The Horse and Jockey Inn in Powys

On arrival we were a little confused as it was getting dark and we initially thought the packed out pub (it was Easter Sunday evening) was the area you dined in, until a friendly local pointed us in the direction of the restaurant area. We had a lovely meal. The food was cooked to perfection (fish & chips and steak & ale pie). The young waitress was really lovely too.

We are from out of town staying at Black Hall Lodges near by. Stumbled across this place on google looking for places to eat and it was absolutely lovely. Portions were huge and delicious and the staff were friendly. Would definitely go back if we’re ever in the area again

We had a great family reunion here at lunchtime with tasty reasonably priced food in the restaurant which everyone enjoyed. Many of us went to the bar area afterwards for a drink and chat, this was also very pleasant. The staff were helpful and friendly. All went very well during the day, unfortunately three of us has booked to stay the night. The rooms were great, clean and comfortable, but they were above the bar and patio area and the noise from the patio area especially, was dreadful- drinkers shouting, swearing and kicking the patio furniture until midnight as well as loud music blaring out, I don’t know if this happens on a regular basis, but it prevented us from sleeping until very late at night! The breakfast in the morning was tasty and good quality.

Only had food here and it was good the garlic bread was amazing, the home made burger was abit strong tasking for my liking but still ok, drinks where very reasonably priced and staff where great

Great food and the Superior Room was very spacious if a tad cool when the heating wasn't on. It can get noisy on a Saturday night.

We had a Christmas meal with a large group of friends, and it was absolutely lovely. I can’t fault the food (everyone enjoyed what they had) and the service was friendly and efficient. Highly recommended! The only reason I have given a 4- rather than 5- rating is because of the really poor choice of vegan food. I nearly didn’t go because the only offering on the menu was arancini, which is what I would expect as a starter, not a main meal. A message to ask if other options could be offered resulted in a suggestion of nut loaf, which was much more acceptable, and turned out to be probably the best I have ever had, so I really don’t know why it wasn’t on the menu. I didn’t have a dessert because there didn’t appear to be a vegan option. It would be wonderful if the obviously excellent chef could offer more vegan/vegetarian food, because I would certainly be a regular visitor if there was better availability - which must be true of a lot of people. Without last night’s experience, I’d just look at the menu and go elsewhere, which would be a real shame.

Rapsquillion just had their Christmas meal at the Horse & Jockey, after a great carols session at the Greyhound in Llangunllo. I'm not one that takes pictures of my meals or tells the world where I've dined - but this was simply marvellous. Every dish served - and there were ten of us, vegan to carnivore - was delicious, perfectly cooked and presented beautifully. Our waitresses were charming and efficient. It couldn't be faulted - so THANK YOU, H & J! We'll be back!

Had an evening meal which was delightful that’s where it ends turned into complete carnage after that locals brawling barman completely out of his depth underage girl of 17 left to man bar scared for her life whilst they went for help to a girl that had said she’d had enough of being called out after working all day management no where to be seen such a shame other local pub said the pub has lost its good reputation through poor management

Exceptional meal, being in knighton on a family break, we are here as recommended by the owners of The Hayloft where we are staying... 10 of us are and all meals were different meals and all came tpiping hot and totally perfect... I myself can highly recommend the steak and ale pie.. definitely one of the best I've tasted.. Service was lovely, not rushed at all, but we'll cared for.. Would definitely recommend here for anyone who like hone cooked food and we Will definitely be coming back in the near future

We went here looking to eat as we haven't been for some time and thought we would give it ago, as an ex police officer believe me when I say, almost every single person, both punters and staff seemed to be on drugs. Needless to say we didn't stay for food. We ventured further afield.

We visited on a Saturday evening. It was lovely! Food was stunning. Beer was good and the atmosphere was lovely.

I came here randomly for work and found and met a community of brethren that I can't really explain. Go here, eat here! Ask for Gwylym. Gaze upwards to the forest x

The food, drinks, setting, staff and toilets (a rare find) were all excellent. I cannot recommend this place enough. The flagon cider and butty bach beer were fantastic. Would recommend the pie, bacon chop and halloumi burger.

The food in the restaurant area despite its outward appearance was great especially the beef pie however there it stopped. The room was very small and we needed a fan if you open the windows the loud noise from the courtyard will be a problem. The women on checkin at the bar was completely incompetent, not a great start. I wouldn’t rush back!

We stayed at the Horse and Jockey while walking Offa's Dyke Path. Busy, popular local pub - lively atmosphere. Very comfortable accommodation. Great dinner - venison curry was v good. Good breakfast and packed lunch.

