Great find whilst walking in South downs Way, really good meal. Definitely superior to normal 'Pub Grub with their French chief. Staff exceptionally helpful and attentive. Big added bonus of being able to pass a peaceful night in our campervan in their large , flat carpark. Will definitely return, thank you Tom and your team

I am not one to usually leave reviews but after our visit to the Half moon on Tuesday evening me and my wife felt we must, After seeing the Half moon on Brit stop and calling ahead to be told yes we can use the car park overnight, We arrived and we were greeted by Tom the manager can we just say he was probably the politest most professional person we have ever met, He went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. The pub was very old very warm and cosy.. The food was absolutely Fantastic we both had the special pork chop of the day and it was delicious and just what we needed after a long day travelling. We were so well looked after the manager even went as far as to allow us to our van with wine glasses and he brought us water to the car park as we had no supply. 10/10 We would recommend visiting the half moon top notch food and service.

We were staying in Blackberry Wood campsite and had booked a table at this pub a few days before arriving. It’s was very busy, so I would recommend booking before hand. The weather was good so we sat outside in the beer garden for a few drinks whilst waiting for our table. We were in no rush so wasn’t bothered that our table was 20 minutes later than the booking time. There were only a couple of staff running the small bar inside and taking food orders and although they were very busy they were very efficient and good at their jobs. Once we were shown to our table the wine was brought to us within minutes, the food order taken straight away and the food arrived well within 15 to 20 minutes later. It was lovely, I had the pork belly and my gf had the roast beef, I ordered side dish of cauliflower cheese. We bother devoured the lot! Throughly enjoyed the Sunday roasts and going by the amount it people present, there are a lot of returning customers. I did read a few negative reviews on Tripadvisor but I can say we were very happy with both the food & service and would recommend to others. We would definitely return if in the area.

Some history. Two years ago we had a short break in Eastbourne (had visited previously for day trips with younger kids). On the way down we stopped at the Half Mon pub in Plumpton East Sussex and had a very good meal. Fast forward two years and we had a 3 day break in Eastbourne. On the way home we stopped off in Lewes. Charming town, but it was raining. The obvious thing to do was to head to The Half Moon fir a late lunch. Best decision... Pint of Harvey's best bitter shandy for me, the driver. And a tea for the co-driver. Lovely menu of classic pub lunch standards and a few lovely looking specials. I plumped for the steak and ale pie with mashed potatoes and vegetables and TOH went for the chilli con carne off of the specials. Best pie in quite a while. Perfect pie pastry. Tender chunks of beef. Silky smooth mash. Carrots, peas, and cabbage completed the picture. TOH's chilli as on the money too. Good helping of chilli, rice, grated cheese, and sour cream. TOH had an affogato to finish and i had a large expresso. Service (Tom?) was friendly and attentive. Delicious and delightful. Very highly recommended.

We booked a table 3 days ago for 6. 4 Adults and 2 young children, specifically because the pub has a good beer garden, and the online menu has a good selection of basic pub meals. On arrival yesterday, at 12:30, the pub was empty, our 2 cars were the only car in the car park, and there was only one member of staff on duty. They had cancelled the full menu, because they were changing the menu and had limited food to offer until the changeover. We were also told they could not serve food in the children’s area due to staffing issues. The children’s area is up a few steps, across the car park, up a slight hill, totally hidden from the pub next to some woods, so not really safe for small children, if adults can’t eat their food in that area. We had to go somewhere else, at short notice, which entailed a 20 minute drive. No apology, no staff, no service. No wonder the pub industry says it is suffering. The pub did look nice though, I’ll give it that.

Thursday night is steak night. £10 You get steak, chips, mushroom, tomato and aside salad. The steak was cooked to how I asked for it, thick cut chunky chips. Home made salad dressing which I didn’t think was that nice. Chocolate fondant for dessert came with vanilla ice cream and sliced fruit on top. Salt grinders not working properly so had to open it up to get some out. I asked for lemonade and spiced rum, the lemonade was flat as a pancake so this got replaced with a fresh drink.

Me and my Husband visited this beautiful little Gem on Wednesday and we were not disappointed, the pub has a Huge garden with a big kids play area and a mini golf course perfect for the summer. Although He was Very busy and seemed to be Alone the Manager Tom was extremely professional and could not do enough for us. The food was Very good I had a lovely salmon salad and my husband had the fish and chips (it was the size of a whale) We will definitely be returning to the half moon soon.

