The Kitchen Garden in South Kesteven

Albiet the garden centre is trying to provide so many things to so many people it's a mess - there is no plan no structure no identity it's trying too hard to keep up with the bigger garden centres and failing. It needs scrapping and starting again. Suggest you go to a bigger successful one and decide what you want to offer. It's confusing a shack here and walkthrough here and walkthrough the middle of a butchers to cafe - it's hiddly piddly - got great potential if the right people had a vision 🤯

We visit a few times a year - and usually great - but our recent visit was let down by average food and more so by the dire service from the middle aged woman who seems to be in charge. We were made to feel like an inconvenience just be being there - no manners / no smile / no apology when your table hasn’t been cleared for 30 minutes / no other staff can take an order - her presence and attitude created an uneasy atmosphere that spoilt our meal. Based on this - we would not rush back

Food was good but had a long wait and the service was very aggressive from a middle aged women. She didn’t make us feel welcomed , more like we needed to pay and leave

Efficient and friendly service in the bistro cafe. Lovely food and great value for money. Would highly reccomend for lunch, or just cake and drinks!

Lovely Saturday lunch. Didn’t pre-book which i guess would be an advantage, however they managed to accommodate a group of four. At this point it usually goes South, but it didn’t and we received great service from all the team. The food was lovely and we all enjoyed our meals.Well worth a visit.

First visit here despite staying near Stamford many times. Very popular restaurant and our visit did not mirror some of the negative ones posted here. Why would one person comment about the car wash when we are reviewing the restaurant, is beyond me. I also discount reviews from people who make negative reviews on their first and only contribution. Breakfast here is first class. Perfectly cooked with local ingredients accompanied by great coffee. Service from Tilly and Jake was perfect also. My wife had the smashed avocado on sourdough with salmon, I had the large breakfast. I only wished I lived closer but my waistline would suffer!!! Will try lunch offerings when next this way. As for the Garden centre how it is said to mediocre by one reviewer is beyond me. 😩

So they like to poison customers in this place allergens are not declared on the menu. When you order egg mayo and cress and get egg mayo mustard and cress. Nice going when will you get it right when you kill someone. Seriously poor kitchen will never be back and really don't recommend it

Garden centre itself is quite nice. However, DO NOT USE THE CAR WASH. They stole my AirPods from my car. I spoke to a member of staff in the garden centre who reports this to be a frequent issue. Don’t understand why they would continue to rent the space to a ‘company’ who they know are stealing people’s property? Also - they couldn’t give me any details about the staff working the car wash, apparently they didn’t have any information on them (which I wanted to use for a police report). Am now out of pocket £20 for a substandard car wash & £200 to replace my AirPods.

New place to us - Friday lunch time, in the hope of eating in the Stamford Garden Centre Bistro on spec, after a hospital visit. As we were in 2 cars & needed easy of parking with heavily pregnant lady, disabled lady & small child. My husband & I together with with daughter, son-in-law & 2 yr old grandson headed for the Bistro area, through the amazingly mouthwatering Simpson butchers area to find the Bistro incredibly busy. But after juggling their bookings, the helpful, friendly staff couldn’t have been more helpful in accommodating us. The buzz in the place was great, tables well spaced with really lovely decor on the walls, plenty to talk about with our grandson, who was quickly supplied with a good wooden highchair. We were instantly supplied with menus, (just wish there hadn’t been so many sheets of paper) & also noted a specials board on the wall. The choice with tempting, items not usual Garden centre Fayre, with all meats advised as being supplied by the in-house butchers we had walked through. Drinks order swiftly taken, then delivered, then we had a little wait before the food, order was taken but in that time noted many tempting looking plates being delivered to other diners. Four Lamb Koftas with pitta, salad etc (jacket, beans & cheese for the little on) order taken, then the food was swiftly delivered. It was absolutely delicious. We then ordered cake from the cake selection menu (so no getting up to choose from a glass case) & it together with individual pots of tea with cups & saucers arrived promptly. We had a lovely wander around the Bijou but well stocked garden centre afterwards. Buying a couple of items from the butchers for tea. We will return when we need things for the garden & to buy from the butchers & to eat again at the Bistro. Thank you Stamford Garden Centre, you made my Birthday.

