Visited in early September 2020 and stayed for 2 nights. During Covid. I am a wee bit apprehensive holidaying at this time but have to say ALL my worries were unnecessary at Kilberry Inn.Everything was just perfect. The rooms are particularly comfy, with a high quality of bedding and towels. This is such a cosy and warm place. I was amazed at the number of regulars who just keep coming back but can truly understand their reason. David and his wife have hospitality down to a fine art. The food was wonderful, particularly good if you love fish. (The crab cakes for starter were to die for).David was very helpful with local history and information as to where best places to visit. He told us where we could see sea eagles and lo and behold - we did!The drive in is single tracked and Kilberry Inn is in the middle. This is a beautiful road. The sights a wonderful advertisement for Scotland. The ambience in the restaurant is very friendly and welcoming. Small numbers make for great conversation and we met such lovely, entertaining people. Will we be back? Oh Yes. Thanks for such a great experience.

We stayed with dear friends who were celebrating their anniversary once again at Kilberry. The description, a restaurant with rooms is apt. Clean, fresh, well appointed rooms are the basis from which one enjoyed to the max the food and drink. Once you step in off the road you are at the bar, met by David with a firm handshake, and you are immediately at ease. Log fires and wood burning stoves add to the demeanour. The relaxed ambience, with a carefully curated selection of lovely wines and spirits adds to the enjoyment. The food, well, no wonder Clare has a bib gourmand from Michelin. It is terrific, the monk fish stew and halibut, as all the dishes, are fresh as a daisy, locally sourced and beautifully seasoned. Writing this makes me want to return again, now.

We went to the Kilberry Inn in August 2019 in order to celebrate a special birthday. The drive to it from Ormsary along the coast is breathtaking and one of Argyll's best kept secrets. The restaurant was cosy and welcoming. The staff warm and friendly and the food excellent. This is a blend of Scots, French and modern cooking. It's unpretentious (a thoroughly good thing in my opinion) and quite delicious. The restaurant itself is again an unpretentious but nicely refurbished croft-type building and you feel you're in good hands as soon as you walk in.My only criticism, and it's a minor one, is that large rectangular tables are less convivial than round ones and the evening inevitably resulted in each end of the table talking together rather than all together, simply out of practicality rather than design. That said, when I'm back in Argyll this will be a definite stopping off point!

Fantastic service and food, one of our best ever eating experiences. Superb soda bread and foccaccia followed by some fresh oysters to get the taste buds going, through delightfully and tastily garnished smoked salmon, devilled crab with a fresh and crispy breadcrumb topping, and mains of Pork Belly and Rib eye, cooked to perfection, topped off with a beautifully balanced panacotta with rose water, and the tastiest, smoothest, coffee ice cream ever. Wine list has some real gems, also bottled craft beers, gins, drams, and sherries to suit most tastes. Was happy to let David choose my beer, wine, and liquer, and he got the marriage of food and drink spot on each time. The cosy ambience and real log fire just added to an already great experience.Great to go to a place run by people with such passion for what they do. Can't praise it highly enough.

Disregard the negative review below, book your visit by phone and you will have one of best stays and meals in Scotland. They do respond to emails but don’t expect an instant response as they are only a small concern.I don’t know how anyone can review somewhere on Trip Advisor when they didn’t actually eat or stay there!Three of us and our dog stayed at The Kilberry Inn last Friday. We had two outstanding rooms each exceptionally styled and equipped. We loved the homemade shortbread with the tea and coffee making facilities.David filled up the bird feeders in the garden area of one of our rooms for us to try and entice the red squirrels to visit whilst we were there. These small touches added to the enjoyment of our stay. We had a walk down to the beach before dinner and as the dog had muddy feet our young waitress provided us with a plastic bowl full of warm water and offered shampoo and towels so that we could wash them.We met at the bar for drinks and some excellent appetisers before dinner and David chatted to us answering our questions and providing us with some local history. He had us trying a couple of the local gins as one of us asked which he recommended.Dinner was superb, every course very well presented and tasty. The whole meal experience was faultless with quality being the key emphasis. My starter oysters were the best I have ever tasted. The aforementioned waitress was very professional with a friendly manner. We took the dog out after dinner and due to the inn’s remote location, just yards away it was so dark I couldn’t even see the dog. It must be amazing on a clear night to see the stars in the sky. We retired to our comfy beds and didn’t hear any noise during the night, it was so quiet and peaceful.Breakfast in the morning was as good as dinner with plenty of locally sourced ingredients. Again David spent time chatting with us and during our stay was always polite and attentive. We unfortunately didn't get to meet Claire but but the food she provided was the best we had during our visit to Scotland.A stay here is very good value for money and I would thoroughly recommend a visit but suggest you don’t just “rock up” on the off chance as you may be disappointed.

