The Hammer & Pincers in Boston

This was our first visit after the take over by new management. Sadly this previously excellent venue was at best disappointing. Hopefully, this is just a teething issue and things will improve. We found the service slow, the food at best okay - but only just. There was no atmosphere and we could not justify the cost of the meal. I do wish the new owners lots of luck with this venture, I don't think we will be returning.

I came here with my mum for Sunday Roast which was fantastic. The food was really delicious and we didn’t feel rushed at all. The table was not booked but they fitted us in. I would definitely recommend this

We came here and had a cracking evening meal last year in a packed out restaurant but things have changed badly, I understand that it had since changed hands and is under new mismanagement. Our experience was shockingly bad. The place being empty, our booked table was given a "sit where you like" this didn't bode well. Next red flag was that despite being basic pub grub there was so many dishes off the menu. For instance we hit upon the missing scampi, battered cod and the steak and ale pie all off the menu! Would have have easier to tell us what was left on menu not what was off. Frozen scampi ? lol how can they 56 one of the most basic staple pub grubs? No specials dishes on either. Clear sign that there is no chef on either! I personally took the safe bet and ordered gammon egg and chips, what could go wrong? Coming up to an hour later in a near empty pub with no staff in sight we still had not been served our 3 meals, no explanation or warning of delay. Clearly a very badly managed kitchen. On the hour wait and no food we had to walk out hungry as it was beyond ridiculous service. With all those red flags and lack of competent kitchen staff we felt we couldn't trust the safety of the food if it did ever appear. I could be wrong but at a guess they didn't have proper kitchen staff on. No chef. I bet they felt it was a quiet week-day evening with only one or two covers booked why employ a competent kitchen? Thankfully we had amazing food and service across the road for our evening meals for the rest of the week.

Really dog friendly pub. The food was lovely and lots of it. We had lunch there and then went back for dinner. It is a traditional pub with a tap room , lounge and dining area.

Used to be a regular but was really disappointed this time. The positives were that the staff were lovely. The meal was poor in comparison to a couple of months ago. The BBQ pork ribs didn’t have any sauce no flavour of BBQ looked boiled and didn’t taste good. The lasagne was dry and portion was small The suet pudding was ok, but the veg was swimming in water and there was no gravy. Won’t be going back till I see or hear Møre positive reviews which is a shame.

Having been to the hammer lots of times in the past and always had a decent meal I found TONIGHT VERY DISAPPOINTING. The prices have increased a lot and the quality and portions has gone down much more. And to top a very ordinary meal we were charged £3.10 for a small lemonade. It`s a shame that after a lot of years enjoying evenings at the hammer we will be looking for a new venue and never go back. party of 5

Sunday carvery 9/7/2023 Lovley Sunday lunch beef very tender all the vegetables were fresh and the Gravy lush maybe a little overpriced however the drinks were very reasonable.

We had starters and mains I was a little disappointed with the soup as it came out cold but the pate and the mushrooms were good. Then for mains there was a very long wait with a lot of people complaining about the wait. My roast dinner was good the omlette I believe the other half was stuck the the pan. Drinks were a very long wait too. The staff were friendly and very busy.

Went here for mid-week lunch and we were not disappointed. I ordered a cheese omelette and my husband had a Spanish omelette. Both arrived swiftly and were delicious. Service was friendly and efficient. Lovely meal and we will be back.

I had lunch here one Saturday with a family group including two small children. The menu was extensive with standard British pub grub together some nice offerings from the grill, burgers, vegetarian dishes, ‘sizzlers’, paninis, daily specials, senior citizens and children’s meals. The helpings of our starters and mains were massive, tasty and served really hot. We were all too full for puddings! There was a great selection of beers and wines. Although advertised as a family pub, there appeared to be no children’s activities on offer (e.g. colouring or drawing materials). On the day we went there was chaos in the smallish car park as it included a stall selling fireworks which was clearly extremely popular and some of our group had to park elsewhere (not very convenient when you have small children). It was good value for money and overall, mainly due to the quality of the food, we enjoyed the experience and would happily go again provided we could find a parking space.