I love this place. First time, but I'll be back. Took the family and the service was fantastic. Busy, but its the sort of place you really don't care. They welcome you and your kids, and have great beers. Food was good, without being great, but again... It doesn't matter! Food for four (1 x starter, 2 x adults, 2 x kids, with two beers and two wines and two desserts was just over £100) and felt like great value for money. A real highlight to end our stay locally.

Feels like a pub where the location & outdoor space is doing all the heavy lifting. I was there with family and arrived just after it opened on a Saturday afternoon. I ordered the burger which came with bacon and weirdly had a chicken breast on it too. My partner ordered a sandwich (salmon & cream cheese) and we had a kids meal. The food was ready in literally 5 minutes which worried me! My burger had clearly just been reheated! It was so dry/grey and barely warm! The chips again were barely warm! The bread in my partners sandwich felt like cheap white sliced bread that was a few days old. The kids meal was £8 for two frozen chicken goujons , a handful of chips and some beans. It’s not cheap either so really disappointing. For balance the service was fine and the location really is lovely but the food really wad sub standard.

We booked a table for five outside for 2pm,we arrived after our dog walk at about 13:50 and found a table straight away, considering it was quite busy. We had our drinks while we were all looking at the menu… Honestly the menu was quite boring and nothing was really appealing. So we all ordered a range of different dishes,my wife, sister in law and mother in law had the ploughman’s. I had the fish and chips and my sister in laws husband had the burger… (who puts a chicken breast in with a beef patty) very strange if you ask me… My fish was nice and very crispy batter,my chips were under cooked and cold in the middle and my dog enjoyed the peas… It’s not a great menu, the service was good, the range of beers and ciders were very good. The food wasn’t great, for what we paid I was expecting more. (I was a head chef for twelve years,so I know what I’m talking about) All in all,not great at all. I definitely wouldn’t rush back and I wouldn’t recommend this place for food. It’s a shame really,as it’s a great location and has so much potential.

Food not too bad today BUT the awful swearing and shouting outburst that came from a male staff member in the shed area behind the kitchen, at lunchtime, was shocking. Luckily we didn't have children with us. Very friendly serving staff. We were sitting outside and were saddened to see how unkempt and unloved it looks. Big weeds growing everywhere and leaves not swept up. Some work has obviously been done but it badly needs some TLC.

So after where to spend our very rare time off together for lunch we picked the half moon pub in plumpton as hadn't been for a very long time, and most definitely left very upset and extremely unsatisfied. After debating what to pick and both decided to have something smaller than a main meal we picked 2 different ciabattas from the menu. Which we wished we hadn't! After waiting a good 20 mins for this to arrive and to be served the waitress asked if we would like any condiments, while she went to get it I looked at my ciabatta and to see a dark hair sitting in amongst the side salad of rocket.. when she returned I showed and picked it out she apologised and said I'm sorry I will take it back and get u a fresh one, so as you can imagine that already had completely put me off and left me feeling very disappointed and let down. My partner then didn't want to start his as wanted to eat to together I told him to start and i shared the chips while I then had to wait for mine to come out again. This time presented on a different coloured plate. Being put of and finding a hair this made me pick about at it and I honestly couldn't believe what I'd been dished up inside, I'd picked gammon ham with mustard.. when I say mustard I was given practically a whole jar of wholegrain mustard! It smothered so think on the whole thing, I picked about and then realising all the gammon ham was fatty and not something you should expect to have or even want to eat! I did try to pick and scrape it out and eat some buy by this time I was completely put off. Not once did anyone come over to ask if our food was ok, and considering the start of the meal with the hair I was very unimpressed that no follow up to see how the food was.. after sitting waiting I had to get up and go to the bar and seek who was in charge.. I raised my complaints to him and he then looked at my food and agreed that wasn't correct and apologised and did offer us some other food or a drink we said no, then disappeared to the kitchen with the food. We wasn't charged for the food or my partners considering we didn't eat together really and even his wasn't nice the sausages were luke warm not hot.. considering we were offered a complimentary drink I did ask shall I pay for the 2 x drinks we had we was still charged that...won't be returning.. shame I used to love this pub growing up!

The Half Moon catered for a large gathering for us following a local funeral yesterday. They were outstanding and went above and beyond to make it a very special time for us all. Roisin, the manager, was brilliant. She understood from the beginning exactly what we would like and pulled it together beautifully. She took the stress away from us at a very difficult time and made the occasion very easy and relaxing for us. The food was delicious and plentiful. The service was friendly and efficient. We were made very welcome and it was an ideal venue to be able to sit by open log fires, eat lovely fresh food and catch up with old friends and family. Thank you Roisin.

