The landlord was super rude and was not accommodating. He sits watching the cameras, and tells people off for leaning the bar. Asked if we could move a table a few feet to get a push in, and was told it was our own fault for not declaring on the booking. Food was average.

Have lived in the area for 19 years and have only been to this pub once years ago and never been back! That was until today. We had heard that the pub had been taken over and completely turned around. Whilst I was unsure how different the pub could be I and my family decided to visit the pub this afternoon to have a bite to eat and watch the rugby. What a great afternoon!!!! On arrival I was greeted with a big smile and good afternoon. by a barmaid I have never met before but made me feel like a regular. She then took my drink order and then took the time to help me find a table for my family who were arriving later and also talk me through the food ordering and menu. The pub was so clean and well presented as are the staff, all wearing a black polo style shirt with the pubs name on it. The food we ordered was fantastic value for money and amazing quality!! My son ordered the mixed grill for under £15 2 sausages , gammon, chicken,egg,chips loads more and also a Rump Steak. Most importantly that was cooked perfectly medium as my son requested. What was supposed to be a quick visit to a pub that was a "let's give it a try and see " ended up being a fantastic afternoon spent with family and now new friends in our new local pub . In short....A proper Pub run by a Proper land lord and land lady!! warm welcome, fantastic staff,good food at great prices. Loads to do with not only the food but also pool table ,darts,games machines,indoor and outdoor areas and also garden.

Very nice pub, with lovely graphics/photos highlighting the history of reading. Screens throughout for sport and pool table.

Went here on spur of moment for dinner. Although most tables were reserved, a table was found for us. The pub was busy but not noisy and in any event the dining area is separated from the main pub by the fireplace wall so there is no crowding. Outside it was a twinkly Christmas paradise with the lights. Inside it is beautifully decorated, not just the Christmas decorations, which were lovely, but the general decor. Food was very good, although my husband's cod came dressed with sprinkles of sea salt, which was not mentioned on the menu. Just something to keep in mind. My burger ( chicken) was large and good. It is nice to have table service for both food and drinks in a pub.

Have visited here several times, and it is a venue we take our visitors to when given the chance. The food is very tasty and reasonably priced, with a large selection of drinks available. The good companions is a great venue for families and for groups of people looking to have a good time. Booking not essential but recommended if you want a quieter sit down meal. I would recommend the pie, my wife would recommend the katsu curry.

Very welcoming to me an my family (18 of us!) on Boxing Day. Thank you letting us reserve an area beforehand. Also, 3 decent ales on that were very well received throughout the afternoon!

The renovation is great, friendly staff not tried the food though people seem to like it. Shame that the heating in the outside area is already not working, especially as it is 0 degrees today… The lady ‘tried’ to get it working but no joy. Also the men’s bathroom renovation was not thought through…

What a warm and pleasant venue! I had the beef & ale pie and it was delicious. The staff were welcoming, attentive and efficient and I shall certainly go again!

We have been twice now, since reopening, and it is 100% better than before.

Coffee and cake was lovely and at £2.99 a head was a brilliant price.

Good food, good beer, great table service. Dining area was unfortunately a little chilly because the side door was regularly left open.

First time I’ve been here for years and it was well with it. The service was efficient and the food delicious. The new look has made such a huge difference to the place and the new management are friendly and welcoming. Will definitely be back soon.

Shane and Leanne are so welcoming. The food is great, Nothing is too much trouble. This is a great place for all ages. A little gem in woodley.

The Good Companions is an excellent local pub with lovely welcoming staff and management. Having recently undergone a huge renovation, the pub is very smart, clean and very family friendly. We visited with parents and our 9 month old baby and cannot fault the place at all. There was a nice mix of families with children, older groups and younger groups. The pub has fantastic facilities inside and out and a couple of great areas for watching sports or playing pool or darts. The menu is vast and reasonably priced. We had starters, mains and desert and it was all really good. All meals were tasty and warm and the portions did not disappoint. It was also nice to have table service and a section just for food. We are already planning our next visit and cannot wait for the festive food and drinks menu in December.

Served promptly at a busy time and manager went out of her way to find a seat for us and ask us if we were eating. We had the special offer of 3 starters for £14 and the main course of fish & chips was just right. Pleasant staff & great atmosphere

This pub is friendly with a warm welcome from all the staff and customers. I didn't have the chance to eat there but the food being served look out of this world so yes world highly recommend you try it for yourself.

