Really worst takeaway I have had, the food was so sweet it was inedible. I expect a savory dish . Truly bad food

FANTASTIC FOOD - prepared fresh swifty and wonderful flavours. Speaking to the Owner/Chef - the secret is the menu is made up of handmade quality products... TASTY!!! Local Delivery Service too.

Their food qaulity has gone down, their portions have gone down.... BUT their prices have gone up! No longer a viable takaway, sorry but there are 2 other Chinese's I will try from now on.

Great gluten free delivered takeaway !! Asked them with a previous order to include a menu indicating what was gluten free and to my surprise it included most of the menu!! We have enjoyed many a takeaway from the Lantern now safely reassured it's safe for me to eat! Food always arrives hot and fresh, generous portion sizes! Even included some fortune cookies which whilst they weren't GF my husband certainly enjoyed them!

worst Chinese iv ever had!! made me sick after a few mouth fulls!! very greasy,food full of liquid (tasted loke dish warer) .. rice under cooked! not good food at all!! Will not be ordering again!

Excellent service and excellent food. We placed a large telephone order for 7 hungry adults who were staying in the middle of nowhere about 5 miles from Newtown just as the football semi final started. The food was delivered by half time, it was hot it was delicious and we had a gift of prawn crackers! Great service, good price

Definitely my favourite place to get a Chinese. Staff are friendly and polite. Food tasted amazing however I did have leftovers for dinner the following day as there was so much.

1st time we have managed to get through on the phone since it opened! Absolutely vile, chow mein tasted of dishwater, curry was bland, Salt and pepper wings looked raw and were tasteless, The peking sauce on the ribs just tasted of ketchup, can't even be bothered to describe the rest. Worst £40 Ive spent. Wanted delivery as our car Is off road. Will defo just walk to town in future and deal with cold food from the long walk home from our usual Chinese least it will be tasty. Very disappointed.

Food is nice but when I say no onions I do expect to have no onions. They then say I can have a price reduction on my next order but when I ring up for a delivery, they aren't doing deliveries when we are only over 2 miles away so how do I claim my discount exactly? Edited to now a one star as after being told "NO DELIVERY" another 5 times..............why offer delivery in the first place??

Food is great but out of five meals we've had one delivery, not via choice mind and we only live 3 miles from the restaurant but can never get food delivered bit of a joke really considering as it states no contact delivery on the add

Brilliant food and excellent service

Had food for me and some mates. Everyone loved it and there was plenty left. We would recommend The Lantern to anyone who comes round. The staff was friendly and the food was cooked quickly. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Had the pinapple duck and mixed meat/special fried rice, the sauce the duck dish was in had a nice strong flavour and the rice was pretty decent too, generous chunks of meat in both dishes. 100% will go again, tonnes better than the other Chinese I tried in Newtown that was so disgusting I couldn't even eat it.

Best beef in black beans souce nuddles, ribbs, spring rolls and don't forget the special fried rice...I am hungry again!!!

Lots of great veggie choices on offer here as well as omni versions. Best to book if you want to eat in, as the restaurant area isn't huge. The big table in the back is a bespoke piece that the owners commissioned using wood from their own land, and it's gorgeous. The food is good quality, tending to be on the spicier side. Service can be on the slower side, so may be worth phoning your order in.

I read the reviews before I choose to pop in here on my travels and thought I'll try it myself. Outside looks so run down but thought don't judge, went in got seated ordered a coffee. The table was grimy the napkins had oil spots, the seat cushions were stained the table salt and soy sauce jugs were disgusting. Then my coffee turned up, the walls and skirting boards were covered in food (no cleaning or deep cleaning in a long time). So guy comes for my order I said sorry but I'm not eating here. On the plus side the coffee was lovely. Wise trying to drink fast to leave asap the staff are then slagging you off for not eating. (Well clean up and people would eat). Sorry but never again will I return.

As a long time lover of Chinese/ Asian food and having travelled to many asiatic countries I’m constantly amazed at how many restaurants cannot live up to the simple, fresh tastes. Finding only 1 Chinese restaurant in Newtown I was prepared to be disappointed again. To my surprise, The Lantern delivered with outstanding excellence. Fresh, tasty and authentic. A described meal not on the menu was far better than expected. I once heard a good Chinese restaurant does not care about decor because they concentrate on the food. True! Definitely deserves a visit. And staff very friendly too. Highly recommend.

The Lantern noodle bar is in a quiet side street between Argos and the main shopping street, Broad St, and has a decent veggie range as well as fish and meat choices, so a good place to go for mixed groups with varying preferences/ needs. The owners have a long history and experience of running restaurants and it shows. Service can be a little slow at busier times, though, so be prepared to be patient. I've never had a bad meal here, although the green curry was hotter than I was expecting...such a wimp! There is a large car park just across the road from the Lantern so it's easily accessible for people with mobility issues, excepting the step at the main entrance.

Called in to order a takeaway meal. Man behind counter said they were closed????? Two women offered to sort something out??? Sort out if you are open or closed. Also bad smell from kitchen prep area. Won't be returning.

I've visited The Lantern several times with friends and family. There are many veggie options and a great selection generally. The owners are really friendly and always try to do their best for you. The large table at the rear of the restaurant was made from reclaimed wood from their own property.It's stunning! It's known as a noodle bar but the menu is far more varied. Recommended.

