The George and Dragon in Selby

It’s a small, very old pub, around 500 years old. It’s had several owners, since I’ve been here in 1984.

Went with friends and they refused to accept a valid ID even though we were told by the same staff member that a different bar would accept it, but she wouldn’t! basically seemed like she was too embarrassed and stubborn to admit she was wrong and just serve us and follow procedure!

We are pleased that we decided to come back to the George and Dragon besides a good pub menu there is also a specials board as well. As a roaring fire in the dinning area to great you as well something that is very much appreciated this time of year.

Visited for a meal which was delicious. The beer was spot on and staff friendly. I wish that we had a pub like this in our village

My husband and I had lunch on a Sunday. I had the turkey roast and he had the steak & onion pie. Both were accompanied by mash, cauliflower cheese, broccoli, mixed boiled vegetables & Yorkshire pudding. And, of course, a large jug of tasty gravy. The turkey was excellent and plentiful, very tasty and moist. The pie was superb! It had a proper shortcrust and a tasty filling. We didn't try the desserts because we were too full from the main course, but, from what we could see from the other diners, the desserts looks great! We will definitely return!

My brother in law decided to try a different eating out experience, outside Selby (about 10 to 15 mins outside Selby. ) It was a beautiful evening and sat outside for a couple of drinks first,before going into the restaurant. My B.I.L had steak pie, my Sister in law had lasagne, my wife had chicken and I had bbq pulled pork. Everybody enjoyed their home made dishes and we all rated our main meals at 5 star. My olive and feta salad starter and Elton Mess pudding were also first class. The restaurant was really pleasant and quite cool on a really hot day and the waitress - owner was both pleasant and courteous. We all would recommend a visit and we will definitely be back. Eating gem in the sticks.

We’ve been here several times now and always enjoyed it so decided treat my mum and dad for father’s day.

A great little Pub, Eatery + B&B; tucked away in a nice little pocket of North Yorkshire. Fair selection of beers and nice people. There is a car park on site. I plan on popping back for food !

We was camping in West Haddesley with our caravan and friends over the Bank Holiday so on the Friday night we booked for evening meal at the George & Dragon the landlord and his wife were very friendly and helpful and the meal was just wonderful and the it was so good we went back for Sunday dinner and we had a wonderful dinner and sweet to follow .It was so good we are booking for an evening meal

After reading the reviews I though I’d better try this out for myself, it was beautiful I had the mixed grill which was lovely and the portion size was plentiful, I recommend anything with gravy on as well as I tried my wife’s pie which was also perfect but it came with a jug of gravy that I had all to myself!! So yes highly recommended and definitely worth the reviews. The staff in there were also very friendly and helpful.

After reading all the reviews we were quite excited to finally visit. We booked in on Thursday evening which turned out to be a night when a limited menu only was available (wasn’t informed of this when booking over the phone).

Fantastic dinner again last night as always. Very good variety of different things to choose from on the menu for starters, mains and puddings. The quality of the food just cannot be beaten and the value is amazing. I would happily pay twice as much for it! Shirley and Paul always make you feel very welcome.

This lovely little Pub is very friendly and welcoming. The Sunday lunch was excellent value for money and thw food was homecooked and beautiful. A must try if you are in the area.

Lovely local pub, I had the spicy chicken kebab which was absolutely divine and my husband had the beef rib which he thoroughly enjoyed. Paul and Shirley are very welcoming, can’t recommend it enough

As a regular customer I'm often guilty of ordering the same things over and over as they're that good, but last night I tried something different with Shirley's "posh fish butty" and it was fantastic. Really enjoyed the meal, and as ever the atmosphere was...

Simple and tasty home cooked food in a traditional English pub. Ample portions, plenty of choice and great value. Hand pulled cask ale from the local micro brewery was in superb condition.

Can not recommend the food enough . Shirley and Paul are perfect hosts will be going back very soon . Nothing was too much trouble xx

I visited the George and Dragon for a Sunday lunch with my family. The food and service was outstanding with a varied lunch menu and plenty of homemade desserts to choose from. I would highly recommend this pub to anyone looking for a tasty home cooked meal.

Called in for tea, first time we've been here but will be going back. The food was gorgeous all home made and plenty of choice and good portions.