Senior citizens menu roast pork It had been microwaved the pork was tough one slice i think The veg was frozen peas frozen carrots and cabbage dipped in water. I think a dog would have looked at it twice and walked away. Will never set foot in the place again.

Stopped here for mid-week lunch following a local walk. We hadn't made a reservation so couldn't sit in the restaurant as it was fully booked, but we were offered a table in the main bar area. I chose the vegetarain lasagne (£9.95), it came with chips, garlic bread and salad, and was truly delicious, plus it was a good portion size. Both the staff and locals made us feel welcome and we would definitely visit again.

Not good Is everything OK, she asks. Not really I said, I wanted chicken Maybe next time bring your own That's like bringing my own sausage and asking for sausage and mash. No way would my sausage feed 4.

As the hotel we were staying at did not provide breakfast due to their restaurant being closed, we were recommended by a local to try the Hammer and Pincers for breakfast. So glad we did! The lady was very welcoming and the breakfast served was lovely and really good value for money.

5 of us booked in for a meal every night for the week. Arrived on time the service was poor,staff rude and made us wait ages for sub standard food. Won't bother again.

Had lunch here and the staff are friendly giving good service and the food was great and hot, only had a main course as we didn’t have room for dessert. A choice of real ales on offer was a bonus.

Waited hour for food, food was not very warm. Will not be going there again. Disappointed as I heard it was a lovely place to eat.

Wednesday 8th July 2020. My wife and I visited The H & P at lunch time today for the first and last time. My wife commented that her meal was good, unfortunately mine certainly was not. The Steak and Ale pudding was the most over cooked meal that I have ever faced in my 67 years. The suet pastry outer of the pudding was baked like a pie crust. It was solid, dry, almost crusty and it was not not edible. No gravy was provided and the plate was overloaded with unnecessary vegetables. We remarked on this to the young server, who consequently apologised. At the point of settling the bill my wife reiterated our complaint to which the lady commented “sorry about that, bless you”! Very disappointing. They got our money. Don’t let ‘um get yours.

After being ignored by the characterless staff in the bland chain pub on the opposite side of the road to the Hammer and Pincers, we decided to escape across the road to said pub.What a great decision it turned out to be.Great atmosphere, friendly welcoming staff not to mention the great selection of beers and food on offer.Nothing was too much trouble as we both mixed and matched stuff off the menu. The liver and bacon was just like mother used to make and the size of the suet pie had the lady beaten .... great food!When in the area please support this independent family pub - they deserve and appreciate your trade.

Recently went there for the firms Christmas meal. About 30 of us. Food was excellent and service faultless Would definitely go again.

Extremely rude member of staff . I am sure it’s the lady who owns it . Parked my car in the car park as I needed to pull over, remained inside my car , she came out threatening me . Often use this pub for a drink and food . Last time we ever go in there ! Ever !

Just over 3 years ago we mused over the wisdom of the local authority granting a licence and permission to build the Chain bridge opposite the Hammer and Pinchers.Yet the ineptitude, inefficiency and poor food and service offered at the Chain Bridge, has it seems benefited the Hammer and Pinchers, and rightly so.The Hammer does the basic things well, a clean pub, serving good beers and great food at sensible prices.We dropped in for a (latish) lunch, it was about 13.45, but this was no problem to the staff that welcomed us and offered seats in the cosy bar, or well furnished conservatory.We qualified for the pensioner’s lunch, but decided on the 2 for £12 offer of a roast beef; roast tates and veg for my wife and the chicken and leek suet pudding with the same veg for me. Within minute, two plates, both hot, both full of hot food appeared.We ate well, my wife enjoyed her lager and I enjoyed a full mug of hot tasty coffee.The weather outside was very cold, very wet and very grey, but for a goodly few minutes we basked in the warmth of the pub, and the knowledge that there are still people who know how to run a pub well.

We went into The Hammers & Pincers for a nice lunch. We stood and waited at the bar as unsure where to sit and eat (there was a couple eating a meal at a table by the bar) as we are new to the area. We were seen by a gentleman who seemed to be working through the bar area into another bar but ignored. A member of staff of land lady - unsure - walked behind the bar and my husband asked 'can we sit anywhere'? 'not 'ere you can't, there's wake - you can go in there' said with a snarl and a flick of her hand. We didn't know where 'in there' was, she was so rude that I said we would leave it. With that she pulled a face and we left. Never to return. There are plenty of other places to eat and with pleasant staff.

