The Greyhound Free House & Grill in South Oxfordshire

We usually visit The Greyhound for our anniversary, but we were a little hesitant this year, as AWT is no longer ‘in charge’. We need not have worried. The staff were lovely and the food and wine as excellent as ever!! (Albeit my favourite - the nut roast was not on the menu ho hum). Thoroughly enjoyed our evening.

Our first visit since AWT handed over the reins. Happily almost all the good things remain - cosy atmosphere, friendly service, the AWT burger and generous portions. It was the starters that really showed off the kitchen’s skills with the crab three ways the standout dish. Good burgers and lovely perfectly cooked halibut were highlights of the main courses, but the star turn was the fabulous crunchy wagyu chips. Perfect. Good selection of wines starting at about £22/bottle and epic gin list.

One of my favourite places to eat. The food is wonderful. We’ve been twice on the last month and loved it both times. Definitely try to tomahawk or the chateaubriand. Excellent wine and drinks menu and the staff are fabulous. Super friendly, more than helpful and always make you feel special. The first time we took our 9 year old and she thought it was brilliant. It’s got a super cosy atmosphere, perfect for a romantic night out. (Can you tell we love this place). Honestly don’t have a bad word to say about it. Well worth a visit, you won’t regret it.

We have always adored the greyhound and nothing has changed in that respect. The food is out of this world, the service attentive, fun and friendly. The quality is superb. As a person living in the local area there is still nothing that compares to the experience you have here. Well worth every penny spent. We can’t wait for our next visit! Great for lunch, dinner or Sunday lunch.

First time for my husband and I and it did not disappoint: just lovely and well worth booking ahead: friendly personal service with the perfect level of attention: fabulous roast lamb and pork with a nicely selected wine list and some excellent gins : far too full to try pudding but they did look very inviting

Fantastic Sunday lunch for Mums Birthday, faultless from start to finish, service exemplary, food perfectly cooked, the combo roast was amazing. Worth every penny and we will definitely be back. Thank you guys you are a great team.

We arrived for our table which wasn’t ready and were asked to wait at the bar. Not an issue until it became really crowded with nobody being seated. Service was slow and seemed a bit disorganised. Starters were really nice though with the crab being the highlight. Unfortunately our steak was awful. The tomahawk was barely cooked when we asked for medium/rare. We returned it and it was recooked. Full of sinew and obviously a cheap cut, badly cooked. A real shame as we’d been here before under previous ownership which was great. Hopefully just a bad night in the kitchen

Thoroughly enjoyable evening at The Greyhound, which is now under new management (since summer '23 I think). The menu has been simplified so the very expensive wagu options have disappeared but the choice of different cuts of beef (T-bone, Chateaubriand, ribeye etc) remain. Good choice of starters and the steak was perfectly done. Very attentive staff and management and whilst it wasn't a cheap evening I felt it reflected the quality of the food and experience. Definitely worth going again.

Limited menu & very pricey even though this was a special occasion. The Chateau Briand £52 ordered as medium was very rare but the 6oz fillet steak £36, ordered medium rare arrived well done - no pink at all. I probably would not go again.

Never been here before which is a shame as it's a great local pub to have a meal. Couldn't fault it in any respect. Very friendly service from the manager and the room is a very inviting place to sit. excellent value and great food.

The gorgeous setting of The Greyhound did not distract from the sumptuous food. Great fish menu which was super tasty and good healthy portions. All washed down with plenty of staff who buzz around to make sure glasses don’t run dry. No excuse needed to come back.

We visited this restaurant after a 26 mile walk, they kindly held the table for us as we were running slightly late. Food was great however staff were abrupt and unwelcoming, we felt rushed and as though our custom wasn’t welcome. Won’t be hurrying back.

Great atmosphere and attentive service. Burgers were great but the Dover Sole fell well short of expectations and in comparison to other quality restaurants ie: The Ivy.Greens and potatoes were fine but the sole itself was the smallest portion you could imagine..same size as a 1/2 piece of very thin toast. Delicious but really set a new standard on the smallest fish portion. It’s a shame that the evening will be remembered for the Dover Sole which became the talking point rather than the rest of the food and ambience which was great.

Well…Just back from another lovely evening at The Greyhound. This is a restaurant with a great relaxed vibe. As expected the food was fabulous. Not over fussy and full of flavour. Staff as usual were friendly, attentive and welcoming. The perfect end to our evening was the Nespresso Martini.Highly recommended for a special evening, relaxed evening with friends, or a romantic date night. We will be back again soon.

Absolutely fab experience in every way. Beautiful drive to get to Peppard and such a beautiful setting when you get there. Ambience is amazing, service par excellence (Joshua, Vinnie etc!) and the food is just stunning. Ribeye with peppered sauce, roast hake, mixed grill - all just perfect! Strawberry pannacotta, bread and butter pudding to die for. AWT’s wife even spoke to us briefly (with a half promise of a glimpse of AWT himself - didn’t happen as he was obviously too busy overseeing quality control of dishes which he excels at!) We just loved everything - faultless! And note to Jay - I really am his number one fan after her (his wife)! Amazing team and we can’t wait to go back - highly recommended!