Family and friends all went for the Thursday special. Starters of cheesy potato wedges, Delightful steak pie and gravy. Chips out of this world. Followed by snickers cheesecake. Shirley even did my wife’s own gravy mix as she is gluten free, thanks Shirley!

what a lovely pub this is Shirley and Paul are the best minehost made to feel very welcome food was superb beef and lamb was the best plenty of veg and potatoes desserts well what can I say my granddaughter loves coming if your thinking of a place to go for sunday lunch or through week can highly recommend it you won't be disappointed

Found on trip advisor when looking for Sunday lunch, so phoned & booked a table for 4. Good job I did as when we arrived the first thing we saw was the fully booked sign. Lovely little bar with a great local pub feel, the food was fantastic 4 Sunday lunch’s all had different, I had a steak & onion pie it was beautiful, we all had a pudding too. Great to find a proper pub with real home cooked food, a 40 mile round trip for us but we will be calling back again.

Went for a family meal and the staff couldn't do more to accommodate us. I phoned the night before and requested a special dessert and they were great. Food was fantastic and everyone really enjoyed themselves. Brilliant xx

We loved our family meal here and booked in advance. Such a cosy pub with a warm welcome and lovely dining experience. The food was just fantastic and the puddings went down a treat. Defiantly worth a visit! We can't wait until our next visit.

4 of us visited for a meal last night having read the reviews on Tripadvisor. We were warmly welcomed at the bar where we ordered our first round and moved to our table. Everyone was extremely friendly and our food was promptly delivered. The food was very very good with excellent portions. The spicy chicken lasagne was especially good! Although we were full, we forced ourselves to try deserts and they were excellent as well. I hope more people get a chance to try this gem of a typical village pub. We will be back soon!

Visited here last night having read all the hype on facebook and boy were we not disappointed. We had booked in advance to get Shirleys Thursday deal and arrived to a lovely warm greeting in the bar and from Shirley. If you book in advance on a Thursday you get two starters for £5, two mains for £10 and two puddings for £5 so basically a three course meal for £10. The menu is a limited menu for this offer but there is still loads of choice of starters and mains and puds and they certainly are not small portions like you get in some places when offers are on. The service was fast, the food was lovely homemade food which we could not fault. My husband who is a vegetarian was more than happy with his choices and delighted to find the chips werent cooked in dripping. Thank you for a lovely evening Shirley, we have already booked to go back and having looked at the full menu last night, lots of visits are needed to make sure we try lots of things we fancied on the menu.

Re visited the G&D; after a number of years and really pleased as the food on offer is really good and matched with great service.

Not often I bother to write reviews but for the George and Dragon I’m willing to make an exception. Visited for Sunday dinner (Shirley fitted us in despite calling last minute) and can’t speak of it highly enough. Starters were lovely and the mains (steak and Stilton pie and turkey roast) delicious, veg cooked to perfection, exactly how a Sunday dinner should be. Portions were very generous and all courses very reasonably priced.

Sorely tempted to award 5 stars but I VERY rarely do. This was a very good Pub meal with Pleasant and courteous service and smiles throughout. Well-presented Pub food in a dog-friendly clean and pleasant country pub. Thanks guys.

First time trying this pub & we had a lovely Sunday Lunch. Very busy & a little short staffed waiting on but the lady did a fantastic job & the food was ‘hot ‘ & plentiful. We will definitely be going back. Price is good as well. Need to book

Visited this place several times know we were there sunday 21st Jan good was lovely we had beef and lamb choice of potatoes and veg in abundance gravy is the best sweets are yummy and plenty to choose between my granddaughter gets so excited when she knows we are going Shirley and Paul are so friendly and welcoming

So very lucky to have this place as my local..my addiction to steak pie means I have visited many many times!!!Thursday's two for a tenner a fabulous offer not to be missed. However..Shirleys home cooking on a evening , with a full choice from the menu was scrumptious.

Me and my girlfriend visited the 2 weekend in January, I could not believe how helpful the staff was, they seemed to appreciate that we had come out of our way to visit! The food was amazing and what a portion ive never seem a portion so big in all my life! Food ✅ Customer Service ✅ and a great choice of beers ✅ I had fillet steak which was amazingly cooked and my girlfriend had sausage and mash which was amazing too we’ll be back soon that’s for sure

Been a few times now and always something different on the menu - not just your usual pub grub (but there is that too!). Always a good selection of beers too and Shirley & Paul are always wonderful hosts. Our dog loves it too

Visited for Sunday lunch today with a large group, Paul was very helpful in regards to the booking we made. Some of our group were delayed due to a name confusion, but they were very understanding. Overall the food was divine, that gravy with the roast dinner I wanted to take home with me!

