We went for lunch and chose sandwiches, cheesy chips and onion rings. We expected small plates and bowls but what we got were platters of everything. The prawn Marie rose sandwich was packed with succulent prawns and accompanied by tortilla chips and a fresh chopped salad. The 50p extra for cheese on the chips surely didn’t cover the cost for the amount of melted cheese. All in all it beat us and we can eat! Thank you for a marvellous lunch. RECOMMEND!*****

When you think of the perfectly British and idyllic pub, you think of open log fires, welcoming staff, cosy seats and the smell of a delicious home cooked Sunday roast dinner.. and this is what the John Thompson provides (and so much more!) With views of the Derbyshire countryside and rivers, the pub is the perfect establishment for a cosy evening drink inside by the fire, or an afternoon tipple in the sunshine. Not only that, on a Sunday, the previous landlady’s wife, Mrs T, returns and provides the most delicious Sunday Roast carvery, with a variety of British meats, and divine homemade gravy. It certainly isn’t one to miss. The landlord, Nick, runs an incredibly well run establishment, and the bar staff, James, provides a wonderfully friendly and welcoming manner during your entire stay. The locals, are obviously return (and rightly so!) are friendly, and the welcoming dogs - from black schnauzers, to a labrador - are adorable and clearly are regulars in the pub so are welcomed and only enhance the visit. I certainly will continue to keep visiting and, truthfully, have found it hard to find a pub across the UK which has come close to what the John Thompson provides.

A huge thank you to Nick, Ann & JT for the most perfect afternoon for my Mum’s “farewell”. The candles lit, the warm, comfortable environment and the most attentive staff. A truly special place to me and my family. The fact that this family run pub hasn’t changed its “core” since i can remember, speaks volumes. The best welcome, the best roasts and the lovely, traditional pub it has always been. Thank you again. Could not have asked for better.

Went with friends and we had a great time! Food We had the carvary and it was probably home made delicious with two choices steak pie or beef! But both where excellent. The veg were brilliant cooked just right! The pub was fully accessible with a ramp up to the front door. Though the inner door was tough to open. Staff were both helpful and made you feel like the only person in the pub. A really good old fashioned example of good service but paying attention to detail and customer service. So often pubs and restaurants don’t give a good service but this one really does!

Proper pub grub. A Sunday in October, but alas, no roaring fires yet. Derbyshire folk ain't nesh. had some family visiting, so Sunday lunch at The JT seemed like the ideal thing. Arrived here, only for Bro-In-Law to recognise it from 20 years ago - "That place with it's own brewery." Yup, still is. Two carvery meals, and one lasagne, all done with no fuss n bother. Food was great, and filling - no room for pudds, alas. Not very fancy, but very satisfying.

The carvery veg was obviously frozen/tinned my whole dinner tasted like warm water, apart from the meat. The roast potatoes were cooked from frozen and burnt to the point it was difficult to cut, even the apple sauce tasted watery. I did advise a member of staff, like it asked you to on their menu as ‘opposed to writing a bad review on trip advisor’ and all that was said was ‘oh I’m really sorry about that’. My sons chicken goujons , off the kids menu, were very spicy too. Really wouldn’t eat here again however the views was nice and had a good country feel to it so I suppose it would be nice to have a pint there. Wouldn’t visit again however.

It was fabulous beef, didn’t have the pork, but the others said it was good. A great place for Sunday lunch. Better than cooking yourself. It was properly served, no bunfight, the lady served the meat generously and the roast and Yorkshire pud. You help yourself to the rest. The desserts were eaten by the other three. Staff were friendly when we arrived and we ordered quickly as it was 7 mins before the kitchen closed. We were just looking to eat sandwiches etc. and the sandwiches were fine. I ordered a salad and on the menu it stated that it was with a selection of cheeses. When I collected it from the salad bar - I was handed a small bowl about 8 cm wide full of grated cheddar cheese. I suddenly doubted I had read the menu right so took it and checked the menu when I was back at our table. I knew the kitchen was now closed and as my son and partner were already eating their sandwiches, I gave the very rubbery cheese to the dog. When the waitress came to take our plates, she didn't ask if we enjoyed our meal, but I said that I had been expecting a selection of cheeses. She was pleasant but didn't apologise - just said she would check with the kitchen staff, but didn't return. The waitress should know what is on the menu and should not bring food out that isn't correct. The chips were very dry - I appreciate it was the end of the lunch hour, but if you are serving food, the quality should be the same throughout - as the price is still the same. We sat outside and the wooden tables were in poor condition but it did look very nice inside.