Very grateful to Landlord and staff at The Good Companions Woodley for their help and honesty in reuntoung my mum with her lost purse recently. When we returned to search for the lost purse a member of staff came out immediately to ask if my mum had lost her purse. After checking details my mum was relieved to be reunited with her lost purse. A big thank you for your help.

Came for Sunday dinner and watched a rugby game. It is so nice to be at this pub seeing it return to being a friendly, well run family friendly local. The landlord and landlady are watching everything and going above and beyond for their customers. The staff are well trained, smart and attentive. Well done all. See you when you re-open.

This place has 100% improved since new ownership

First visit after the renovation. The pub looks very nice inside as does the outside seating area. The two waitresses who served us were very friendly. Unfortunately unable to give 5 stars though which is a shame as the food was very nice with a good choice on the menu. Unfortunately the speed of the food coming out was really slow. It was a Tuesday and there were only a few other people eating but our main meals took quite a long time. We then we had to ask twice where the desserts were after waiting nearly 25 minutes and there was no one else waiting for food by then. All of this wouldn't have been a problem on a weekend but we didn't expect to wait so long on a weekday. We will return as the staff are friendly, it's a nice pub with reasonable prices but I would hope the next time the food comes out quicker.

Great local pub with friendly staff. Have lots of good bands & DJs on Fridays or Saturdays for entertainment. Love the small plates deal 6 for £26 all tasty picky bits whilst having a pint or two. A proper pub & just what Woodley needed.

Wow! What a turnaround. The refurbished Goodies is a pleasure to visit. The staff, food, drinks and entertainment are fab. We have been on numerous occasions and cannot fault anything.The varied entertainment is brilliant, from DJ’s to bands to a very well-run comedy night. Shane & Leanne, your hard work is appreciated.

A Good companion, I’ll tell ya what they weren’t lying. What a good companion they have been to me in my troubled time of need. Visited here for dinner for the first time since it has reopened after refurbishment and under new management. Nicely decorated and the place is spotless. The only irritation was a few little fruit flies flying around which is annoying when drinking wine as they seem to be very attracted to it. Also the chairs in the dining area are not comfortable to sit on. Next time I'll try the banquettes. The atmosphere in the pub was quiet overall, even though football was on. It was not loud or raucous. In the dining section it was dead, as we were the only two diners. There had been another couple but they departed shortly after our arrival. Our burgers were good, onion rings were very good and battered, not breaded. Unfortunately I had to send my fries back as they were not hot. The replacement was freshly cooked and piping hot. The fries are served already salted, quite heavily so. Although I didn't mind the fries coming already salted, this may not be to other diners liking and is something to be aware of. A nice touch was that we ordered with the waitress at the table, rather than going to the bar. The waitress was very efficient, friendly and polite. Value wise, tonight was 2 for 1 on burgers so it was a very good deal.

Their lager pumps were down. I understand problems happen. But to charge £4.75 for a bottle of lager( half pint) nearly the same as what you would pay for a pint...No thank you. I mentioned it to land lord and he told me to keep it down. I also heard a rumour that if your dog barks 3 times you are out...REALLY ?

Visited the newly refurbished pub and what a good job they have done. Food is so much better and the service is excellent. Plenty of staff serving with a smile. Tables being cleared constantly and cleaned. The new outside area is perfect. New pool table, new TV’s, clean toilets and clean glasses. The new couple Shane & Leanne have done a great job, this pub needed them. A decent local we can now enjoy again. Well done & good luck. 🍺🍺🍺

The refurbishment looks great and a brilliant outside area now as well. Unfortunately the roast dinner was cold and the Yorkshire puddings not defrosted in the middle. Reminded me very much of the pre take over standard of food. A hot meal cannot be that tricky.

Walked into the goodies for the first time since the newly renovations, only to be turned away within 5 seconds of being there. Told it was closed due to cellar issues! There was nothing on their website to advise either which we had checked prior...

Pub looks fabulous and it has a cosy and welcoming interior. I haven't eaten there yet but the menu looks good and reasonably priced. Staff very friendly, especially the young man...Colin or Callum I think his name was. Keep up the good work!