I have been coming here on and off for years and it never disappoints. We came here for sunday lunch this week and the food was amazing as usual. Ate here as a family of 5 for Christmas Day lunch. The food was fabulous, all home cooked and with plenty of choice. Service was fantastic although the pub was very busy, nothing was too much trouble. It must be very difficult to produce food to such a high standard for so many diners and to give up your own Christmas Day. I would recommend this pub for anyone, just give it a try and you won’t be disappointed! You’ll want to keep coming back as much as I do!

Local family took us here for lunch, after raving about the food. It did not disappoint, delicious roast dinner. Service was fast and friendly. Will definitely be coming back. If I lived local I'd definitely be a lunch regular.

We visited the George and Dragon for our Christmas Day Dinner this year. Five of us ate in total and had the meal booked from October.I feel eating elsewhere for Christmas puts a lot of pressure on whoever is hosting you, to get it right - but I had no doubts about Shirley's menu or capabilities! Shirley duly delivered on a fantastic turkey dinner, lovely starters and (two!) brilliant deserts. Despite the pub being full of both eaters and drinkers, we never felt rushed to get to our table, or get away from it - it was a thoroughly enjoyable few hours of our Christmas Day and would recommend this to anybody in the area. Our plans are still up in the air for next year, but given half the chance I would book again in a heartbeat.

Visited with 8 family members New Years Eve. A warm welcome greeted us. The food was outstanding as always. A varied menu, something for everyone. The Sunday roast is wonderful with plenty of everything. Shirley is a fabulous cook, loved it all. This wasn't our 1st visit and certainly wont be our last.

Whenever I travel north to visit family I'll always insist on dining at this restaurant. We're always greeted warmly and promptly by staff. The food isn't just great because of the very reasonable pricing and generous portion size. You can taste a wealth of experience and passion in every bite, that is very hard to find these days.

I booked for Christmas Day at very short notice and was lucky enough to get a table. I took 2 children with me and we all enjoyed the food. I ordered the roast beef, steak pie and vegetarian cottage pie and they came with loads of vegetables including sprouts, parsnips, roast potatoes, cauliflower and swede. As the kids have small appetites I ended up eating most of the meals (no mean feat as Shirley does very generous portions!) so I can say with confidence; the beef melt in the mouth, the vegetarian cottage pie was very tasty and the steak pie was, as usual, to die for. For dessert we had 2 chocolate fudge cakes and an Eton Mess.........again I ate a lot of this and both puddings were fab.To say I rolled home is an understatement!

We booked for 33 friends and family. The food as always was lovely and made all the more special by the great friendly service. This is the best food I have ever had, all home cooked and delicious. The gravy is the better that any I have tasted. Thank you xx

Ate there with the family on Christmas Day and as usual the food was to die for! Starter of prawns and salmon was delicious, turkey and trimmings including roasties, cauliflower cheese and loads of veg absolutely amazing and the Christmas pudding cheesecake was fantastic! We eat there as often as we can. Thank you Shirley!

This is our 2nd year at having Christmas Dinner at the George & Dragon. There was something for everyone, from the traditional Christmas Dinner to the Fish Platter that my Dad enjoyed. The portions are enormous & incredibly tasty. We have been eating at this pub for the last 6 years & cannot recommend it enough. Such a warm, cosy pub & the owners Shirley & Paul are so welcoming. There wasn't a starter that my 9 year old liked (fussy!) but Shirley went out of her way to accommodate him & made him something that wasn't even on the menu. Talk about hospitality! All 5 of us had a different dessert & I wish I could have eaten them all. I had the homemade Christmas Pudding Cheesecake & I will never go back to eating just Christmas Pudding. It should always come in cheesecake form. You never feel rushed to eat & leave like in a lot of establishments & Shirley is always the perfect host. If you only try one new place to eat in 2018, make sure it's this place. I promise you won't be disappointed!!!

