The Kitchin in Edinburgh, City of

After many years the revitalised "Rockpool" is again a wonderful starter tasting of a shellfish selection in a pool of shellfish consomme. It is worth a visit for this alone. The Kitchin cooking continues to be the epitome of extracting the optimum taste from many of the less popular ingredients and the current menus have two which we tried. I love the Hogget. I think of it as lamb with attitude. The beauty of lamb with the enhanced flavours of the older animal. My wife ordered the Beef Shin. Often it is viewed as a brilliant flavour but only suitable for Beef consomme. Here all the rich taste of the beef is preserved whilst it is presented with a delicate texture. Both Mains are fine examples of creating fine dining courses from less known ingredients. There are no requirements here for the overwhelming sauces which so often emasculate the principal componet of many dishes elsewhere. All supported by a continuing excellence of service in a friendly, amusing and fun way.

Always visit this restaurant every time we are in Leith and this is the first time I have left a review..What can you say about this fantastic restaurant...From the minute you arrive at this restaurant you are treated like royalty..The food is absolutely amazing and the wine list is extensive and full of amazing wines and Champagne..If you are very lucky the main man Tom Kitchin will be working there and fair play to him he comes out and greets everyone of the diners asking them how they are and how they are enjoying the food and he has no problem having a photo taking with you as well..If you have a special birthday or anniversary or any special event then this is the place for you..Had a fantastic pearl anniversary celebration here and many many thanks to Tom and his fantastic staff making it sooo memorable for the wife and i

Unfortunately do not recommend. The restaurant is very large and appears relatively classy, but the attitude of the staff markedly detracts from this. We went as a young couple. We could afford to pay for it, but had saved up, expecting it to be an incredible experience. It was incredible, but for the wrong reasons. The staff were very cold and seemed quite unwelcoming. We were told our choice of wine wasn't correct for the food. The food itself was pretty terrible. Would not recommend. Try Martin Wishart - that was incredible!

We wanted to love this restaurant, my husband and I visited with a voucher my mum had bought us, as she was a huge Tom Kitchin fan and adored her visit here. Unfortunately, from almost the outset, I felt like I was in the childhood story, "The Emperor's new clothes". Whether it was due to a quiet Tuesday 2pm lunch seating, the fact we are both vegetarian or that our hopes were high although our expectations weren't, the experience was among the poorest of us eating out. We have never eaten in a Michelin starred restaurant and indeed are often disappointed by vegetarian offerings compared to our creations at home that to eat out isn't common for us and perhaps we cannot offer the opinion and insight of others reviews of The Kitchin. But at the least we expect well seasoned, tasty food anywhere and here we were expecting to discover new techniques, innovative flavours and perfect presentation. None of this happened, the menu seemed tired, uninspired and bored, couldn't feel or taste any passion for cooking, even the descriptions given by the waiting staff were delivered as if rehearsed and monotone, perhaps they were embarrassed. The bread made elsewhere was good and the wine enjoyable, although having been lucky enough to stay in Valpolicella area last year, we had tasted and bought very similar quality wine from a winemaker, for around 15 euros so the markup to seventy pounds seemed steep. Even with the staff, we didn't get the buzz that others have experienced and felt that once we failed to deliver on effusive praise they lost interest or again due to the partially filled dining room and the evening service looming they were just ready for a break. When I was unable to eat my main as it was oversalted, they did whisk it away and had it remade, but too soon for me to explain that it was the ricotta filling, not the butter dressing, I felt as if there was a judgement on me rather than an interest in how the dish could be improved. Overall, our experience was flat and increasingly disappointing so that by the end we were quite annoyed and irritated and that was before the £210 bill.