We call in here on average once a year in the hope each time it's turned into a treasure - we live quite close by and a pub/brewery should be a winning combination. Each time however it's always disappointing! Take nothing away from it, a fabulous building, beautiful gardens and stunning views. And it's been going for years, so some folks obviously love it. But very lacklustre service, on the evening, the poor barmaid couldn't remember our (small) drinks order and it became like an episode of Dinnerladies, and then wine which was so awful I couldn't drink it, meant we agreed with regret we wouldn't venture to order food. There's always next year....

Decided on a trip to The John Thompson for lunch as had not visited for some time. As we arrived there were quite a few walkers in the car park but we went in and found a table. Drinks were purchased from the bar & served by Nick Thompson. A pint of JT Gold was very well received and reminded us of how good their own beer is. 2 roast beef lunches and a jacket potato were ordered. The beef was as usual a large joint and you could help yourself to a good selection of vegetables. The jacket potato was brought to the table and my friend advised that it was very good. The beef too was excellent. Dessert was Strawberry & Apple crumble which was not my first choice but they had no bread & butter pudding left! Prices were very reasonable £8.95 for the roast beef, £4.25 for the jacket potato and £3.75 for the crumble with custard. Pub had been updated a little with new carpet and light fittings since our last time there but still the same old world charm. Will be visiting again soon for a drink and hopefully sampling their lovely food again.

Tucked away from the hurly burly of modern life is an old pub and brewery called the John Thompson. Week day lunches are very special, whilst there's not a huge choice, usually a rich home made pie and a huge joint of roast beef and a salad should you be able to walk past the pie and the roast. It's a carvery, very generous portions of the most delicious roast beef. Cooked for at least four hours, cooked to perfection. Tasty moist and tender, Derbyshire beef at its very best. Then help yourself to a wide range of wonderful fresh vegetables. Pair this wonderful food with a glass of John Thompson beer, brewed on the premises too. I give it six stars if I could. Downsides? Don't be silly, there aren't any!But please don't give, as there might not be room for me. ..........

Returned to the John Thompson for the first time in many years, really enjoyed our time there, we had lunch and drinks. The food was delicious including the fabulous bread and butter pudding. It is an out of the way place, but well worth the drive. It was nice to see and talk to John and Anne again, it's like going home again. They also have some wooden lodges to rent if you wish to stay.

We went to the John Thompson inn on speck as we fancied a traditional Sunday Lunch and hosts welcomed us to a very busy Sunday Lunch session, the open hearth fire was glowing which added to the country Pub charm, the atmosphere was just delightful, we had the Carvery which had Beef or Turkey as the main choices, we tried one each along with the usual trimmings of roasters and Yorkshire puds and veg, the food was excellent really nicely cooked a super Sunday treat and well worth the journey, the staff were attentive and very helpful, we can highly recommend the John Thompson to those of us that appreciate good food in an excellent setting, the ale was brewed at the premises so overall we couldn't fault our experience, the place is set in a really nice country side location on the river

Location, particularly in summer months, is ideal. Food is limited and average but the owner/manager has shown the attitude during several visits that he thinks he is doing you a favour letting you in.

Good value and lovely food. Option of small or standard plate - desserts looked lovely but couldn't manage one after the main course.

