Have tried to contact pub to confirm, left messages on email and mobile ( landline doesn't work), and very discourteously, there has been no reply...

We had the most delicious, well cooked, hot and tasty Sunday roast at the Half Moon. The welcome into this pub is the warmest, kindest and most sincere we’ve experienced for a long time. The wine is very good value and tastes good. Above all the food is excellent. The portion is huge, with a fantastic selection of vegetables all included. The meat is good quality and the Chef is very happy to accommodate dietary requirements and restrictions. All in all a very happy Sunday lunch! Great value, warm environment, clean with lovely hosts. We’ll definitely be back … very soon!

Lizi and I were out on a road trip and we’re looking for a place to eat. I had driven past this place before and always wanted to pop in. So we did, on Sunday 17th Sept at about 1;45pm, just on the off chance that they may have a table. We were made to feel so welcome by the young man who served us, then by the Lady who I believe may have been the Landlady. The food was magnificent and be warned reader, the portions are huge. We highly recommend this lovely place 😊

After a long walk all we needed on a Sunday was a roast lunch. We had driven past the Half Moon on the way so thought we would give it a go. I am so pleased we did, the pub has recently changed hands and the food did not disappoint. Now I love a roast, this exceeded even my mums! Huge selection of vegetables , all perfectly seasoned with generous portions. The most delicious home made stuffing hall that accompanies this roast was the icing on the cake. We highly recommend a visit. Service was very friendly and everywhere was spotless. The girls running this pub deserve a huge pat on the back. A much needed addition to midhurst !!

Yesterday 30th October I drove back from Somerset to East Sussex and stopped desperate for a coffee, quick lunch and the loo! The charming general manager served me and could not have been more polite and efficient. He made me a couple of wonderful instant coffees - the coffee machine was out of action . I ordered chicken goujons and garlic mayonnaise which came with a salad and was delicious. The toilets were very clean as was the pub. When you are driving 200 miles and you stop you want the whole experience to be quick and easy and relaxing; all of which this was.

Each Sunday for the last few months I've explored various places to eat Sunday lunch in the South Downs. Many places have been very expensive or the food average or the service lacking or some combination of these three. The Half Moon hosted by Rosemarie has been an exceptional experience. Both the service and standard of food have been consistently fantastic. And exceedingly good value for money compared to other local places. I highly recommend Sunday lunch at this venue and would especially praise the turkey (followed by jam roly poly!)..

Came to the pub recently after seeing that they had a new chef onboard. We were greeted immediately by rosemary who was very welcoming. We had 2 young children with us and this wasn’t a problem. Rosemary got us a high chair and took our order. We thought we would try the pies as have always been big fans. The kids had pasta. After about 15 minutes the kids started to get a little fidgety, next thing rosemary comes out with their dinner saying the chef thought the kids might like theirs first. This was amazing and really helped settle the kids so we could enjoy our evening. We had chicken and leek pie and it was presented very well. I honestly could not fault this food. Served with chips or mash and veg which gave us options. Honestly very impressed with the service and will be returning to try more of the new chefs food.

We had been meaning to try this pub for a long time, having seen their marketing posts on facebook about steak nights - which included VEGAN steak (brilliant, as I no longer eat meat!). So we managed to book in on the last night of Eat Out to Help Out. Upon arrival, we had to wait at the bar for 10 minutes before we got served. We eventually got served, but weren't asked if we wanted ice etc. the cocacola tasted like plastic and gone off. We sat down at the table, which was sticky and pretty grim. We were then told that they'd run out of steak.. on steak night.. I then found that they had taken the vegan option off of the menu too. The only vegetarian options both had spinach and mushrooms in. There's more to life than mushrooms. I did query this on their fb page, but I was ignored. Hence this rating!

