Looking at the website of the Half Moon the menu looks good - more gastro-pub; however the reality is different. We were a party of eight and our lunch-time meal of two courses took 2.5 hours due to slow service. Also, with respect to service, on arrival the barmaid only served us seven drinks for eight people who had all ordered drinks. My glass of Rioja was £7.60 which seemed excessive. There was no sea-bass available, so I took the substitute of salmon which proved to be a small portion for which the charge was £18! Also, for all eight of us the main course was not hot enough. I had a cheesecake desert but it had little resemblance to a cheesecake and the honeycomb stick was so hard I risked breaking a tooth on it.

Eight of us visited for lunch after a walk. We were early but were given the choice of outside or inside and we ordered drinks and our food. Then we waited, and waited. Asked twice if we wanted more drinks, but food took ages. When it arrived it was a mixed bag - very small fillet of overpriced and overcooked salmon and green beans, cold potatoes and rice. The fish and chips however was enormous, pronounced delicious and good value. Puddings, when they eventually arrived after another very long wait, were better, although a raspberry torte turned out to be chocolate and had to be sent back as the recipient unable to eat chocolate. No mention of chocolate on the menu, or any other allergy or dietary advice. Eton mess was delicious even with raspberries replacing strawberries. To sum up, the food was adequate but could have been better, service was extremely slow but the staff were pleasant. To be fair, none of us complained at the time, because we were in a party and none of us wanted to further delay proceedings by sending food back.

This was the second time we visited this pub for a Sunday lunch. The menu choices were rather small, apart from the roasts there were only two mains available. Four of us were dining, two had the beef and a lamb roast, I had the nut roast and the fourth person the crab. All were really not good. My nut roast was cold when arrived, it was also dry and roast potato was stale, there was a tomato sauce all over, it was tasteless. The other roast were also not nice and portions were small. The service was ok, could have been better. Overall very disappointing experience, they should do it much better. We are not planning to return.

Myself, my wife and 3 kids visited here from the local campsite at Blackberry Woods (about a 45 min walk away) and had a really nice meal. The staff were all very helpful and the food was great. The kids were shattered and couldn’t manage the walk back but it was really tricky to order a taxi (order in advance) and there were 5 of us which made it even harder. The landlady brilliantly volunteered to drive my wife back to pick up our car and drive back which was above and beyond the call of duty. Really grateful, would definitely recommend.

Lovely lunch at the half moon to celebrate reopening. Great staff, very welcoming. Husband had Brie ploughman’s. I had pie of the day (chicken, leek and mustard) with mash and mangetout. Both excellent. Very sentimental as the last place we had a meal with friends before lockdown such a long time ago now. It’s such a lovely chilled atmosphere but with proper quality pub food. I think you can tell the quality of a place by its olives, and these are large buttery and delicious.

I love this pub. First time back since lockdown. Menu changed a bit and was really happy with chickpea and beetroot burger with onion rings. Teenage kids had good old fish and chips while their dad had the ‘slimline’ option of crayfish salad main (lockdown having taken its toll on his waistline) only to ruin it with yummy chocolate desert. I loved my lemon tart. Portions great. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Laid back but efficient as always - adapted amazingly to current situation. Would fully recommend.

After a very enjoyable walk over the downs we went to the Half Moon pub for lunch which is situated in a very pleasant position at the foot of the downs. We ordered sandwiches and a bowl of chips, the sandwiches were very mediocre and the chips were soggy. The bacon sandwich was tough as though it had been sitting around a while. It was a great shame as the staff were very pleasant and the manageress did deduct the cost of the chips off our bill.

On arrival we had drinks in the Garden (incredibly overpriced) £10 for an Aperol Spritz which was not made correctly and the presentation was abhorrent dont charge premium prices for poor quality and presentation. Fast forward to the meal the Beef was raw, bloody and tough not to mention the 45 min wait between our starters and main course. During the wait for our mains we could clearing hear the manger screaming at her staff. She lacked basic courtesy and greeting skills as when we arrived she seemed put out by our request for a table despite calling ahead and being told tables were not reservable. Staff were not distinguished from guests as they walk round in track suits. Toilets were filthy just like their cutlery. With this in mind we were offered a complimentary meal for the raw beef.

After a day walking across the Downs, the four of us were looking forward to a beer and a hearty meal at The Half Moon. It was a lovely pub, very clean and tastefully decorated. The staff were very polite and attentive. The beer selection was good, though could have used a dark ale or stout, especially at this time of the year. Our only gripe was the size of the portions; in that respect, it wasn't very good value for money at all.

Called in for a meal, having not visited this pub for about forty years. We both ordered fish and chips and I can honestly say it was the best example of this dish we’ve had in a very long time. Well cooked with a huge portion of lovely fresh battered cod and accompanied by excellent chips, mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce. Apparently they have a new chef and only reopened a week ago, with every care taken to adhere to the new COVID regulations. I don’t know what it was like before the shutdown, but can thoroughly recommend its new incarnation. Well done!

Given the number of diners in the pub I was astonished at how fast the service was. Bream and red mullet were beautifully cooked. Chips were chunky and flavoursome. Salad was a bit mushy. Vegetable and nut roast was okay. The Yorkshire puddings were quite the worst I have ever encountered. The looked well risen, but they were chewy hollow shells. Good beer.

We live in Northampton with our son & daughter in law in Brighton. The weekend of 28/29th September we came for one of our regular visits. The Half Moon Inn is a regular for our son & daughter in law and on one of our previous visits we had called in for a drink. They decided this time to book for Sunday lunch for our visit. Our daughter in law phoned and her telephone number was taken. We turned up looking forward to our Sunday lunch only to find a large board saying closed due to no power. Why bother taking customers phone numbers if you are not going to let people know there is a problem? How many other people were like us disappointed that Sunday. Luckily we were able to find somewhere else to eat, not easy at 2.15 on a Sunday. We did check with our daughter in law to see if she has had an apology since but no. I’m afraid you have lost 2 regular customers and visiting family as customers.