We stayed in one of the log cabins there, fantastic , felt like being in the middle of nowhere when it was dark, so peaceful. Loved the wildlife too, Saw bats, heard owls at night, During the day there were squirrels, rabbits and we even had a wren land on the step of the open door as we sat there. The owner has a black Labrador, who came to the cabin in the morning for a cuddle, she was a sweetie. We didn't eat there , but did go into the pub for a drink at night, must say the beer they brew on the premises is gorgeous. For a couple wanting a bolt hole, this is it,

Excellent Sunday lunch. My sister and I reserved a table for this Sunday past & were glad we had as it was quite busy .Howeverthe carvery was excellent-a choice of beef or pork carved from a very large roast-or a mixture if preferred!lovely Yorkshires &a plentiful supply of roast potatoes or new-with a great choice of veg.I managed to squeeze in a light pud. but I could hardly move afterwards. It was very good value for the money paid.I would heartily recommend it to any visitor.

I have previously left a positive review but felt compelled to leave another after a bank holiday visit. 3 of us visited for lunch and sat in the beautiful grounds in baking sunshine. There was a very relaxed atmosphere and the team were all extremely pleasant. We all had hot beef sandwiches served with roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding which were incredibly reasonable. We ended up staying for 3 hours; it was that nice a place to be!

The JT is set in rural Ingleby but not too far out for it to be a problem. They offer lunch and evening meals but the one to go for is the lunchtime carvery which is served daily between 12 noon - 2 pm. The beef is particularly good and served with yorkshire pudding and a good selection of vegetables. It can get very busy but the staff are so well trained and helpful it never takes too long to get served. There is a lovely outside seating area, family room and the pub so you can usually get a seat but would recommend booking on a Sunday. There is a pudding menu ranging from ice cream to Creme Bruele to Bread & Butter pudding, all worth a try! Definitely a pub to keep on a list of favorites.

Lovely pub, nice outdoor seating area in a lovely quiet spot with no road noise. Check out local walks to Anchor Church/Foremark while you're there. We only had a drink during our visit but the carvery smelled wonderful and looked delicious.

Popped by to this lovely traditional pub by the river trent for lunch. Wasn't quite 12 when we got there but the pleasant bar staff explained we could place our order. Carvery on offer as well as a selection of sandwiches and jacket potatoes. The vegetarian choice which I opted for was Mediterranean risotto whilst my partner had tuna mayo jacket potatoe. The pub boasts it's own micro brewery if you like Ale. In winter there are open fires. There is plenty of seating and snug areas. Desert menu available but we were in a rush. If in the area be sure to visit makes a refreshing change from the large chain's.

Just back from a fantastic 2hr walk and called in at this "dog-friendly" pub. No dog water bowl to be seen anywhere! Was going to buy some beer, but decided not to bother - got some at home. What a shame.

Excellent, for a quick, home cooked roast lunch. Pleasant staff & atmosphere. Even the family dog Stella does her rounds. The homemade Bread & Butter Pudding is the best I've ever tasted.

We went on a whim, for just a coffee, and decided to add a bucket of chips. Staff were lovely and welcoming although they were busy. Chips were fat and crispy with melting insides. Coffee good too. There are lots of cosy separate areas with open fires, and a conservatory... wood not plastic...with a stone floor, where dogs were welcome. High chairs for young children. Excellent all round. And independent.

Absolutely brilliantly kept pub with amazing Sunday carvery, a very well kept 'home brewed' cellar all run and served by a long running family and owners of the property.

it is some years since we stop and had lunch at the John Thompson, with it's own microbrewery but we were made welcome and the freshly prepared food and real ale were excellent. the carver was wonderful but there are other choices equally good. The sticky toffee pudding to follow was very good. We will be back soon.

We plan our route from Lancashire to Buckinghamshire (or, as in this case, the return journey) to catch lunch here in the 12 to 2pm window they are open. Once again, the M40 was closed due to a crash as we left Beaconsfield, and there were also problems on the M1, so we took the old A road route and it was 1.20pm rather than soon after 12noon when we arrived. The welcome, the carvery itself, and the dessert (Apple and strawberry crumble) were all excellent. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Lovely location by the river, not far from the causeway and road to Derby . Received a warm friendly welcome from staff and I loved the warm, cosy interior with roaring fireplaces, dark wooden beams and carvings on the bar.The homefare was limited but enough to satisfy all, especially especially those who like beef.If I was to visit this area again, I would certainly recommend returning here again.