The visitors book of our holiday home sung the praises of this local inn. Having emailed them and received no reply we tried popping down to see if we could have supper. The owner was very unwelcoming and arrogant and told us that they were full despite there being only 4 people in the restaurant and condescendingly telling us to try Tarbert. A couple of things to remember: you never know who anybody is these days so do treat everyone with respect and charm. Word of mouth is a powerful thing.

First things first: this was an outstanding meal. One of the best we have ever had as a foodie couple. Outstanding cooking of wonderful local ingredients - including great seafood as you would expect. For great produce cooked with such skill and imagination this was in our top ten meals: right up there with the early years of Three Chimneys for those who know it.The room and breakfast were delightful. And impeccable service include warmth and understanding when circs dictated we had to arrive early and leave late. David was charming and supportive about that and much elseA delightful spot to which we shall return: note the all-in deal of dinner plus B&B is outstanding value

Had dinner during our holidays in Argyll. The quality of food is good although I've eaten better and healthier (my beef stew was too heavy and I felt somewhat sick and totally stuffed at the end of our meal). The atmosphere is quite peculiar and can be best described as "snobbish English". Only bearable if you don't listen to about 90% of the conversations in the room... Given the fact that we ate at several outstanding restaurants in Argyll, all with very hospitable atmosphere, I'd say that this place is way overrated.

Discovered this place by mere happenstance and was delighted to have done so. Despite walking in without a booking my partner and I were made extremely welcome and placed by the open fire by the host. He did his job to an extremely high standard, making excellent recommendations on wine and beer to match the truly memorable comestibles on offer. I would gladly drag myself over the broken dreams and efforts of lesser hostelries and their owners to experience such as this. Professional hospitality delivered by skilled and genuine people, backed up by excellent produce prepared to a high standard in an atmospheric and comfortable setting. Really first rate. To add to the pleasure, we were also served a delicious complimentary appetiser of potted smoked salmon with whisky jelly. After all of this I was particularly impressed at the reasonable costs incurred. The complimentary salmon alone would have attracted a price of £7 or 8 in my neck of the woods. As I'm here I feel I must point out the egregious nonsense spouted in a 3 star review below/above. The available beers are quite clearly displayed. If you choose wrongly don't blame the barman. Suck it up and move on. Also the nightly cost of the accommodation may be cause for downscoring if you stay there and it doesn't meet expectations, but to do so on hearsay... Well... That just makes you a moron. Besides, the tariff includes a three course dinner for two. A bargain at a place of this quality.

On our first day in the Mull of Kintyre and having driven the short distance from our lodge house to Kilberry we parked and went for a lovely walk with our daughter and friend. It was early evening and the Inn looked inviting so we popped in to ask if we could come in with a dog. We were asked to go around the back to the other bar which we were relieved about as the carpeted floor looked far too smart for us. My husband tried a couple of outside doors all which didn't go anywhere and ended up accidentally opening the kitchen door and asking for help to find the entrance to which he was severely chastised for calling the Inn a pub and told they were a restaurant in the most rude manner. Hasten to say we left immediately and sadly did not book a table later in the week even though the guestbook heavily sung its praises. I don't think there is any place for the 'pretty woman' treatment in hospitality, michelin bib or no michelin bib!