Absolutely atrocious. Preordered 5 nut roasts at Christmas, they served supermarket own frozen ‘nut cutlets’ and charged £10 each meal. THere was no vegetarian gravy available, the chef ‘forgot’ to get some, and the staff weren’t that apologetic. The vegetables were so over cooked and mushy they wouldn’t even stay on your fork. The landlord hid in the back room because he didn’t want to manage the situation and left the elderly dinner lady to take any complaints. Charged my elderly grandmother £50 for these sad excuses for a meal, which they had plenty of time to prepare for. The environment was not clean, the light in the bathroom was intermittent and you couldn’t see properly. Just awful from start to finish.

After a full on camping weekend we drove past this pub and saw a blackboard outside saying ‘breakfasts served for £6’. It was still quite early on Sunday but we thought why not? We pulled up and the pub looked closed. There were two people outside who obviously worked there and my boyfriend asked if they were open. They weren’t sure if they were but said did we want breakfast. We did so the (turns out) chef said he’d make us some. We went into the pub and sat down. We saw a coffee machine so ordered two coffees. The landlady(?) then made us two weak, instant coffees and we were gutted as we’d not had a hot drink all weekend. We were charged an extra £1.50 each for them too! So the breakfast didn’t include a drink. The chef then told us he had no beans - which was ok - but really?- if you’re advertising it outside. The food came - it was hot and tasty. No toast sadly (another breakfast given surely) but it did the job. The chef was very polite and checked if we’d enjoyed the food. A little music would have helped as we were alone in there and it was deathly quiet. It all felt a bit odd and I think I’d have preferred them to tell us they weren’t open as they clearly weren’t ready for customers. Not sure we will go back.

Booking over the phone was great. Really helpful and friendly. On arrival we were greeted with a warm smile by the landlord (I assume. Tall man, blue t-shirt) and directed the the dining room. We walked in and immediately asked if we had booked. No 'hello' or 'welcome'. Ordered our drinks and sat for around 15 minutes. Stood up to go for the carvery and we were asked if everything was alright with our meal. This was getting strange now. The food was amazing though. Beat cauliflower cheese I've ever had in a restaurant. The chef actually came over and asked if everything was alright with our meal. Which was appreciated as no one had bothered until he asked. I understand when it's busy it does get hard, but there were only 3 other tables. The dessert was hands down my favourite bit. I asked for the Apple pie and asked if it would be possible to have custard and cream. I was told no immediately and was informed it didn't go together. I was very surprised by this. Having worked in the industry myself for many years I've been met by many requests and always catered for them if I could. I did end up getting both, but I suspect that was because I was over heard saying how rude it was. I was ignored for the rest of the meal by the waitress. Excellent food but customer service training would not go amiss. I won't be returning purely because of the service I received

Very odd atmosphere in this pub. Staff, bar the landlord who was friendly enough, all seemed generally disengaged and / or stressed / rude. We were actually told off by the lady who greeted us for moving tables (even though the man who showed us through said we had a choice between two). Then when she took our desert order later she told us she was due to finish her shift so she couldn't wait for one person who was away from the table changing a nappy (she helpfully suggested that we could use the sofa in the main dining area to do this next time as everyone else did....). The waitress, who served us desert, left stacks of our dirty main dishes in the centre of the table and simply served our deserts around them - no intention whatsoever of clearing them or the other empty tables around us. Never experienced a meal quite like it! Serious customer service training needed in this place!

We went to this pub as a family and had pre booked it. We were a large party and they were able to accommodate us on Easter Sunday. Upon arrival it was clear we were the only ones there apart a few in the bar area. The table was set and two high chairs were at the table as requested. We were told at the time of booking that there was only a roast dinner available which actually suited us anyway. There was nothing else available apart from deserts which were actually very good! Presentation could have been slightly better (ice cream had been slapped on) but the taste is what mattered. The roast was reasonable and hot! The only comment would be that the peas were from a tin and the roast spuds had been pre-cooked and re-heated but if you're not expecting a coach load of people then I can understand why. The owners made a real fuss and regularly asked if everything was ok. They put on an Easter egg hunt which the kids loved and they really wanted us to have a great meal at their pub. What was missing was a little bit of warmth, back ground music and a few locals drinking the beer and ale. The toilets were spotless and the tables were very very clean. I think that with a bit of support from locals, a bit of heating, more varied menu with a small choice of starters and fresh peas then this pub could be good. The garden is a good size and there's ideal parking space for bikers for a drink etc. I just hope that this isn't another one of Britain's pubs at risk of closing as unfortunately there are enough already closing.

