The Happy Man in Runnymede

Came in yesterday for a Sunday Roast which was outstanding as always. This is a real proper pub with a good selection of ales & they even had the rugby on! Long may they continue to flourish, as they surely deserve to. We are looking forward to next week already!

This is my local pub - I visit several times a week. There are always 3 - 4 real ales which are very well kept, plus quality food at reasonable prices - all served by friendly and helpful bar staff.

I called up this pub to complain about a meal I had previous to that day . (Which can I add was horrific ) the manager then what I can only assume was a threat “well where are you now ?” Which made me feel intimidated. So not only do me and my husband feel I’ll . Annoyed and threatened . Will not be returning and won’t be returning! 😤

Emily at this pub, organised a Christmas day Lunch for the elderly in the community nearby. 'Out of the Blue', we (As her daughter and son in law) received an invitation on hn her behalf. She is 99 and would not travel up to us in Worcestershire, despite us wanting to collet and return her. Big 'Thumbs Up' for Emily and the pub for what they did. How wonderful to know there are people like Emily around. I would suggest people support this pub as they have acted 'Above & Beynd' what others have done Merry Christmas to Emily and have a Wonderful New Year.

i visit this pub in a regular and refuse to go anyway else! the food is amazing and the prices are even better along with real ale that changes every time i visit the pub. the staff are amazing and the pub is so well managed!

I visited this pub with some colleagues for a work lunch. Due to my severe Nut allergy we rang the pub before and asked if it would be ok for me to bring my own lunch. I was told this wouldn’t be an issue and they were happy to accommodate. On the day however it was a different story. Everyone in my party ordered their lunch and I began to eat the food I had brought with me. Within minutes I was then rudely approached by a member of staff and told they weren’t happy with me eating my own food. When I explained we had already rung before and told it wouldn’t be an issue the staff member said that others would want to bring food if they saw me eating mine and I should have eaten before I attended. This is outrageous behaviour and I shouldn’t be made to feel excluded because I have an allergy. I wouldn’t have eaten my own food had I not of got the ok beforehand. I was really embarrassed and felt excluded from the group I was with. I hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else and that the pub can be more accommodating going forward.

I visited here today with a group of friends for lunch. Lovely food, served piping hot, beautifully presented and in fantastic time. The bar staff were very attentive and polite. The landlady and landlord couldn't do more for us and were accommodating to all food requirements and requests. Thank you for a wonderful experience, we will be back again!

Came here with some friends for a brunch. The food was amazing, everyone was happy including fussy vegetarians. I would definitely come back, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff.

Booked for a group of fiends to eat there (plus the 3 wee doggies too - it's a dog friendly place). Lovely staff, I mean doubly nice. Great eye contact, attention to detail and couldn't have been more helpful. Onto the ales - those that had them said they were just right and I don't doubt their opinion. Food - Oooh it was very nice indeed. We had a variation of meals between the 10 of us. There were burgers of various types, all came with chips and some salad and were wolfed down without complaint. One of us had a steak and they appeared delighted with that. Then there was us scampi, chips and mushy pea-types. It was delicious. Everything piping hot from the kitchen to our table. Very nice and a big thank you to the team on duty at the Happy Man when we visited. You're one of the smallest great pubs I've ever visited and your food and hospitality are really rather lovely.

Lovely pub great food. Grateful that they were able to turn the speaker off where we were sitting. Wasn't expecting to be listening to System of a Down on Saturday night. Hence the reason to cut short the evening. Pity

Fantastic local pub with a great selection of ales, good food (esp Sunday roast), and beer festivals!

This is a great little pub. A few friends and me use it as a central meeting point a few times a year and it is convenient from those in Surrey and London. Good choice of guest ales and decent food. If you are used to London prices this place is a steal - it’s easy to have one or two more! We met up for the beer festival last weekend, good selection of beers and ciders in the garden. Staff are able to walk you through the selection. Heaters over most benches and a curry was rolled out about 9pm. Indoors is a great atmosphere in the evening with the music playing some form of classic rock with a bit of cheese thrown in. Ubers are plenty even late in the evening. All in all, a great old fashioned boozer in a world which is turning into gastro pubs and wine bars. If you like ale and good music then you can’t really go wrong.

