The Green Housekeeper Cafe in South Lakeland

After a dip in Lake Coniston, we happened to stumble across this amazing cafe. We were so indecisive on the menu as there were so many options that looked delicious (quiches, wraps, toasties, rolls, soup, jacket potatoes and breakfast dishes). The owner was lovely to all customers and said she could make something special for people if they'd like! I also loved the cute little knitted tea cosies. We sat outside in the sun in a lovely garden out back (with a great view of the mountains!). I don't ever leave trip advisor reviews, but genuinly this one hit the spot. Enjoy xox

Stopped for a quick lunch after a wet walk on the hill. Lovely Granary roll with chicken and a very hot Latte. Quick service and nice staff.

Excellent customer service. Excellent food and drinks. Kids and parents fully satisfied. These people know how to run a cafe.

Best cooked breakfast I’ve had in a long time. Lovely thick slices of toast, generous portions, lovely bacon and sausage, and lovely friendly staff. I will definitely come back here!

Lovely ham roll served with salad & crisps & lovely latte. Service was great as always. The food is always good here, as is the service. The outside seating area is great in the warm weather. Will definitely return.

We had the most delicious full English breakfast, tasty not greasy, with very helpful service. Thoroughly recommend!

Popped in on a beautiful sunny day to find a warm welcome and great service/food. Cannot rate highly enough. Really tasty meals and snacks. We shared a welsh rarebit which was delicious. Will go back in the autumn without doubt.

Lovely little cafe with a friendly happy vibe, and great food choices!Great veggie options and a couple of vegan choices (the menu notes one of the 3 soup options will always be vegan)I also clocked a vegan cake option too. Hubs had the special pulled pork bap, and I had the veggie quiche with salad - both very happy and good portions. Whilst we were both pretty full, we couldn’t not have a scone so shared one which was delish. Will defo be returning as lots more to try on the menu and from the delicious looking cake cabinet!

We arrived hungry after a morning on the lake. The menu had something to offer each of us. The staff were helpful and friendly. No issues with my substituting an item on the breakfast. We ordered our food and sat outside in a nice, quiet space away from the road. Our cuppas arrived quickly and our food wasn't far behind. The portions were very generous and my breakfast tasted lovely. The price was good. I would definitely eat here again and recommend this place.

Warm welcome on a warm day! Stumbled across this by chance but was such a friendly welcome and the free flake thrown in to our ice cream sweetened the experience

Such a warm welcome! Hospitality at its best. Oozing with comfort food and plenty of it. Scrumptious home cooked food and gluten free is never a problem (even delicious home baked cakes....yes and not the usual chocolate brownies) The only problem might be getting a table.

It is a little on the pricey side but the rarebit here was delicious. Generous pot of tea and a nice ambience despite the looming 2nd lockdown.

We’ve just enjoyed a fantastic lunch at this café. The lady was extremely attentive to all our requirements and the food was absolutely gorgeous. There’s a great choice of tasty soups all home-made and lots of other delicious things to choose from. This is how all cafés should be. Well done. We would highly recommend and if we return to Coniston we would definitely return in a heartbeat.

I had previously written a critical review of The Green Housekeepers Cafe, not because of the food or service (which were very good) but because the food was served in plastic containers due to Covid and on the day of my visit there was also a problem with flies. I have since removed this review as the owner has taken on board the feedback and now serves the food and drink in crockery, which makes for a much better experience. The owner clearly cares about her customers enough to respond politely to each review and also take feedback seriously (where others may be defensive). This is a real positive in my book and we will surely return.

Lovely little cafe. Extremely good food but with a limited menu due to the pandemic. Food and drink served in/on disposal plates/cups which may put some people off. Lovely friendly service. My husband and I will certainly be visiting again.

Had 2 cream tea. Came on cardboard chip tray to eat off. And cardboard cups, to drink from, very disappointed. Scones, Coffee and tea lovely and fresh. Presentation let it down. No need even during covid.

Pequeño café, ambos tenían pan tostado era muy bueno en general. Sin embargo, no había platos y las tostadas se servían en papel de aluminio y las bebidas en vasos de plástico de un solo uso. No estaba claro si estos eran reciclables.

Paré aquí para un almuerzo muy necesario. Nos recibieron calurosamente, disfrutamos de una enorme taza de té (¡con un acogedor!) Y una tostada de queso épica. Un pequeño gran café en el pueblo, bien ubicado, ya 10 minutos a pie de la orilla del lago. Gran variedad de comida y tartas caseras.

