the food is always excellent and good value in my opinion. I particularly like the fish and chips and their vegetarian options. Service is excellent and friendly, and the place has always been buzzing when I've been in.

Great home cooked quality food.

Must be looking at the wrong photos/reviews? Told not to preorder but when we arrived for a meal booked weeks in advance key items not available. The food that came was poorly presented, much smaller than photos or was just dry. My macaroni cheese looked nothing like photos and was baked dry. With this in mind, it's overpriced.

Fantastic pub, the atmosphere from the moment you walked in was great, the building and decoration just has to be seen. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was all freshly cooked and tasted great.

I'm never disappointed. The best beers and best food. Menu is small, which means the quality of the food is excellent.

Went for lunch. The food was excellent, I recommend the fish and chips. All the staff were friendly and the beer was lovely and a reasonable choice. There was an added bonus for us oldies in that we got 20% off the bill. Highly recommend.

Great pub, what else do you need?

Another of my occasional visits to Hull and another visit to the Lion & Key. And, as before, we were not surprised. Both dishes we had were delicious as were the ales, and the bill represented excellent value for this very high standard of food. I'll repeat my previous comment as it's still totally true: this is where I have had absolutely the BEST fish and chips meal ever, anywhere. Outstanding.

Excellent Old Town pub with a friendly and relaxing atmosphere at lunchtime. I’d forgotten how much I like this place. Great choice of beer & my all time favourite chicken curry half-n-half on the menu. I won’t leave it so long before my next visit.

Popped into Lion n Key on Sunday , feeling in a snack, grazing mood! Opted for club sandwich , wow..Full of Italian meats, salad, chillie jam( optiona) on toasted ciabatta bread...fresh, tasty, massive...I shared it with partner...PERFECT! Ordered from the bar, from a very pleasant, friendly, young woman...A credit to Lion n Key! to be fair ALL the staff on duty were very Wellcoming! And if you are pension age...you get 20per cent Off! Thank you all...for a great eating out experience. RESPECT!

Great place to chill and chat, with a fantastic choice of drinks

If you are looking for a lovely pub with great pub food and decent range of beers and lovely service then this is the place. I had the Hull Chippy which had half a haddock, and a fried potato thing and with mushy peas. So bad for the heart but so tasty. My wife had 'half and half' for the first time with her chilli con carne. Brilliant idea.

Loved the food, lots of it. Staff are friendly and we liked the ambience of the place. Decently priced menu, drinks as well. Interesting decor, not too modernised just felt good. Car park very close (£1 an hour). We were visiting Hull and liked the area the pub was in.

Usually the food is excellent but the Curry I had was mainly potatoes with the expected rice.

Great place to visit for beer and food. Staff are always friendly. Next time I will have to try something other than fish and chips but they are really good.

Looks a nice place. Food reasonable and some great classics. Beer very good indeed. Only thing I don't like is the actual paying double for a double - quite old fashioned approach and pushes up the price quite a bit if you have a thirsty gin-loving wife.

Great food and great selection of Ales

On the 9th of September we went in the Lion and key and looked at the menu and we were going to buy a pizzas but unfortunately when I was going to order the staff told me they had run out of pizza so me and my son was very disappointed that they were unable to do some pizzas for our order. Then we was also told that the kitchen starts at 5pm on a sat and Sunday.

A lovely and characterful pub in Hills old cobbled High St. Was recommended to go there for lunch by someone at a local museum I visited. It's an old and impressive building. You will see the inside by viewing my photos. It had a nice relaxed vibe and I received a friendly welcome from the young lady behind the bar. I ordered fish and chips for lunch, again please see photos. The pub had an excellent selection of ales,beers etc and an extensive range of spirits. Food came out in good time. Nice chunky piece of battered Haddock, chunky fries and mushy peas and a homemade tartare sauce which was really good. Along with a pint of lager shandy I spent £17. Their menu had vegetarian options plus there was a specials . Other meals I saw come out looked plentiful one being a curry .

