The Half Moon in South Oxfordshire

My friends and I have been visiting this pub every couple of months for a little while now we started going just after lockdown ended because it had such a nice big garden space and sheltered marquee too and felt very Covid safe. We now visit because we just love it the food is incredible really lovely Italian menu with lots of choice, the staff are soo friendly and the pub is beautiful. We will continue to have our girly catch ups here for a long time to come :)

Really great place! There is a huge garden in the back, with plenty of space between tables and some covered tables, so perfect for covid times (and the owners were also careful with masks, etc.). Owners were super friendly and the pizza was one of the best I've tasted in Oxfordshire. We came here for lunch during a cycle trip, but the place was so nice that we decided to stop again for cakes (which were delicious too!) on our way back :).

I really love this place, the pizzas are really good. We had take away pizzas during the stricter COVID restrictions and have eaten meals in the garden twice since.It is such a friendly place and the garden is huge, with a large area at the back where children can play without disturbing anyone else. There are covered areas close to the pub in the event of bad weather. They don’t take bookings you just turn up and there is lots of room for everyone.The pizzas are so good that I haven’t got round to trying the pasta but will one day. The desserts are also very good. Every single member of staff that we have met has been really friendly. It is certainly a relaxing experience.

We met with a group of friends for a leisurely outdoor lunch in the pretty village of Cuxham. The venue is ideal for families as there is plenty of space for children to let off steam, with even a badminton net.We enjoyed a selection of different pizzas and pasta dishes, all cooked to perfection, and it was a challenge which delicious dessert to choose to round off the meal. George ensured we were kept topped up with drinks and nothing was too much trouble.We'll certainly return!

Hands down the best pizza I have ever eaten! The restaurant is also very beautiful and the facilities are spotless. It’s between London and The Cotswolds, a perfect stop off for lunch. I would highly recommend this place, and will no doubt stop off on the journey home. It has a 5 star hygiene rating, and George was very friendly too. Great little find!

We were staying in the village for the week. Having had fantastic pizzas with Prosecco and a good bottle of red we decided to book again to sample the Pasta dishes - we were not disappointed! George and the team made us feel very welcome on both occasions. The Half Moon has a real authentic Pizzeria feel nit to be missed.

I found the Half Moon by chance looking for somewhere halfway between family members and couldn’t have been more pleased. The interior of the pub is lovely but it was a sunny day yesterday so we sat in the lovely garden. The menu is varied and we had pizzas and side salads and a Niçoise salad. The pizzas were excellent really thin and crispy and the salads did not disappoint. The service was friendly and efficient and setting was great and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this pub to anyone and we will definitely return. I just wish I lived closer!

Enjoyed a fathers day lunch here today! Came for the pizzas as heard great things. Service was friendly and the pub is very welcoming and clean. Food was really tasty x4 of us had pizzas and 1 of us had the meatball pasta. All very lovely, tasty and fresh. Thank you!

Without a doubt quite the best pizza in the area! The service is exceptional and the banoffee pie homemade too. I highly rate this wonderful pub the service and the greeting are second to none

Quite simply the nicest Pizza I’ve ever eaten in this country or abroad, We had the thin and crispy base and it was so light and tasty I could have eaten another!! Service was friendly and efficient so I would highly recommend giving the half moon a try if you like your pizza!

Went with friends and was greeted with the most amazing smells coming from the kitchen. We ordered starters and three different pizzas. It was the best pizza I have had in a long time! We ate outside and had friendly service from George.Would definitely recommend!

The atmosphere is simply lovely and the staff welcoming.However the service was pitiful, we waited over an hour for food.When it arrived , to call it service station quality would be an insult to service stations.If you do not eat, it’s probably worth a visit.That said we will not return, there are too many local options that are superb.

I'd heard great things about the Half Moon and wanted to recommend it to my Airbnb guests so three of us went yesterday for lunch to try for ourselves. What a treat! Quite simply the best pizza I have ever had: thin, crispy crust and generous toppings that go to the very edge of the pizza. My husband had a similarly epic pizza, while my mother had penne with chicken. We had a warm, friendly welcome and attentive service from George. I will definitely be recommending the Half Moon to my guests and will certainly be back.

