A splendid meal in a very nice pub/restaurant. The place has a nice warm feeling and the welcome from the staff was great. We had starters and mains - I must commend the ribs from the specials board - so tender and beautifully cooked and presented. Thanks for great service and a very pleasant evening.

This was the 1st time visit to the restaurant with my family, the atmosphere and surroundings are lovely and the service friendly and welcoming, we started with a prawn cocktail which was nice but at nearly £10 it was quite expensive for what it was, then we were served our curry! Well, what can I say...the small curry came up and it tasted like a micro meal from a supermarket and was the same size, it wasn't very nice, tough chicken too, was so disappointed and at £15 quid it was way overpriced for what it was, very disappointing so didn't even bother with desserts and got the bill so could leave, £77 later for 3 starters and 3 very inadequate weatherspoons type mains, absolutely way over priced , will never eat there again ....

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We were staying with some friends in Rye and wanted to take them out to Sunday lunch. The King’s Head was highly recommended on Trip Advisor, so we booked a table for four for 1.00pm. I realise now that I should have looked further back in the reviews, as in amongst all the glowing reviews were some terrible ones. This seems to be a pub that is either very good or very bad, and unfortunately our experience was the latter. Despite arriving a few minutes before 1pm our meal was not served until nearly 2.00pm, and that was only after we had chased it. About 40 mins after we had ordered we asked if our food would be much longer, and after going away to check the server came back and told us that it was “being done now”. The quality of the food was mixed, to say the least. The steak and ale pie was very good, and came with a good mash. The burger was passable, although the bun was very dry, there was very little relish/sauce and some salad in or with the burger would have been nice. It came with hot, well cooked chips. The only things that were good about the roast dinners, however, were the roast potatoes and the Yorkshire puddings. The other vegetables were overcooked and tasteless, and the beef and the nut roast were both almost inedible. The beef was like shoe leather - dry and tough, in a strange tasting gravy (a bit like school dinners of the past). The nut roast looked and tasted more like a slice of stuffing - it was glutinous and bland, and clearly not (I hope) homemade. Both meals looked as though they had been waiting around being kept warm or had been re-heated. No one came to ask how our food was, or even came near the table while we were eating. As we had waited so long and were all very hungry we decided to eat what we could rather than go looking for someone. The young servers were very pleasant, but didn’t know how to answer any questions, or how to respond to problems (eg. the beer we ordered was off, and needed replacing - just the end of the barrel, I expect, and we were given an alternative without question, once the issue had been passed up the chain). When they came to collect our plates they asked if everything had been ok (they could see how much food had been left) and we told them about the roasts. They said they would tell the chef. When we went to pay the (duty?) manager asked if everything had been ok, and I told her about the roasts. She said that we should have said something at the time, but I said that having had to wait so long for our food we just wanted to eat what we could. Instead of simply apologising she told me that the problem was that lots of people had arrived at the wrong time (i.e. not the time they had booked) meaning that the kitchen struggled to cope. However, we saw people on all the tables around us get served before us even though they had arrived after us, and so our suspicion was that our order somehow got forgotten. Mistakes happen, but when they do the best thing is to apologise, rather than try to justify them. Judging by all the positive reviews, the pub seems to be capable of producing great food, and anywhere can have an off-day. However, there seem to be more such occasions than there should be here, and more importantly the staff don’t know how to deal with them when they happen. We don’t blame the young servers in the slightest for how things were, but the management need to invest more time and effort in training their staff in customer service, and also in ensuring that the quality of the food produced by the kitchen is less uneven.

We have just spent a weekend away in Camber and based on favorable reviews decided to book a table for Sunday lunch at the Kings Head. On arrival we received a warm welcome, Covid regulations were in place and we were shown to a nice table. There was a real fire blazing away and the bar/restaurant area had a great feeling. The majority of our group decided to opt for the double roast (chicken & beef) with all the trimmings which turned out to be one of the best Sunday roasts we have had for a very long time. The amount of meat served was outstanding and was accompanied with plenty of well cooked vegetables and plenty of extra gravy if requested. Despite the size of the roast we still all decided to opt for a dessert. There was a great choice and when arrived they were all very well presented and tasted amazing. Overall our lunch experience was extremely good and would certainly be happy to return if we were in the area. Highly recommended.