Un grupo nuestro (12 personas) estaba acampando en el área y pasó a encontrar este lindo y pequeño lugar.Sopas, pan casero, mantequilla, wrap, desayuno inglés, té crema con mermelada de fresa casera - ¡increíble! El servicio fue muy amable y cálido, pero aún así profesional, nos hizo sentir muy bienvenidos. Volvería de nuevo en cualquier momento.

Have just been into this little cafe, Gill was so friendly and welcoming. We had the fruit scone with jam and cream and a cheese scone with pickle. Both were very good. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Cafe food can be very simple but brilliant when done well. Fantastically fresh and imaginative the Matt's special - Bacon, chicken, cheese with a barbeque sauce melted over toasted white cob possibly the tastiest thing I've ever eaten...

Lovely & warm on a cold, wet day. Homemade soup & bread was lovely, with plenty of bread. Friendly efficient service. Would definitely return.

After a wet and bracing walk up to the coppermines, we were welcomed into the cafe to warm up with a delicious hot chocolate and homemade cakes. We loved the decor of the cafe, slate boards showing their menu and maps of the local area. The furniture is also lovely quality.

Friendly and good service. High standard of home made food. Cyclists welcome and you can see your bike through the window.

We called by for a hot drink mid morning. Fairly busy but there was a table near a window. If it had beeen alter we would happily have ordered a lunch there.

I really enjoyed my visits to the Green Housekeeper Cafe on 2 occasions. Great coffee, lovely selection of cakes, and a good choice of warm and filling soups. A great place to come and recharge after a day on the fells or on your bike. The staff were particularly friendly, welcoming and helpful. What more can you ask?

We chose to come here because of the Trip Advisor rating - however, there were a number of small things that added up to make it a disappointing visit. it wasn't particularly warm inside, and no-one actually took their coats off. A sign said that orders would be taken at the table, but this proved not to be entirely true - as we waited, someone else came in and went up to the counter and placed an order (which we then did ourselves). Most of the menu was pretty reasonably priced. My partner had the Carrot and Ginger cake - which was a bit more expensive, but turned out to be nothing special - I had the Rarebit - the salad and coleslaw were very good - the rarebit itself was a good sized portion - the flavour was very intense though - I'd probably put in a bit more cheese and bit less mustard.Overall nothing dramatically wrong, but given the number of other cafes in Coniston, I wouldn't particularly seek this one out again.

This cafe is friendly, efficient and the food is excellent. Nothing is too much trouble and your requests are supplied with a cheery smile. Such a feel good experience.

Enjoyed a tasty late lunch of a pulled pork roll with salad and crisps, excellent.The soya latte I chose was nice and hot as I like it.This cafe does not accommodate dogs which for us is a welcome added bonus and means we will choose this cafe again when next near Coniston.

We happened on the Green Housekeeper Cafe almost by chance at the end of our holiday, and are so glad we did, having spotted it through checking Tastecard. It looked nothing special from the outside, but once inside it was a delight. The food looked so interesting, wholesome and inviting, we decided on a light meal rather than just tea and cake. We were given a really cheerful welcome and the interesting menu was offered flexibly with a 'can do' mentality. The food was great: delicious, fresh, homely, good quality and generous portions for hungry walkers, served promptly with a smile, despite a busy afternoon. We look forward to returning on our next visit to try some of the other dishes on offer: the variety of home made bread, as well as wholesome soups and mega-scones all looked most enticing. Thankyou and keep up the good work!

I simply can’t praise this Cafe enough, quirky, Unique and with superb food what else can one ask for! The Scones were sublime and my son said it was the best pulled pork roll he had ever had.

Nos detuvimos aquí mientras visitábamos el área de Coniston. El café tenía un menú grande e interesante, buenos precios y opciones más que suficientes para todos. Incluso ofrecen hacer para ordenar cualquier cosa que no esté en su menú. El café era acogedor, cálido y acogedor. Aquí obtuve un sándwich de ensalada de atún para 3, que consideré de buena calidad en comparación con otros. El dueño fue amable y servicial las dos veces que entré. Mi esposa tenía sopa para comer, en una ocasión y dijo que era excelente, con mucho pan y mantequilla. Ella también dijo que el dueño era muy amable. Regresaremos aquí. Buena comida. Buenos precios.

Normally too lazy to write reviews I felt I really had to after visiting the cafe on consecutive days.

Always a pleasant atmosphere with friendly, welcoming staff and good home cooked food at realistic prices. A great selection of goodies to suit all. Been back several times over the years and will continue to do so.

First morning at Coniston and our search began for a full English breakfast.

We stopped planning to only have a drink but the food was too tempting to not try. We settled on the Brocoli and cheddar soup which came in a large bowl with a delicious selection of breads. Other members of the party had a fruit scone again delicious and the fruit bread with cheese and apple. Would definitely stop again if we are ever in Coniston in the future.

