The Lansdowne in Cardiff

This was the second time we've had Sunday lunch at the Landsdowne. Unfortunately the food didn't compare favourably to the first time! We waited 45 minutes to be served. The food arrived, we had roast beef. Theyd run out of horseradish sauce and the potatoes had obviously been kept warm for hours so they were dried up and chewy. The cauliflower cheese was overcooked and dried up. The gravy wasn't of the same standard as the first visit, tasted very bland. My guess is success had made them cut corners with the quality so they can churn out more dinners? My sticky toffee pudding wasn't great, quite tasteless actually. Won't be in a rush to go back.

Called in before going to the match. Surprisingly nicely decorated and spacious inside, despite the outside appearance of the building. Friendly bar staff who welcome away fans!

Amazing, welcomes dogs, super friendly staff and clientele, great selection of drinks recommend their burger night.

A long way out of town but fairly close to the Cardiff City stadium. And it was worth it. Lovely friendly pub. Loads of real ales. I found some Bombardier again!! It was empty when I walked in but packed an hour later with not enough staff!! Why on earth don't they pay extra staff, organise themselves and get a bumper Boxing day pay out !! After all January won't be busy. It really isn't rocket science. We gave up queuing in the end and went to the Stadium. They really are missing a trick with 3k away fans....considering it is such a lovely unique place...

This was the most epic Sunday roast I can remember. I normally cook a roast at home and think the average carvery in many places is a bit mediocre, but the Lansdowne was utterly fantastic. Not just the meat, but the towering Yorkshire pudding, the beautiful vegetables, the tasty gravy and the splendid roast potatoes. We all agreed we'd look forward to our next visit. The service was friendly and the range of drinks was great too. I highly recommend a visit...

The Lansdowne is our pub of choice before football at Cardiff City Stadium. A friendly and welcoming atmosphere for home and away fans. Great food and choice of ale. Friendly staff, even when they are under pressure at as the pub fills up.

Amazing staff and great food, big fan of the quiz and the Sunday lunch in second to none. Very impressive selection of beers with 3/4 on at any one time. Top marks!

Great find , quality Sunday lunch . Not a frozen veg in sight and homemade produce . Definitely go back one of the best I have eaten in Cardiff .

Don’t dare complain about your poor standard of meal to the 20-something woman with long, straight black hair and a fringe or you’ll get a mouthful of abuse. Very rude, very unprofessional and smelled of BO. Not great when you work in hospitality. Such a shame as the building itself is very nice. We will never return and we cannot recommend.

Always good. How pubs should be - dog and child friendly and menu choice is simple but everything on it is quality. Small outside area, it's more a smoking area than a beer garden, but doesn't detract from the rest of the place.

Popped in for the quiz with my dog. Good quiz, variety of questions for all ages. Well written. The food was amazing. Had the bacon cheese burger, came with a huge portion of chips. The burger was homemade, best burger in Cardiff and only £12. Dog friendly, good selection of drinks, friendly staff.

Made very welcome by the staff and regulars on my 1st visit to this pub. Excellent choice of real ales and craft beers and a good choice of food on the menu.

Used to live down the road from The Lansdowne Pub. Would frequently go there with friends and family - did so even before living next to it and went there again recently. Always have a good selection of beers which have guest ales etc. Good for watching a game too

Lovely homely place! Was there on a rugby day and it was a really lovely atmosphere. They reserved tables for us in advance and they’re dog friendly! Good prices and lots of ales if you’re into that!

Have tried this pub as its local but the real ale is terrible so bad we only have a half pint so not to be stuck with a terrible pint to drink where is your Abbots Doombar that looks like an ale and not a ale looking like a lager

An excellent local pub, very popular with a wide range of local people and visitors alike. Sells renowned craft beers from popular breweries. I don't like craft beer I like traditional British & European beers but the pub also has decent lagers and usually one or two more traditional ales. Also premium spirits. Very busy with high quality food. The pub is expensive - think gastro pub restaurant prices - but it is a friendly relaxed very good British pub experience.

As a couple we have been to the Lansdowne more than a handful of times now. A change-over in staff has changed the atmosphere a bit - younger bar staff can be quite rude (were quite unpleasant to my wife and never simply accept, apologise and move on if they've made a simple mistake with orders, which we really don't mind we just wanted what we ordered that's all - whisper to each other and glare at the customers in question). The manager can seem a little confrontational at times and I was told she disliked when a friend of ours mentioned to her the bright lighting - shrugged and said they'd ordered the wrong lightbulb, that they could stay or leave. Overall a little unfriendly in the ol' Lansdowne lately, although the male staff are perfectly charming so try to time your trip to the bar when they can serve you. The food is OK - famously chunky chips are great. Non-meat options are quite underwhelming but the wife has enjoyed a Sunday roast there before. Great that they are dog friendly, but should have at least some rules when it comes to kids as it can be chaotic at times. Plenty other pubs nearby to enjoy a more relaxing pint.

