We received a friendly welcome from the barmaid/waitress at this charming village pub, recently upgraded under new ownership (also own Noah's Ark); it strikes the right balance between pub and restaurant. Farrow and Ball type decor with old pine tables, pictures and succulents in small vases. An attractive, tempting menu delivered tasty enjoyable plates of food and the peppercorn sauce which accompanied the chicken Milanaise (in panko crumbs) was the best sauce I have ever had. Well done, Chef! The black bean, chorizo and jalapeno croquettes' first course was a large portion and for my taste should have been spicier as they lacked any punch. Also a fresh salsa might have been better than mayonnaise to accompany the rich croquettes. However, it was a good starter for a hungry walker. Crispy shredded beef salad was well presented, attractive and tasty. Good selection of wines and beers, and draught cider excellent. Nice, relaxed atmosphere with daily newspapers to read and there are several areas in which to sit. There are various deals on different days ie Tues: pie and pint £14 and one Weds a month: 2 course lunch with 125cl glass wine £15. We shall certainly go again; next time I'd love to see a couple of more slimming options on the menu which doesn't include any deep fat frying. Do pop into the well-stocked Lodsworth Larder, the village shop run by volunteers next door too and have a walk at nearby Black Down.

I walk into a pub and see Skinner's Betty Stoggs, Tim Taylor's Landlord, St Austell Tribute, Dark Star Hophead and local Langham's beers on tap and just wonder what I'm going to do with my car!

The Elsted Inn

03/09/2018: First visit to this country pub for dinner. Very friendly landlord and landlady. Small menu choice but enough to give a reasonable selection. Ordered mackerel pate and rib eye steak. Both good wholesome pub grub. Reasonable wine selection and free Wi-fi. Only minor downside was not enough toast with the mackerel. Also not much parking and had to leave on the verge of the road. Will go back again sometime.
28/08/2018: Based on reviews we picked the Elsted Inn as a ‘halfway house’ to meet some old friends from Hampshire. Perhaps we were unlucky, but none of us felt particularly satisfied after our visit.

Gartons Coffee House

28/08/2018: We stopped whilst cycling for a great lunch. The food was good and was served quickly and politely. This is a great place to stop just off the main street. The setting is great in a old square and therefore great to sit outside
10/09/2018: Friendly staff and a good breakfast menu. We sat outside and enjoyed the weather, though be aware that the table are on a slope so you need to be careful with drinks. Very good food, reasonably priced. Park in the Grange carpark and walk through the pretty town centre.