We turned up (10 of us, including 4 kids plus 2 dogs) with no booking about 1240 on a summer Saturday after a very windy, but marvellous walk on the Downs. The pub was full but we would have sat outside (wind or not) as we were tired and hungry. However, the owner/manager/MD offered to open their private dining room for us. It was a spacious, nicely decorated room in a separate building across the outside dining area. I half expected that, as they were very busy and in a separate room that we might have to wait a while for service, but nothing could have been be further from the truth. They brought water (and treats for the dogs) immediately and took our drinks orders and let us choose from the menus. There is a kids’ menu with good portion sizes and dessert included. He was attentive and informative about the food choices. We had vegetarians and vegans in the group and all were well catered for. I had the pork roast which was delicious. The crackling was baked in with the meat and was very tasty. The accompanying potatoes, green veg and gravy were really good too. I'd highly recommend. Great setting, great service, great food. The lady who seemed to be in charge was quite rude, unhelpful and had a take it or leave it attitude when mentioning that on Bank Holidays it's a limited menu and two sittings 12-2pm and you have to be out by 2 (her words) or 2-6pm. We were shown a private dining building which was a locked up shed and to be honest the place is quite shabby which is also the case for the children's area. I have no idea what the food is like and have no intention of finding out. I would not recommend this place if I was starving, mainly due to her attitude.

On a quiet Monday evening four of us each had a really lovely meal with some interesting and unusual choices on the menu. The nibbles were excellent too with beautiful green olives brought in from the Italian owner’s home in Italy.

A massive thank you to the whole team at the Half Moon Pub for the best valentines dinner we’ve had as a couple in 11 years. The food and drink were perfect and the service friendly and welcoming. Very fair value for money too.

Went for Sunday lunch this week and loved the vibe of this quintessentially English pub. Love a good roast and ordered the beef which melted in the mouth, however my judgement of a good pub roast is the roast potatoes and these were very disappointing as was the dessert - cheesecake the base was not crunchy as you would expect in fact quite the opposite. My other half had the seabass and very much enjoyed it, but another of our party had the tempura vegetables and the batter was undercooked. I'm not sure if they were overly busy, but would not necessarily hurry back.

Found this place with Mum and have gone once or twice a year since. Friendly staff authentic food and drink and beautiful surrounding environment. The only droll is that the staff will not serve food in the play-area (you can take your food and drinks up there) but their is a café with limited options.

Tremendous pub for a pint whilst passing or a really varied food menu. Fun and friendly staff. 10 out of 10 for everything. Wish I live closer to this place!

Found this place by chance on our way from the races at Plumpton and were not disappointed in the service and the beer! We enjoyed it so much we decided to return to try the restaurant the next evening for dinner. A group of 4, we each had different meals which were freshly cooked and tasty. Much recommended.

The overall experience was pleasant. The staff are very polite and ottentive. We went for two starters to share and they were lovely locally sourced “ pheasant croquets” and “home made pittas with hummus” both were outstanding.

The Half Moon Pub is a favourite of mine, on my last visit it was my birthday and they made me feel so special. The food is to die for and is served to a very high standard. The staff are so polite and helpful and tended to all my needs. The landlady was adorable. The only place to celebrate my birthday. This public House is definitely worth 5 stars

Taking lunch on a cold February Saturday is not always easy if the age range of the party is 25-95 but the Half Moon catered so well for us. Atttentive, helpful staff and a good range of food from a menu that had both good pub staples and more exotic fare. Recommended.

Booked a table at 11:30 for 13:00, for 5 people and a good job we did as it was very busy and it is easy to see why. Good village gastro-pub, friendly service, dog friendly and good menu with wide range of drinks. We had two burgers, two sea bass and one blade of beef with some halloumi fries to share. Food was great, particularly my pork and apple burger with well cooked chunky chips. Very filling so we didn't try the puddings but had some nice coffees. Looking forward to coming here again.

After visiting the Half Moon last year for evening dinner, we thought it would be nice to meet there again for lunch as it it’s about half for people to meet. It was als nice to have my son with us and his new engaged fiancée, he is home on leave from the British Army and they travels over from the Isle of Wight.

Mel is such a warm hostess in this fantastic local gastro pub. Went for a family meal last night and we all had great food. The air dried ham and salami for starter is exquisite. I had my once or twice a year rump steak and it was totally satisfying- soft and succulent ! My daughter finds it hard to stray from her favourite ‘half moon pie’ served with broccoli and fries - “delicious”, she declared!

We visited The Half Moon during a circular walk we were undertaking. Both the welcome and the service we received was superb. We both had fish and chips with minted mushy peas. And we felt that they were the best we have had for a very long time. Well done chef and the team at the Half Moon.

Situated roughly halfway between Pyecombe and Kingston, this is a good lunch stop, though it's a bit of a descent/ascent off the path. Very welcoming and friendly staff, reasonable selection of food, beer and wines. Sat in the bar, slightly dark but comfortable. Good quality food at reasonable prices. Tasty chicken and leek pie. The staff at the Half moon are the best. We popped in on a chilly October Saturday with my friends mother. The staff took excellent care of us and the service was second to none. We had food and beers and I am happy to say that our food was so good and excellent service. I would highly recommend this venue.

Although busy and nearly sold out of roasts the staff were incredibly helpful with dietary requirements and general questions. They were friendly, approachable and always willing to help. The food was incredible, there was various vegan and vegetarian options which staff were happy to explain. The chips were huge well cooked and delicious. Will definitely be coming again.