My first visit to this eatery was today with my Wife around lunchtime. We were shown to a table and sat down in an unoccupied area, save for one other eating a meal. The menu had already been passed to us by a very plesent and helpful young man. Strangely he returned about 5 to 8 mins later, we thought to take the order, but he apparently wrote down a couple of table numbers and left. By this time the area was filling up with customers. Behind use two young women appeared and were taking orders, then left again, although we had been seated way before the other customers. After a wait staff appeared again serving drinks. At this point we asked the waitress why we hadn't had an order taken let alone served because we had waited a very long time. The reply was, "I'll have to check the list". At which point she left and after another 5 mins of waiting we left after a total of over 20 mins of being seated and not even an order for drinks being taken. Our opinion is that staff need training in front of house and waiting. If someone is seated with a menu the drinks order needs taking immediately and then the order for food taken on delivery of drinks. We left not only the restaurant, but the garden centre too, without planned garden purchases, such was the degree of disappointment with this visit.

Garden centre itself was okay though quite confusing layout. Just seemed to have to wander no directions on where to find specific plants or other garden accessories. Overall very expensive. As for the restaurant/bistro extremely poor customer service. It was busy and the food did look good but they just couldn’t cope with the number of customers. Got a seat quickly but no menu. Asked for menu and told would bring one. After 5 minute wait was then questioned about who had sat us at the table. Then returned and asked which menu we would like. Then returned and told breakfast was over but could have lunch menu but couldn’t take out order for 15 minutes. Not even an offer of taking our drinks order. Glanced at the menu and decided it was well expensive for what they were offering so left.

I have been a regular visitor for years and live locally. The restaurant has always been excellent band supported the mediocre garden centre. Now the restaurant is terrible. Food dull, portions reduced in size, especially the cakes. Staff constantly changing and uninterested. Apart from one excellent girl

Visited on a Monday afternoon for a quick coffee. There is absolutely nothing worth visiting here for as the service is absolutely rock bottom awful. The staff all stand around chatting and completely ignore the customers. We were ignored and even when we waited at the counter to pay 4 different staff completely ignored us so we gave up in the end and left the money on the table. I was disappointed I didn’t have the exact money as it meant I had to leave a tip which was certainly not justified. There was another member of staff eating behind the counter during our visit, again very unprofessional. There are cupboard doors falling off. This place needs a manager… or a new one. Really don’t bother and go elsewhere unless you like being made to feel like an inconvenience.

I just wish I lived nearer, so I could go more often. Everyone is so nice, the coffee and cakes are super and the environment very cosy and comfortable, makes it sound small but it isn’t!

We found this garden centre by chance and we were surprised to find that Sunday Lunch was still available - so many places have finished by 2pm. Very well cooked lunch - the veggie option was particularly tasty, the beef tender, skyscraper yorkshires and vegetables were perfectly cooked. Speedy service, very obliging staff. Very enjoyable. Still a couple of fruit flies buzzing around but they didn’t spoil the occasion.

The wife and I decided we wanted Sunday out again, so we had to return to Stamford Garden Centre at Casterton. Nice big portions of good wholesome, tasty food, served in a lovely environment, with great service from Sue again, and to finish it off nicely a chocolate brownie each. Really nice friendly service, always busy, as you would expect from a popular place.

Had a two course meal from the a la carte menu. Four good choices available for each course that will satisfy the majority of diners, if not 5 -6 additional choices on the ordinary menu. Pleasant surroundings in the conservatory with attentive staff. The only negative making this review 4 star was the annoying presence of a number of fruit flies.

I have been dining at the restaurant for a number of years and always found it satisfactory in every department. Over the last couple of weeks though , they have been invaded by swarms of fruit like flies . I was having lunch with friends a couple of weeks ago and it became a distraction trying to swat of shoo away these creatures. When I bought it to the attention of staff they said they were aware of the problem and a solution was at hand. Well two weeks on and it's worse. breakfast this morning was ludicrous, culminating in a fly landing on and getting stuck on the food... end of that meal.Once again it was brought to the attention of staff who said there had been countless complaints and the owners were aware. Well. the owners seem to need to be a bit more pro active and responsive to customer comments. They generally have a pretty successful place with good food but nothing gives a bad taste in someones mouth quite like the indifference of an owner sitting on their laurels, let alone sharing ones food with uninvited critters.I'll give it a miss for a week or two and see if anything is done, whether by an exterminator of by Environmental health... happy dining

Three of us lunched here on Sunday last. We all enjoyed our meals and felt very comfotable. The lady who served us was really good and understood my need for a small meal. We will eat here again.

