This is a bar named after a poet so it is apropos that the inside is tranquil allowing you to think, write, be mindful. There is live music most nights and there are lovely paintings to admire. If you are looking for a mellow, not at all raucous place to have a pint or a bite to eat don't look further than this terrific pub in the Cathedral District (just a block or two south of the eponymous cathedral (St. Anne's).

The Hewitt has always shone on both service and food and it has kept pace with some interesting new beers. As a relatively 'young' bar it always seemed to be familiar, even well established. If today's visit is representative, it may be loosing it touch with lunchtime food. The hake was plentiful enough, but instead of fresh fish this was a salted and overcooked offering. My own duck 'special' again was plentiful, but way over cooked. Both were served with uninspiring noodles. This is the first visit in which I haven't been delighted with a meal here.

Nice atmosphere, lots of history (the clue is in the name) and memoribilia on the walls, a good buzz in the evenings (if you pick the right evening, I guess.. open mic nights can be fun in a mad sort of way), and during the day it's more of a chilled old man's pub that is also a good gastropub.

I hadn't been into the John Hewitt for a while and last time I was in, it was OK. I've always known it to be a half-decent, boozy sanctuary for hacks and gossipers where reputations rose and fell.I popped in for a quick pint last Friday and being a bit of an insufferable beer snob thought I would have been able to find something to float my boat, but the beer choice is frankly rubbish. On realising this, I asked the lady behind the bar if they had at least had bottles of harp or export stout, which has been a mainstay of the traditional NI pub (which this place purports to be). The response was ambivalence bordering on rude and clearly she was keen to serve my slop and move on, so I had a half of the cask ale that they had on. I think it was Whitstable Bay but it was god awful, so ended up having a half of brewdog dead pony which was the only half decent, non-mainstream beer available. I was going to go have a coffee, but the crappy automatic machine made me knock that on the head. Place was littered with cheap promo posters and most annoyingly of all one of those god-awful, massive, oversized Hophouse 13 signs in the corner which is the mark of the place at the moment.I expected more of the John given its exalted reputation but quite frankly it was really disappointing. Similar to the Hudson Bar... what was a half decent bar appears to have gone to the dogs and appeals only to the sort of clientele that has really low expectations of what it's consuming. The bar has been raised in respect of much of the quality of Belfast's hospitality offering (beyond dishing out pints of Guinness anyway). The JH needs to rise to this and appeal to more discerning customers and tourists alike.

None of our city centre bars reach the standard of the Old Kitchen Bar, but at least the Hewitt makes an effort to serve decent lunchtime food. The drink is also decent, if underwhelming and sometimes a good ale makes it on to the roster. The consistently good standard of service is also noteworthy, but the house PA system is nothing short of disgraceful for an establishment so strong in live music.

I am visiting Belfast for a week with my family for an Irish Dance competition. On Halloween night, we were stuck at the competition late and on my way home I stopped at this pub for a pint of beer and a burger for a late dinner around 9:15pm... The bar tender told me that they stopped serving food around 8pm on weekdays..... This was very surprisingly as Belfast is a very busy Irish city and there were lots of people in the pub drinking at that time. I guess the Irish don't like to munch of food while they are drinking at night... The next 4 other pubs I went to told me the same thing no food! All the pub kitchens were closed on weekdays around 8pm... I finally found one that made me a burger for my late dinner. Otherwise it seem like a typical quiant Irish pub that I was disappointed I couldn't eat in!

We got caught in the rain and stumbled across this pub for a bit of shelter, to get warm. What better way than with an Irish Coffee before lunch. This is the only place I have ever been asked how much sugar I wanted before the coffee was made, so the drink was served ready. Usually, you end up spoiling the effect putting your own sugar in and trying to stir it without messing up the cream/coffee interface. Lovely, friendly pub.

An absolutely beautiful bar located at the start of the Cathedral Quarter, went here as the start of a rather messy pub crawl and it was excellent, great music great atmosphere and great staff

This is an unique bar with great food and a wide selection of craft beers. With all profits going to support the local Belfast Centre for the Unemployed, this is a great place to meet progressive people and hear some local bands. Must be one of the friendliest pubs in N.Ireland.

Had lunch, food was great, I'd give 4 ⭐️for that but, toilets were beyond smelly, there was dust everywhere, a sense of just no one really caring about this place, windows covered over, dark, and a barman wittering on about some gin, apparently it used to be a great pub, clearly been awhile. Guinnes was good though.

The fish and chips were excellent. It was a very filling lunch! It was neat to look at the various pictures, signs on the walls since this is one of the older bars in the area. We went at lunch time and it wasn't too busy, which was nice.

We went to Bites of India before a gig. We went on recommendations of a friend and were not disappointed! The interior is smart and low key. The food is the key here. We shared a starter - chicken t
