The Hawkley Inn in East Hampshire

We had mixed views on The Hawkley Inn. It’s a lovely place, and in a perfect spot for setting out on a circular walk. However, there’s an older lady who works behind the bar (not the owner) who probably isn’t best suited to the service sector. It’s also worth keeping an eye on your pint when it’s poured as they try to drain every drop of the barrel!

Just had the most wonderful Sunday lunch at the Hawkley Inn. Received a great welcome, followed by attentive service in a lovely atmosphere. The roast beef was top class and my partner’s chicken and leek pie was also a treat. The gravy was amazing and the puddings were lovely and served in sensible bowls/dishes. We will certainly be revisiting and highly recommending to friends and family.

We had booked The Hawley Inn as a mid way point for a dog walk and Sunday lunch. The pub very kindly returned my email with some suggested walking routes but sadly we didn't take any of these instead using the gorgeous cricket ground located in the village. The pub was nicely busy and the food was very good. We noticed out table had another booking on it less than 2 hours after our slot but this dint happen. Really worth a visit as the staff friendly and the menu had a great selection in additon to the normal Sunday roast offering.

Nice English pub with great food, my only negative would be that service was a bit stretched and we found it hard to attract their attention because of it

Stayed 3 nights and didn’t want to leave. Superb food. Staff lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. Our dog loved it too. Great to experience the relaxed atmosphere sitting next to the fire. Great beer and wine choices. Will definitely be returning.

Stopped by for lunch with friends. A truly rural pup which we thought was great. The welcome and service was very good. Prices were a tad above average but the food was miles above average. We thought it was good value and the visit was a great experience.

Great Sunday lunch after a brisk cold walk - much needed. Plenty of meat & my lamb was thickly sliced. Crispy potatoes & a good selection of fresh vegetables. Lovely country pub with good vibes. We set as a large group on long bench like seating which was sadly uncomfortable even with cushions. Give the pub a go if you are in the area.

The usual warm welcome at The Hawkley last Saturday. We, a family of four popped in for a drink after a walk before going home for lunch. Best reported by dialogue: Me: “hello”. Bar staff: “If you want food we’re fully booked”. I bought drinks: “is there somewhere to sit to have our drinks?”. “No, we’re full” (it was early, there were four people sitting down). “Can we sit at the bar?”. “If you like”. After 5 minutes I asked for a menu “we’re fully booked”. “No, you said that, I just wanted to read it, so I know what to expect when I book”. “Alright”. I read it and said “nice menu”. “We change it every day”. “All of it?”. “No”. I saw sandwiches on the menu: “if we order sandwiches, do we need a table or can we eat them at the bar?”. You guessed it: “we’re fully booked”. “That’s not what I asked “. “The bar, if the kitchen’s not busy”. And so on. Not a smile, or welcome, or a suggestion that we book, pre-order, or suggest that if we were prepared to wait, we might get a sandwich. It’s popular, but it must be the food.

I met a colleague for lunch midweek. What a lovely dining experience. Amazing menu, lovely beer and great staff. Looking forward to coming back again. My location rating may be a bit low, as I don't know the area and didn't see anything outstanding about the immediate area. That said, there were several walkers in the pub, so there may be great walks nearby?

Pubs wax and wane over the years. This one has kept a good standard for a long time. Eight of us had a meal last night…Excellent! Great service too from all staff. Love the older chap with a great, dry sense of humour.

Called in for a quick drink but ended up staying for a roast, so glad we did excellent service, friendliest staff and the best roasted we’ve had out. Good value for money definitely worth a visit.

Great lunch, we arrived just before 12 and they had just opened. Had drinks and lunch in the garden. All tables inside were already booked, it was Saturday. I had mushroom risotto and my partner had the cauliflower biryani. Both excellent.

Came here today for the first time. The Sunday Lunch was very good indeed - good portions - meat good quality, good roast potatoes and gravy. Landlord very good and attentive staff. The only downside which stopped me giving it a 5/5 was the unexpected obligatory service charge which is added to everything - we always give a tip unless service or food are bad but I prefer to give what I want rather than be told what to pay.

Have known of this gem since the early 1980s and have visited the place ever since. Never been disappointed. Excellent meal, brilliant service even though it was busy this week due to Goodwood Festival of Speed. If I lived closer I'd go there more often.

The food was good although slightly overpriced , but the 10% service charge on everything including drinks was a surprise and an unwelcome one, especially as we ordered the the drinks at the bar and carried them to our table ourselves!

Put simply, the best place in the whole of Hampshire! I love it here: I've now been often and I've never been disappointed. The food is truly exceptional, restaurant quality. And a good selection of beer and wine also. But, above all else, it's the understated but warm welcome, the friendliness, and the easy relaxed environment. For all these reasons you should book!

Pub looks stunning, didn't get a chance to go in as we were accosted by an unsupervised terrier almost immediately, wouldn't mind normally as we are dog people but it was openly aggressive towards our own puppers with no sign of the owner.

Quality pub by the Hangers Way walking route, in stunning surroundings. Family run so hands on and big smiles. Even other guests were welcoming and happy! We had dinner at the Hawkley Inn at the end of a long walk in the South Downs National Park and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of this great country pub. Despite the current, challenging circumstances, they have a refined menu and have reorganised the internal space for indoor dining in a safe and functional way without affecting the overall character of the place. Food was superb. We ordered beef bourguignon and sirloin steak with french fries - they were both delicious and perfectly cooked. Staff, in particular Mark and Abbey, were super friendly and very welcoming. They are also much involved with their local community. We will definitely visit this great place again.

