The food here is exceptional. So much so, that we booked another table 2 night’s later whilst on holiday in the area. The surroundings are cosy and ambient and the food is excellent quality. We had mains of steak and lamb and both were cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend! 🥰

One of the best pubs in the Lake District! As you come off the A66 you really feel like you are entering the late district yet conveniently very close to Penrith. It has a fantastic atmosphere of a country pub with the fire almost always going, it has certainly provided great respite in the winter months when I might have been less prepared for the cold weather. Just visited again more recently in March and the food was delicious. I have the venison burger off the specials board (although a lamb shank is always tempting) and fortunately we opted to share a treacle tart for dessert that's the portion was humongous! The staff are always super friendly and I would recommend to anyone as a fantastic pub to stop in at. It isn't the biggest of pubs so if you do want to eat I would recommend ringing ahead and booking a table.

The reviews were right! This is a gem of a place. You can eat in the bar (not bookable) or the restaurant. Dogs allowed in the bar area 😀 We had two courses. The selection was great so hard to choose esp the dessert menu - sticky toffee pudding, cheesecake, chocolate torte 😋 Good wine selection. Staff were great too. We only go to the Lakes once a year but will be back to the Horse and Farrier!

We had a great experience here. The gluten free options for my partner were varied and delicious. Everything felt that little bit special, even down the most delicious side salad I’ve ever had! The service was excellent and when an item was forgotten from our mains it was quickly rectified and then deducted from the bill which was going above and beyond. The staff really looked after us in what is a small and wonderfully cosy pub. We hope we can return the next time we are here.

We stopped in the pub one afternoon for a drink on a walk and so booked a table for the evening. The Horse & Farrier is worth visiting as a pub but it is also very popular for lunch and dinner. The menu is fresh and enticing. We shared a great dish of whitebait and then both indulged in the game pie which came with fresh veg and potato. The beer we drank to accompany the dinner was well kept and well poured. We would definitely go again if we were in the area.

Surprised by the raving reviews as we found the food very mediocre for lake District food although reasonably priced. I had a steak which was very chewy and sinewy but my husband's dish was to his liking with a bit of salt and pepper. The biggest pet peeve is that they claim to 'love dogs' and it felt very much like they knew they wouldn't get as much business if they didn't allow dogs in and they really would prefer you didn't bring your dog as there is a long list of demands regarding your dog (which isn't present on every table or notified before you/when you sit down. Hence our next interaction...)they include, only well behaved dogs allowed, noisy dogs will be asked to sit outside or to be left in the car, and to not allow dogs on the furniture. We brought our under 4kg puppy with us which I had on my knee. I was asked to put it on the floor as 'we have had dogs vomit on our cushions and it's our furniture' fair enough. However you either have dogs in or you don't and she wasn't in the furniture as she was on a blanket on my knee laid down, we didn't see the list till after this comment. We always have a blanket for our dog and she's very well behaved but she does prefer to sit not on the floor due to her size (she gets a bit anxious about other dogs/feet coming towards her while she's under a table. General unfriendliness from the staff, almost dismissive the whole time we were there, maybe because we had a dog or that's their general attitude. Very odd atmosphere. Such a shame as we stay nearby many times in the year and would be nice to have another place to come and eat. Won't be visiting again as there is many other places that are more friendly and with better food in nearby pooley bridge. The only plus would I liked the decor, very on trend with farmy accents like Hessian bags for cushions etc...

We had read the reviews and we looked forward to our visit for Sunday lunch. The duck in wrappers with Hoisin sauce was excellent. My husband and daughter had roast beef and roast lamb respectively which were both excellent and the vegetables including the roast potatoes were well cooked. I chose the roast belly of pork which unfortunately had not been cooked long enough to render the pork fat. It was nauseating and I left most of my meal. When I complained to the waitress I was told belly of pork is always fatty which as an experienced cook I was already well aware. There were no words of apology either at the meal table nor when the bill was paid. A follow up e-mail to the pub received no réponse. Very disappointing.

Staff were friendly and welcoming enough and accomodated a slightly late arrival. Food was definitely disappointing given the reviews. I personally had the Sirloin Steak (Spedcial) ordered Medium and it came very well done to the point where it was difficult to chew. I left 90% of the steak on the plate and neither the waitress who took away the plate or the bartender that processed our bill asked us how things were. I'm not one to confrontationally bring up complaints (but will say them if asked), so I left being quite dissatisfied considering the price paid. The person I was with was also diappointed with their fish main. I wouldn't come back as nice (as the pub is visually).

DACRE - They shouldn’t advertise as dog friendly, as we experienced actual distain for ours on arrival. The list of rules for dogs on the five tables you’re allowed to sit at, dressed as ‘doggie disclaimers’, isn’t as cute as they intend. (including - ‘a barking dog would be asked to be put in the car’ - which are all precariously parked along the skinny road outside by the way) We put a large blanket over the hessian sacks being used as seat cushions for our dog, and we’re told to put the 3kg puppy on the floor. No real common sense, basic hospitality or courtesy used. Coupled with, what can only be described as, a frosty level of customer service, which we also observed other 2 other sets of customers receiving (but they all cleverly left before making any orders, rather than accepting it like we did) it feels like such a waste. Nice building and ok food, (we had fish and chips) but the service really, really lets the place down and counteracts any redeeming qualities. We anticipate a frosty reply but would never return. There are a wide selection of other venues close by that we would recommend instead.

My friend and I visited this pub for her birthday. What a great little pub it is. As it was near Christmas and a really cold evening, we ordered a mulled wine on arrival which proved both warming and well spiced. For our meals, my friend chose the steak and I had the home made turkey and stuffing pie. Both meals were excellent....the mixed veg that accompanied my meal was outstanding...proper fresh winter veg (sprouts, carrots, sugar snap peas, parsnips and cabbage) not your run of the mill supermarket bought frozen fair. The hearty portions meant we declined the desert menu but a second mull wine went down very nicely. A great way to celebrate a birthday due to great value for money, very pleasant staff and tasty food.👍