My meal which was a combo was lovely. My husband sent his steak back three times it was freezer cold. The waitress a darling . But women at bar said never had any one moan about steaks well your a lier as it says it on trip adviser. She put me off comeing back there not the steak.but again the young waitress was fabulous but I wont be returning .because of the witch behind the bar

I celebrated my leaving party here last night and the Hammer laid on a delicious Carvery, roast beef, turkey, yorkshire puddings, stuffing, peas, carrots, cabbage, broccoli and roast potatoes. I am also extremley grateful to them for not covering the turkey in bacon (as i have an allergy to pork) and also making the gravy gluten free. The food was hot and delicious. The staff were all so lovely and friendly, which always makes a difference when out for a celebration. I recommend anyone who want a celebration of any kind with a large group of people, who want to enjoy a fabulous carvery, to go to the Hammer

Been told that the food here was worth going for so we did.We sat down and orderd our meal,,,which took 40mins to come,,we wouldn't of minded as much if it was busy but there was only 1 table of 4 in and us,,,we finally got our meal,,i had a mild chicken curry which was more like a pea curry as you couldn't see the chicken for the peas and wasn't very tasty,,my fella had ribs,chicken burger meal,,everything was ok till he came to the ribs which where stone cold,,,,,We will NOT be waisting our time here again when you can clearly get a better meal from a takeaway.

We have eaten at the Hammer and Pincers many times but recently the food quality has really dropped. Our latest meal included an additional "grub" on the broccoli. This was reported to the waitress whose response was well it has been washed. I suggested that an appropriate price adjustment should be made. The response of the bar staff member gave the impression that it was acceptable to find additions in the prepared vegetables. The bill was reduced by a total value of half of one lemonade. This should have been at least half of the cost of the affected meal and not by reducing half of the cost of a drink which did not have any faults. The bar staff member was not apologetic and continued to argue that the food was acceptable. It is suggested that some customer care training would be useful. It is unlikely that we will return to this establishment in the future unless we hear that standards have improved.

My family was treated last night to two gristly steaks, a small portion of lasagne and ping ribs. In addition, I was embarrassed to sit through my meal with my wife, daughter and son in a conservatory with a group of loud men who were insistent on swearing. During our premature departure I was asked if everything was OK, having spent £75.00 for the dining experience I gave feedback on which the land lady was defensive and aggressive towards my remarks. My advice would be; take your family and your hard-earnt money elsewhere. Poor management in my opinion, the land lady gave the impression that she endorsed the use of foul language on her premises and gave no response to the gristly steaks!

We attended lunch with 9 other people too celebrate our 55th Wedding Anniversary on the 29th August, Pleasant surroundings and Wonderful Food, We will certainly return..

baked potato with beans and a basic side salad - meh. unimaginative and poor value for money. so many tasty vegan recipes out there - get creative please.

Visited while on holiday. Had a lovely meal friendly service. Young lady was so polite when she didn’t have enough Bakewell tart for us all. Would visit again.

We ate here for 3 meals while on a short stay in Boston, each time the food was well above what you would expect, and the service was spot on, the host and owners of the pub are a very helpful couple.

First visit here, pleasantly surprised. The outside looks a bit tired but don’t be put off as the inside is much nicer.

After a few times of going to the same places to eat, we were all tired of the same old same old, tired and sometimes cold sunday late dinners, late because my other half does shifts, we were tired of complaining about the so-so food, and the constant "Is everything ok ...Can i get you anything..." Patter.. its all so false.. food reheated straight out of a freezer, no flavour unapealing and mostly tasteless, mass produced rubbish Well intentioned people, pleasant enough just pity it was the food let it down - constantly

We have used this place as our breakfast stop on the way into Boston on many occasions. It is usually OK but this visit the standard had definitely dropped. The sausages I tasted were sour so my wife wouldn't touch them. Everything was covered in black bits off the grill. The tomatoes were rock hard (how hard is it to grill a tomato!) and my wife's eggs were raw. We ate what was edible because we were hungry and when the waitress came over and asked if everything was OK I pointed out the issues. She was pretty rude and her attitude was of one who thought we were causing an issue when there wasn't one. I don't complain if nothing is wrong. She disagreed with the sausage issue saying they were fresh that morning (I know a sausage on the turn, believe me!) and she disagreed that the grill had left everything with black bits on, even though you could see it all in it's greasy glory.