We were so lucky to discover this amazing and very unassuming looking restaurant whilst staying in a remote cottage in the area. Eat there and discover why it has received a Michelin Bib Gourmand award - and reading a few stickers in the window from the inside, have continued to pick up more awards. Owned by Clare Johnson and David Wilson, Clare has beaten the Hairy Bikers in a cook off as well as receiving many other famous visitors. Yet David's greeting on arrival, and ongoing conversation with guests made you feel as though you'd turned up and met with friends. Most of the people there on the night we dined were repeat visitors and we can see why. The food is locally sourced, and beautifully cooked and presented with a great and varied menu to suit all tastes. The wine list was also excellent, as was the array of other drinks on offer behind the bar. We had a fabulous evening, and enjoyed talking to a couple on an adjoining table - who were also staying the night. We look forward to visiting again when next in the area (a very long journey from home for us) and will certainly treat ourselves to the Dinner, B&B room option - which is excellent value for this quality of foot - to enable us both to fully indulge!

As always, we received a lovely welcome from David who has an amazing ability to spend time with everyone while managing to give faultless service to the entire restaurant. The service is attentive without being intrusive and in our experience very flexible. The food is sublime - Claire creates beautiful menus and the only difficult decision is which dish to choose. I don't think anyone who appreciates fine dining could be disappointed by a visit to the Kilberry Inn - fabulous seasonal seafood and best of meats cooked perfectly, the most delicious crisp buttery pastry, sensational salads and incomparable deserts. In addition to the Michelin standard, food, David is happy to recommend wine pairings - we are never disappointed. He also mixes the best Negroni!! The rooms are very comfortable and stylish with great shower rooms. Dogs are made very welcome in the large suite which has plenty of room for dog beds and a crate. Breakfast is as all other Kilberry Inn experiences... fresh, tasty and perfectly balanced. We are already looking forward to lunch at the end of the month.

I recently visited the area for the first time and, expecting options to be limited, had a quick look online and was very pleasantly surprised to find what looked like an ambitious quality orientated restaurant not excessively far from our destination in an idyllic but very remote part of the world, open 6:30 until 11:30 on the night in question, what luck.We arrived at about 8:45, having walked some distance from our accommodation. The restaurant was about half full and clientele were at various stages at or around their main courses. A table was requested but we were told the kitchen had closed 15 minutes earlier so we were out of luck (clearly desserts would not even have been ordered). We had come a long way, having literally walked miles, had no food with us and there were no other options available. We explained our situation and appealed to reason - couldn't you do anything for us? A cheese plate and glass of wine would have saved the evening and prepared us for the return walk. The answer was a flat no, why don't we try somewhere in Tarbert. We had just explained that we had walked a good distance to get there, it was approaching 9pm and Tarbert was 15 miles away! There was clearly no leeway so we left disappointed. Evening pretty much ruined. So, in short, the Kilberry Inn may look charming but we were prevented from putting it to the test and remain pretty shocked by the inhospitable reception. This is the first time I have been flatly turned away from an establishment that didn't have the excuse of either being choc full or in the process of actually closing. We were relatively smartly dressed, completely sober, entirely friendly, polite and measured throughout our encounter with who I assume was the proprietor. I have run through it all in my head more than once since and I really don't think we gave him any reason to take a dislike to us but it feels very much as if he did. That, I suppose, was his prerogative but given the circumstances we felt his attitude was inexcusable.

Honestly we never got to try their food however listen to what I have to say.Pay close attention to their opening times since when we went to check out their restaurant we saw their open sign outside so we went in as we had been anticipating our lunch for a while. We had walked some way to have our lunch there however we were turned away since they had falsely/ poorly advertised their opening times.

Two of our friends got married at Crear in the morning with the two of us witnessing the marriage. We had dinner at the Kilberry in the evening. Service was excellent, I called ahead to order a bottle of champagne which was waiting for us on arrival. Food was delicious and reasonably priced, particularly the seafood and steak. Would highly recommend, it was a perfect end to the day.

We're just back from a very relaxing and enjoyable dinner, B&B at this lovely "restaurant with rooms". The food was at the high standard we've come to expect since we were introduced to the Kilberry Inn by friends a couple of years ago and the overnight accommodation was in a well designed, beautifully furnished and fully equipped room. It goes without saying that the relaxed breakfast was a great way to start the day. We will be back and look forward to introducing our friends and guest in turn to this excellent restaurant in its lovely remote location.

