Had lunch there with relatives, menu very eclectic in an obvious attempt to be adventurous. However one of our party could not find anything they could eat & some choices were less than palatable. Needless to say we won't be back.

Fantastic. Everything about this place is beautifully done, plus it has a magic ingredient - wonderful hosts and team. A full restaurant tells its own story and I can see why it's busy. A 5 star experience.

Had lunch here last week for a special occasion for a few people. Ambience and food were excellent; food came out quickly and everyone really enjoyed it. Most of the staff were super but a couple of them were really unwelcoming at first and didn’t seem pleased to see us at all; I felt like I was getting in their way. Again when we were leaving a couple of the team just looked past us, rather than saying ‘thanks/bye’ etc. first impressions and how you’re made to feel as a customer are so important. My comments are made in the spirit of giving constructive feedback, not as a complaint, and I hope the owners will take on board. We would definitely go back.

What can I say if I could give 10 stars I would have done I had a work party here on Friday night. The service so the food was amazing. U had the pumpkin soup followed by the trout and the flavours were out of this world. I'm just annoyed I didn't get a chance yo try the puddings as I was so full. Really would recommend this place highly. I hsvnt had food like this in a long time . Well done to all of the team and the kitchen staff.

Really lovely pub, but disappointed to find no vegetarian roast option and no vegan option at all on the menu. They did accommodate us by adding some pumpkin from a veggie meal onto the plate with the roast trimmings, however a plate of root veg + kale is not all that satisfying for £14. Still giving 4 stars as it's a really nice pub, they did accommodate the best they could, just surprising in 2023 for there to not be a decent roast option for someone who chooses to not eat meat.

Just popped in for a drink. Sat in the garden, and there were children kicking a football around. So if you were trying to have a quiet drink, you need to be careful that the ball doesn't hit you or your glass. Not really the right atmosphere for a upmarket country pub. Disappointing 😞

Excellent food and lovely friendly staff. Stayed here with a friend for some R&R and quality time together. Next to Petworth for some stunning walks/runs. Food is seasonal and prepared to the highest standards. Breakfast (included in the price) worth £30 alone. Room was very clean - country shabby chic vibes - comfortable beds, basic but everything you need. Garden is enchanted and has comfy beds/bags to lounge on and sleep off lunch on which listening to the hens chatting. Good wine list. Would definitely visit again.

Sad and disappointed, we have been coming to this beautiful pub for many years and always had a high standard of food and service. Having booked for 7.00 on a bank holiday Friday evening we arrived to a very luck warm welcome. At the bar only one bitter was available. On the menu the steak was sold out. Food itself was very average bordering on bland and expensive.

Lovely staff and interesting menu. Delicious food. Only complaint are the portion sizes. Fish and chips were a decent size however other things on the menu were quite small. For example the eggs, salmon and toast was sold as a main and cost £12.50 and consisted of one piece of bread, one egg and a few slices of smoked salmon. Similarly a gnocchi dish was £15 and there was maybe about 12 pieces of gnocchi. Had to eat again a couple hours later.

what a shocking experience we had Sat evening 15th Jan 2022 at the Horse guards Inn a local pub we tried for a double birthday celebration. Basically there were two issues we had on our table of four, we had three courses and on the main course two dishes came 5 minutes earlier than the other two causing the dishes to become too cold. we raised the issue with staff who said he would pass it through, which I presumed was to the chef or manager. nothing was really done at that point, the overall quality of the courses were very tasty but spoiled by main course delivery speed. when we came to pay the bill we noticed a bottle of £50 red wine was on our invoice, we had 1 bottle of white and a couple of pre dinner drinks so it was not ours, it was a clear error. This is the part that enraged and ruined our evening causing me to spend time writing the review The manager had a serious attitude problem when we raised the cold main course problem coupled with the invoice error. He refused to accept the complaint by saying that no one else had complained "quite irrelevant" really. He then seemed to imply we were only looking for a reduced bill, became rude, sarcastic and argumentative. We paid the full £212.65 bill. By not accepting two dishes be removed from the bill that he rudely offered we clearly demonstrated our intent. In summary the young manager i believe is called Ben has got some serious customer relation training required as he should never argue with customers when issues arise, it's commercial suicide for a business.

Sublime Friday night dinner for two a couple of weeks back. We arrived early and the table wasn't quite ready, so they took us out back to an outdoor table for a pre-prandial. It was a warm, Indian summer evening and we had just walked about an hour and a half to get there - so were grateful for a bit of air before settling down in the bustling main room. The garden (a verdant glade) has a mystic feeling. There's something of the forest oasis to it; it's a clearing surrounded by low-drooping branches and inside there's a scattering of various items of garden furniture. The worn metal-frame tables have been touched by the outdoors: bits of moss and lichen grow up the legs, but you sit in comfort on cushions, and there are blankets for colder weather. We sated our substantial thirst with some of the local beers on tap. I had a rather refreshing pilsner, but Grace, not being a stranger to a bit of taste in her tipple, went for a genuine Sussex English Pale Ale. Indoors, we were well-served by the attentive waiting team. They recommended the local goat dishes which we had twice - once with the starter chorizo number and again for the main course: a great mound of goat dhansak accompanied by an excellent parsnip bhaji. Grace had hake for main - well buttered but balanced. We paired all this with a recommended Sicilian red which was light enough such that it went well with our food choices. Pudding was an affogato for the lady and a chocolate terrine for the gentleman - both lovely I'm sure but we were by this point feeling quite full. Hearty 5-star recommendation for the Horse Guards Inn. We look forward to a return in years to come

A little while later I was visiting a friend in the area and we decided to give the 'quirky looking inn' a try. Utterly brilliant! Staff are wonderfully welcoming and friendly and the menu changes by the day according to what produce they have access to locally which is such a brilliant idea! The food was cooked to perfection and to be honest, the friendly nature of the place was such that we could have stayed the whole day! First visit for a couple of years having moved away from the area and not disappointed! The chef here doesn't seem to be aiming at the fine dining thing but something almost as difficult to achieve: perfectly executed, relatively simple recipes using first-class ingredients with some lovely original touches. We enjoyed a perfect light goats cheese souffle; an unctuous, chunky leek and potato soup like nothing I've previously experienced; Galician sirloin steak, properly seasoned with perfect accompaniments; a wonderfully rich chorizo and chick pea stew; all rounded off with some of the best home made ice cream we've ever had (and that includes In Italy). Coffee and home made fudge also superb! Wine list is relatively short but well balanced, thoughtful and reasonably priced. All this served in a wonderfully relaxed and characterful country pub with attentive, but friendly and informal staff. For what it aims to be it's pretty well perfect.

I've visited The Horse Guards Inn for lunch and dinner several times over the last few years. It's in a lovely quiet location and is a charming pub. However, the service on the last couple of occasions has been patchy and very slow at times, with one or two things forgotten and having to be chased (eg drinks and a side dish).I know from the booking process (which is somewhat painful) that it continues to be popular, but it's a shame that it no longer reaches the high standards of previous years based on my recent experience.