Lovely carvery on Sundays. Food was well prepared. Have eaten here a few times and never been disappointed with quality of food. Friendly welcoming staff. Would thoroughly recommend

We’ve been to many places around Boston for a Sunday roast and not one is a patch on the hammer!! Got served straight away for drinks and told to go through to our table where we could go straight up for our carvery. There was a choice of beef, lamb or pork, our party had the beef and lamb and both were cooked to perfection, everywhere else I’ve been the beef has always been “ok”, this was delicious! Cannot fault any part of the meal whatsoever, and staff were very friendly too. We will definitely be returning

We went for a meal tonight the 11th Dec 2018. The meal was first class the staff were friendly and couldn't do enough for use, I would recommend the pub this is the third time we have been and it has always been first class.

Lest previous review on wrong site. We eat here regularly, good food friendly staff always willing to accomadate requests.

First time in going for a meal won’t be the last food was amazing home cooked very friendly staff... warming log fire very homely 😊

After attending a family get together we ordered food when the food came half the food was only luke warm chips awful tasted like frozen and hard to top it all ordered three burgers coldslaw advertised to come with meal all 3 portions never turned up also ordered two curries mango chutney again to be served with meal again none turned up also ordered a scampi, garden peas or mushy peas ordered mushy peas again no peas turned up.

I called in for dinner and received a warm welcome from bar staff. Good menu choice and was home made dishes on menu. My lasagne was delicious and good size portion. It soon got busy with diners and nice atmosphere. Will return again soon.

Had a lovely Steak pudding with veg, roast potatoes and gravy, friendly service, had to wait a while for food but worth waiting for as it was served hot and veg cooked perfectly.

Great place. Ate here a few times and gorgeous food everytime. Big portions and very good value for money. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend

Family meal booked for 34 people is always a tough task but this was dealt with really well , the young waitresses dealt with this well and credit to you , bar staff including the owners were very warming , the sort of people you would be happy to chat to all night .

Unfussy tasty and a very good helping, clean and relaxed surroundings , just the ticket . I had Liver and Bacon and to be honest was a little nonplussed with it’s appearance but it tasted great definitely recommend it.

Chicken curry was lovely. I would say enough for two people lol. I just wish the nann bread was bigger !

My daughters birthday we went for a family meal out. Lasagne, chilli, rubs, ham egg and chips. Generous portions didn't have to wait long for freshly cooked food. Only downside was the birthday girl said her lasagne hardly had any meat, being mainly tomatoes, and was quite greasy, but as she didn't say til we got home we couldn't mention it at the time. Would go again as there is a varied menu at a reasonable price.

Nice pub, good food at a reasonable price, the main restaurant area is a conservatory & could get quite warm, the owners & staff are friendly & helpful, reasonable size car park, well worth a visit.

Flying pit stop at 2.15pm on a Monday. Asked if we could get a meal and also bring in our dog. We were told no problem if we didn’t mind eating in the bar. All I can say was the young lady who took our order and served us was exceptional. Nothing was to much trouble and made us feel so welcome. And to top it all the food was very good as well. When we are next in the area I will be definitely be back.

Average food, not as good as goodbarns yard or the castle, but more expensive, staff were friendly, but food wasn't anything special, my son had the roast of the day (not alot on the plate), I had the hammer combo (a bit of everything, but no real taste)

This is a nice pub/restaurant with a decent menu and fair prices. We arrived here after being told there was an unreasonable wait for a table at the Chain Bridge across the road. We were very nicely surprised with great food and a lovely bottle of Pinot Grigio. The staff are helpful, friendly and attentive. We both had Liver and bacon....what a tasty meal and very good portions. The wine was very welcome and served by a polite staff member who also brought us a wine cooler. There is a car park and it is easy to find as right on the roundabout on the A52 and opposite The Chain Bridge......give The Hammer and Pincers a try, it is a really decent pub. Meal and drink just over £30.