Just stopped for lunch. We had a jacket potato with tuna mayo and smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on toast. Completely delicious and good value for money

Two adults and four kids thoroughly enjoyed a pulled pork roll, baked potato, cheese toasty, tuna salad, fruit cake & cheese and sausage bap all for under £40 including drinks. Friendly and quick service at 3pm after a walk around Old Man. One of the nicest places we’ve been. Would highly recommend.

We enjoyed the best cafe breakfast to date here. The full English was of excellent quality and very generous portion! The homemade bread really is second-to-none! Scrambled egg and mushrooms on toast were equally as filling and tasty. Service was super professional and friendly. Although there was a bit of a wait, it was well worth it and certainly acceptable given the busy nature of the cafe. Overall, AMAZING little cafe!

Really yummy lunch in busy cafe. Friendly service, we had the ‘Jayne’s Special’ - sourdough toast, roasted peppers and tomatoes with two poached eggs on top. Definitely recommend.

We first visited this place last year, where we had a warming savoury tea after a rainy walk in the fells. The staff, service and food were great. So knowing we were coming back to the Lakes this week we had it as a must visit again after our walk up the Old Man. And again we weren't disappointed. Savoury scones, superb cake, generous portions and the same outstanding service. Treat yourself and pay a visit!

Too wet for the camping stove so a great cuppa from this café was required. We didn't eat there but the breakfasts looked amazing! Friendly staff.

Lots of great choices to eat. Very friendly, helpful service. Relaxing, calm atmosphere. Some original,fun touches to decor and display. Original food options available too. I had the full English Breakfast. It was amazing. My family all enjoyed their scrumptious food too. Choices included: Poached eggs on roasted peppers with sourdough toast, bacon and scrambled eggs on toast with cheese on top. All delicious and kept us going all day!

I had a lovely breakfast with excellent coffee here this week. Staff were friendly and I can highly recommend the 'special' (scrambled egg, bacon and cheese on sourdough, with the cheese melted under the grill). Will head straight back when I'm next in Coniston. Thank you :-)

My partner and I eat here regularly; a couple of times a month. Often play with idea of getting something else but always end up having full breakfasts, one veggie. The veggie sausages are not what you would expect but are absolutely awesome. Served with thick toast, we always leave feeling stuffed. Staff are always super friendly, and go to great lengths to meet dietry requirements and requests. See you soon!

Dont judge by appearance, this place is all about great tasting, well portioned good value food. Both Mrs and myself very much enjoyed eating here.

Had a nice cream tea today, unfortunately only plain scones as fruit ones had all gone, this was rectified by the lovely home made raspberry jam. Had aa tea and coffee.

This place (& it’s staff) is a real find. The food is excellent all cooked fresh to order - BUT - what really makes the place (& she’s worth her weight in gold) is the young lady who takes your orders. She is AMAZING (from the old codgers who walked to Hodge Close Trail)

This cafe is nearly opposite the Ruskin Museum. I saw the cafe when we came out of the museum but we wanted to see nearby Brantwood which was Ruskin's home before eating. We came back to this cafe after visiting Brantwood and I am glad that we did. I ordered the full English all day breakfast and my wife had beans on toast topped with a poached egg. Both meals were very large and came with thick sliced toast. The tea came in a tea pot with a cosy - nice touch. The staff were lovely and very friendly. The cost was reasonable and the service fast. Well worth a visit if you are in Consisting.

What a gorgeous little cafe. I love the rustic look. The staff welcome you on arrival which is lovely. We ordered two breakfasts which were superb, the homemade bread was absolutely delicious and the meat was fantastic quality. The tea cosys on the pots were super cute too! Loved our visit.

Having gone to the Ruskin Museum (nearly opposite) with the kids were looking for somewhere to eat and came across this cafe. Was a great find as soon as walked in got great service , a friendly feel, a varied menu and lots of cakes !

Looking for something tasty for a later lunch we wandered into this cafe (it was right next door to our B&B;) for some scones and coffee. Both were excellent and the scones came with homemade jam - strawberry and vanilla which was gorgeous!

Stopped off for lunch after looking at lots of boring menus on othr cafes. The premises don't look promising but the fantastic food, lovely staff and generosity of the portions are what counts. A pleasure of a lunch stop.

Called in for a light lunch after a walk into Coniston. The staff were friendly and welcoming when we arrived, informing us that the menus were fastened to the back of the chairs, and there was a large specials board on the wall. We ordered a pot of tea for two which soon came complete with tea cosy and extra hot water. I ordered the rarebit which turned out to be two huge slices of sourdough bread topped with cheese and red onion mixture, as well as a huge amount of freshly prepared mixed salad. My husband ordered the veggie chilli and jacket potato which again was a bit of a plateful with salad and butter. All in all it was a fantastic lunch, and well worth a visit. Just make sure that you're hungry!!

