Really disappointed 😞, invited friends out for dinner, as we have always loved the Houston Inn. Food very average almost feels like it's been bought over by a chain. Drinks selection also poor, no choice of different wines or price range. Staff seemed not to listen or maybe they couldn't here us because of the loud music. This was only at 7pm. Shame, won't be recomending or be back until things improve.

Would give a rating of less than one if it were possible. Waited 1.5 hours for food, when it arrived it became apparent we could have done better ourselves. Note to restaurant: sweet chilli dip is not salsa and guacamole ideally would have met an avocado in its life. Waiting staff were pleasant and did well despite the embarrassment they must feel when working with such a slow and incompetent kitchen.

We went with friends to celebrate the birth of their new granddaughter and had a table booked for 5pm.. We had our starters which were served fairly promptly and were good. We then sat for nearly an hour waiting for our mains before a young waitress came over to our table and said they there were having problems in the kitchen. There was a table of twelve people celebrating an anniversary and because three of them had ordered curries it seems they didn’t have any rice left for my husband’s curry!! After agreeing to have chips with his curry the waitress brought myself and my friend our pasta mains, which we had almost finished before our husbands got their mains; my husband’s curry was supposed to come with spicy onions but there were none on his plate, and the curry, costing nearly £16, had five smallish pieces of chicken in it. It was certainly not value for money. My friend’s husband had ordered a pizza for his main, apparently a house special, and it was the smallest pizza I have ever seen being served in a restaurant; it looked like a child’s pizza from a supermarket! We will definitely never ever be back. When considering where to go for the evening we thought we would stay local and support our local pub …how wrong were we? Lesson learned!! 😡

Friends & I went here for lunch recently and arrived to find that the place was completely empty - not a good start. The experience did not get any better. Service was abominable - seemed to be very little staff - and the waiting time for drinks and food was ridiculous, especially since we were the only ones in the place! To add insult to injury, a table who had arrived a while after us were served before us! Also, the food was hardly worth waiting for - and the place didn't get any busier while we were there. Never again.

Shocker of a dinner we just had as a family. The service was terrible, and the food was worse, the laminated menu had the previous persons food stuck to it. (Great start) Kids meals came without vegetables. The fish and chips also minus the peas even though it states it on the menu. The Tartare sauce was a watery mess and the fish was overcooked to perfection! Not a good experience for a sunday dinner.

Visiting friends and was taken for lunch in this lovely wee pub. We had a few light bites and had a few drinks. The outside beer garden is lovely. Food tasty and plentiful . Was served by a lady ( sorry forgot her name) may have been the manager. She was very attentive and made us feel very welcome . The inside is a beautiful wee place and very comfortable. Why haven’t I been here before. ? I will most definitely be back with family and friend. Would definitely recommend.

Very sad to write about our experience on Christmas Day, service was poor, sat at the table 15/20 mins and starter was served, no drinks order had been taken at this point, starters finish and finally the 1st round of drinks served, sat with dirty dishes between meals for a very long time, food in general very disappointing, mash lumpy and all in all very plain for Xmas day, veg wasn’t even seasoned and none of the courses were particularly warm. We asked when booking for a high chair, no high chair was provided I had to ask twice for 1 and was given a broken and very unsafe high chair, I complained, it was replaced by another broken high chair!! I then had to begin to feed my 7 month old in her buggy!! Eventually when another family left we were give a working safe high chair! The wait between mains and dessert was lllllllloooooooonnnnnnnng! And again when we were finished had to ask for teas and coffees we were never offered , staff appeared to struggle to smile, let alone get in the Christmas spirit! Such a disappointing experience from a lovely little pub/restaurant not worth £70 a head and to be honest I feel we die some kind of refund!!

Three night stay, booked a twin room, arrived to a double - with all the twins booked. It could have proved awkward if it wasn't for family living local, so son squeezed in with them until second night. Sadly no discount or even a free breakfast to compensate for their error. The second and third nights were spent in a twin, which was spacious and clean. Sadly one shared bathroom between all 6 or 7 rooms. Over a pub? When you've not had a pint or two?Restaraunt closes at 9pm (sharp, belive me) on a Saturday, as it does elsewhere in a 4 mile radius for some odd reason, so chippy tea elsewhere if you're lucky,The pub itself was lively, good choice of beers at reasonable prices, with freindly staff.

Went out for a family meal, was really looking forward to it as we had a meal there in Jan and it was so nice I was really looking forward to going back. The positives - a couple of the starters were nice and the macaroni. Now for the not so good. The soup was watery and it was served with a soggy roll which we can only assume was partially defrosted in the microwaveThe steak pie couldn't be finished as half was left as it was fatty. The pastry wasn't nice either it was like it had only partially risen. The veggie burger was like a potato burger on a bun certainly not worth the money and the chips partially cooked and slightly hard in the middle. We asked the chef if they could make something vegan and I was told he could make me a chickpea curry - no other options so would go with that. What I actually got was a tin of chickpeas in a Chinese curry mix sauce - you know the type you might get with curried chips. Not what I expected from a chef. We waited an hour and a half for the food I cannot believe this is the same place we ate in Jan. I can only assume it's changed hands or changed chef. We won't be back unless we hear it's improved. We were so looking forward to this family meal, and it was so below average. I can't recommend this place anymore.

I think that extra staff should have been available in kitchen and also help with waiting tables. Perhaps the owners should review their staffing numbers. I should say the food was very nice but spoiled by the time taken to deliver to our table. Should I go back ? Not sure .