Eat here last week and only just got around writing a review. Felt I need to as the food was outstanding: quite the best belly pork I have ever eaten - crackilng crisp and meat melting, 'er indoors had a stilton and steak pie that was also quite brilliant. Both served with great mash and gravy and a separate bowl of veg. Drank some white wine to start and a lovely Pinot Noir with the mains - both very good value and excellent.Pub feels very safe - all staff in masks, table service and tables well spaced: give it a try in these difficult times.

My wife and I stayed at the Kings Head for three nights in the White Room, one of the small number of rooms in the main building. There are also a number of ‘cottage’ rooms in an annexe across the car park. The Kings Head is a lovely hotel, with amazing staff. It’s located about 10 minutes’ walk from the edge of Rye, and, while not in the centre, it doesn’t suffer some of the parking and traffic issues that the hotels in the centre probably have. The walk downhill into town isn’t great, as it’s along a busy road, but there’s a pavement and it’s useful exercise after over-indulging in the delicious food in the hotel. The hotel advertises itself as dog-friendly, but there was no problem getting a dog-free room if, like us, you’re not dog lovers. In fact, we didn’t see a dog in the hotel the whole time we were there. Like the rest of the hotel, our room seemed to be freshly redecorated. The bed seemed to be larger than standard, and was a little soft, but there was plenty of space, for us and for our clothes, and the spacious shower in the bathroom was very nice. Iron, ironing board, hair dryer and toiletries were all provided, but not tissues. Wi-fi, which worked perfectly throughout our stay, is available in the rooms, as are tea & coffee-making facilities. We ate in the hotel restaurant twice during our stay, and the food was superb both times – our compliments to the chef. There seemed to be reasonable social distancing in the spacing of the tables, but unlike in other restaurants just recently, here they have managed to retain the busy atmosphere, which many places seem to have have lost. Drinkswise, with Peroni on draught I was happy. Foodwise, particularly recommended are the Hot Rock Steaks, a little pricey but an unusual experience. The fish and chips were great, but then so was probably every other meal on the menu. Breakfasts were superb, with flexible choice (and large portions of smoked salmon), the only missing item for me being some fruit salad. We appreciated the flexible breakfast window – 8-10am - and the reserved table for each room. Eating out on our third evening, we had an Indian meal at the Mahdi Lounge in town, an extremely good choice. What really made our stay here special were the staff, a group of girls (sorry, no guys) with a real ‘can do’ attitude towards guests. Although the restaurant was fully booked for both of our first two evenings, we were found a table both evenings because, as we were told, ‘we like to look after our residents’. Exactly the right thing to say! I can mention two of the staff – Holly and Amy – who impressed us most, but they were all really customer-friendly, not always found in UK hotels. If you’re planning to stay around Rye, put the King’s Head on your list, and we’re sure you won’t be disappointed.

Having stayed here and eaten here in the past we were looking forward to our dinner. My wife’s chicken curry was over-cooked and the sauce was thin and tasteless. The waitress asked if everything was alright, and we told her it was not. She said sorry but did not do anything about it. As far as we know, she did not tell the cook. A better reaction and some response would have been appreciated. Our evening was spoilt further by a very loud-mouthed man at a nearby table using foul language who was not asked to moderate his language. We left and went to another establishment to finish our evening.

We were staying at another hotel nearby, but wanted to eat elsewhere. As we passed the hotel looked inviting. We phoned and booked for that evening and the meal was simply stunning. Service was brilliant, my main was one of the best dishes I have ever had at a restaurant... scampi, salmon and prawns, with a sauce, salad leaves and skippy chips. My husband had the curry which he also enjoyed. The whole meal was so good we returned the next evening. What impressed us greatly was the cleanliness of the restaurant and the complete attention to the rules on masks, etc. One simply felt very safe.Well done.

Ordered one camembert and one olives with breadsticks to start. Camembert was lovely. Olives not so great and came with a huge pile of plain breadsticks. Found out when we got the bill that they had automatically doubled both portions without asking, so the Camembert was over £12 and olives over £5.Ordered falafel burger and veggie flatbread for mains. Veggie burger was small and very dry, probably the worst veggie burger we've ever had. Flatbread was nice, but just a pitta bread with onions, peppers, tomatoes and hummus on top. Side salad was nice and fresh, but no dressing at all on it.The staff were polite, but not very attentive and we had to try and catch their eye when we wanted something, rather than be asked.Maybe just a bad day as other reviews are good, or maybe just not great for vegetarians.