Do not stay in this hotel if you want to sleep!! The noise from the pub downstairs is so loud it’s impossible to sleep - it’s well past midnight. The Horse and Jockey Inn should not be allowed to advertise as accommodation as it’s not possible to sleep.

Great staff, great food, good beers. Worth the trip, glad I found reviews for it before setting off.

Fab stay! Staff were great, tv fell off the wall the guy was with us within 10 minutes, came and checked us an hour later to offer some drinks, was give a bottle of wine and a pizza! Room was spacious! The dog loved it!...

We stayed here whilst walking Offa’s dyke for one night. The accommodation was ok, just average. Towels in the bathroom were quite small - they should invest in bath sheets! However the food was excellent, both evening meal and breakfast were very tasty!

Stayed with our walking group of 16 people and loved it. Rooms were very clean, staff friendly and helpful. Well organised so that our meals all came out together. Most delicious chips and pie! The only disappointment was the puddings.

We had a really good meal here. Confit duck from the specials board was possibly the largest duck leg I've ever. Plenty of good veg with it, good potatoes too and most importantly a lot of the redcurrant jus. Really very good. Efficient friendly service...

We stumbled upon this pub/restaurant during a visit to the area earlier this month and really enjoyed our meal there. Good range of choice on the menu, good quality of food and the staff were very hardworking and charming.

Popped in for lunch while on holiday. Dog friendly. Lovely food and people. We wanted to go back for Sunday lunch and was told that it’s on all day Sunday. So we revisited Sunday afternoon and they had ran out. No Sunday roast. Was divested. So had a drink and a snack and went to local shop for some food. I would go back again.

What a superb stay, me and a friend stayed for two nights while visiting the Rally school close by. Good food and beers in the snug, bar and restaurant. The super friendly and chatty staff that couldn’t do enough to help (Madie even carried out my stupid requests for a English breakfast in the shape of a face…the “hangry” expression soon disappeared! Pure artistic breakfast talent. Haha) will definitely be back. Just watch out if your looking for a quiet nights sleep, it’s lively with friendly locals till late.Grab a pint, Get chatting to the locals have a blast - the original social media is the pub.

We ate Sunday Lunch here just 2 days ago (26th September) and I have to say it was excellent. We've recently moved to the area and a friend who lives in Kinsham took us here for lunch. The service was first class, the food both well cooked and presented. Not to mention very generous portions. As a restauranteur myself (having owned 12 various establishments over the past 35 years) I do appreciate good food and service when I receive such. I can also be quite critical if such things are not of a good standard. Suffice it to say I would recommend this establishment to everyone. In fact we are returning there for Dinner this evening.

Atmospheric and historic. Cosy feel. Acoustics very nice for groups and anyone hard of hearing. Great you have rough walls and soft furnishings. Food too salty at times: one can always add salt. Sadly I had to leave food (Attenborough turns in his grave). Tagine dry... Needs a veggie sauce.Absolutely wonderful personal service.

Had 2 very nice meals whilst staying here. The sea bass was excellent and we also enjoyed the halloumi burger and the salmon. Also good choice of tasty desserts. Staff were friendly and accommodating and service was excellent. Very pleasant courtyard, although a bit noisy on a Saturday night.

Staying in Knighton with our dogs in tow. The pub is ideal as it has nice tables in the courtyard. Food was good and they adapted a dish for my partners dietary requirements. XXX ales was good.

Great to see post Covid that customers are welcome with open arms…. Unless you choose to go here! Greeted with “no food”, not a “unfortunately we are not serving food.” So we ask for 2 coffees to be told “I’m too busy do you want a pint?” Evidently elementary customer service has bypassed this lady. Disappointing really…. In fact we had better service and a great choice of food at the local Co-op instead. If stopping in Knighton I’m sure there are other places that will welcome your custom.

2 couples and our 2 dogs popped in here this week for some lunch. 2 had the hot steak baguette… wow! Simply delicious!! So much steak on it! Hubby had a meat pizza and he couldn’t even finish it! Soo nice! Really enjoyed and wished we lived closer! Highly recommend

I stayed saturday evening and i was completely appauled by the sequence of events that occured during the evening the manager that evening set apon a young guy who obviously had mental health issues and his second in command just stood by and laughed the locals had to separate the guy from the manager at one point the manager was biting the guys hand this was an awful experience which was brought on by the manager

Stopped with my wife to explore Knighton and came across this inn. Staff were friendly, food and drink very good and fairly priced and inn had character which topped off our experience here of Sunday lunch. When we are next in Knighton, this is where we will be heading for lunch. Absolute gem of a pub.