We came for an Sunday evening meal away from the wind and rain. We'd heard good things but were taken to the next level by our experience. Perfect Italian food, the pizzas which of course are the main event are to die for! Lovely dough stretched thin, cooked to perfection and the toppings are indulgent but not heavy. We each had three courses and thoroughly enjoyed each one. Would love to come again if we're in the area.

Great food, nice vibes and very friendly staff. This is my local pub and I'm so glad to see that it has weathered the lockdowns well. Great to be back in there and enjoying a decent country pub once again.

This is a regular for us. Really good Italian food, kid friendly and a massive garden with space for kids to run and badminton net. Service always friendly and efficient. Highly recommended.

10 of us cycled out from Reading. Hospitality was great in the Patio Gazebo . Lovely coffee, cakes, Great Pizza and beer. Well worth a visit😊. We will be back soon

I recommend this lovely countryside pub serving Italian food. The service was quick, the food was delicious. The seating area outside was sheltered so it was convenient. Big garden for sunny days. Worth going !

Going to the Half Moon is always a treat. In pandemic times, of course we miss the warm family atmosphere of the pub’s interior. But even on a stormy day, sheltering under canvas, the food was well-cooked, and George the waiter managed to make us all feel very welcome. We’re very lucky to have a place like this just a short ride from our home.

On May Day I took my wife out to enjoy the wonderful English countryside and as we drove through the picturesque village of Cuxham we noticed this beautiful pub and we stopped just to check it out. We've been welcomed by George. We had a friendly chat, showed us around the back garden of the pub and the menu and on our way out he offered us a couple of red eggs for the Orthodox Easter that was on the 2nd of May. We promised to come back some time in the future... but we went back on the same day and sat in the wonderful back garden overlooking the Chilterns. The service was excellent, the staff very friendly and the food was great. What more can you ask from an outing at a country pub like that? On our way out we promised to go back! And we will. We thanked George for making us feel welcome from the very first moment.

Simple Italian menu- mainly pasta and pizza. Well cooked and served. Friendly and prompt service without being intrusive. Family friendly.

Perfect stop in the middle of a lovely walk beneath the Chiltern ridge. Delicious food and beer, rapid and friendly service. Lots of outdoor space.

Fantastic atmosphere, such a friendly welcome .Incredible 5* service from George and all the team is always to the highest standard.Italian food at it's best, the menu is amazing, pizza's are special..The large far reaching garden is an absolute delight, overlooking South Oxfordshire countryside.Children will love the garden space to run around, outdoor badminton is a treat, much enjoyed.A hidden Gem that must be visited to be appreciated.

Found this beautiful pub just before lock down, food is top quality the beer is kept very well but the welcome from the owners was and still is amazing. They are so friendly and genuine and make your visit special. The pizza's are delicious and the garden is amazing.this is our new local, even though we live in High Wycombe! 5 stars.Jo and Adam.

Saw a fresh painted sign saying "pizza garden" in the middle of a lovely village. So I stopped and to my delight this country pub had a huge garden at the back with well spaced tables in the sun and others under cover.Pizza was delicious and service excellent with friendly staff. Thanks George!I don't normally do reviews as now the secrets out and it may get too busy for my liking, however places like this deserve our support following lockdown.

On a rare day off work, we thought we would make the best use of a beautiful day and went to the Half Moon for lunch. George gave us a very warm welcome and at once we felt very comfortable. We we sat in the spacious well kept garden with our drinks and eventually managed to choose 2 pizzas from the huge range, it was hard to decide as they all sounded delicious! As we waited, which wasn't very ong, we sat listening to the bird song and watching Kites fly overhead. The pizza's did not disappoint, we shared our plates as both were jealous of the other. George was amazing, taking orders, serving drinks and food , clearing tables, he made it look effortless, and all the time with a big smile on his eyes! Will definitely visit again.