The welcome by a friendly waitress was good and all seemed promising. When my friend asked for clarification re a white wine she was offered a sample to try - very good. Then things just declined. Having been handed the menus and made our selections we were then informed that both our different starter choices were not available (a 13.00 booking!). As all the prices were quite high I would have expected our alternative choices of ‘vegetable soup’ to have been excellent- it wasn’t. The main courses arrived with our choice of mash potatoes. In addition to being very mediocre and flavourless mash (suggestion of mass produced!) it was cold. Our whole plates were taken away so they could microwave. My friend ordered desert and coffee. The coffee arrived - but no lemon meringue pie. However- it was still on the bill. Towards the end of our lunch the kitchen was clearly being cleaned. Whilst this is admirable the door should be kept closed as it was very unpleasant to be subjected to intense bleach fumes. Our original waitress finished her shift and said a friendly farewell. The handling of the incorrect bill was by a very young man. By then the pub was empty so there was no excuse for the complete lack of effort by the man who appeared to be management. There was no effort at all re apology etc. And - no farewell. At £37 per head for lunch (one desert, 2 glasses of white wine, one zero beer, veg soup, mediocre pie and mash) I would have expected more. My friend is a journalist so it was mere luck that we were not having lunch to actually do a press review.

I don’t usually write reviews but feel compelled to especially as this pub had been recommended on a Facebook group page locally. Our waitress was friendly but busy so it took a while to get menus, a water glass and wine. Two of the five starters weren’t available and the soup we ordered was lacking seasoning. The pie main dish was good but not £17.50 good and the mashed potatoes were cold so we sent them back. A pudding was ordered and never arrived but was still added to the bill. A man we can only assume is the manager - because he never came anywhere near our table - sent a young waiter over to us twice to ask if the mistake was ours and we had cancelled pudding. We told the waiter that we were generally disappointed with our lunch which he conveyed to the manager. Despite this the manager saw us get up, collect our coats and leave but didn’t ask what had gone wrong, apologise - or even say goodbye or thank you. The pub indoors and outside at the front particularly looks a little rundown, the toilets need modernising. Yet another disappointing dining out experience in this country where you pay a lot of money for mediocre food, poor service with little show of gratitude from the managers. Another pub I shall sadly suggest is struck off the local recommendation list.

Booked a table for lunch for a family gathering on a Sunday lunchtime, but that will be the last time. There was a catalogue of issues from the outset. No menus were provided to us, or given to us when asked, so had to order from the small list of meals given to us verbally. Meals incredibly overpriced - Sunday roast, which should be the flagship meal of an English pub on a Sunday, was small, luke warm at best and had rock hard potatoes. Don’t be fooled by the large fish and chips - the ‘large’ refers to the portion of chips, not the measly battered fish fillet. We had to ask for our plates to be cleared after being sat on the table long after we’d finished. Dijon mustard provided when we had asked for English mustard and no de-caf coffee available. Finally, word of advice to the waiting staff, please don’t carry drinks by the rim of the glass when serving. Decor and furniture generally grubby and tired with areas of mould and dust. The whole pub could do with some TLC, which given the prices, you’d hope some money would be invested back in for maintenance and upkeep. Toilets no better - no hot water in the men’s toilet and one of the toilets was backed up. Women’s toilet no better - only toilet roll available was the dregs of a roll on the toilet floor. All in all, an underwhelming experience and given the prices charged, leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. Will not be returning.

Sadly the pub was in disarray. Initial confusion as to what was actually available on the menu - no vegetarian option apart from fish and chips....but ok, we can possibly do a starter as a main course. Food arrived cold (not nice for a Sunday roast!) and the waitresses, although lovely and trying their best, weren't really up to the job. Deserts again arrived cold and cutlery was dumped in one spot on the table with napkins. Bill was asked for and chased three times. We have been regular visitors in the past, but this will sadly be the last time.

