The Grog & Gruel in Highland

A very Scottish pub with friendly accommodating staff and good food. We went with our dog and 2 young children and felt very welcome. The menu is a little limited, but the quality of the food was good. We would definitely go again if we find ourselves back in the area

Casual, friendly bar in centre of town. Food was nice and plentiful. Restaurant upstairs is a bit more cosy. Will no doubt go again.

On a tour of Scotland we dropped into Fort William to buy gifts and get some lunch. Luckily we stumbled upon the Grog and Gruel. Nice choice of food and friendly staff. Good selection of drinks. I really enjoyed the Thistly Cross Whisky Barrel Cider. Dog friendly The dogs were impressed with the sausages. In fact they were really pleased as they seemed to get sausages everywhere we went to eat in Scotland. Keep up the good work, we shall return

Great spot, great ambiance, beer are golfs ans the burger are awesome. We recommand ! The team is also friendly and give good advices.

Disappointing. This used to be one of the best eating places in town. No more. It lacked atmosphere. The staff were a bit disinterested when serving the food. The food itself was average at best. The fish was not fresh and the “curly fries” straight from a packet were a cop out. Given the quality of the food it is very much overpriced. Won’t be back.

We visited the Grog and cruel for lunch, absolutely amazing, friendly and attentive staff throughout, the most tastiest steak and ale pie we have ever tasted, and very reasonably priced, eould definitely visit again,

Miserable staff, food OK but not very varied menu and definately overpriced. Very unwelcoming environment, don't think we saw a member of staff smile the whole time we were there

Grim, food overpriced, unappetising. Woman who served us was pleasant. All the time that we were there could hear a guy sitting at the bar swearing away

Food was good shame staff couldn't be bothered make hot drink we asked to be told machine had just been cleaned then another staff member went and made themselves a drink from Same machine seemed too much trouble for the guy behind the bar. It stated food till 9pm we went just after 7.30 and was told just in time for food.

Lovely little pub, excellent food and the staff were really friendly. Fantastic cosy atmosphere.

Had a soup and garlic cheese bread. Soup was out of a packet and the bread was half a par-baked baguette (not baked the rest of the way) with no garlic and a small handful of cheap “mozzarella-style cheese substitute” dumped on top. Overpriced and bland with a total lack of skill or love. Staff ok, but seemed more intent on chatting to each other than being friendly. If you were wondering why the pub is empty at lunchtime, then I think I may have found the reason. Try harder guys, it’s not rocket science.

Just went here for a couple of drinks when visiting fort William. Quite busy drinks and service were fine.

The waitress was really nice. The restaurant itself lacked a bit of atmosphere, but it was cosy next to the window. The food however was really bad. We had the bean burger, which was nothing special and the bean quesadilla which was very bad. The quesadilla just tasted like spicy tomatosauce and nothing else. We would not recommend coming here.

Nous avons pris des burgers (venison et black pudding), qui étaient très bons. Petit défaut : manquait un peu de sauce, mais ça n'a pas gâché notre repas. Nous avons mangé dans l'espace bar car il n'y avait plus de place au restaurant, mais c'était tout à fait convenable. Les prix étaient peut-être un petit peu élevés pour la qualité, mais rien d'effrayant. En résumé, bon repas dans un endroit agréable, je recommande !

Hervorragende Biere 🍺! Besonders hat mir das „Helles Glen“ geschmeckt. Zum essen in den ersten Stock gehen.

Des plats traditionnels et des bières servies à la pompe. Une adresse sympathique en plein cœur de Fort William. Une cuisine simple mais correcte.

We visited Fort William back in September and we loved the Grog & Gruel. They had the best cider (Thistly Cross whisky cask) and they even sell it in bottles for you to take with you. Our favourite bartender was Jay- he was very friendly and great at his job! We only ate (and drank!) downstairs, but the food we had was excellent. We can't wait to come back!

Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner last night, great service - naturally friendly. Great for our 4 year old daughter, who thoroughly enjoyed the pig shaped pizza!

Great pub with excellent restaurant attached above. "Seoulful Chicken" their Korean style chicken was very tasty.

Sur le site il est précisé que tout le monde peut venir et que s'il n'y a pas de place on nous fera patienter au bar en attendant qu'une table se libère mais ce n'est pas le cas. La salle de restau à l'étage était fermée. On nous a dit qu'il n'y avait pas de place et au revoir. Un homme occupait à lui seul 6 places. L'accueil ne correspond pas du tout à ce qui était annoncé.