What an amazing restaurant. We have been here several times and it never fails to impress with the quality of the food and the attentiveness of the staff. Even though there was an issue with food coming out late, the staff covered the situation very well. We had a lovely meal from the fixed three course menu. Very highly recommended

We dined here to celebrate my wife's birthday We had been trying for some time to get booked but had been unsuccessful The service seemed to be a bit unorganised with the service waiter hovering around the waiting station on the arrival of other staff to place food down. This happened on almost every course We tried the surprise tasting menu, and it was nice, we felt a couple of the courses were a bit over seasoned, not what was expected The staff were very pleasant and there was lots of staff on duty As you would expect, the restaurant was busy for a Tuesday night After paying the bill and leaving, I found it strange that not one server thanked us as we were leaving the table and we were very generous with our gratuity

I've been wanting to visit here since seeing on "Remarkably places to eat! It was just a wonderful experience. We had the surprise tasting course. It was without doubt some of the most wonderful food we've eaten. Tom coming out from the kitchen to chat to his customers. Was a lovely touch. And actually presenting us with our rock pool course. Explaining it beautifull made our day. The staff are attentive and pleasant. With a shout out to lovely head waiter Franco . All in all , it may be expensive. Its clear the love and time being put in to every course. Treat yourself and visit. Thank you Tom. We will be back. Outstanding x

We went with my parents for an anniversary treat. A very special experience! The food was amazing and wine pairings were fantastic & very well chosen. My personal favourite dish was the scallops cooked inside the shell and sealed with pastry. Delicious! We got the tram from the city centre which took 20 minutes max and a short walk from the tram stop. Really easy to get there. Make sure to include this on your itinerary if you are a foodie exploring Edinburgh!

Located in the Port of Leith, this fine dining restaurant offers the best of Scottish cuisine - a delectable selection of innovative attractively presented dishes. Twelve of us relished the set lunch options, and reasonable priced highly quaffable wines or beers. Service is impeccable.

Both myself and my partner could not fault our experience. The service was excellent, professional, and engaging. The food was outstanding well executed and packed full of interest and flavour a real showcase of great produce. We opted for the exclusive wine pairing to go with the tasting menu and we enjoyed what was served some really lovely pairings. Really enjoyed the experience and will return.

Weve dined here several times over the years and its either excellent or very average and on this occasion it was sadly the latter. The canape was really odd - it was a large ball of what felt like cold mashed potato, the onion and cheese topping didnt really come through - an unpleasant mouthful, also quite big which probably didnt help. The beetroot to follow was okay but just pickled beetroot in beetroot juice, simple but hard to eat. Starters - we had an issue with the scallops being under / raw which to be fair they dealt with quickly and fairly, the sweetbreads and langoustine were very good. Mains of Lamb and venison were tasty but nothing out the ordinary, some parts of the dishes were cold - the venison rump and the aubergine which just showed a lack of attention to detail. The rhubarb pre desert was probably the tastiest dish of the night as the deserts were espresso mouse which sounded great but only had the faintest taste of coffee, the doughnuts were the best thing on that one and the souffle had a scrambled egg consistency and was a disappointment. Hard to really pick out something which was great or memorable, even the Buckthorn cocktail was bland and didnt taste of having any alcohol in it. Lots of staff running around, lots of decanting sauces at the table, carving the lamb at the table for show but it all felt a bit style over substance. Over all a bit of a let down.

Had the set lunch menu: The clam chowder was lovely - rich and creamy; the lamb was very well executed, but not specifically to my palete; and the Apple Crumble Souffle was simply delicious.

It is a fantastic place to eat/dine. The whole team was very welcoming on arrival and very attentive throughout our tasting menu journey. Very impressed that the main man, Tom Kitchin, visited every table checking that everything was OK... We will look forward to our return visit.

Prestige tasting menu with wines. The food was excellent and used ingredients I would not have chosen if using the A la carte menu. It was the whole experience and atmosphere that made our visit all the more memorable. Attention to detail and knowledge of every ingredient and drink was commendable. Tom Kitchen also made time to visit every table and speak with the customers.

Had an incredible experience at The Kitchin! We opted for the set lunch menu which was sensational but I really want to go back and try their other menus because everything was incredible. My favorite part of the restaurant was that everything was from produced in Scotland and they even give you a map to show where they get it all from which was a nice touch. Outside of that fantastic service and great experience.