Visited today with our x daughter in law. The conservatory had air con so was pleasantly cool. We were very impressed with the food , steak, chicken , & pie , which we all enjoyed . It was early when we ate so it wasn’t busy. Highly recommend .

Very good, really enjoyable, I eat there every time we go shopping at Tesco, or Lidl... yummy The pudding is good too.

Food was very good,, but Beer very expensive. 75p a pint more than my local 5 miles away. £3.75 a pint bit over the top. Having said that I enjoyed my visit and the food was very good.

Four of us went out for an early evening meal. Must have been cooked in too hot a temperature, two omelettes were overcooked,tan in colour,not yellow,with a burnt taste,the haddock in breadcrumbs was Brown with overcooking. The roast was ok,though. Service slow,we'd finished our drinks by the time the food appeared. Drinks ok,though. Maybe a staffing issue in the kitchen,but shan't rush back, sorry

Been twice in one week, once for a celebratory meal and the service was super. Lovely friendly staff, quickest serving of meals, and the food was lovely. Went again today for a carvery with friends and again was excellent. Super value for money and great food. Can not recommend enough

We had the pensioners lunch two courses it was very nice at a good price don't remember just how much but very good quality and value for money.

Food is served piping hot. Beef was a little tough you get loads of vegetables and it wasn’t bad. Staff are friendly and service was good.

Popped in for dinner .. we were seated in the conservatory which was quite nice , it wasn't busy so not too much hustle and bustle .. Food was average price these days and good quality . The garden outside the conservatory could do with a bit of attention but that's all .

This establishment seemed to struggle with larger parties of people, although it had been pre booked, tables had not been moved together for our party and staff involved appeared flustered. I was looking forward to the carvery only to be disappointed, Lamb was over cooked for my taste not a hint of pinkness and verging on dry, veg were also over with mushy broccoli, and the carrots were quite soft, gravy was ok, but not much choice in potato's and finished off with stuffing which was quite tough to get trough. It was edible but i've had much better. To give benefit of doubt it may have been an off day but if this is the regular standard I would not be returning.

Called in off the chance on Sunday . The landlord very nice guy fitted us in though it was full . Meat was wow very tender and the whole Sunday lunch was good . And you don't wait for ages we were served within minutes ,and carvery you just help yourself anyway . But people who moan ,moan about life in general . Just unhappy people ,so give bad reviews . My opinion top class good price . I will go back yes . And by the way the steaks are good tender ,not stringy like a reviewer said . Try it you won't be dissatisfied,Just get it down you . Popped into this traditional pub for Sunday lunch without booking ....no problem ...the dining room was full of diners but we were seated straight away ...a choice of 3 meats at the carvery ,all the vegetables were fresh and not frozen and lovely thick gravy . Nice place to eat in the conservatory and all the staff cheerful and friendly. This place is right by a big chain restaurant but will definitely be going back to the Hammer and Pincers

Went for a meal Thursday evening walked from our house so could have a couple of pints before eating must say the beer was the best part went inside was told we where on table no1 sat there for 10mins waiting for somebody to turn up to take our order and get another drink finally the same women who told us where to sit appeared with menus forgot to give them to us ordered more drinks another 10mins past went to the bar myself to get the drinks (sorry but very busy at mo) sat there some more when the wife had had enough and went to the bar to ask if anybody was going to take our order only to be told you have to go to the bar to order your meal (on the way out saw sign on bar that told you to order meals from bar could not see it on way in) wife had chicken curry with rice and extra bowl of chips looked like a vesta curry straight from the microwave very bland though I would treat myself to a ribeye steak with onion rings chips and a side salad couldn't eat all the steak as it was so stringy and tough saved the rest for the dogs along with most of the chicken from the curry have booked for Sunday Cavery but will cancel this as will not be returning any time soon very poor service and food