The food is really overpriced for the quality that you get. The staff werent had workng and were quite rude to other customers. The drinks are really expensive. Not worth it

Wasn't the most inviting place I have ever been, felt like I was intruding when asking for a couple of pints of the same ale... probably more atmosphere buying beers from tesco and sitting at the train station.

Highly recommend. Food was delicious. Staff were friendly and super nice. Atmosphere was cozy and warm. Ciders were very good. We had a fantastic time

I had fish& chips,not good! Definitely frozen fish,didn't eat it,even my dog wouldn't eat it! Curly Fries,frozen out a packet! Husband had the steak pie,really unpleasant taste, unedible!!!! Not be returning ever,worse meal we have ever had! Total waste off money

Tasty food, dog friendly top-notch pub with a laid-back relaxed atmosphere.

We ate in the restaurant part upstairs and the food was decent. However, the staff seemed disinterested and not the friendliest. They took our orders and never really came back to check on things after we got our food. They were also on their phones every chance they got.

This used to be the best pub in fort William. Great beers, food and atmosphere. Now..no atmosphere at all, in fact pretty empty. It was closing at 10pm on a Saturday night when everywhere else is busy. Whats gone wrong?

Het eten was zeer middelmatig, alsook werd er gelogen. Bijvoorbeeld: de gerookte zalm zou home smoked zijn, maar was dat overduidelijk niet. De hygiëne overall was echt ondermaats, de helft van onze groep had die nacht ook buik en maag klachten. Het personeel en met name de ‘baas’ op dat moment was echt vreselijk. Onvriendelijk, onbeleefd. Vrienden van de baas zaten er, die aan het vapen waren in het restaurant. De baas zat dan op dat moment de hele tijd bij de vrienden. Heel bizarre beleving. Ik zou zeker niet aanraden hier te gaan.

Sat downstairs in the bar. Oven was broken, but food was good. Plenty of veggie friendly items on the menu.

Good food, location and friendly staff but a bit extended waiting time for food (lucky we order starters before the main 😀).

We only ate in the bar as we had our dog with us. The first young lady I spoke to was very nice but the young man behind the bar was quite offhand in his manner towards me and I noticed to other customers! They say the food served in the bar is the same as they serve in the restaurant upstairs. I wouldn't say it was restaurant quality. I had the hogs breath chili nachos which were OK, nothing special. My daughter had the venison burger which looked very unappetising. She said it was dry and again, nothing special. The dog, however enjoyed his sausage! It's just a pub bar with no atmosphere to speak of. Wouldn't go again.

One of many pubs in Fort William with similar menus but - big plus - this one had 4 cask beers on tap. That's as many as Wetherspoons but it's much much nicer place to be. (4 cask ales is rare in Scotland, and these were excellent). We ate there too in the downstairs bar, which is actually a nicer place to eat than the upstairs restaurant. Food was good, especially the steak and ale pie. Everything seems to come with curly fries which were not as tasty as normal French fries. But that's a minor point. Feels like a proper pub inside. Would recommend

Mediocre on their best day. Staff ignored customers, both those seated and people who came in (and then walked out), food was direct from a can, and atmosphere was depressing. The kind of place that could only survive in a tourist town. Go elsewhere.

Das Ambiente des Restaurants ist eher unscheinbar - aber das Personal ist erstklassig! Sehr gut organisiert, schnell und kompetent (auch bei der Weinauswahl) und trotz der großen Nachfrage super freundlich!

Typische schottische Bar mit Restaurant, wir hatten beide Fisch, qualitativ hochwertig und sehr lecker. Bestellt und bezahlt wird an der Bar, guter Service, empfehlenswert. Damentoilette ist im 1. OG, steile Treppe.

Worst experience ever!!! Were looking for place to eat while our tour bus was waiting. Walked in the place, due to nice, authentic atmosphere and nice menu. We sat at the table, really dirty one. Came waiter, placed menu on dirty and wet table and gone... We were really limited in time and made choice of dishes even before entrance to the place. Half an hour we were trying to draw the attention of stuff, we were waiving with hands, stood up, tried to call them, 2 guys and a girl were looking at us, passing by but no one will take an order. We had to walk away.