Read the reviews and made the effort to walk the 20 minutes from the centre of Egham and I was glad I did. Small but perfectly formed a good mix of locals from students to those with a few more years under their belts. All made very welcome by the super bar staff. As was this solo traveller. Food was good pub fair well prepared and keenly priced. Add to that a selection of real ales and I'm only sorry it isn't my local.

I usually go to Happy man once a week for lunch! That was the first time that the food was discussing! The French fries were cooked again and again and then served! The burger was over cooked! When I asked if the fries are cooked for 2nd time the chef said no and offered to cook another portion and said to see how it goes! It can not go wrong!!! It’s French fries! For sure this was the last time I went to that pub! I fell really sorry for the owner to allow this situation! Hope in the future he realizes that he needs to get a proper chef!

When my wife and I go out for a nice Sunday lunch , first choice is always the Happy Man . Why ,well it's not messed around by all these commercial people , they have put the fun back into the social of friends and strangers coming together for the first time . Great sounds from the modern duke box all create a fab and casual, relaxed, unpretentious experience in this great little piece of British culture. ;-]

In Egham for a conference at Royal Holloway, this is a very friendly, easygoing pub. They got ya real ale here, so stop in for a pint. I didn't try the food, but it looks good from my observation.

Cosy pub with garden that always has four real ales on - Summer Lightning + three guests (that change regularly), so good for the real ale lover. Good food as well (recommend burger) and friendly staff.

I discovered this excellent pub when my daughter, a student at Royal Holloway, moved into a house just 50 yards away in Harvest Road. The reward of great, well kept real ale and 'home cooked' traditional food made the trip over to see Isabella even more attractive. Now a year on from her graduating and moving to London, I don't have as many opportunities to visit. I booked a table for 6 for Mothers Day; myself, my wife, her brother, their mother and our twin daughters. As always, the service, food and drink were of the highest standard and we had a wonderful time. By far the best Sunday roast you can get and our vegetarian daughters raved about the veggie cheese wellington they chose. I'd love to live within walking distance; if I did, it would be a safe bet to try The Happy Man first if you ever wanted to find me.

Used to frequent this pub when we were students at Royal Holloway. Came back here for a nostalgic trip to revisit our youth and it looks exactly the same as it did in 1991. Same seats, same tables, same upholstery, same décor. Not sure it's been painted in all that time, either. Beer was fine, nothing special on, I had a Summer Lightening, tasted good enough to get a second one. Didn't try the food but it used to be amazing so I hope that's still the same, too. Does look a bit dated and the seating was never particularly comfortable, so I'm glad it's not my local anymore. But it's not a bad little pub.

This place is fantastic! The garlic and chilli king prawns is a must and the lamb is to die for. Service is quick and all the staff are so friendly. If you are looking for a place with great ambiance and delicious, comforting food this is the place to go!

Going to the Happy Man has always been a seminal experience but it is not particularly a pub for your wife or girlfriend. In no way is this sexist it is simply that the Pub is renowned for its excellent beer four of which, on average, are new each week. It's a classic 'straight after work' blokes pub but can turn out some decent pub grub and reasonable accompanying wine, spirits etc. If your wife or girlfriend is in the right mood a good night can be had by all but it is not a poncy pub trying to be a restaurant - there are plenty of those around serving mediocre fare and charging gastronomic prices.

One of the Great British pubs, The Happy Man is a true legend. CAMRA members welcome and an excellent selection of beers and ales. Look out for the autumn beer festival at The Happy Man from Thursday 4th October to Sunday 7th October. Believe there is a Barbie as well.

Hasn't changed! A true English village pub! Outstanding service! They are not trying to fake the pub atmosphere. Feels like home.

After a long day out in the sunshine it was great to get a call from my daughter asking me to take her out for a drink. She suggested her ‘local’, the Happy Man in Englefield Green. As a student at Royal Holloway, University of London (which is within a few hundred yards) I was sure her recommendation would be good, and I was right. The pub is in a quiet residential area and caters for the locals and local students. As it was a Sunday the menu was mainly roasts but I was tempted by the calamari and chips and boy was it good. Decent portions of both, served piping hot and it tasted excellent. The choice of drinks was quite wide and the bar staff were very friendly. Sadly my daughter is about to finish at Royal Holloway so it’s unlikely I will get a chance to go back but as she wants to do her Masters degree next year at Royal Holloway I’ll make sure I return to the Happy Man as it’s a great pub.