I led a group of cyclists from our local group here for the first time today. It has extremely spacious garden with plenty of tables all spread out, today the garden was a real sun trap although tables are available under cover. It has a good selection of tasty cakes which were very reasonable, the staff were very friendly and couldn’t do too much for us. We will definitely go back

Easy to cycle past but great place to stop. Order at the window and sit out the front or round the back in a beautiful garden. Really friendly. Lovely coffee and cake (and pizza!). Great pit stop. Bike friendly.

Second day of pubs being back open and we checked out our local. The weather was cool but the covered section in the beer garden was perfect. New additions to the menu were interesting and the service as fab as we’ve come to expect. Pizza and a pint only improved by sunshine and smiles. Excellent lunch thanks to George and Vaska.

The Half Moon is a very nice, fairly unchanged pub in rural Oxfordshire. The publican is very welcoming and friendly as are the staff. The serve very well-kept beer and really excellent pizzas. There is a very nice garden out the back in the summer. A great destination for a meal with friends or family.

We love this little place for our favourite pizzas, the atmosphere and the warm welcome. The restaurant sells Italian food although not run by Italians but just as good.

Love this place. The pizzas are delicious! Would recommend other dishes too, such as the Pulli Pesto. The staff are lovely, really friendly and welcoming. Overall, a great restaurant and well worth repeat visits!

A repeat visit for lunch and the pizzas are just as great, thin and crispy, very tasty and we all ate every slice. Lovely friendly staff who are really good when we want to change what's on our pizzas. A good selection of beers and wines, all in all a thoroughly delicious lunch enjoyed by all of us. Macedonia rules when it comes to pizzas!

We are regular visitors despite the 37 mile round trip. My partner highly rates their pizzas and other pasta dishes are equally as good. The beer is always well kept. The ambience is informal, cosy, friendly and relaxed. There is always a bit of friendly banter between staff and customers. In summer, the large well kept garden is a bonus. The only down side is that I can't enjoy more of their very tasty beer, because I have to drive home!

It’s a big claim it it might just be true. In fact, having visited Italy quite a lot it might just be the best pizza outside Italy. Great food, lovely people and good prices. It doesn’t get better.

We’ve had a few takeaway pizzas from the Half Moon over lockdown, and they’ve never disappointed, so we thought we’d try it out for a sit in meal. I have to say, we weren’t disappointed whatsoever! The atmosphere was lovely, the staff (George) were very polite and efficient! Our pizzas and fontina garlic bread came out lightening fast and our beers went down incredibly smoothly - plus a very reasonable price for an excellent experience all round! We’ll definitely be back!

We phoned here last minute after walking out of another establishment and were happy to find friendly and helpful staff who had a joke with my friend and I. The food was aamazing and a good price. I asked for no tomotat sauce (allergy) on my pizza and the waiter suggested bechamel instead and said "If you don't like it, we'll change it for free". I loved it!£25 for 3 courses and a soft drink.Highly recommended.

This place just goes from strength to strength. Even with COVID restrictions, it’s warm and friendly, providing some of the best pizzas, not just locally but anywhere. They are just fantastic !I can not recommend this pub enough. We are regulars, well we would be as we live in the village, but it’s no good being a local if what you produce isn’t up to scratch. The Half Moon is a win-win. Great food, great staff.

It was just OK. Its pizza. Very noisy group of 8 girls in a small area spoilt the atmosphere. Beer good, food just OK. IMHO overrated

What a fantastic place and quite simply the best pizza I have ever tasted. The owner was extremely welcoming and made lots of time for us. I can’t recommend this place highly enough. I’ve only given it 5 stars because I can’t give 6.

Stopped here for an early dinner during a trip to Watlington. Country setting with large sheltered garden at the back. The owner was extremely friendly and welcoming, all smiles, just what you want when going somewhere new. Good home made pasta - didn't try the pizza but looked lovely and fresh. Many thanks

I stopped for a casual pint and was impressed with the place. Clearly popular for food and its garden in addition to the well-kept beers, it's a characterful place, sorted for covid-safety, and a very pleasant nook to be.