Had the pleasure of lunch at the Hawkley yesterday (Sorry Boris ) with good friends and as always found the food and service to be delightfu.l I have always sung the praises of the Hawkley's Steak and Kidney pie and again loved every mouthfull.I do wonder if the "Armature" (sic) reviewer of recent times was perhaps angling for an unwarranted refund?. We visited on Sunday 23 February for a birthday lunch for my wife; a party of 6 adults and three children all under five plus a dog meaning we eat in the bar area. We had a large table and, despite the size of our party and the fact that the whole place was full, excellent service with a smile throughout. The Sunday lunch - the beef - was excellent and unlike some venues, was tender, well cooked and plenty of it. The vegetables were clearly freshly cooked, steaming hot and again, generous portions were served. My party agreed that this is a gem of a place and worth its five stars on this review.

My wife and I went here with two friends for lunch, it is advisable to book as the place was very busy. The whole experience was excellent, the service, the food, the wine all of a very high standard.This place is a pub and the bar sits at the centre with the restaurant seating around said bar. The seating is well spaced so that other diners conversations are not intrusive.We all chose different dishes, all of which were plated beautifully, served properly and best of all excellent quality.There was nothing to dislike

Visited early March for a catch up lunch with another couple as the inn is halfway between our two locations. The staff were friendly and helpful regarding menu choices. We didn't have starters but our party had the pheasant, the fresh plaice, and the beef bourguignon. All the dishes were delicious. We also had desserts and the pecan pie is to die for! The men in the party worked their way through halves of the different beers and were very pleased with the selection on offer. The inn was welcoming with an open fire. Although it got a little busier towarss the end of our visit we were not rushed at all. We would definately visit again and go some distance out of our way to make sure we can.

Armature service that unless you ask, re-ask & remind you will go without; I don't think I have ever eaten anywhere that serves shell-on prawns or crevettes that doesn't automatically bring a finger bowl or an ample supply of wipes or napkins and somewhere to dump the debris. It should not be necessary to ask for new cutlery nor serviettes if the waiting staff have just taken same from the table after starters but when you ask three times and still don't get what you need it gets very frustrating and one tends to give up.Very average food with overdone pie crust (never mind, smother it in gravy - they'll never notice) to very limp vegetables that were clearly not cooked to order.Having said that the beer is always good and for midweek, the pub was busy, maybe I’m just unlucky? As the title of this review suggests "So very disappointing, managed to be worse than last time", maybe by the next visit the beer will be as bad as the food & service?

It was dark and we forgot our sat nav so the Hawkley took a bit of a drive around to find, but we did and we enjoyed hearty food (good sized portions too) and in a very pleasant pub with nicely rustic decor and scrubbed-smooth tables. For lovers of Fawlty Towers out there, the moose head on the wall was a bonus point of humour, but this Inn needs no gimmicks. Nice.

We stumbled across this pub by accident, and we were pleasantly surprised. The one we intended to go to was shut for refurbishment, so we clicked on the first pub we saw on trip advisor. Upon arrival the staff were friendly and welcoming, they arranged a last minute table and showed us to our seats. The pub was cosy and homely. The food was home cooked food and was delicious, I went for duck (which I never have) and it was so tender and fell off the bone. My partner had the burger which was also delicious. We will definitely be returning!

This is one of my favourite pubs nestling in the beautiful village of Hawkley surrounded by the wooded South Downs - it's welcoming, friendly, unpretentious and offers delicious food and well kept real ales from local breweries. It's a great base for a range of interesting walks and offers overnight accommodation too. If walking, please note food times.

Returned to the inn with a group of 10 of us for the first time since a disappointing experience a little while ago now. We were in the same room as last time and were told, as we ordered, that we were behind a party of 17! Given the long wait times for food on our last visit I was not optimistic for the evening. Thank goodness Chloe and her colleagues looked after us so well. Starters arrived quickly and were excellent particularly the warm duck egg and chorizo salad. Mains were great too. Special mention for the pheasant and bacon pie and the whole bream. And we finished with some lovely desserts including Cranachan, afogato and a delicious plum and pear tart. We had a great evening and lovely food. See you again soon!

We can not recommend and thank The Hawkley Inn enough for hosting our party of 17 guests for dinner. We also took most of their rooms for the night. Food, drink, accommodation and hospitality exceeded expectations.

Seven cyclists arrive to warm welcome after 25 very hilly local miles in the saddle. Outstanding menu, ale, service and food. I think the wine's excellent too but didn't try it on this occasion.

I have never been to this pub before but I absolutely loved it. As we are nearing Christmas there were some lovely charity crackers on our table, which was good fun. It is a traditional pub and I focused on the burger, which was amazingly delicious. Our lunch companions opted for the calves liver. A little slow service on beer orders and one of the waitresses could have been a bit happier in her disposition but overall a great little place that was very popular with families during a lunchtime visit. :)

We’ve been twice now and enjoyed every minute. Service is great and food is excellent thank you. We went there on a Monday first time and it was a steak night which we were unaware of but it’s the best steak I’ve had in a long time. We then took my sister and husband for an evening meal and the menu was delicious.

I like the atmosphere, the friendliness of the staff and it is not too far to drive in a wet and windy night. Been many times before but last week was the best yet.