A wonderful place for that special occasion. The service and food are excellent. This is not a 'cheap' place to eat, but with Michelin style fare you would not expect it to be. The tables wines are also excellent - some of the best that I have had.

When reading reviews I tend to have a little skepticism...sometimes.....especially when they are as good as these for the Kilberry Inn. How can a place be so consistently brilliant? Our two evening meals confirmed that it is a superb place to dine in every way already mentioned. But I cannot find mention of the party trick David showed us at the end of the evening! A very entertaining end to a magnificent occasion.

We spent three nights at Kilberry Inn to celebrate our anniversary. The food was incredible at every meal; we ordered the scallops for dinner twice in a row because they were so good. The desserts (puddings) were fabulous, and the Full Kilberry Breakfast was just perfect. Our room was sweet and every detail was thought of; slippers, towel warmers, tea kettle and shortbread. Even though the rooms are on the smaller side, they are super clean and they didn't cut any corners on linens, pillows, etc. What really sets The Kilberry Inn apart was the warmth from David, the owner. He really made us feel taken care of and it's clear why there was always a mix of locals and travelers here; I'd want to come back as often as I could afford it if I lived nearby too! He takes care of everyone like you are a guest in his home.

Upon arrival it was clear that the positive reviews were well founded and the 5/5 score justified. The host was very welcoming and pleasant, the building is lovely and comfortable. We had a fire roaring in the private dining room, and the atmosphere was relaxed. The menu is locally sourced and seasonal and the ingredients are treated with the highest respect. The seafood is exquisite! The wine list has something for everyone and every meal.Best of all though, is the price! Seriously good quality food and great value for money! Thanks for ending our perfect day with a perfect meal.Andy and Holly

We had the ridiculous good fortune to stay at the Kilberry Inn for a magical night in September. Everything we had read, heard and hoped about the Inn was exceeded by far in the actual experience. Tucked away on a beautiful road south of Tarbert, the Inn is cheerfully orchestrated by David and Claire, who created the most exquisite night of our trip. The room was cozy and ever so comfortable, stocked with delicious chocolate wafers and British teas. The bathroom was well-equipped, with modern fixtures, fragrant toiletries and an enthusiastic heated towel rack that readily dried our soggy socks. The food, well, this is where words fail, because Claire, the kitchen sorcerer, sends out dishes that made me wish I had two stomachs, like a cow. Had my mother not raised me not to lick my plate, I would have embarrassed myself. All ingredients are locally sourced and served in a fireplaced dining room that one never sees off a movie set. And David entertained us from the bar, mixing drinks and good jokes, all the while ensuring that we were happy and relaxed. It was hard to leave for the Islay ferry the next morning, but we know we will be back. To top it off, I left my iPad at the Kilberry, but David emailed me, packed it, mailed it to our next hotel, and assured me correctly it would be there when I arrived. After spending our delightful evening with him, I had no doubt that despite his duties at the Inn, his guests come first. Thank you for everything.

The Kilberry Inn was highly recommended so we made the effort to book and visit on a Friday for lunch. It is well off the beaten track but well worth the effort; you will not be disappointed. I, as did my wife and friend, had crab cakes to start. For main, three of us had Queenie Scallops with pistachio nuts and my wife had Haddock gratin. Our other friend, who declined the starter in favour of 'pud', had the most ginormous Sticky Toffee pudding. The service was very friendly, efficient and the quality of the food was excellent and the cost was not too bad considering the standard and quality.Afterwards you can 'walk-off' lunch by wandering down to the Kilberry standing stones which is a medieval site.Highly recommended.