Booked a table but didn’t stay to eat as our table was dirty as was the windowsill beside it- covered in bits of food from who knows when. There were flies literally everywhere and we were batting them away. Got up to leave and noticed how dirty the floors are. It’s a shame as the decor is nice and we’d heard good things but it looks like it’s being neglected.

When you first come in, the decor really hits you. It looks like a high quality restaurant, and I like the way you can buy the furniture and the art on the walls, a clever touch.

Visited at lunch time. It was fairly busy outside but easily got a table for our party (5 adults, 1 child and 2 high chairs) inside in the first ‘bit’ before going into main restaurant.

We were looking for somewhere off the A1 to meet family travelling from the North. What a delightful place. A pretty garden centre with lovely staff. The cafe has inside and outside tables with dog friendly tables available. I had read a previous review about the food not being anything special. We were surprised by the interesting menu and how well presented the food was. The cafe uses Hambleton bread, baked by an Artisan bakery which we used when we lived in Rutland. There is plenty of choice and, despite being busy, the staff were attentive and the service was good. The garden centre itself is imaginative, well laid out, quirky and certainly worth another visit!

We have eaten at the garden centre many times and feel it has always been a lovely reliable place to take elderly parents. Today was very disappointing- over cooked fish and chips, Caesar salad was really terrible, huge slabs of over cooked chicken and chunks of bacon, not at all the delicate light lunch dish. The service was fine but we were really not happy with the quality of food - such a shame as I think this will deter us from eating there again.

Food was adequate, although fairly uninspiring. Major downside was the very poor service. Smiles and general chat were definitely not on the menu today.

We visited as recommended by a local whilst on holiday today. The restaurant was very busy, but we managed to get a dog friendly table without booking. There are two tables reserved for dogs and their owners. We both had lunch specials which were well cooked and delicious. The risotto was excellent and both meals were good value. Staff were friendly and helpful despite being very busy. Food arrived quite quickly and was nice and hot. Only comment, perhaps more tables could be available for dogs and owners especially when the weather is awful and eating outside is not possible?

Popped in at the end of our day after visiting Stamford and then Rutland Water. Had a look round the garden centre and found the wonderful oasis of the kitchen cafe. Lovely tea and wonderful cake which rounded off the trip beautifully. Really enjoyed it and so glad we came in.

Service was a bit slow considering how many staff are walking around. we had omelette and chips, cottage pie and a soup and a sandwich. When food arrived the portion sizes were more than adequate and delicious. plenty of meat in pie and ham in omelette. You could tell all the food was cooked fresh and the proper home made chips were a highlight. there is a wait of up to 30mins for food but this is because it is all cooked fresh. definitely worth a visit.

As a local, we have sampled every English Breakfast on offer in Stamford. Hands down this is the winner. Very generous portions, great quality ingredients and fantastic staff.

OMG what a fantastic place, we called on Valentines Day on the way into Stamford, what a fantastic oasis we found, one of the finest garden centres we have seen, the furniture, gifts and clothing are amazing, we could have moved into this place, the wood burning stoves burning wood and all the furniture is out of this world.

I regularly meet a friend in Stamford, when she is en route from London to Yorkshire. If it’s Friday which is market day in Stamford, and consequently extremely busy, we make The Garden Kitchen our rendezvous for lunch. Minutes off the A1, easy to park, and the food has always been excellent.

Visited yesterday, this being our second visit this year, excellent selection of food, well presented, good portions and reasonably priced

I visit here regularly as I know I can get a lovely lunch without being let down. There are a range of options and prices and they use really good ingredients, such as Hambleton bread, so even a sandwich is a good one. Some places get the basics wrong, not here. There are a range of seating options - cosy, in a bright room or outside. The staff are always friendly and efficient. We often drive out of town to here as we know we will have a good lunch then.