2x 50th birthdays - best ever service, care, attention and most beautiful food. Wouldn't even want to find any fault to share, because honestly this place deserves success and the joy they bring their diners. Booked again already for another occasion - can't wait to return.

Booked this place for 6 friends staying near Henley in need of a good Sunday Roast and this place did not disappoint. Excellent food, very good service and worth a visit, but you will need to book as very popular!

From the moment we entered the venue we felt very welcomed and the staff were so attentive. I cannot fault the customer service it was exceptional.The food and drinks were very good 10/10. Will definitely visit again! Josh was an amazing host definite asset made our experience very personal and positive worth every penny.

Great to finally be back inside The Greyhound after a long covid hibernation. As usual fantastic food & great staff.

Absolutely fabulous! Everything was great, the outdoor summerhouse with its cosy rustic ambience, candles, salvaged pictures, halogen heaters, cushiony sofas, rugs, and large table with space to spread out was a delightful place to sit and have a family reunion, and from the minute we arrived in the beautiful lush green and blossomed garden with the babbling water we were made to feel welcome by the wonderful staff. Food and drink was delicious, service impeccable (loos wonderful!), everything so clean and well thought out, thank you everyone, we will return.

I’m a regular visitor to the Greyhound and on Sunday enjoyed another superb lunch at the finest gastro pub in the Thames Valley. The garden and outdoor decking are beautifully done and only matched by Hurley House, the service team are exceptional and the food was even better than usual. The Roast lunch was simply the best I’ve had in a long time, served beautifully on an oversized square plate, delicious tender beef, exceptional roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding with a jug of extra gravy. The plate had a fantastic medley of delicious vegetables, cauliflower cheese, roasted onion, roasted parsnips, a mix of spring greens, carrot and squash medley. Anthony please never change this outstanding plate. My partner had the Za’atar Coated Lamb Cutlets and said they were delicious, followed by a delightful Sticky Toffee Apple Tart Tatin, Vanilla Ice CreamWe will be back soon.

Great service, delicious food!! ,We had the duo fish starter of fried squid and crab cakes, as a main we both had the hullumi burger, both absolutely delicious! The combination of the perfectly cooked hullumi with the squash and spices worked really well, the toasted buns, the triple cooked chips and homemade mayonnaise, all absolutely delicious!!. I would definitely go back to try some of the other items on the menu!!

This is one of the jewels in the Henley on Thames area thanks to AWT and his great team. During the recent restrictions, the Greyhound has gone for idea of the "2 Go" brunch which is run from a very smart mobile kitchen which is nicely located in the front car park.I have been impressed by the simple choices of baps and buns with choices of dry cure bacon, Cotswold sausage, avocado (feta & marmite), black pudding (with apple and free range bacon) and a creative 'Texan Dog' (with avocado, a salsa and soured cream and jalapeno) - perhaps not for me on a Sunday morning! But the 'add-ons' are really good for a pick & mix concept - a fresh egg or the dry cure bacon or sausage, cheddar etc which are pretty irresistible. I find the combination of sausage, egg and bacon a Sunday morning essential. The thing is, as I discussed with Isaac who is in charge of the el fresco cooking there, having high quality ingredients is the absolute key to a proper English breakfast - exemplified here with Clarence Court eggs, dry cured bacon and the legendary Cotswold sausages. Those are the staples for me, but the other ideas look good - just not my personal favourites. I do think that this a good concept and pretty imaginative for the situation we are in. I am very particular about cleanliness and the fully kitted-out stainless steel cooking area and servery look really reassuring in that respect.The thing that has always impressed me with The Greyhound is the friendliness of the staff and that is to the fore with Harry and Toby doing a great job in making sure that the likes of me leave as happy bunnies. I look forward to the operation opening in full again when things are a little less restricted. In the meantime, this is just the job for me! And great value for money.

My mum really wanted a takeaway from The Greyhound (her favourite place to eat) for her lockdown birthday and they did a fab job! We were given a time to turn up and the food was ready exactly on time. Totally delicious - I personally would recommend the BBQ Steak Sandwich and a side of coleslaw. Because we were having a birthday meal we were collecting for 3 households (so we could Zoom and eat together) and they organised it into separate bags so it was really easy for me to drop off. Great experience - and I love your new sign at the entrance!

We have been to this restaurant a few times before and returned for a family meal on Christmas Eve. We were delighted that we were still in Teir 2 and able to go for our much needed family get together.The staff were charming, attentive and friendly and the food was delicious.As this visit was during COVID-19 all protocols were observed and we felt comfortable to be in the restaurant. Well done to everyone involved in creating a lovely ambience within the rules and for enabling us to have a ‘normal’ family evening out. The haggis & black pudding starter was delicious as was the beef stroganoff and of course the decision on desert was a difficult one. However my favourite of the night was my first ever Expresso Martini - so good I had two of them. That you to everyone at The Greyhound for making our Christmas Eve feel normal.