Don't know about the food but the pub offers a good range of well-kept beer. It's warm and comfortable. The décor is unpretentious: mostly wooden floors, simple furniture, hops decorating the length of the bar. Nice to sit in pub without TVs everywhere showing programmes no one's watching. Nice atmosphere, nice ales, very friendly bar staff.

Famous Cardiff Pub, in the Canton Markets area, once used by the many rail and postal workers. Sympathetically redeveloped, with apartments. Independant, great staff, cask ales, carbonara style pasta bake was awesome. Friendly locals too, darts and a piano !. Worth a visit , rail and bus easy reach." Current Thing " pub of all ages.Enjoyed my visits.

Would recommend the Sunday roast! Good portions, all very tasty and lovely service. Really nice atmosphere. Only thing we would mention is the gravy was too salty for the nut roast

A great traditional pub, with a modern feel, selling a great range of beers, with a friendly & very helpful barman, who kindly researched the origins of the beer on tap & allowed us to taste beers that were new to us ... each of us had a different beer & they were all in exent condition & went down a treat.

The Lansdowne is 5-star every time! A good range of independent ales- always in great nick, a lovely community atmosphere and a characterful interior. I am always surprised by the high quality of the pub meals. One of the very best pubs about on any level, really! Parking is rubbish though 🙂

Visiting family in Cardiff, walked to the Landsdowne because hubby’s grandmother worked here to the 1930’s, nostalgia trip him, fair enough it was Monday and very quiet, but the barmaid gave us a very chilly welcome, Interrupted her quiet to do nothing day, not interested at all, couldn’t be ruder if she tried,,,had a beer and left, thanks for the nostalgia trip,,Not

Excellent food and good selection of ales but atmosphere always lacking something. Never feel relaxed or comfortable there, like you'd want to spend a few hours or an evening. Very bright, seating not the most comfortable and staff always quite standoffish. Prefer other pubs in the area but worth popping in for the food if you're hungry.

Very hospitable pub with interesting decor, good range of beers and delicious food cooked to order. So dog-friendly they have dog biscuits on the bar, with super-friendly staff. Only problem is not an easy area to park.

Amazing food and a great selection of drinks... the perfect pub. A free house with a strong focus on Welsh breweries. 3 or 4 of these breweries (within a mile of the pub) have a dedicated tap. Well worth a visit.

Absolutely delicious food. Always lovely in the evenings and Sunday lunch is second to none. Our dog enjoys it too. We have been regular visitors for the past year. We were very disappointed to arrive late and find that our table was given away. We should have perhaps phoned to say we were stuck in Christmas traffic but perhaps they could also have checked by phoning to check we were coming before giving our table away. Especially as we book every week and always turn up without exception. The lady seemed to take pleasure in telling us we were too late. Customer service skills sadly not matching the quality of food!

Great pub. Friendly atmosphere with lovely staff. The food is great and reasonably priced for the quality. I love the burgers. I really recommend it. It has a really 'old school' pub vibe with lots of different beer mats decorating the bar. The layout is arranged so there are intimate little corners for a quiet date or large tables in the back room for a large group of friends. Would really recommend.

Stumbled across by chance, when doing a Google Maps browse. Decided to give it a try for food when staying solo for work. 3 beers on cask when I visited. Went for a local pale ale, which was more of an IPA at 5.4%. On form either way. The food menu was extensive. I had the chicken shawarma which was first rate. The lady behind the bar was friendly, and it was good value for money. Sub £20.00 for a pint and a half, and a filling meal (much better than your standard pub grub), well worth a visit.

Typical Cardiff pub outside city centre. Had a family Sunday Lunch and not too impressed though had worse. But at £11.95 ok won't be returning anytime soon

What a great place. Such lovely staff who were accomodating with our last minute Bank Holiday booking, which included bringing our dog. Katsu chicken curry was delicious and kids meals were fab. They loved the pick and mix pudding! Great retro pub, diolch yn fawr.

Update from March 2020: If you like going to a pub with children running around unchecked, and their toys sprawled all over the floor and furniture, you will love this place. It is indeed a lovely pub. However, if you're popping in for a couple of beers on a Sunday, forget it! Every single table was reserved, all were empty. Are you the Lansdowne PUB or restaurant!? Very disappointed. What's happened to first come first served?

Just visited and wanted to say how lovely our meal was and how accomodating the staff who seated us and served our table were. I do however have to say I was pretty disgusted when one of the bar staff came an sat at the table nearest ours, indoors and began vaping. We didn't really appreciate inhaling her second hand sweet tasing vape smoke. Particularly during a pandemic. Other than that, we had a lovely experience. Social distancing measures in place work well and is about the 5th time we've been for food (those were all pre lockdown) and the food is always spot on with a lovely welcoming and relaxed atmosphere! I would have given this a 5 star review if it wasn't for the (technically illegal) indoor vaping.

Fancies some pub lunch and luckily this place came up with good reviews so we gave it a shot. Lovely find! Nice simple lunch menu with quality food and well priced. Definitely will come back!