Order regular takeaways from here mostly very nice food at the usual going rate prices Only issues the constancy is sometimes a little below par? lets say i order my favourite 5 times over, 2 out of the 5 times the meal will seem quite different, with different sauce and different veg? sometimes very tasty sometimes a bit annoying? the main chef/ cook does seem to be the same person so i cant understand why this happens? 5 stars on a good day 3 star on a bad day.

Food was excellent. Various dietary needs and they coped very well. Food was so varied and very tasty. Service was fast and very friendly. We were a group of 12 and we waiting for nothing. I would highly recommend

The sweet and sour chicken was sweet and sour, and the chicken balls tasted tasty. I love the very polite and cool Mr Ho at the counter. Please go, very cheap and is the best Chinese in town.

We were staying 3 or 4 miles out of Newtown and placed an order half 7 in the evening. We were told it would be half an hour but the delivery arrived less than 20 minutes later. It was all still very hot and tasty. There was plenty of it too. We had the chef's special and it was well worth it. Recommended.

Regularly use The Lanterns free delivery service. Normally stick to their exquisite crispy beef or chicken. I had a change & ordered Meal For One A - Szechuan Beef, Sweet & sour Chicken, rice & crackers. Absolutely divine & makes your lips tingle Will definitely repeat this gourmet dish

Have recently started using the lantern as our Chinese takeaway as a friend of mine had recommended it and I am so glad I gave it a go. My partner has very high expectations when it comes to food and he said he cannot fault the food and even better they deliver at a small charge to Abermule. We tend to try something different each time and every thing we have trie is top notch!!!! Highly recommend the lantern.

Have popped to this Chinese a couple of times during our various stays in Newtown, as we are in one of the caravan parks just outside the town. Friendly staff and food was fab, definitely recommend. The waiting time was only around 10mins for a takeaway too, which was great for us hungry people :)

very polite on a telephone order, very polite when entering the premises, you can see your food freshly prepared and cooked, large choice of what to choose from. beef chow mein served in a box is a wow factor, and tonight i am going to try the salt and pepper spare ribs with them.

Whenever I visit, I always enjoy my meal and the service. Whenever I visit, the staff are always friendly and happy to help with any requests I have or any queries.

Been here a few times now can't get enough of the food, sitting in or a takeaway you will not be disappointed, always so friendly and great food no matter the choice and I have tried quite a lot on the menu the crispy chicken is a great different option than the duck and should be tried

Having travelled thru mid WALES on a glorious day out my wife and I fancied a Chinese restaurant meal. We went into the empty restaurant..Although we served promptly, Each of our meals were served heaped onto only one dish each.. The table was bland very basic, no atmosphere in the restaurant. I was given only 1 fork, , no spoon , no knife... The plates were near cold, there was no plate warmer.. At this point we new this was a very bad mistake..The food was poor and tasteless. If you were not aware it was a Chinese you could easily think you were sat in a transport cafe.. I have been in many much better transport cafes!!

The Lantern is run by the couple who used to own Dragon's Lair in Severn St, who are well known for the quality of their food. Their take away menu is now really good and very competitively priced due to much lower overheads.The Lantern is a refreshing cool grey inside with highlights in white with a touch of red. They have completely revamped the place and it's clean and stylish with a homey feel, complemented by the folksy furniture, including an incredible table seating 8 handmade locally from a tree from the owners' own woods! A complete meal, including noodles noodles or rice, is only seven quid! That's a bargain for a big plateful of freshly prepared deliciousness.Leave plenty of time, though, especially when it's busy, service can be quite slow.

Excellent food with generous portions and friendly staff. Recommend the special chow mein. Try to avoid cantonese style as this can be spicy and ruin the dish, but otherwise excellent!

Had several meals over a 2 week period. Enjoyed every single time and had different meals each time. Service excellent. Friendly staff.

Just been to the Lantern for my birthday meal..had loads of eating places to choose from in Newtown but settled for this one.. However big mistake..ordering went well and so did the starters however half way through the starters the phone was constantly ringing and the queues for takeaways started building up and we were forgotten...Waiter bought two of our dishes out but nothing else for a while as we waited the two dishes were getting cold then he bought the third dish out but no bowls or plates i had to go up to the bar and ask for them but the waiter was far too busy doing takeaway orders to bring them over to us, the delivery driver bought them over and apologised explaining he was the delivery driver, the third dish came out cold and had to go back to be reheated..Waiter was uninterested and was only concerned about the takeaway side no real apology given ..Understaffed, cold food, bad service unless you order takeaway.. avoid this restaurant or you will be very disappointed... totally ruined my birthday!!

Just had a fantastic meal at this restaurant, which has moved from its former site in Newtown and changed its name since our last visit. Food was absolutely delicious, we had a set meal with wine which cost just £30 for 2 people and there was more than we could eat. It's quite a new restaurant and nicely decorated, simple and quiet ( well it was a weekday). Check out the beautiful stitched wall hanging on the back wall. Staff are great, very friendly, couldn't fault the service or the food. Far superior cooking to the majority of bog standard Chinese restaurants. Recommend a visit.

Had a takeaway from the lantern after being recommended by a friend. The food was ready for pick up exactly on time. Very tasty and good value.

Just enjoyed a very good sweet and sour chicken, whilst my partner had Japanese Udon noodles veggie style. They make their own here, freshly cooked, no packet mixes or frozen fare. Lovely friendly staff and quick service. Well worth a visit.