You never know how long a pick up trip to Heathrow will take, so we left earlier to allow time for lunch. Food very good ( I had the Cumberland sausage and mash) and at very good prices and plenty of it - limited menu but would suit most tastes. 4 real ales on hand pumps, tried 2 and of a very good standard. Staff very friendly as well. This is what a pub should be like and not turned into some sort of gastro restaurant with matching prices! We will certainly be making a detour to this pub.

Staid in the campus but wanted to find a local pub close by. The Happy man is a 4min walk from campus and is a very down to earth typical local friendly English pub. Serving good pub grub food like bangers and mash, fish and chips, duck and others at decent prices plus a range of beer on drafts. Including a czech one and Guinness. They got a dartboard as well as a jukebox.

I became a student at RHC nearly 50 years ago (I still find this hard to believe) and this was very much a sentimental journey. The college has seen huge changes but I was delighted to find that The Happy Man is still an unspoilt local pub, unlike several others in Egham which have either disappeared or become trendy restaurants. I arrived at midday and was immediately made to feel very welcome. The barman was interested to learn the reason for my visit, the beer was better than I remember it (I think the pub was a Courage house last time I was there), the choice of food was good, the quality was excellent, the atmosphere was lively but not too noisy and the whole experience was highly agreeable. The pub is deservedly popular - I'm so glad it hasn't changed. I hope to return, maybe for a reunion with other former students, before too long.

This is nothing fancy but that is part of the appeal. A local pub as it should be laid back crowd and ticked away enough in the village that you do not get a huge crowd.

This pub seems to have become more popular with first years at the University and those in George Eliot Halls. I don't appreciate hearing loud chanting/screaming/laughing every Friday and weekend when myself and other housemates are trying to work, and with families nearby. Considering this is a residential area people should be encouraged to leave by 10pm.

This is my favourite Pub since I came at Royal Holloway Uni. Me and my friends spend a lot of time here chilling and drinking. The atmosphere is very characteristic and the staff is lovely.

I regularly visit this pub even though I live over 30 minutes from it and, being retired, no longer pass it on my way back from Heathrow. Why? Good food at a reasonable price, good beer always very well kept and varying and friendly staff (or should I say Stef)

I arrived at the Happy Man to be greeted with a smile and a very friendly hello. I had to apologise to the staff as my companions have a number of different limbs missing. Together we numbered almost 3 and a quarter people. The apology was for the rudness of 'One Armed Mike' he has a real chips on his shoulder since the wood chipper accident. I would not mind but that was 4 years ago. The food was great and the service equally so. I highly recommend a visit. Just don't do it with ungrateful Bar stewards. The next time old no hands Harriet asks me to open a jar for her....tough luck.

Great place for Sunday roast lunch, reasonable price's & good sized portions. The pub is probably the best in the village attracting students & locals of all ages with a good selection of food & beers.

Came here regularly back in first term (really handy being so close to campus) to grab lunch between lectures or for a few drinks at the end of the day. It has always had such a great atmosphere whether I was by myself or with friends. After hearing that there was a new owner, I was slightly apprehensive in case there were massive changes. However, as soon as I arrived was delighted to see that the few changes I noticed had made the place more welcoming. Decorations were a lot tidier and cleaner looking, the new menu is fantastic and affordable (thank goodness!) and they have great bar staff! I 100% recommend and will definitely make it a regular place for myself!

A proper old back-street pub; with a proper pub sign; and proper people in it; proper bar staff...atmosphere...beer - the lot.I don't know why, but with England losing countless pubs and therefore swathes of its heritage, many that are left seem intent on transforming themselves into faceless roadside cafes with sickly grey paint where once was cosy decorated walls, signs consisting of white lettering on black background where once there were individual pictures, and subdued chatter between the odd dining family (if they can tear themselves away from mobile phones) where once there was conviviality, comradeship, laughter and the pure joy of simply enjoying a pint with ones mates.This is a wonderful place - please look after it.

Medium sized English Pub with a nice area out the back - prices are affordable for students and the beers are good as well. Service was fast and friendly. Have not tried the food yet so cannot comment on that, however the atmosphere is a good one and the pub itself is a usual hang out place for people who just want a drink and a chat.