The Kilberry Inn is not the kind of place that one decides to simply go for a quick bite to eat (unless, of course, you are blessed and live in Lochgilphead or Tarbert, or somewhere nearby), or you happen to chance upon it as you drive past. This is what I would describe as a destination experience. It is completely off the beaten track but the journey is worth every mile or minute.I believe David, who is the front of house, was a Cocktail master in Rogano's in Glasgow at some point and watching him flick a bottle with one hand, as he makes a cocktail, I have no doubt that he is truly a Black belt in the art of cocktail making. Try out his Negroni which is an absolute sensation!Clare is the most unassuming of Chefs that I have ever seen. She toils away in the kitchen, delivering the most amazingly mouthwatering food which is cooked to perfection. The produce is mainly local, fresh, and delicious. The presentation is wonderful, with no pretences such as "white space" or silly towers. The Inn itself is cosy and it is wonderful to see diners quickly getting to know each other and become friends, without any feeling of obtrusiveness. On the night that we were there, the couple on the table across from us were offering to buy us drinks as the night wore on and the conversation continued. At no point did we feel that we needed to leave and we were no longer welcome. I have been to City Centre Restaurants where they even begin to stack the chairs on the adjacent tables. Here, this couple who run this Inn, have to rise and shine, no matter when their guests choose to leave the previous night, as they have to ensure that their in house guests get a spectacular breakfast the following morning. The mathematics is simple folks. An Inn/Restaurant has got to be bloody good to survive if is located away from any major conurbation. The Kilberry Inn has rooms which I believe are absolutely excellent and very reasonably priced, and the breakfasts are sensational. I have not as yet had the pleasure of trying out their rooms but friends of mine who have, were very pleased indeed. I would thoroughly recommend this place, and the views of the night sky, with no light pollution are spectacular. We even got to see the "Blood Moon"!Please note that we have dined often at the Kilberry Inn and we know the owners well.I can assure anyone reading this review, that there is no element of positive personal bias, or any business/financial incentive attached. I simply felt that the time had come to add a review. Readers looking at reviews of this establishment will no doubt be able to make up their own minds as I could not find any unfavorable reviews from others.Arup

The menu is not extensive but gives a good range of tastes and every dish is superbly executed.A fabulous place for a quiet tête a tête, or small friendly gathering.

I hesitated before writing a review of a restaurant that is clearly so enjoyed by all who visit. It is just so great that I feel a need to say David you have produced something that is simply divine. We had been trying to get to The Kilberry Inn for almost two years but it is so remote that we had to plan our holiday itinerary around it. Having done this we naturally assumed it wouldn't live up to our expectations! They were exceeded! One visits so few places where just everything is just right. Davids attention to detail is exceptional. Great accommodation, genuinely friendly atmosphere, and simply perfect food. We booked for two nights and had such good time that we changed our itinerary so as to return on our way home. We are now working on a break next year based on The Kilberry's opening times. Difficult as the ferries from Kennacraig are limited. However we will be there!

What an amazing place the Kilberry Inn is and David and Clare make this the highly commended venue it is. Car trouble meant we thought we might have to cancel the reservation; the venue has such a well earned reputation that re-booking for another evening during our was not possible. It looked as if the end to a fantastic wedding day on the beach overlooking Jura might just be tarnished.... Not on the watch of the exceptionally hospitable David!! He and his brother left the comfort of the restaurant and drove to pick us up to ensure we still got to enjoy the fantastic experience that we were so looking forward to. That's the most fantastic service I've ever experienced. The restaurant is beautifully presented and the attention to detail reflects the very high standard of the whole experience. The menu choice was beyond expectations - clearly influenced by local seasonal produce; it all sounded delicious, but our final selection allowed us to explore just some of those wonderful flavours that most appealed to us - and they were well rewarded! The food was served promptly, beautifully presented and the combination of ingredients and flavours were the work of an artisan. An extensive wine list at really good prices was on offer and our choice of Puglian Rose was an inspired choice to complement the food.Throughout the evening David was an exceptional host; friendly and always ready to assist, but professionally courteous; nothing seemed to be too much trouble and always responded to with "it's a pleasure" - and I believe he meant it too. This was one of the most memorable evenings I've ever enjoyed and I truly look forward to returning to enjoy it all over again as soon as possible. This has to be the most highly recommendable venue I've visited and an experience every visitor to the Scottish West Coast and Kintyre should make the effort to enjoy. If you don't - you'll have missed out on one of life's essential experiences