Another wonderful meal at the G&D again last night. We had steak & kidney pudding and steak & ale pie. Both were really tasty. Mountains of tasty chips and the veg is fresh and perfectly cooked. We both also had starters, coffee and a couple of pints each - total cost less than £40! Cannot be beaten in the area for quality and value. We’ll be back again soon!!!

My wife and I visit this Pub every Sunday for Lunch, we always find the food fantastic and the service great, Last Sunday we went with 3 of our relatives. We ordered 2 Turkey roasts, 2 Steak and Mushroom pies and a Hunters Chicken. Our relatives, who eat out a lot, all agreed that this was the best Sunday Lunch that they had ever tasted. My wife and I will be back this Sunday and the following Sunday we are taking out some more relatives as a birthday treat. Go on, try this pub - you will not be disappointed.

Booked a table for 2 last Friday evening and arrived to a warm welcome in this cosy village pub. Opted to skip starters as we had already spotted the desserts board. We both chose meals from the specials board - lamb shank served on a bed of mashed potato, and steak pie with double Gloucester and black pepper pastry - both were amazing! The steak in the pie was so tender and full of flavour, served with a rich gravy and seasonal veg. My husband was equally pleased with the lamb - it was so tender it fell off the bone. We didn't think we would be able to manage dessert however we were temped with sticky toffee pudding cheesecake to share and it was divine!All in all, genuinely friendly service, fantastic home cooked food and great value. It's 18 months since our last visit and we won't be leaving it that long again!! See you soon......

The village of West Haddlesey is beautiful, enjoy a walk along the canal before or after a visit to the pub. We booked for Sunday Lunch and received a warm welcome, enjoyed great food and will be back again.

We've eaten here several times but this was our first time for Sunday lunch. It was absolutely beautiful. Great portions, all home cooked, fresh veg and a lovely welcome as always. Hubby had the beef and I had the quorn cottage pie. Both left full to the brim and fell in to a satisfied carb coma! Great value, you won't be disappointed!

As our monthly eatery the owl at hambleton was being refurbished I suggested we should try my favourite place for pie! My 5 friends were more than impressed with the Thursday night meal deal and were blown away with Shirley's delicious homemade pies. Thanks for saving me a cheese and onion one. I mentioned that the cheesecakes were all homemade too and suddenly there was room for pud! All to die for the owls loss is your gain Shirley they will definitely be back. Thanks Chris Marshall x

Following reviews on tripadvisor we decided to visit for the first time for Sunday lunch.Starting with local ales and then followed by a Sunday lunch which was unbelievably good. I started with the tandoori chicken goujons was were very good. We both chose to have the turkey roast, What an excellent choice. The lturkey tasted fresh and tender with one of the best array on vegetables. Before leaving we placed a further booking.

Went for Sunday lunch and yet again Shirley doesn’t disappoint.First time I’ve managed to get in as I usually book too late and it’s always busy. Now I can see why. Friendly greeting at the bar and quickly seated. Great choice for Sunday lunch, not just the usual roast dinner (although that was what we fancied!)We quickly ordered and food arrived in no time (as usual) piping hot and generous portions. We got a turkey and a lamb dinner and a MASSIVE Yorkshire pudding! Yum! Potatoes and veg served on the side which I prefer as I don’t overface myself (and eat everything in sight!) absolutely delicious. Dessert was the usual cheesecake and crumble, amazing and such great value.This is one of our favourite pubs to visit and always look forward to going. Can’t visit too often as it’s not good for the waistline ;)

Went back for Sunday lunch yesterday with my other half and her sister. They had pies and I had the beef. All of us were left fully satisfied. The beef just melted in your mouth. Lovely fresh veg and generous portions. Starters and puddings were spot on too. Absolutely cannot be beaten for price and quality in the area!!

Lovely pub in a rural setting that really is worth looking up. Good real ale served well and the food is excellent. The Stilton Pie is to die for, best i have ever had. Gravy also is sublime. All of our meals were of high quality. The puddings are also first class, especially the cheesecakes. Service was quick and efficient with nothing too much trouble. Get to a little hidden gem now and support local independent pubs not mass produced chains.