We were a party of 11, including 7 children! We were seated in a small area,just us and it was a lovely atmosphere.The staff couldn't do enough for us they were so attentive and friendly.The food was amazing both pizzas and pasta and although I personally didn't have a dessert they looked amazing and disappeared very rapidly!!!Good range of drinks to choose from too

First night staying in Cuxham and could not have hoped for a better find. Superb pub/pizzeria serving the tastiest food (best pizza I've had!). Friendly and welcoming team, who were clearly under pressure thanks to Mr Sunak! Although The Half Moon has a very large beer garden, we ate inside. The team is doing all it can to make dining as safe an experience as possible in these difficult times. If you are in the area I strongly re ommend you pay a, visit.

We met some friends for lunch today, what a just perfect restaurant! Really excellent pizzas, lovely friendly staff, good selection of drinks and all very reasonably priced. The menu is extensive and they make the pizzas just the way you like them and served up fresh straight from the oven. We found this lovely rural pub by searching TripAdvisor and it is only a few minutes from the M40 junction 6. We shall definitely not hesitate to go back again and again for the best pizzas we've eaten in ages and they've got a great garden!

Moved to the area just last November and have visited several times now, before and after lockdown. Just had lunch today with a friend and as always, food was lovely (had the caprini pizza and tiramisu) and service was great. Was welcomed by two lovely ladies and served by a blonde gent, I'm sorry I don't know their names! But thank you for making us feel welcome and safe, and mostly for serving up delicious food!

The pizza menu is very good. Don’t expect the same choices as in the high street chains, these are much more original with peppers, goats cheese , tuna, spinach, artichokes, spicy beef and hot green peppers as just some of the ingredients available. There are also some pasta dishes.We had a good welcome on arrival (7.30 on a Wednesday)and sat inside. The drink order was taken quickly, but sadly, that was the end of the good service. We knew that they closed at 9.00pm and were just about to go up to the bar and ask, when at 8.45 out starters finally arrived. By this stage we could only see 2 other diners in the restaurant!To make matters worse, the main courses arrived 5 minutes later whilst we were still eating our starters! There was no apology or explanation for the delay, had that occurred I might have been tempted to give a 4 star rating but in all honesty I think a rating of ‘average’ is being kind.Shame, because it could have been so much better.

Highly recommended. Gorgeous garden and delicious food - lots of choice for vegetarians too. They handled social distancing well and we felt very safe. Friendly staff and great service. Five stars overall!

We stop for a meal on our way through. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. We eat the the large garden to the rear which was great for the children. The food was superb we could not fault it. Pizzas were a hit.

We had such an amazing experience during our cycle touring weekend there! Outstanding hospitality, super friendly staff paired with delicious food and a spacious sunny garden, this refuelling stop was more we could have wished for, highly recommended!

Dropped in for a family lunch on way back from London. We both had a pint of Moretti which was a touch flat, but drank it anyway. We all had pizza, which was one of the best pizzas I have ever had! The second pint of San Miguel was much better too. Great garden, and would be ideal for family's.

The building is probably a monument, with thick walls and very cozy atmosphere. It is very authentique and it gives a sense of warmth. The food is delicious and the desserts are so so so good, especially if you're a person with a sweet tooth!I will be definitely coming back here, especially because they have a huge garden in the back of the restaurant.

I have found this hidden gem a few months back and I've decided to give it a try. It has really tasty pizzas, its personnel was extremely friendly & professional and I am definitely going back once this covid mess is over!

We have both visited the restaurant and had takeaways from the Half Moon multiple times- the pizza is always absolutely delicious! So tasty and non-greasy. The pub is run by a lovely family who are always very welcoming and happy to help. Would highly recommend The Half Moon!!

Had pizza here twice now. Really good base, like proper pizza from Naples. Good fillings too. Lovely people, so kind and patient. Will be back here again, especially after the lockdown is over.

The pub is beautifully kept and although it was a damp dull Tuesday lunchtime it felt very cosy and the other diners were smiling and clearly enjoying their visit and the food. I had a pizza; I couldn't resist one after seeing the other diners who clearly knew the place enjoying their so much. My friend had a delicious fresh Caesar salad.