I haven't visited this establishment for sometime so dropped in for coffee with cream and coffee cake. Coffee still up to usual high standard and cake was fresh and moist. Judging by how full the place was standards overall must be very high.

Called in without a booking for Sunday Lunch yesterday and although real busy, they quickly found us space.

We had lunch at The Garden Kitchen on a Friday, arriving at 12.30.

My business partner and I are regular visitors here, the food is lovely and of the highest quality, but most of all we always receive the best service. Today we were helped by the lovely Sue, but I have to say all of the staff are brilliant and make us feel like we are in a high end restaurant and simply cannot do enough for you. I have seen some of the reviews and yes, it is busy and as they cook all food freshly it does not come in ‘take out’ time, but absolutely worth the wait and quite rightly busy. Who wouldn’t want to go there? Thank you for a wonderful experience as always to the whole team.

Arrived about 11.15AM and wanted to order lunch but was told we couldn't until 11.45AM. Surely they could take advance orders? Partner had pork belly but when asked if there was any apple sauce to go with it, they said no! Strange, because the butchers next door sells it! Partners pork belly looked a small portion compared to what they served the table behind. Probably that was the last lot?

Came here for lunch with my parents. The conservatory is light and airy but the rest of the eating area is a bit dark.

Been here several times and never been disappointed. Good portion sizes and nice staff. Only criticism is not much vegetarian options.

Called in on a busy Sunday mid morning for coffee and cake. We were a party of three and were met with a smile from a member of staff and were invited to choose one of the vacant tables. We ordered coffee and a cake, there was plenty of choice of inviting treats. The venue was busy with lots of people having wonderful breakfasts, clearly a popular choice. We loved our visit, thank you.

Visit for family Sunday lunch including 2.5 year old grandson. The cafe is excellently laid out and decorated. It was totally full, booking for Sunday lunch definitely advised. Between us we had 2 Roast Beef dinners, Cod Loin and home-made fish fingers from the children's menu. Quality of the food was very good and 4 clean plates resulted. Time for desserts. The choice was limited with only 1 hot dessert. As this was pineapple upside down cake, which none of us like we settled on sticky toffee ice-cream sundae, which were large and tasty. Overall a very enjoyable lunch which could be improved by widening the hot dessert choice in winter

Stopped off the motorway for a short break. Helpful staff, great stock in the shop and absolutely lovely food. If I lived closer, I'd come here all the time. Highly recommended.

We live locally and ofter frequent at the Garden Kitchen for either Coffee & Cake, Breakfast or Lunch and always enjoyed the food and atmosphere. We decided to book and attend the Dining nights that they have the first friday of every month. We took some friends to join us. We couldn't fault atmosphere and the staff but we were disappointed with the starters and mains. We thought the tapas as the starter should of come out with some bread, the Squid was another starter and it just lacked presentation and not really much off it. The other starters were fine. Then when we got the mains, we again were disappointed with the presentation as felt it has just been slopped on the plate. We couldn't fault the meat it was lovely and tender and decent portion of meat, you could of done with somemore vegetables on the plate colourful veg like carrots,cauliflower or bring out and additonal small bowl of mixed veg. The desserts were lovely and presentation good. Very good wine list and couldn't fault the wine we had.

Mid week lunch was excellent on all counts - a 'special' steak and a vegetable curry, were well cooked and flavoursome, pleasant staff and timely service. Decided to visit again for Sunday lunch and wish we hadn't. The conservatory area and outside seating were nearly full, the tables inside all had reserved notices on them. We asked if there was a table for two and were shown to a 'reserved' table. (The other reserved tables were still unoccupied when we left the restaurant at 2 o'clock ?).Sweetcorn fritters were lovely, hot and with a hint of chilli. Unfortunately, the roast beef plate was absolutely tasteless. The beef was tender and looked well cooked, the vegetables still had a slight crunch, so what do they do to make everything totally lacking in flavour? Such a a shame, we had high hopes.

Have visited several times and the food is always very good. Plenty of choice and several daily specials. Staff are very pleasant and helpful, also very accommodating to wheelchair users. Best to reserve a table as it gets very busy, especially at lunchtime.