Stopped here for Sunday lunch on our way home from a weekend away. Booked ahead as it does get busy. We ate in the restaurant which was very clean, had nice private booths for eating. Staff were professional, polite and attentive. Food was perfect and fantastic value for money. No hesitation to recommend.

What a lovely place.We visited as a family on my wife's birthday and was so impressed we managed to go again later in the week.Lovely setting and staff anf and the food was delicious the second night we were so full there was no room for desert!Our daughter loved the Toad in the hole and there was good variety on the main and children's menu.The nachos to start was superb and the mains we had, steak, enchilada, pie and lasagne over the two visits were delicious.Well worth a visit!

Called in on Friday night, we were given a great welcome, we ordered the food I had the sizzling steak and my wife had the sizzling chicken. It was all well presented and to follow we had desert which was fantastic. We will certainly be back again when we're in the area.

Stayed here for one night & had dinner in the restaurant. Room was quite good...a little small and probably very warm during a summer heatwave. Bed was very comfortable. All expected ‘little extras’ were provided. A couple of suggestions - a mirror suitable for putting make up on and the bath plug certainly needed fixing!Dinner in the restaurant was very good. Maybe the table could have been a little cleaner but putting that aside, the menu had lots to choose from. We opted for the chicken & bacon enchilada and the sizzling chicken. Both dishes were well-cooked, hot and ‘huge’. We both enjoyed every single mouthful we had room for!We pre-ordered breakfast. A little suggestion here would be to add some form of pricing on the menu. There was no indication that each breakfast would be £6.50. Heh Ho, we should have asked. Both breakfasts were once again, well- cooked and there was plenty of it. Maybe a few more blueberries & strawberries on the porridge would be worth adding. Altogether, a really good stay and food. We would definitely recommend this pub.

We visited this pub twice while on holiday. First visit was just for drinks and a quick bite to eat. The nachos were delicious and the pork panini was great. We booked a table in the resteraunt which was lovely inside. The lasagne and enchiladas were fab and their is a great deal of choice. The staff and service were brilliant and would recommend this to go when visiting Knighton.

We visited on the 23rd June 2021 while staying at black hall Lodges. We had drinks and food which was delicious. Staff was very polite and very covid aware with track and trace etc. Would highly recommend 👌

The Horse & Jockey is a friendly pub which we tried for the first time today. The service was very good and the food was excellent. We would definitely go there again and recommend a visit.

Fantastic hospitality at this welcoming pub with rooms. We were cycling and stayed overnight and had our dinner in the restaurant. Food was excellent and the team were very attentive. The rooms were noisy until closing time, but then it was lovely and quiet.

Stayed one night whilst doing the Offas Dyke walk. Everything was great, the staff helpful and friendly, dinner was excellent ‘pub grub’ and very good value. Big shout out to the young lady who ran the breakfast, she was so helpful, friendly and efficient.

We joined one branch of the family for lunch last Thursday just before the circuit breaker kicked in. It’s a fine old pub, holding firm to old pub values with a modern twist.The landlady and her team were most welcoming. The outstanding meal was traditional fish and chips with mushy peas, fat crisp chips and really fresh fish. Unbeatable and accompanied ( for the boys ) with Wye Valley Butty Bach from over the border in Herefordshire. There is also a very good choice on the children’s menu.The history bit is that Knighton is in Radnorshire which was in England until put into the new creation of Powys in 1973 without being consulted. The local accent is not Welsh but the same as Herefordshire and there is a strong sense of local identity so don’t ask the locals if they are Welsh !!

We stayed in Knighton whilst walking the Offa's Dyke Path through Celtic Trails. The Horse and Jockey was a great find. It has a large bar area with eating available but the separate restaurant is a good size and comfortable and food choice and quality very good indeed. Service was personal and friendly. Good value too. Thoroughly recommended.

We didn’t plan this visit but we are so glad that we chose to lunch here. The staff were polite , helpful and very safety conscious. The food was excellent. Highly recommended. We will return.

We visited the Horse and Jockey Knighton for lunch today with family. The service was excellent and the food was superb and very reasonably priced. Two of us had king prawns for starters and hubby had whitebait....all superb. We had pizza, baked enchilada , lasagne and blade of beef for mains....all excellent. Too full for desserts! Will definitely return when in the area again!

We were staying near Knigton recently and popped in for lunch. We managed to get a seat outside in the sunshine, lovely atmosphere staff were friendly and helpful! Food was gorgeous and generous portions, what a gem! Won't hesitate to return if in the area again, highly recommend!

