Very very average ,Sunday lunch roast beef was poor we were expecting better after reading reviews but maybe chef was ill!. Apple crumble was nice and hot, mentioned by friends it had probably just come out of microwave .Beware of service charge when paying bill.

The service was impeccable. The food definitely a five star. The chef showed imagination, fantastic flavours in every dish. The food was fresh and delicious 😋

The best Sunday lunch for a very long time. The roast beef was melt in the mouth and the Sticky Toffee Sundae was phenomenal.

We stayed at the George and Dragon and also had dinner. The staff were top class throughout, so friendly and helpful from the reception to the bar to the restaurant, nothing was too much trouble. The room was very comfortable, very clean and the decor was lovely. The food here is absolutely top notch, as is the wine selection. We will 100% stay again and next time will dine at the pub both nights, we loved it!

Have had dinner a number of times at George & Dragon, so decided to try the Sunday lunch as an early birthday treat. The topside of beef just melted in the mouth and I could have happily drank the gravy out of the jug. It was all devine. Also had the sticky toffee sundae. I didn’t know what to expect, but it was one of the best desserts I’ve had in a long time. Would highly recommend!

I felt unwell after eating the lamb and haggis wellington on NYE. It was wet and mushy, not the right consistency for haggis and there was hardly any lamb. Very disappointing.

We returned to the George and dragon for dinner, bed and breakfast - having stopped on our journey north to Scotland. Again we experienced a hugely warm welcome, checked in efficiently, enjoyed beautiful bedroom facilities and spent pre dinner drinks time in the bar. Mike instantly recognised us and even remembered our tipple from the week previous. Dinner was excellent! Service was excellent. Breakfast was excellent. All star performance at this cosy, gorgeous establishment.

It seems that the quality of the food is inversely proportional to the prices at the George. The ambience and service are always good so we have persevered but last night’s food was disappointing. The abetted steak was stringy, overcooked and very small, the game suet pudding dry and full of large unappetising chunks of overcooked meat. The automatic addition of a service charge is always annoying even if the service is good. We won’t be back…

Excellent food nice atmosphere, they have took on board comments and give sides with mains so prices are now fair and competitive.

A 33% restaurant. Prices about 33% too high, service around 33% too slow, portions around 33% too small (for a Sunday roast) and probably around 33% too many tables crammed into the restaurant. Wines were particularly disappointing, all around 300 +(33%) % mark up, £11 Sarah at £35...bizarrely bit cheaper to buy by the 250ml carafe! Even then not especially good, which is strange as the sister restaurant Alium won an award recently for its wine list. Food good in the main, though roasts were too dry and veg over boiled. Starters very well done. £250 for 4 people Sunday lunch...overall, won't be revisiting.

Very nice souffle and scotch egg, but thick and largely undercooked suet pudding? Upon trying to settle the bill, we politely stated that we had left a tip on the table, so the 10% discretionary service charge should be omitted. The staff member informed us, that this was not the case, and we had to pay it, but we could remove our tip if we wished to do so?? So much for discretion???

Relatively small menu, allowing for consistency, with just enough choice. Emphasis on locality, provenance and seasonality of ingredients. Good level of skill evident from the kitchen in terms of presentation, execution and portion size. Service was friendly and functional with perhaps a small opportunity to raise the bar (menu knowledge & attentiveness). Absolutely nothing to disappoint and we will certainly be back.

Dinner out with friends from Penrith. Nice interesting menu selection which was not the usual pub grub. All made for a very enjoyable evening.

Such a great Sunday lunch, currently working our way through all the pubs in cumbria and so far this is the best!

Interesting to see that Grace Dent gave a positive review to the G&D in this week’s Guardian- sadly, my non-celebrity reviewer experience was less impressive. It’s clear the Askham group has a vision for what they want G&D to offer- the website looks good, the menu sounds interesting and there’s been a lot of investment in the building, albeit creating a designer’s vision of what a Cumbrian country inn should look like, rather than something that feels authentic. On our visit, the food was generally hit and miss and doesn’t feel like good value unless consistency is improved. The kitchen team is clearly capable but the vegetarian dishes in particular were lacklustre, perhaps reflecting a lack of experience outside more traditional cooking. Service was lacking- slow to bring drinks and on arrival, completely the wrong order. Check backs almost entirely absent, not allowing for any feedback at all. Even on paying the bill, no “how was your evening?” from what presumed was the restaurant manager. In view of the lack of interest on the night, I emailed with some constructive feedback, only to receive a slow and lukewarm response, very much a brush off. A disappointing visit overall, for what was meant to be a birthday celebration. Overconfident and living on its reputation perhaps?