Visiting Cuxham. Called in The Half Moon for a drink in afternoon. Very quiet. Alexi very chatty and welcoming. Went back early evening, what a difference. Packed, ordered chicken wings for starter. Very nice. Pizza and lasagne with tricolor salad. Excellent. Everything fresh and home made. Tiramisu also home made and very good. Even coffee was lovely. Service was good, entire evening relaxed. Will visit again

We arrived at 7.30 on a Sunday. We’d fed two kids a three course meal and ourselves two courses in 30 minutes which was perfect to fuel up on our way home. Proper country pub in a charming location. Really good thin pizzas! All very happy diners. Thanks

Wooden beams, thatched roof and authentic Italian pizza. The atmosphere and food are hard to beat, and the the service is simply outstanding (friendly and speedy). We often make a last minute decision to go out for dinner and, despite it being typically busy, there is usually a table for two to be found. There is a good variety of pizzas on offer, and I have yet to be disappointed by my choice. The tiramisu is also the best I've tasted outside of Italy... and my girlfriend assures me the banofee pie is superb. Whether eating with Friends, as a couple, on the weekends or a just Wednesday night, I highly recommend that you check out this charming Italian restaurant.

We visited today for a 70th birthday celebration - food amazing and staff could not have been nicer. Extremely accommodating, friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Very reasonably priced and great pizza. Also dog friendly and a brilliant garden.

I have eaten here a couple of times now. The pizzas have a lovely home made taste and several different choices on the menu. Friendly staff and a separate area if you just want drinks. Best thing about this place (in winter) is the warm and cosy atmosphere.

We first visited on 23/12/19 to check out prior to planning a New Years Day walk with friends. We were so impressed by our Pizzas that we booked a table there and then.

New Year's Eve and a family walk on Christmas Common. We had planned to eat at the local pub but no space! Quick check on phone and found The Half Moon who had space. Four adults and two children slowing different choices. The good was truly amazing with the eleven year old declaring best good ever!! Cannot remember a time when we have been out and everyone loved their choice and all clean plates. The decor is a delight and staff so helpful and friendly. Would certainly hope to go back in the warmer weather. Thank you

We are a large family group of 15 from Herts & Glos and for the second year running we have met up at The Half Moon for a Xmas celebration- as last year the food was delicious and reasonably priced, the service was great, very friendly - we really enjoyed ourselves and plan to return again. Having chosen this restaurant based on its #1 ranking in Oxfordshire - it did not disappoint. We all had 3 courses which were all faultless and yummy. We all had pizzas which were fantastic and you must have dessert when visiting - the cheesecake was amazing. Staff were very friendly and attentive which created a cosy, relaxed atmosphere. We will be returning again when the weather gets warmer to experience the garden.

We’d actually nipped over to The Half Moon to pick up a voucher for a Christmas present and decided to stay for lunch. We had a muddy walk beforehand and built up a nice appetite. Great welcome and very friendly staff. Sensible prices too. Probably one of the best pizzas I’ve had in a long time - I normally get bored half way trough. Panacotta for puds was excellent as well. Will definitely go back and probably soon.

We visited today, a group of 6, and a dog. We were immediately greeted, by George, who then looked after us with the most excellent service and friendly demeanour.

We had dinner at the Half Moon last night. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the service was great and our pizzas were delicious. We enjoyed the experience and will definitely return.

In the most adorable old pub are a bunch of friendly women (I've never seen a man serving) who dish up the most lovely pizza. The Half Moon is a family staple for us.

Always great food here - we regularly come for pizzas and I reckon they're the best outside of Italy! A lovely location and always a warm welcome from Yasminka. It has a friendly atmosphere, excellent food and it's our favourite place to go in the area.

Cute restaurant and a 5* service. Tasty starters and very fresh too, Pizzas were made to perfection and George had the instinct to appear at the right time and giving privacy when needed. Finished the evening with some lovely deserts and coffee. Well worth the 100 miles drive and the overnight hotel nearby. Thank you George & Co.