We choose the Horse and Jockey as they are taking part in the”Eat out to help out” scheme and wow what a find. It’s a lovely old building but well decorated inside. We sat outside as the restaurant was fully booked. Maddy served us and she is an amazing asset to this business. She told us what wasn’t available (only one main and one dessert) we ordered the spicy parsnip soup, garlic mushrooms and fish cake for starters and all of them were amazing. For mains we had 2 roast lamb dinners( thanks to Maddy checking we got the last 2!) and I had the sizzling steak, all of the food was fabulous and I think we all agreed that it was one of the best meals we had eaten out for a very very long time. We did skip desserts but are planning to go again tonight ! We would happily have paid full price for this meal as it was so good. There was also a lovely lady In the bar who was also great and when I asked if we could speak to a manager to say how great it was we were told there wasn’t one in (Maddy is assistant restaurant manager) and to me this speaks volumes for how good the staff are that they can run the business without being micro managed! If you are ever in the area of Kington you have to try this place .Ld

Just staying in Knighton we booked an evening meal. We had to sit outside (but this was not a problem) as the pub is just in Wales and was banned from eating inside with the Covid rules. The staff were very obliging and explained all the new rules and then the food came. Absolutely delicious, the sizzling chicken definately sizzled! We would certainly visit here if in the area again. Lucky locals to live nearby!

Called in on Sunday evening. Fancied a roast dinner. Was told they’d stopped serving Sunday lunch but they might be able to manage it. We had roast lamb, roast potatoes, parsnip and Yorkshire pudding. I thought that was it, then along came a bowl of freshly cooked vegetables and one of cauliflower cheese and extra gravy. Amazing and SO delicious. Sticky toffee pudding was wonderful too!

My Partner and myself went for Lunch today. I was originally going to have Roast Beef, however my partner decided to go for the Cod, Chips and Peas. I decided to have it too and it was absolutely delicious. Bar Staff were very pleasant too. Highly recommend the Horse & Jockey.

We had lunch in the restaurant the first day it opened post pandemic. The staff were amazing changing gloves every time they served us. Tables well spread out and we felt very safe in the environment. Food was fabulous and delicious. They had also signed up to the government support scheme, so we had a lovely surprise when we came to pay the bill!

Despite being limited to serving outside due to Covid 19 restrictions, the seating area was welcoming and undercover. Access to outside toilets also made things easier. The food was amazing and the service friendly and efficient. Only complaint was the family who let their three children run around the eating area squealing without reproach, but that isn't the pub's fault.

My partner and myself both chose off the Specials Board with my partner having the Monkfish Tails and myself choosing the BBQ Pulled Pork Burger. They both came with Fries & salad and tasted absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend.

We were stranded on our way home and the Horse and Jockey Inn were absolutely magnificent, arranged accommodation and were prepared to be flexible if we needed to stay the following day. We all enjoyed the lunch and breakfast the following day was exactly what was needed before setting off home.

Proper home cooked food and a varied menu, struggled to choose as everything just sounded so good! I had chicken & bacon enchiladas, we also had between us garlic bread, soup, fish & chips, steak pie, everything was just to die for! Came here as we were staying in Black Hall Lodges And fancied a pub meal somewhere close. We went in a Friday night and sat in a lovely table be the fireplace . The menu was fab and I struggled to choose. The staff were genuinely friendly and were really helpful. Food was delicious and we got served quickly . My partner and I came back on the Sunday for a roast and had exactly the same experience. The staff are a credit to the owners . We come from Brighton and there are hundreds of pubs and bars etc but can honestly say this pub is spot on menu and service wise . Exactly what we needed. . Would definitely come back here .

United KingdomAfter a 6 day walk down offa's dyke from Prestatyn, the Horse and Jockey was a lovely place to spend the night prior to heading home on the train, the following morning.Initially I thought the room price of 70 quid, quite steep. However they had provided me with a family room. The main bed was huge and very comfortable. Th heating had been out on high for my arrival, which was a beautiful feeling afer walking in Wales mid winter. The bath ran quickly and provided me with more than enough hot water in which to soothe my aching legs. The bar is divided into two. A main bar plus a snug. The snug is rather nice. I didn't visit the main bar. The selection of beers was excellent.Breakfast was very pleasing, cooked to perfection in the restaurant, which is the third 'public area' in the premises. Staff were friendly. The location is at the bottom of the main street in town, about a 3 minute walk from the railway station.I was very happy to have stayed there and would do so again

After a 6 day walk down offa's dyke from Prestatyn, the Horse and Jockey was a lovely place to spend the night prior to heading home on the train, the following morning.

Excellent food , service and accommodation with our dog. Stayed for 3 nights between Christmas and new year. To visit family who live locally. Lovely walks locally. Fantastic time