We had my elderly mother with us plus daughter with small child and baby. We sat on a round table and were told that the menu was on the board in the bar. There was only a choice of about 4 dishes but the landlady said that we could ask for anything else and the chef would see if he could oblige. My husband and I decided to have gammon but was told there was only one gammon!!! The rest of the food our table had was good and hot but my gammon was like a thick bacon rasher. The staff were very friendly but the pub itself needs updating and a good clean. The toilets were probably the best thing about this pub.

I called in at the Half Moon on a Wednesday evening as I was working in the area. I had passed the Half moon on a previous occasion and thought that it looked really nice from the outside. A proper country pub.. My favourite kind.I'm going to try and be constructive and not just lay into it so please do not think that I'm exaggerating. It really was this bad, in fact, I have to say that I can not remember the last time I have had a meal as bad as this, even from a greasy road side burger van or a kebab shop. I almost feel sorry for them and having run a successful pub in the past, I kind of want to help them sort it out! On arrival I was looked at by two people who were stood in the door way smoking. I said hello as I walked past but there was no response. After walking in to the empty pub I discovered that the woman who was outside was in fact the bartender. She was dressed in jeans and a hoody and it was blatantly obvious that she has no knowledge of how to deal with non local customers in a front of house role. I'm sure she is a nice person, however she needs a lot of training. I asked if they served food and the response I got was... Errm, yeah, when he's back from the shops there will be food. (It's almost 7pm for God sake!!!!)I noticed that out of the "extensive" range of real ales that was advertised, most seemed to be off. I settled for the IPA. It was good, the right temperature and it tasted fresh. I was the only one there so I was pleasantly surprised. After getting my beer I went through to the lounge bar area and took a look around. The place has some really nice character features but it's in desperate need of some decor adjustment and tlc. This obviously costs money and I can understand why it's in the state it's in but as a starting point..Please please please get rid of the set of hideous white leather sofas and arm chairs! I will come and burn them free of charge! The menu - well I don't think I have ever seen All day breakfast (1 sausage, 1 bacon, 1 hash brown, 1 egg) on a pubs evening menu, EVER! The rest of the offerings are just as terrible and I can sadly say that I have seen better menus in kebab shops. It was evident that everything was going to be out of a packet and deep fat fried!I was going to go for "curry" but the type of curry was unknown so I changed my mind and went for the hunters chicken as that seemed like a safe bet. What can go wrong with a chicken breast, bacon, cheese and bbq sauce?I was presented with a plate that contained a mountain of brakes chips, a token kebab shop-style side salad (undressed) and the chicken. The chicken was the icing on the cake. It was about the size of a farmers market sausage roll. It was totally sauce and cheese less, wrapped in thick bacon and then deep fat fried. Apart from the pool of grease it was swimming in it was totally dry and actually, if I wasn't the sort of person that can eat almost anything, I would have said that it was utterly inedible. I did have to leave half of it as my cutlery couldn't cut through it where the fryer had removed all traces of moisture. I also found a chicken bone in there which from a chicken breast is quite strange. I'm hoping that it's not 4 day old roast chicken leftovers.I decided to skip desert as it was all from a packet and it was pretty much what was on my school dinner menu 20 years ago.. Jam rolly polly. Spotted dick etc. There is no excuse for serving utter rubbish like that! If you are going to do simple pub grub, DO IT WELL!Luckily I wasn't asked if my meal was ok otherwise I really would have lost it.It is such a shame to see pubs like this, it has real potential to be great but as it is I will be amazed if this pub is still trading in 6 months time!

My friends and I popped into this pub despite, being warned that it wasn't great. If only we had listened! Not only did the locals greet us with a 'there be strangers in town' silence, the staff were actually worse! By 11:00pm we were told to 'hurry up and finish' our drinks as they were closing. The 'delightful' bar woman hung over us, checking her watch and making us feel totally unwelcome. The worst atmosphere and service imaginable.