We went for afternoon tea and it's just as well they don't change a fortune for this.....First of all, the booking was for two, I phoned up 2 hours prior to arriving to see if it was possible to change it to 3 and they had no note of the original booking.Good start...They were very accommodating though and said it was no problem to include 3 which was good and the gentleman I spoke to was very pleasant But when we arrived it was clear to see why this wasn't a problem. There was only one other table in.This might have been because it was a lovely day. So we had afternoon tea for 3.Tea was brought first and soft drinks where ordered, which never arrived and had to be asked for again. The tea consisted of 3 quarter sandwiches each, half a scone, half a little pineapple cake, a triangle of gingerbread and a triangle of caramel shortcake, each. Now this is where my problem is.All of this was clearly shop bought, none of it was fresh which you would expect but not only was it not fresh the gingerbread and the caramel shortcake was stale so was probably a good few days old.We were disappointed but as it didn't cost much, we probably shouldn't have expected much. The staff were very pleasant though, maybe could be a little more attentive.

At times (weekend evenings) it can be very noisy and I believe there is live music; so; days which we avoid. It is a cosy place to wine and dine – whether it’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

We went for dinner tonight with our 3 children having been before on our own and really enjoyed it thought it be nice to return with the family. Having waiting awhile for Kids menus we had to then ask again for them drinks (the drink was wrong) we asked for the kids meals to come with our starters one meal came for one child when we eventually got to ask about the other 2 kids meals were told the chef had missed them! By time the came our other child had finished his meal. Asked for ice cream sundaes for them ice cream came in bowls! So not Sundaes! Then waited for spoons for ice cream which my other half ended up going to get himself as kids were getting restless! To be fair the food was very nice. It was the service that let them down.

A year later and back for another wonderful Burn's supper at the Houston Inn. The restaurant at the back can only seat about 50 covers so it was a bit, well cosy shall we say? However the entertainment and the food by chef Iain Halket was fantastic once again this year. His Beggar's Purses, filo parcels of haggis & neeps with tatties served with a whisky cream sauce, wow! The speakers Gordon Mayer & Bobby Tait were very entertaining. Gordon was especially good, his rendering of Holly Wullie's Prayer was amazing. Maria Wilson's version of a couple of Burn's songs just put the ''Icing on the cake'' for us all. I'm looking forward to next year already.

Poor, poor. Food not hot and service absolutely shocking. 30 minutes to get a drinks order to the table and 25 minutes for a starter. When main courses came there was a gap of around 10 minutes or so until the side of onion rings came to the table.

30 members of the Hillman Imp Club descended on the Houston Inn for our Festive meal and it was excellent. The friendly efficient staff made us welcome and this was accompanied by some excellent courses. All members enjoyed the experience and want me to book it for next year. We all would highly recommend the Houston Inn for atmosphere and great food.

My wife and I had a rare, kid free day so went for lunch. We have tried everywhere else in the village and have heard good things about the Houston inn. Friendly staff, good menu, nice decor. Not overly impressed with the range of beers on tap (others in the village have draught Italian beers) but settled for bottled Peroni. Food was good, but pretty standard. We sat in a booth in the lounge which was warm and comfortable. Very good, will be back.

We were visiting family in Houston and had dinner in the Inn a few times. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The food exceeded our expectations so we returned again and again. We understand they also offer accommodation so when we're back up in Scotland we'll definitely book.

We visit fairly regularly since moving to the area just over a year ago. Very pleasant, friendly staff and good service. Food good and portions also. However, the menu could do with a few more choices.Scubaandy

We stay locally and often visit this pub, have had birthday celebrations and nights out with friends. It's the one of the 3 pubs in the village that we visit more often.

We went for an early evening meal. The menu was standard Pub Grub. I chose Sirloin Steak (rare) and my wife. Scampi. Both portions were plentiful without being outrageous. The steak was perfectly cooked and I'm told that the Scampi was delicious.Excellent service from the very friendly staff.Although living locally, I hadn't been in for a while.I'll rectify that.

The meal was good but not great. The roast beef was over cooked and dry for my taste. The green vegetables were sparse and there were too many potatoes although they were well cooked. The service was very good and the atmosphere was good. The 2 course lunch did not include a sweet option although it included a starter.

Visited for lunch and was really disappointed. The service was pleasant but the food was very poor. We both ordered baked potatoes which should be really easy to get right. When they arrived one with tuna/ red onion and the other with chilli chicken they looked poor. Overcooked very small potatoes with the filling served separately, tiny dish of poor quality coleslaw, crisps and salad. We ordered coffees afterwards and one slice of caramelised orange cheesecake. The cheesecake was fine but was the smallest piece. Definitely wont be back.

Food was good but the offers are very limited in my opinion. We enjoyed what we had and the atmosphere is lovely, very comfortable. The staff are helpful and cheery which would encourage a return visit. Just need bit more choice on the menu.

This is the type on bar restaurant that is very busy on weekends as the bar and restaurant are only separated by a few stairs going up one level, on the afternoon we visited the bar was not to busy and the noise level was okay but I can imagine that on days or evenings when they are very busy the noise would be very loud, we were there for lunch which was very nice but value for money for the children was poor, on this. visit we also took my elderly mother and she didn't like the fact that you walked through the bar to get to the restaurant, overall this would not be my first choice for lunch with family

I recently visited the Houston Inn for lunch with my wife for the first time. We both had chicken fajitas which were excellent. The prices on the menu did appear expensive at first but we were pleasantly surprised to find that there was a special meal deal on Mondays. We will definitely make a return visit.

Distinctly average pub grub served at inflated prices. During our visit the waitress missed an order and left one of us getting our food 10 minutes after everyone else had eaten. Also the fish dish was full of bones even though the manager assured us the chef had checked the fish himself. Somehow I don't think this was true, there were several large bones in the dish making it inedible and very off-putting. In fairness the manager apologised and didn't charge for the 2 meals that had issues with them. The pub itself is lovely for a drink but the restaurant needs improving, average food served at above average prices.