Went to this pub a few years ago and had a great meal and would recommend. Returned today to find a seemingly stressed manager and a section of empty tables despite being told the pub was busy and being squeezed into a small corner. The food was very poor quality, which we gathered was because there was a new chef. We didn’t bother trying to negotiate with the management about our poor experience as it seemed obvious it would not be well received and who wants to go through all that when you just want a lovely meal. We chose the Half Moon for a family of 10 birthday lunch. Despite booking two weeks in advance and pre-ordering from the menu our food was very unsatisfactory, all meals that were served initially were, at best, warm only; one was cold and one didn’t even appear! On arrival we came in through the back of the pub and could see through to the kitchen were two members of staff wearing their chefs blacks sitting on the kitchen side on mobile phones so perhaps this is more à management issue? Overall very poor, just not good enough!

Looking at the website of the Half Moon the menu looks good - more gastro-pub; however the reality is different. We were a party of eight and our lunch-time meal of two courses took 2.5 hours due to slow service. Also, with respect to service, on arrival the barmaid only served us seven drinks for eight people who had all ordered drinks. My glass of Rioja was £7.60 which seemed excessive. There was no sea-bass available, so I took the substitute of salmon which proved to be a small portion for which the charge was £18! Also, for all eight of us the main course was not hot enough. I had a cheesecake desert but it had little resemblance to a cheesecake and the honeycomb stick was so hard I risked breaking a tooth on it.

Eight of us visited for lunch after a walk. We were early but were given the choice of outside or inside and we ordered drinks and our food. Then we waited, and waited. Asked twice if we wanted more drinks, but food took ages. When it arrived it was a mixed bag - very small fillet of overpriced and overcooked salmon and green beans, cold potatoes and rice. The fish and chips however was enormous, pronounced delicious and good value. Puddings, when they eventually arrived after another very long wait, were better, although a raspberry torte turned out to be chocolate and had to be sent back as the recipient unable to eat chocolate. No mention of chocolate on the menu, or any other allergy or dietary advice. Eton mess was delicious even with raspberries replacing strawberries. To sum up, the food was adequate but could have been better, service was extremely slow but the staff were pleasant. To be fair, none of us complained at the time, because we were in a party and none of us wanted to further delay proceedings by sending food back.

Four of us were dining, two had the beef and a lamb roast, I had the nut roast and the fourth person the crab. All were really not good. My nut roast was cold when arrived, it was also dry and roast potato was stale, there was a tomato sauce all over, it was tasteless. The other roast were also not nice and portions were small. Came to the half moon after not being for many months and it was even better than I remembered. The standard of good and service is very good. I ordered the sea bream, which was perfection and my friend had the vegan option, which she very much enjoyed. Keep up the good work as I hope to be back again soon.

Chose this pub to have my birthday lunch at with my three sons and daughters in law. We have been visiting The Half Moon for drinks since moving to Plumpton very recently and always wanted to have a meal there . The food was amazing and just as fantastic as we thought it would be , and family thought so too and nothing was too much trouble for the team ..which made this a very special birthday lunch... Great food with excellent service - thank you Daryl and Brian

Lovely setting, lovely pub, friendly service, seems like I'm in the minority, but very disappointed with quality of the food today. I only asked for the local pie, which was so bland and tasteless, and the vegetables very undercooked. I would not bother returning. I hope others find it more to their expectations.

Good parking and a lovely country setting. Child and dog friendly. Service was attentive. The interior has a terrific old English feel and two fires kept us nice and warm. I had a rib eye and it was tasty. Overall, our party rated the meals as average. Would I visit again? You bet!

We live in Northampton with our son & daughter in law in Brighton. The weekend of 28/29th September we came for one of our regular visits. The Half Moon Inn is a regular for our son & daughter in law and on one of our previous visits we had called in for a drink. They decided this time to book for Sunday lunch for our visit. Our daughter in law phoned and her telephone number was taken. We turned up looking forward to our Sunday lunch only to find a large board saying closed due to no power. Why bother taking customers phone numbers if you are not going to let people know there is a problem? How many other people were like us disappointed that Sunday. Luckily we were able to find somewhere else to eat, not easy at 2.15 on a Sunday. We did check with our daughter in law to see if she has had an apology since but no. I’m afraid you have lost 2 regular customers and visiting family as customers.

First time at this pub. Had a table booked for 8.30pm, we were told when booking that we must not be late as last orders are 8.50!! When we arrived on time we were put on a table in a side room away from most of the diners, no atmosphere but right by the toilets when there were other tables available.