Went into this pub for a price comparion on drinks when compared to another pub about a mile away [ Jug Inn] at Chapel Haddlesey - in the area - where for a G & T,[ ice & lemon] and 1/2 a lager I was charged £10.00, which seemed excessive.My wife & i went into the G & D - ordered the same drink & was charged £6.20. Which was nearer to the price I expected. Very busy at the bar area, although there was plenty of space for dining. It has been several years since we visited last - and we felt it quite bare & basic. Did not have any food at this time, although i understand they do serve good wholesome food. As i say i wanted to 'test the drink prices' .

Never been here before, and I have to say was made so welcome as soon as we walked through the door, the food was all home cooked, and everyone enjoyed it. Great price and plenty. The staff couldn't do enough for you. We will defiantly be returning, and I would defiantly recommend it. Thank you and see you very soon again x

We went to the George and Dragon at West Haddlesey for sunday lunch this weekend , what a fabulous meal and the staff couldn't have been friendlier , we both had the steak and stilton pie and it was magnificent .Would definitely recommend a visit especially as they made this weekends Yorkshire puddings with locally sourced duck eggs !! Where else would you get that ?

Visited George and Dragon with my husband for a meal tonight. Meal was delicious and Shirley made me a vegetarian option. We visit often and we are never disappointed with the service and food. I would highly recommend this friendly little pub. We will be back.

We recently had Home made pie and have to say it was absolutely excellent, the gravy was also fantastic. It was full of meat and the pastry was lovely This pub is well worth going for a meal, fantastic service and excellent value for money It would be hard to find another place who can bake pies as they can here. Would recommend a visit

I have been to this pub loads of times over the years but haven't been for quite a while of late. I decided to go there for Sunday lunch as I've not been for several months. The lunch was fabulous as always with everything cooked to perfection. The meat was plentiful and there was the added dish of vegetables to put on the plate - no-one went hungry I can tell you. The gravy is proper gravy and is delicious. After we had polished off this mound of food we went on to dessert.........I'm the one who checks the desserts before the mains s I was all prepared for the malteser cheesecake. It was gorgeous served with ice cream (I really should be the official pudding tester for this place!).All in all a great experience with a wonderful meal.

Been here so many times for food with family and friends, with never anything less than 100% satisfaction from everyone who sits at Shirley's table..... but this time it was just me, on my own at 2130ish, for a quiet pint....and once again, the perfect pub visit.....perfectly served pint of Theakstons....great conversation from bar staff and regulars....can't recommend this place enough.

Shirley does a number of fantastic dishes at the George and Dragon, all home cooked - but a stand out star is the Steak, Port and Stilton Pie. Cracking chips and signature gravy, I could eat this over and over again (and do, pretty much every visit).Aside from cracking food, this pub makes for a great evening of social drinking and nattering with friends and family, Paul and Rob are both bang on behind the bar and are very good at bringing different guests together to enhance the atmosphere at the bar.Top notch, if you're thinking of going - get booked in!

After walking along the canal bank with my dog stumbled across the George and Dragon. Great dog friendly pub ate a lovely meal and my dog was well looked after. A great way to end my walk thank you for your hospitality

Was recommended to try as our normall Sunday Lunch pub had closed down. we are really pleased we went for the meal. The food is fantastic, home cooked and served very quickly. my thanks to Paul and shirley for making our first visit very memorable. We have already booked for next week.

8 of us came for a meal and Shirley never disappoints.The fillet steak was divine and cooked to perfection.Everyone enjoyed there meals.We had 3 courses and couldn't move after as very good size portions.Had a pudding to share which was fab and a lovely selection.Shirley was very busy that night and even though 8 of us service was excellent. Would highly recommend to anyone to go for a visit.x

Not managed to get to the G&D for a few months, great to see the steak & ale pie is as gorgeous as ever, as was the chocolate fudge cake! Lovely food and nice welcome, couldn't ask for more, we won't leave it so long next time!

We visited for an evening meal.we was made to feel welcome by the barman. We was shown to our table and we looked at the menu. There was so much choice And there was also a specials board. I chose the Cajun chicken which came with salad and chips, it was a great size portion. My partner had mixed grill which also was a good portion.the waitress was very pleasant and accommodating. Our food was lovely, proper homemade chips as well. There was a good choice of homemade deserts, I chose peanut butter and snickers cheesecake which came with a side portion of cream.I will definitely be returning to this venue as the food and service was great.

We visited twice recently we enjoyed our 1st visit so much we returned again before the week was out. The food is delicious it's definitely made with love, the staff are friendly and accommodating we were made to feel welcome. Excellent portion sizes will definitely return .