We booked a family lunch here as there are some lovely walks in the area. However, we were thoroughly disappointed with the food and the service. Whitebait came out without any coating as did child's chicken dippers (basically a plain fried and sliced chicken breast) The "mushroom risotto" was a plate of boiled long grain rice with mushroom sauce poured in the middle - not what is expected with the great choice of pub food available nowadays. Service was slow and because of this drinks needed to be ordered with separate trips to the bar (no soda water or grapefruit juice) We had to ask several times for cutlery and still ask again as not enough came out. The toilet's were grubby and in need of redecoration (not just due to the leak as the sign claimed.) We certainly won't be returning.

We go to this restaurant every time we go to Midhurst and have not been disappointed at all. We are a group of 4 seniors so only have the smaller portions, but these are really more than enough for us. The food is first class and the selection is terrific The service is second to none and the staff are extremely polite and very efficient. We as a group would recommend this restaurant and think it should have a Michelin star.

Orders mixed up, chips instead of new potatoes, scampi instead of Cajun chicken, veg consisted of disgusting overcooked peas no other veg available, only one member of staff available to serve drinks , wait on etc , asked to see Landlord or wife told they had gone shopping. Change of meal offered but all we wanted to do was eat up and get out. Will never set foot in pub again but felt sorry for the one member of staff trying to cope front of house . Good job we had cash as card machine was out of order!! Not surprised .Keep away.

Just come back from trying to get lunch here. Don't usually do a Tripadvisor review so quickly but this was such a bad experience I want to warn others. If you read the reviews you will see that the last decent one was November 2013. Downhill all the way since then. New owners perhaps?4 of us went there and ordered 2 ham sandwiches on white bread and 2 bacon and cheese paninis, There were only 4 other people in the restaurant, and they were all eating so we didn't think we would have to wait long. After 20 minutes the barman came to our table with a ham sandwich and a tuna sandwich, We said leave the ham, change the tuna. He said sorry he'd got the order mixed. So we waited again. We decided to eat the sandwich. It appeared to be "artisan" bread, in so far as you couldn't tell if it WAS white or brown, more beige. What you COULD tell was that it was stale. The ham was at least two days past it's prime - it had been decent ham at some point, but had gone over. So we waited to see what the next one was like. Nobody came to apologise for the delay, and after we'd waited for 35 minutes my husband went in to see what was happening. He met the barman coming out. With a prawn sandwich! Said, we ordered a ham sandwich, and where's the Panini? The man apologised about the sandwich and said the kitchen had got it wrong, and that the Panini were just being done. We waited again, and after another ten minutes decided to call it a day. There was no-one at the bar, so we knocked on the kitchen door, and told the barman we'd like our money back. At which point the owner? Manageress? appeared and told us that they worked on a ticket system, that they served meals in turn, and that we hadn't waited long. She even emphasised the point by looking at the bar tab and saying " Look, I can prove it, you didn't put in the order till 1.27!" It was the 2.10. So, we were wrong, it was only 43 minutes! Her attitude was VERY unpleasant, and she obviously resented being asked for a refund. There WERE another eight people in the bar by this time, all eating, I think they were probably friends or family who got priority service. However, I have worked in several restaurants over the years, both cheffing and serving, and I know that in a well run ( or even adequately run) kitchen cooking lunch for eight and making 4 sandwiches ( which is all a Panini is) is not difficult and should NEVER take that length of time. If something HAD gone disastrously wrong in the kitchen, then a smiled apology and the offer of a free shandy would have kept us happy. And as for serving grey ham on stale bread, what were the kitchen staff thinking of?. I would really strongly recommend that you avoid this pub. It is the pits.