You go to Scotland and you want to eat and have a beer in a pub. This is your place. Great atmosphere with kind stuff. Good food. I would go early as it fill up quite rapidly. Would recommend

Food was not good and expensive for what it was.

Unfortunately went here for dinner within the serving time, when ordering drinks we were told by one the barmen, yes it was fine to order food. We went to choose our meals whilst awaiting our drinks. A very short time later, still within food serving time, we were then told on three separate occasions by differnt bar staff, they were now too busy to serve food. Yes, whilst it was quite busy, we were left feeling we'd wasted time purchasing drinks only to be told this, contradictory to the initial information we had been given. However, we accepted this, so two of our party of four left to find somewhere else to eat whilst the others finished their drinks. The manager then came over and asked if we were eating and had we ordered yet. We informed him his bar staff had told us they were too busy. He was perplexed and understandably annoyed as he was the manager and had never passed on any such instructions to his staff. He offered us food but by this stage our friends had located somewhere else. As a result of his unreceptive staff, they lost well in excess of £100 in revenue. Not a good advert for Highland hospitality.

Just the sort of pub you'd expect on the main drag of Fort William. Pleasant and helpful staff. Food was very good, and the atmosphere was quite inviting.

This place had some niiiice food! We got a haggis burger (with fries), classic nachos, a vegetarian haggis and smoked salmon. All dishes were delicious! When we first got to the door there was a big sign up saying that all tables were taken so we almost turned away. Fortunately my friend really wanted to eat there so we asked upstairs and were told that even though there were no tables left upstairs we could still sit down at the pub/bar area (there was lots of seating and tables!) and we could order the same food from the counter. So we did! And I'm so glad we did! Super nice food, and veggie options too! Parking wasn't available nearby due to this place being on a high street/walking street area, but you can get paid parking about a 10min walk away. Overall we really enjoyed this place and would definitely visit again! Don't listen to the sign that says no tables left!

Good food. I sat downstairs as dogs are only allowed in the bar not restaurant, so can’t comment on table service upstairs but the service at the bar was quick and efficient with good banter. The place was absolutely heaving, but good food was coming...

Pas top. On a vu mieux ailleurs pendant notre découverte de l’Ecosse et ce pub n’est pas le meilleur qu’on ait testé. Accueil pas très souriant, local vieillot et déco pas vraiment typique du coin, aucune ambiance (même pas de musique locale), cuisine façon cantine sans saveur et cher pour ce que c’est. Le fish and fries c’est du poisson surgelé grassement frit tout comme les frites, le Burger c’est un pain sec avec un steak sans sauce ni condiment avec des frites surgelées (16 £….). Venez y boire mais pas y manger.

Venus pour dîner. Arrivée à 20h30,la cuisine vient de fermer. On s'est fait jeter dehors à 21h15 alors qu'il est indiqué une fermeture à 22h. À éviter, il y'a d'autres pub beaucoup plus sympa à Fort William !

Lovely pub for drink at to meet up with friends. And also to have a bight to eat. Food is good cutlery and glasses are clean. Nothing more you could ask for. I’ll be back.

The service is so-so and the food wasn't as described (the chilli said it came with guac, salsa, and a salad, and was missing all three). For £13.95, this isn't really excusable. However, it's somewhat redeemed by the fact the food did come quickly and...

Traditional pub. I had the Wild Boar and Haggis burger which was pretty good to be fair. The others burgers also got decent praise. The folk who ordered the pies were less impressed. I can't comment on that. If I were to be super picky, I would serve hi one made fries rather than the curly ones that I think are bought in. Like I said "super picky". Reasonable choice of beers on tap. Staff were friendly and helpful. Dog friendly. Reasonable price. Happy days

Fish and chips was smakeloos. De chestnut pie apart, maar niet bijzonder. Zo'n beetje enige restaurant waar nog plek was om te eten.

Me & my son had a fantastic meal here, the best foot long chilli dog I've ever had & my son loved that his meal came with curly fries. Would highly recommend & will revisit next time I'm in the area.

The best burger I’ve ever had - haggis in the burger! Chilli was also really good but my partner had that one. Really busy as it’s got great grub! What was needed after the hike up and down Ben Nevis

Everytime I visit Fort William I ho here. Staff are amazing good is delicious and bonus it's dog friendly. Absolutely love it here