Called in twice as a food stop on a bike ride. Both days the service was friendly and the food excellent. I’m vegetarian and the choices were good. My friend said the pulled pork sandwich was the best ever. Coffee was spot on too.

We visited today for a family breakfast before a boat trip on coniston water and it was excellent! The staff were really welcoming and friendly-they are happy to help in any way they can offering more tea etc if we needed it. The lady that took our order spoke really nicely to our 2year old daughter to take her order. When the breakfast arrived it looked amazing with fantastic portions-everything was nice & hot having been freshly prepared for us! All items are very reasonably priced-would highly recommend this little gem!!!

We have just returned from a family road trip to the Lake District. On one of our days out, we stopped off at Coniston to admire the scenery and find something to eat for a late lunch. We are a family of meat eaters, a vegetarian and a vegan, so it's always good to find a cafe which caters for all tastes. We were greeted by a friendly waitress, who was evidently very busy, but took our order quickly. There's a wide range of food on offer from daily specials, to homemade soup, quiches, breakfasts, scones, cakes etc..Both my daughters ordered bowls of soup, which came with huge portions of home baked bread. The rest of us ate a dish called a Sylvia Special : scrambled egg and melted cheese with bacon on sourdough toast. Again the portion was generous. If I were really greedy, I would have liked to try some of the cakes and fresh scones with jam and cream. I'll just have to return another time. This cafe is opposite The Ruskin Museum, so would be worth a trip, even if you weren't returning from a brisk walk up/down The Old Man of Coniston!

Las raciones eran enormes y muy sabroso! ¡Tienen todo bien, hasta los detalles más pequeños! Mi rarebit se quemó ligeramente, aparentemente debido a una nueva parrilla. Se ofrecieron a rehacerlo, aunque yo estaba feliz de comerlo como estaba. Como disculpa, me ofrecieron una bebida gratis, así que tomé un café (también encantador). Comida y servicio al cliente increíble, y sin duda volvería otra vez!

What a find. Dropped in for lunch after a walk around Tarn Hows. Was originally going for Quiche of the day but there was a ten minute wait as it was still in the oven, and as I was hungry I opted for the Welsh Rarebit with bacon. My goodness, when it turned up it looked gorgeous, and it tasted equally as good. Nice side salad, coleslaw, and potato salad, again all home made. Staff were friendly, good seating and reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend.

We’re passing through coniston so had a look at Trip for somewhere to eat... reviews were good so gave it a try. We’re not disappointed, it’s a lovely friendly home cooked food cafe with a great choice of soups. We went for broccoli and cheddar soup with a smoked salmon and cream cheese roll and the rarebit. Both were very tasty and fulfilling. Well worth a visit. Open until 4pm

Very accommodating staff (Amazing Alice) and home-cooked food made a very cold stay up in the Lakes over the new year very warming. We had lunch and the toasted sandwiches where on home made bread of your choice and big - very welcomed by my 14 year old son. The soup was so popular, our initial choice was sold out, but the Brocoli and cheddar soup was brilliant and with a choice of breads, again all made on site, was filling and hearty. The only thing not home made was the soda bread but Alice can be forgiven as she said it was very hard to make...thank you guys for a lovely lunch and all the best for the future.

This one is worth a visit home baked everything and proper tea cosy's for the massive tea pots we all really enjoyed it. We had cream tea but I know other tables enjoyed the soup and other savoury dishes.

Popped in for a quite bite after a little hike in the Coniston fells.

This is a better than average cafe serving a wide range of comfort food and cakes- lots of vegan options. We had soup for lunch - homemade and well seasoned, followed by good scones. Portions are generous- you get a large basket of bread with the soup - personally i would rather have less but better quality bread. The service was brisk and efficient and the location is central to the town.We looked at several menus before choosing this and feel sure it was the best choice.

We had a lovely breakfast in Coniston - the selection for non meat eaters is great and we loved the full vegetarian, the bread served as toast was fabulous. Just marred a little as we were charged nearly £40 for two breakfasts and four drinks, however once it was pointed out it was rectified.

My husband and I stopped here after a big and tiring climb up Old Man Coniston. We enjoyed two delicious coffees, soup and a toastie. I felt compelled to write a review as we were both truly so impressed with the quality of the food that was served! Large and generous portions and extremely tasty too! We came back the following two days during our stay in Coniston as we loved it so much! Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the village - we only wish there was one just like it near us at home!