My partner and I visited this pub on the off chance that they served breakfast. It was around 11am on a Saturday morning! We were in luck!, they were still serving and what a fabulous breakfast it was. We opted for the traditional size, I think you would have to be hungry to consume the large breakfast. We were served with good quality bacon, sausages, black pudding, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms and plenty of toast, butter and jam and also we asked for a 2nd coffee each that was included in the price. If my memory serves me well, I think we had change out of £15 so good value for money. The staff are friendly and polite. We will be back to try a couple of steaks when next in the area, we have received good reviews from our friends!

This pub is reminiscent of a traditional Inn, a place where travelers can call in for food and drink as they make their way.We were unfortunate enough to call in on a Monday when the chef/cook was absent and the manager was standing in the kitchen, as a result I fear we did not see the best of the food, but none-the-less here is a true and accurate account of what we experienced. The steak and ale pie from the a-la-carte menu was home made, and the filling very good, if the pastry was rather heavy. The pie had been rather over warmed up, and showed traces of scorching. The beef curry from the specials board was 'lovely', the rice which accompanied it rather bland for my West Indian wife's taste, I suspect that may be a cultural thing. The cajun chicken, also from the a-la-carte menu was VERY spicy. The chips were superb, and the 'peas' were petit-pois and perfectly cooked. Which makes a great change.Desert, however, was a big disappointment. The bread and butter pudding from the specials board was very poor. It was too dry, not enough of the integral custard mix, and one portion came out burned and inedible - no excuse for that, we were the only diners and the manager must have seen he was sending out a seriously sub-standard portion? On the plus side, the staff maintain (and I see no reason to doubt them) that the food is homemade, as distinct from being the awful bulk factory made freezer to microwave stuff one so frequently encounters. The portions were enormous. The prices were rather on the top heavy side, and the pub atmosphere left a lot to be desired, perhaps because we are a mixed race family? We do encounter a lot of hostility for being a white man with a black woman.Would I visit again? I doubt they will let me after this review. If you are on the road, it is probably worth a visit, but several miles before (or after depending on your direction of travel) on the same road (between the A3 and Midhurst) is the half moon at the village of Sheet which is far superior.

We ended here by accident as the pub we had planned to eat at looked terrible and we were certainly glad we chose to try the Half Moon. There is a good choice of starters under £5 & most mains are under £10 with daily specials. The portions are all very generous and I would be surprised if many could manage three courses! I had the chicken & leek pie which was the best pie I have had in a long time. Big chunks of fresh chicken breast in a tasty leek sauce and served with mash veg and gravy, just perfect comfort food for an autumn evening. The staff were very welcoming and the is a sofa at one end of pub to relax in. We will definitely go back.

We all had a different meal and all were very really good, with fresh veg to go with the mains and all served piping hot. Too full for a pud afterwards. The menu is varied and the usual sort of things you would expect from a pub. Gastro this isn't but that was what we wanted so it suited us fine.Friendly staff made this a pleasant lunchtime stop. One thing to be aware of is this pub isn't in the centre of Midhurst but just outside.

I have used the half-moon for well over a year now, and 'Not impressed' may or may not have noticed me among the 'loutish group' in the public bar. Better not to come again is my comment to him, he obviously is an upper class snob and drinks pre-dinner cocktails with his little finger sticking out. This is a pub for all and a lot of young, middle aged and pensioners come hear to enjoy the sfood, which is relatively cheap by local standards. Drink is not that pricey either which is why workers use the pub and meet their friends in the evening and at weekend. Service is usually good, busy times can mean a little wait but much less than other places I have been to. They do a lot of fund raising for various causes mostly initiated by the landlord (Dave) and those same people 'Not Impressed' called loutish!!! Good pub! Try it and see!

I came here with a group on 12 October 2013. There is a fair choice of food - but like another reviewer said - it is basic and has a boil in the bag sort of quickly put together feel to it. Tasted ok though. Good size portions. Not a bad price. The staff were not very attentive, they seemed more interested in attending to the public bar area round the corner, rather than the restaurant side where we were. My beer got half pulled then completely neglected till the woman re-appeared 5 minutes later and I reminded her I was still waiting for my drink. Yes, she'd been round at the other bar watching the lads playing pool.