Called in for Sunday lunch, friendly bar staff and home cooked style food although meat & Yorkshire pud a bit overdone for my taste and as a larger group the way veg was served quite awkward. Would probanly go on another day to try the full menu as this not available Sundays. Nice village local.

Called in on a lovely Summer's evening in July. Had 3 pints of Morreti, excellent pint. What is disappointing is the state of the so called beer garden. The decking is in an awful state, it hasn't even been swept in the past 6 months with the look of it. One of the tables had an umbrella on which was literally in pieces. The ash tray on the table was full. Such a shame.

We visited last Saturday evening after reading all the wonderful reviews, but left very disappointed.On the positive side, the drinks were great, and waiting staff perfect. The food really lets it down.We could hear another lady complaining about her meal, and the owner who is also seemingly the chef took it very personally and just said that no-one else has ever complained before and you can't please everyone.The portions are enormous but the chips were very over-cooked, the Hunters Chicken was very ordinary and greasy, and the coleslaw is definitely NOT homemade!! I was disappointed also that the Shirley's World (diet) menu is no longer available even though it's on the website.My husband was disappointed with the fish which was small once the copious amount of batter was removed (removed because it didn't taste nice and was very greasy).Overall, I cannot understand the amazing reviews this pub has received, maybe you just can't please everyone!!

Had Sunday lunch 2nd July 2017. First time in the pub and the staff/owners were very friendly. Lovely old traditional style pub which I prefer, in a gorgeous tranquil location. We were a party of 4, two had beef (me) and two lamb with the Sunday lunch. Loads of meat cooked perfectly, more than enough vegetables served separately (roast and mashed potatoes, carrots, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and sprouts) with plenty of gravy and a Yorkshire pud. Probably best roast dinner I've had for a while. Had eton mess for dessert which was lovely and refreshing, although the sticky toffee pud looked very light and tempting. Quite local to me so hopefully will be trying full menu and 'two for a tenner Thursday' menu soon too.

Whether having dinner or just enjoying the company over a few beers - Paul and Shirley make us feel at home and keep us going back for more. Our In-laws are also hooked and are always asking when we can next go back for some food.I've started straying away from Shirley's Pies and I haven't been disappointed yet. Spicy Chicken Kebab was my last non-Pie visit and it was fantastic.

Went last Sunday for our sons birthday lunch I had the roast beef dinner it's the best Sunday dinner I've had in a long while. Proper home made Yorkshire pud beef was perfectly tender loads of veg and onion gravy. My husband had the pie he was well happy as was the rest of the family. They were fully booked so very busy but service was good staff are all lovely and you are made to feel welcome. It's a great country pub with great food we will be back soon.

The food is all home cooked and the pudding are lush shirley does amazing job and alwise goes the extra mile, defo would be returning again

How anyone can rate this as terrible I will never know. The home cooked food is absolutely gorgeous. A lot of time and effort obviously goes into preparing and delivering a high standard of food. The variations are brill too. The Tenner Thursday offer always has a varied menu and the portion sizes are fab!! If anything too much food but I love my food! Shirley is always smily and welcoming as is her hubby who's normally behind the bar. The beers on offer are always different and a great price. If I lived closer I'd be in a lot more

We have eaten here many times and each and every visit has always been fab. The food is just heavenly, huge portions and very very tasty. Real ale on tap and always a great choice. But the icing on the cake is the friendly welcome we always get from Shirley, although I have to say the mini egg cheesecake came a very close second on our last visit. That was the tastiest cheesecake ever. Carry on doing what you do as you do it so well.

Wonderful old fashioned pub grub great portions too topped off with great hospitality. I would highly recommend the george and dragon

Been here lots of times and never have I had a bad meal.The owners are lovely and very accommodating.Lovely starters mains and homemade puddings your can't go wrong.Good prices too.Proper home cooked food.

Lovely home cooked food in a friendly atmosphere served with a smile. Also accompanied by the best ales in Selby.

Have visited the G&D on a number of occasions. Food is superb, and Shirley and the team are great. Would highly recommend.

Luckily visited George and dragon many times to my pleasure. Love the food, portions, atmosphere. Never had a bad meal & always recommend the food to people asking for a good meal.