Nice pub located in the old town of Hull. Interior was very characterful with beer mats lining the ceiling and other items on shelves. We ordered fish and chips which arrived in reasonable time. Perfect portion for lunchtime and felt full enough after. Would visit again.

The Lion and key is a fantastic pub. There is a good selection of cask conditioned real ales that you won't find anywhere else. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. The food is excellent, if you want to eat it's advisable to book as it gets very busy. There is an outside courtyard seating area, no pub games. A great friendly pub, not open Monday. Highly recommended.

What a great place, can't fault it 😁 Service was great, very welcoming and friendly. The atmosphere is great and even though I am a new customer it feels like it's my local already 😂 Food was fantastic we had the Chippy Special which was brilliant but if you go for a salad expect a HUGE salad. Service was very quick. Selection of beers and drinks was great - highly recommend visiting

The Lion and Key never fails me. Good food, lovely staff and a comfortable place to be in. The menu has changed since COVID but even so the quality and choice of food is varied and freshly prepared. This is a regular haunt of mine and I hope will remain so.

We went The Deep and Lifestreet museum on Saturday. And we found this place. I checked Tripadvisor and there are so many good reviews. And the opposite pub lady recommended here too. So we just walked in. Fortunately we could have seat. It was amazing. Staffs are all very friendly and good services. Food were amazing. My partner had a cottage pie and I had a fish and chips. He told me the cottage pie was fabulous . My fish and chips was one of my best fish and chips I’ve ever had. Everything was perfect. Nice atmosphere, nice location and fantastic nostalgic interior as well. 10 out of 10. I definitely come back again and May be dinner time next.

Atmospheric old pub nestled in amongst the buildings of Hull old town. Tasty simple lunch of local Hull patties with a garlic dip.

Went here whilst I was staying up in Hull. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Good prices as well, but I'm used to London so everything send cheap. The food was exactly what you would expect and portion sizes where just right. The old town of Hull has so many pubs to go to. If you visit this one you won't be disappointed.

Really nice little pub. Lots of different beers on tap, though only bottled cider. Food is delicious and home made too. Definitely come here instead of all the chains.

Great range of ales and decent food

Popped in on the off chance for late lunch on Saturday. Busy with lots of reservations. Staff welcomed us and found us a table giving us about two hours. Food was piping hot and lovely home-made style. Traditional ales. Setting is ecleptic history time capsule with something to look at in every direction including the ceiling. A true gem of a pub. We will be back.

It is a long time since we have eaten at the Lion and Key, probably a couple of years. We arranged to meet friends there for a meal. When we saw some of the most recent reviews we were a bit concerned that this lovely...

Great service very comfortable considering how many customers were in there, good beer too, highly recommended. Stairlift to heaven, cracking pint.

Lovely pub and staff! Fish and chips was amazing, only downside is with having a young baby there isn't any baby changing facilities.

Nice pub in old town. Disappointed that what we wanted to eat (chicken pie) had sold out. Wife had fisk and chips and I had mushrooms on bruschetta. Both very nice and only empty plates left. Decent range of ales. Very good service from the team

Very good pub, particularly if you like real ale/cask beer and a pub with character. A wider choice of lager on draught would appeal to my wife.

Located by River Hull. Within short walking distance to city centre of Hull. A pub suitable for some casual drinks with friends.

Love this pub, only really go for lunch but have been once or twice for a night out in Hull. Not a huge menuapsrt from the pizza menu, but I can recommend the simple but tasty ham sandwich and chips very filling and the fish & chip sandwich delicious. Service is great and the atmosphere is relaxed. Would definitely recommend.

I’ve heard that the pub does good food, so me and 5 friends went for dinner about 7pm. I ordered veggie Thai green curry, my friends ordered pizza.. mine showed up, was a bowl of rice, some new potatoes, a few wedges, hardly any veg...