Dishes are overall not too imaginative, but at The Kitchin you continue to find remarkably consistent solid cooking and top ingredients. Frankly, it's no longer either exciting or good value as it used to be (I started going, as a regular customer, almost 15 years ago), but for visitors to Edinburgh interested in Scottish produce cooked at high level, or for locals who want to splurge out on simply good refined cooking, it certainly remains a very valid, albeit expensive, option.

Every morsel of food was like an explosion of flavours and the wines were paired to perfection! The waiters were so professional and it felt like a truly special experience!

Service top notch. Food expertly done - although dessert didn't quite match the earthiness of the (perfect) main courses. Sommelier paired the courses to perfection, and overall presentation could not be faulted. Will happily book a return visit.

Best scallops and pork cheeks I have ever had. Overall delicious and would definitely recommend. Only one point for improvement: our reservation was at 9pm and towards the last 3 courses of our dinner you could tell that the staff is ready to go home and became less attentive (e.g., we were pouring wine and water on our own). However, i would definitely go again and recommend it to everyone since it’s great experience!

Spectacular! We had an amazing tasting menu and wine pairing experience. The food was exquisite, great service and atmosphere. We even said hello to Tom who was there on the night talking to diners. We recently had the pleasure of dining at The Kitchin in Edinburgh. From the moment we stepped through the doors, we felt ensconced in the atmosphere and genuine hospitality the restaurant provided. It was apparent that great care had been taken to create a place that was pleasing and comfortable as the interior décor was cozy and intimate. The Surprise Tasting Menu was diverse and the dishes were crafted with the utmost skill and creativity. Each of the seven courses that we indulged in was a true masterpiece (including the vegetarian versions) because the favors were exquisite and the presentation of each dish was a work of art. The staff was very knowledgeable in describing each dish and you can taste the thoughtfulness and care in every delicious bite. We were very pleased that we decided to also include the wine pairing because we enjoyed learning about each and they complimented each dishes perfectly. The only glitch was that the optional cheese course took a lot longer to be served than the previous courses and then the rest of the courses took longer than usual, as well as receiving our bill at the end, and the dinner service ended up taking 5 hours. Regardless, we had an exceptional meal that we thoroughly enjoyed and will never forget.

I've wanted to visit this restaurant for quite some time but it is a four hour drive from Leeds. So, when we had the opportunity of a few days in Balmoral with family it presented the ideal opportunity to make this a priority on the way back via Edinburgh. We booked for a Friday lunchtime on the basis that it provided a broad opportunity to order A La Carte, the tasting menu, which we not great fans off generally, or the lunchtime set menu. We opted for the lunchtime menu and wine flight. It turned out to be one of the best dining experiences we've had for a while and we've eaten in other Michelin star restaurants. Loved the ambiance from the moment we walked through the door to the moment we left. It was a delight to meet Tom Kitchen when he greeted all the diners at their table and it was good to see the "name above the door" actually running the pass. The food was exceptional as was the wine pairing, service was impeccable, efficient, friendly and relaxed... loved every mouthful and minute. Well worth the visit and would love to return!

* A note on grades, I rate outwards from three stars. * A culinary highlight of our trip to Edinburgh and London in May of '23. We arranged for a late lunch on a gloomy Friday and were immediately charmed by the attentive (though not intrusive) service. The drinks and locally sourced food were top-flight. What an amazing meal and experience! Every aspect was finely tuned and it is clear how much passion the chef and his team have for preparing great food and caring for their guests. I cannot wait to be back in the future!

Amazing experience. We booked a late lunch here to celebrate a special occasion and we loved every minute of our experience. It’s been on my list for years and it did not disappoint. All of the food was 10/10, we upgraded to include the cheese and this was such a special touch getting to pick what cheese we wanted. All of the staff were really attentive and made us feel so comfortable. Only downside was we booked the last table for the lunch service, when we arrived the restaurant and kitchen had such a buzz but by the time we finished our mains the restaurant emptied and all the chefs left the kitchen. We then had to flag down waiting staff for some cocktails after our cheese as no one was really present in the restaurant - in future i would not book this time slot due to this. Overall had a wonderful experience and Tom even came out the kitchen to say hello to us when we arrived!! Thanks to all.