This is a lovely area to walk in and this is a lovely dog friendly pub for lunch. Really nice outside space, divided between a courtyard next to the pub (chairs with backs a nice change to picnic benches!) and a separate grass area with children's play equipment. The food was presented nicely and tasted great, we went for lamb & onion bhaji burger (£12.50). Possibly not the place for a cheap snack as the panini's seemed a little expensive at £9 but I suspect were very good, based on what we had, and came with chips. Very friendly welcome from lots of staff.

We turned up (10 of us, including 4 kids plus 2 dogs) with no booking about 1240 on a summer Saturday after a very windy, but marvellous walk on the Downs. The pub was full but we would have sat outside (wind or not) as we were tired and hungry. However, the owner/manager/MD offered to open their private dining room for us. It was a spacious, nicely decorated room in a separate building across the outside dining area. I half expected that, as they were very busy and in a separate room that we might have to wait a while for service, but nothing could have been be further from the truth. They brought water (and treats for the dogs) immediately and took our drinks orders and let us choose from the menus. There is a kids’ menu with good portion sizes and dessert included. The main menu had options for all from ciabattas to steaks and 2 choices of fish of the day.

I went to this pub for lunch last Sunday for a friend's 40th birthday celebration. There was a group of 9 adults and 5 children (aged between 5 - 10). As we walked through the pub garden from the handy car park we were greeted with the smiles and friendly, informal and welcoming faces of the staff who directed us through to our table/s. The kids were all seated together which they loved. The person who served us was brilliant. He was very good with the children who really enjoyed ordering themselves. He was attentive and informative about the food choices. We had vegetarians and vegans in the group and all were well catered for. I had the pork roast which was delicious. The crackling was baked in with the meat and was very tasty. The accompanying potatoes, green veg and gravy were really good too. I'd highly recommend. Great setting, great service, great food. The puddings looked lovely too. Some in our group had the strawberry mouse which I'd never have chosen but I stole some and it was very tasty. I also thought it was very reasonably priced. The kids loved the playground too.

my mum and myself visited at a sunny lunch time, we sat inside but by the patio doors which was open providing a lovely breeze and chilled atmosphere, all the waiting staff where very attentive, happy and cheerful! The landlady was the friendliest person I’ve ever met approachable, very helpful to everyone that walked in. The garden patio was kept well, tidy with lots flowers and plants. Now the food was unbelievable plenty of choice without being overwhelming. We had starters, mains and pudding, just couldn’t say no it’s all sounded so tasty and it definitely was!! (Unfortunately I ate my dessert before taking a picture as it was soooo good) Would recommend to anyone in the area or to make the trip. We felt very relaxed after we definitely plan on returning with friends soon!

I saw this pub on line and made a provisional booking with a very nice young lady yesterday for ten people in August. Thank goodness we visited it to check it out today. The lady who seemed to be in charge was quite rude, unhelpful and had a take it or leave it attitude when mentioning that on Bank Holidays it's a limited menu and two sittings 12-2pm and you have to be out by 2 (her words) or 2-6pm. We were shown a private dining building which was a locked up shed and to be honest the place is quite shabby which is also the case for the children's area. I have no idea what the food is like and have no intention of finding out. I would not recommend this place if I was starving, mainly due to her attitude.

We had a lovely lunch here. There were 11 of us in total. Adults and kids. We pre-booked which is advisable. We chose to sit outside but they reserved a table inside as the weather looked a bit dodgy. The staff were brilliant. Quick with drinks orders. The kids menu was very good, bangers and mash was a hit! I personally thought the main menu was more than adequate. Too much choice and it gets tricky to choose but previous reviewers expected more. The food was amazing!!!! I had the lamb burger which gets 10/10 from me. There is a big play area for the kids with a snack shack serving ice cream/alcohol/coffee etc.

Visited with a friend as we wanted to eat at a country pub with garden. Very friendly Italian waiter greeted us on arrival and orders for drinks and food were taken promptly. Not much choice for the vegetarian so I opted for the veggie burger as didn’t fancy Poached Goose egg - the only 2 main veggie options. Burger was filling but lacked flavour. Peanut butter cheesecake was better!

Beautiful pub at the foot of the South Downs. Ideal for walkers, you would think? Not so, we popped in with friends for a swifter after a long trek. Another enjoyable night. Food and staff were great again. Matt is a superb host and engages with his customers so well. Sadly, not the first time some of the menu isn't available due to low stock. Come on owners, start getting things right and supply these hard working managers with the stock they need.to serve what is on your menus, so they don't have to constantly apologise to customers. They are doing their best and a great job, they need better support. Will certainly be back again..