We (family of four) enjoyed a wonderful dinner here. We stayed overnight in the rooms that are part of the Inn too, so enjoyed a fantastic breakfast as well. The dinner was extraordinary. Everything was just right. That hardly ever happens! I can't remember what each of us ordered, but I do remember that the scallops were really nicely prepared and delicious. The langoustines were also great, and everyone enjoyed all their choices from start to finish. The wine list is really well done, and there is a great selection of whiskies for after dinner. David was a very gracious host and very helpful when we sought advice on everything from what whiskies to try, to where we could go to try to spot otters at play. This was a splurge for us, so it was wonderful that it lived up to (actually it exceeded) our hopes. We thoroughly enjoyed the food- with fresh flavors and tastes we had never had before, all in a wonderful setting. This place exudes perfectionism but is not overly fussy. Highly recommended. Wish we could have stayed longer and explored the area more.

This has to be one of the best restaurants I have visited (and I have visited many worldwide). Most people go on holiday then check the local information for somewhere good to eat. My advice with the Kilberry Inn is do the reverse! Book to eat here then try and work out what kind of holiday you can have locally! (And there are some pretty amazing places here too). The food was excellent (and local where possible) and although a small team, the service was also really good (didn't even notice the choreography, which is a good sign). It all went by really quickly and before I knew it we were gone. Will have to wait for another excuse to come here, but will try my best!

Since first visiting three years ago, we make the effort to return and treat ourselves at least twice a year to sample the Kilberry Inn experience, it reminds us of the Best of Scotland and all it has to offer (and we live in Scotland too at that).Due to being fully booked, we had to settle for somewhere else (less fortunate for us) to stay, which was a bit of a downer but it is tribute to David and Clare and the success of the Kilberry Inn.David, as always, was warm and welcoming, knowing it was our first anniversary welcomed as old friends and immediately presented us with a glass of fizz before seating us at our table. The reputation really does the The Kilberry Inn proud, and the fact that the restaurant was fully booked being 13 miles away from the rest of civilisation speaks for itself. As always the food prepared by Clare and the team was excellent, to start we had the scampi soup and the fresh crab cakes, for mains we both had the 10oz rib eye (rare) and it was superb, and for desert the STP with ice cream. All finished off with one of David's G and T's made as only David can make them. Can't wait until November when we return for a weekend of being spoilt by Clare, David and the team

Sublime menu with variety of local seafood and hearty meat dishes - and freedom to mix and match (eg soup and starter rather than fixed 2 or 3 course). As we were under our own power, pudding was a must and the sticky toffee was highly rated (light and oh so sweet) as was my Tunisian orange cake. Good value and we were well content. One of these places I've wanted to go to for ages and finally we made it - though at short notice dinner was fully booked so lunch was 'it'.And what a lovely , memorable lunch it was! Nice homemade bread. Crab cake starter was lovely. A strong flavour of fresh crab (even a tiny bit of shell!) but moist and more - ish.The biggest langoustines I've ever seen - yet still really sweet and tasty.Plenty of them too.The only time it's been worth it to ease out what is in the claws, impressive.Sticky toffee pudding was light though I always wish they'd serve more sauce or else cut down the sheer size of the pudding sponge itself.Too much. It's a very attractive place inside too - stone walls and fresh wildflowers.Charming all round and lovely posh soap in the toilets! Really loved the Wee Bar outside - a converted red telephone box complete with one high seat inside. For those 'want to get away from everybody' moments....Very professional , polished yet really friendly service from the owner who seems genuinely interested in you as a customer. You don't always get that combination pulled off so effortlessly - no wonder the place works so well. The whole peninsula was a new one to us and it is really beautiful. Jura shimmering on the horizon. The green and turquoise sea. Little white beaches dotted about. And hardly a soul there.Lots of big Atlantic Grey seals swimming off shore and watching us as we strolled along. They are so curious.Don't miss the lovely ancient grave slabs close by within a small shelter.Very impressive.Another beautiful part of Scotland - well worth a tour.So much to see.And so says a bit of a fuss -pot.