Truly fabulous experience from the food to the theatre of it all and especially the staff who treated us like actual queens for the whole evening. Additionally, the wine pairings were spot on, the cocktails were original and delicious. Each course of the tasting menu blew my wee brain, and the cheeseboard was a sensation. We enjoyed: Squid & Cep Roast Perthshire ceps, day boat Pittenweem squid, baby leek, parsley, garlic Scallop Hand-dived Orkney scallops baked in the shell, seasonal vegetables, white wine, Vermouth and herb sauce Cod Roasted Scrabster cod, braised baby artichoke, Newhaven fish soup, sea herbs Cheese A choice of cheese from the British Isles served with homemade bread Beautifull amuses – great team – top location. We went to The Kitchin with a group of 13 and had an incredible experience - we loved every single course and Joel served us incredible wines. Also noteworthy was the service led by Diego which can just be described as perfect. No question our next visit to Edinburgh will include a visit to The Kitchin again!

We had an absolutely wonderful evening! The food was spectacular - fresh & creative. We opted for the Prestige Surprise Tasting menu with wine pairings. The meal did not disappoint, and the wine selections were an "epiphany " match to our meal. Great detail provided in describing our meal and our wines. Chef Kitchin has an amazingly talented team, and he also came out to greet us during dinner.

Amazing Experience! Been wanting to get up to Edinburgh and go here for years. The food and drink is exquisite as you'd expect, and the staff are incredibly friendly and attentive. Watching Tom and his Team put together the food is great, and meeting the man himself was fantastic, a true Gent. This a real must for any foody!

We had the Chef’s Surprise Tasting Menu, and I couldn’t recommend it more. We came because of the Men in Kilts show with Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish, and we could not have been more pleased when the appetizer was the incredible scallops cooked in the shell. Superb flavor, and we found ourselves eating the sauce and puff pastry with a spoon. The venison, halibut, gazpacho, and dessert were also incredible. The whisky sommelier helped me choose a wonderful whisky. All of our cocktails were incredible as well. We will be back!

We travel all over and this was one of the best meals we've EVER had!

Really fine food, excellent service

As a French, I really expected more for a michelin star restaurant... I ate lunch there. Food was good, but nothing exceptionnel. The Wagyu tartare was well made and well balanced. But the lamb was not as balanced and refined as I was expecting, assaisonnement errors. The lamb was not perfectly cooked as it should have (too far off) and too salty, even with a little of everything. The bramble was good, but the honeycomb was off. As for my friend (also French) that accompanied me, he didn't really thought much of the food. He took the lunch set menu, the beef tartare was unbalanced, too fatty. He didn't really enjoyed the cod, which had at least 4 fish bones in it... also because the leek was impossible to really cut with his knife. Was not a smooth experience. I can't fathom how you can be a michelin star and let 4 big fish bones in your fish... One, ok it can happen, but 4 big ones... He also didn't really enjoyed the lemon soufflé, not the best he has tasted. We only really enjoyed the amuse bouche (before lunch and between main and dessert). The morrow, we had lunch in a good restaurant in the center of Edinbourgh, without any star, with a better ambiance and better balanced courses. I give it to the Kitchin, they are not very pricy for a michelin star. But is it worth it for the star ? No.

Dining in style.. Great welcome.. Shown to the bar to relax before dining. Lovely internal decoration with a moody (good) theme within the dining area. We wished to have a taster menu and we explained to the Maitre D that we where pescatarian. Instantly greeted by a response of not a problem we can provide a tasting menu to suit.. Sorry I didn't take any pictures I was too busy enjoying the food. All delicious all served well with a lovely staff rapport.. It was great to have different servers to break up the 4 hours we where there.. Thanks Team Kitchin an unforgettable Edinburgh experience.