You just can't get better than this place. The new decoration and layout are incredible. The food is really good and the service is just fantastic, always a smile. Have a pizza or a burger and enjoy.

We arrived at 10.55am but too early (?) and asked to sit outside so twiddled our thumbs looking at the opening times signage that said opens at 9.00am - neither of the two owners welcomed us but one did tell me I couldn’t smoke in...

As a smoker, must give only a one star. A woeful treatment and hugely discriminatory to equal paying customers - can’t smoke in the newly erected detached structure - shuffled along some 50 yards to exterior garden and spying only one ashtray !!

Shane & Leanne did a great job on the refurb, Asahi on draft is personal favourite for me, Cheese & Bacon burger is delicious!

Girl behind the bar was miserable as hell. Bit of a grotty place.

Unfortunately this place is awful now. Landlady that don’t care and can’t be bothered. The staff are a disgrace, more interested in their phones than serving drinks. When you do eventually get a drink, the glasses are absolutely filthy. The food options are anything that...

Food was absolutely delicious, really good choice of cider too. Mac and cheese was lovely. Great manager and set in a handy location, we were very pleased. However, a real shame about the young girl behind the bar with an embarrassing attitude… rolled up top and vaping inside, swearing loud in front of customers, and sending people cringe worthy posed selfies on her phone whilst people were waiting to be served… really disgusting attitude and just sat her on phone sadly. Will not be returning for this reason as it just made us feel a bit uncomfortable and she was a let down to the business and service we received. Wear your uniform properly, smile a bit, put your phone down, and get rid of the vape!🙂 Shame about the service as the food and the owner man were super lovely 👌🏼

Terrible customer service was in town on business and they were not accommodating at all could not have the food I wished for no sauces and the attitude was disgusting !!

Tired the new Bacon & Blue burger, it was delicious and partner had Sirloin steak and Squid topper which was perfectly cooked. It was very quiet so food was cooked quickly and service from Tara and Paul was superb. Thank you

Disappointing meal, completely wrong order despite being the only customers. No extra onion rings, no mashed potato, an added unwanted fried egg and awful quality. One of the employees smoking near the back door but causing smoke to blow back into the premises. Poor value for money.

It used to have a good selection of real ales, but now usually just one, and that one has run out before now. Good value pub grub, would go more often if there was more real ale choice.

Nice little place for lunch. Friendly staff. Food ok. Don't try to take the dog biscuits at the bar unless you have a dog with you though!

Have been coming here occasionally for a pint. Staff are very welcoming and accommodating. Today came and was a bit hungry so Paul said have a mixed grill unfortunately I went for salt and pepper squid and felt even more hungry so had a mixed grill after that was very good and yes please listen to Paul he now.

Would recommend the small starters, you can get three or five on a deal, there great selection and perfect for sharing, also the homemade nachos are lovely

Went for Sunday lunch, reasonably priced and ample servings. Unfortunately had a bad attack of Acid reflux and had to ask for the food as a takeaway. Staff and patrons alike were very concerned regarding my condition, even offering to call an Ambulance! ( so thoughtful but unnecessary for Acid reflux). Anyway, I shall return to try out more of the menu .

As soon as we entered the pub I had a warm welcome from Leah. Very fast service and always happy to have a conversation with customers to get to know them. We will definitely be coming back very soon to see Leah and the rest...

Not been this local pub in many in months. I am so happy that this local has a manager that a gives a care about the Good companions The food is getting a lot better I went in for a Sunday roast And it was brilliant the beef sirloin was cooked to my liking and the staff offered our table more gravy and drinks when our pints were short This is what we are missing

Honestly when I first came here I had high expectations. I always see plenty of blokes inside and outside, and the building looks good. At its core it's a decent English pub, until I realised my pint was about 5 quid. Ridiculous. Other than that it's a decent atmosphere but I just can't give 4 stars with that price.

Had a lovely visit. Pub was fairly busy, but got a table in the restaurant no trouble, quick friendly service at the bar, and the food was lovely. Looks like it would be a good place for watching the football as well.

We visited today as a family of 5. Staff pleasant when taking our order. Food took about 30/40 mins to arrive at our table. Fish and chips was delicious and a decent portion. Hunters chicken was nice , unfortunately they had ran out of coleslaw...