I have wanted to go here for a while and finally got my chance. However, I wouldn't be arrogant and try to review the food because better reviewers than me have already given that the thumbs up. This is about my experience of the The Kitchin in Leith. Going to The Kitchin is a bit like a theatre experience; the special atmosphere on arrival, the excitement of being greeted and seated and the little map given to show where all the produce comes from. So far so good. There is an elongated window into the kitchen showing all the brigade hard at work and Tom Kitchin himself on the pass. We had opted for the surprise tasting menu and after a few courses we were very happy with our choice. Later in the evening, Tom Kitchen walked round the restaurant greeting and talking to each table - a nice touch. Once he had completed his tour of his restaurant, things started to go awry with the service. We had completed our halibut course and were patiently waiting for the next one. Eventually a waiter laid new cutlery and another one brought a couple of plates, tutted and left with the plates. The head waiter then came up and asked had we had the halibut course to which we answered yes. Turns out they had tried to serve us the halibut twice. Eventually the venison course turned up which sadly, albeit delicious, was cold. Our plates and cutlery were cleared once more and we then had a wait of over thirty minutes for the next course. The rest of the evening went without a problem and regardless of the issues with service, we thoroughly enjoyed the food. Would I go again? Probably not - is is quite an expensive night out and probably a bit like going to the same production of a play again but a nice thing to do once.

Service was good. However, none of the dishes are good. I had 3 courses for lunch. Both lobster and langoustine were too salty, while the dessert was too sweet.

An absolutely superb experience dining at this lovely restaurant. From the minute we entered we found the staff to be extremely friendly, professional and very attentive. The dinner a la carte menu was excellent and it was so good to see the emphasis on locally sourced produce. The restaurant presents a lovely relaxing atmosphere. The food itself was fabulous and the advice on wines was really helpful from the sommelier team. We had high expectations for this visit but it surpassed them by a mile and to round off a truly memorable evening Tom K came out of the kitchen to chat to each table. A great man, with a great staff running a truly great restaurant. Thank you.

Tried their lunch set today. The dish is well crafted. Taste good. The missing stars is for the 1)dessert part and 2) beef tartare 3) the leek in salmon dish The soufle is quite disappointed because i tried better one in malaysia, in a souffle specialty cafe. And the cheese set, you dont need it because the 3 course is quite full. I ordered Without wine pairing. 2pax with 1pound voluntary donation, the bill is 127pound for 2 (1 3 course and 1 3course lunch with cheese) Beef tartare, i tried better one in gordon ramsays restaurant. The butter doesnt match well to the vege sandwich and it feels abit oily The leek is ordinary, no wow factor

Visited for my 60th birthday with my friend. Experience more than lived up to my expectations. Food and service was amazing

Wonderful dining experience staff very attentive and extremely knowledgeable. The food presentation was only surpassed by the various flavours and taste of the dishes presented. Despite a full Restaurant Tom the owner took the time to speak to his diners. To cap it all a visit to the kitchen to observe the goings-on that produces the fine dining experience. Also a mention for Chris who made this possible

The experience didn’t pair with the price that was paid. I can’t say there was much drastically wrong, but I wasn’t blown away by any means; I left wanting more than I received. We were served by multiple attendants and the service felt inconsistent. Our sommelier and waiter were lovely however the bartender lacked poise - said he would come back to explain the champagne and never did, and then interrupted the lady replacing our cutlery instead of waiting a couple of seconds for her to finish. I love it when waiters will refold your napkin when you go to the bathroom, however it feels sloppy when it’s not consistent, I would rather it not be offered if it will only be offered sporadically. There is not much bad to say about the food however I feel it peaked too early; the spoot starter was the best dish by far. It could be that the rest of the meals just had flavour combinations that were not quite to my taste but I didn’t bite into any of it and think “wow this is amazing”, which was disappointing. The food was adequate enough that had the service been top notch this rating would be higher. Unfortunately, I was left feeling that the only way this could be 5/5 would be if the price was half what we paid.

If only there were more stars, amazing experience, sublime food, faultless service, flavours that will have us missing Scotland and it’s unique produce, showcased so beautifully, can’t wait to return for a tasting menu and thankyou to chef and team for looking after us so well
