The Gate Inn in Bassetlaw

Wow what can i say, this is the first time coming here as we were visiting my parents who have recently moved here so they treated us to a meal for my birthday. The food and service was by far a 10 out of 10. All freshly cooked food and decent portions for the price too. I had the Sticky Chicken for starters 🤤🤤and a Chicken, Ham and Leek Pie for main course which was well filled. I loved the deco and how comfortable the crushed velvet chairs were which made it even more comfy. The whole place was clean and inviting to everyone. All the staff we were in contact with with so bubbly and friendly, especially the owner? Who took our order and the lady who waited on us too. The only niggle for me was i was to hot but thats personal preference as im never cold and was sittinf by a radiator. Such a lovely pub its a shame its going to be closing ☹️

4 of us called in on the off chance for food and so glad we did.the sticky chicken was amazing and my daughter had the chicken mushroom and brandy which was also good.my husband had the belly pork and he loved it especially the crackling on top. my son went for the Tyson burger which was tasty but very big!all in all was definitely worth a visit and we will see you again very soon.

Been to this pub many time for a quick drink with friends but never eaten until today.food was spot on!staff were polite and very attentive and the restaurant has a great atmosphere.will return and definitely recommend.

Came here with friends can’t recommend enough food was brilliant service by the female staff member was great and she was very knowledgeable of the menu which helped us as there was easy over 50% of the menu I would of picked!we will defiantly be back for another visit.

First lunchtime opening after an extended Christmas break was looking forward to it, I ordered ham egg chips off the specials menu and my son ordered cheese burger off the main menu. Ham looked as though it was left over from boxing day and chips were cold, sons burger was undercooked and bread bun very soggy again chips cold and burger not that warm either £11 for 2 shandy’s ! The place was freezing freezing it was warmer outside than inside. Female staff member was lovely as ever

From the moment you walk in the door the Xmas decorations are mesmerising!!staff really friendly and nothing is too much trouble.I opted for The sticky chicken as it is my favourite my husband had a lovely steak and ale pie homemade with there delicious chunky chips.if you love home cooked food in a cosy setting then it’s a must!

I know there is a war on but this was definitely rations eat there most weeks and paid 14 quid for a small dinner used to be able to get your own carvery veg etc but was very disappointed with the amount of food, finished my dinner and am still hungry good for eating in but not takeaway feel like I’ve paid much more for much less

Visited the Gate Inn with my mum and sister for a girly night and was instantly taken back by the stunning interior which gave such a warm, calming and relaxed atmosphere. The menue has so many options to choose from we were truly spoilt for choice. Me and my mum went for the amazing sticky chicken and my sister had the fish creape. The portions were huge and none of us were able to finish them. The taste and flavour or the amazing sticky chicken was unreal and the rice were cooked to perfection. The only thing I would say about this dish is that it was spicy. So if you don't do spice maybe go for something else. The service were brilliant and our waiter Lilly were so incredibly tentertive. She recommend the ice cake for dessert which we all shared and what a great recommendation. Can't wait to return to try the Sunday carvery. Thank you looking after us.

We went to the gate inn last Thursday, 4 of us for lunch. We were having a get together as one of our colleagues is leaving for Australia. The customer service is amazing, all the staff are extremely helpful, very polite and so chatty. As for the food, well we all had a different meal and they were all absolutely delicious and definitely value for money. I can’t recommend the Gate inn highly enough. See you soon

Brilliant pub. We had a warm welcome when calling in for Sunday lunch. We stopped off on our way from London to Yorkshire. Great customer service & eclectic decor. Sunday lunch (carvery) was delicious, piping hot and good selection. We visited with our 6 year old and 3 year old. Other alternative (non-roast) options for children were excellent and quality including pubs own home made chicken nuggets & chips. Beer /real ale good too. Thank you.

We had a great time at the cabaret night. The night was flawless. The hosting was fantastic, decorations were amazing, the entertainment was outstanding. A two course meal and entertainment for £35 each was excellent value. Loved it & will be back.

Having struggled to previously get a table we finally made it last week. It did not disappoint. The welcome was warm and fun, the menu choices is extensive and a bit overwhelming but in a good way. There was so much to choose from it was difficult to decide. The sticky chicken with rice was a winner. The terriaki salmon was OK, for some reason I thought the stir fried veg would be chinese but it wasn't which was a shame. Anyway, the experience overall was positive and the service attentive and friendly.

Went to the Gate Inn without a booking and had a lovely lunch. Lots of vegetarian options, halloumi salad was superb. The service was fantastic. Overall great experience, will be returning!

Three of us have been tonight.What a wonderful meal.One gammon and chips with 2 eggs Salmon for the two ladies very nicely presented and plentiful.Gammon was well cooked and accompanied with a nice dressed salad and chips to die for.Chris the owner entertained us but not over the top.Forgot to mention the ice cold lager!We’ll be backWell done Chris.

All through lockdown I had the takeaway Sunday dinners while they were being served. Today was my first time back with family and friends and it was fabulous! Amazing service from Chris and the team … amazing food. I just wish I could manage 3 courses.It’s busy on a Sunday and it’s a walk-in service but they have it so well organised. Worth a short wait for sure!

First visit and certainly won’t be the last!Found this little gem on tripadvisor after reading previous comments about quality of food. Truly missed a little local not knowing this was virtually on my doorstep that can serve “proper” homemade food. The portions were adequate, quality fantastic! We could not fault the service, the staff were attentive and friendly. Well done to the chef/chefs that create the dishes (they can cook) Chicken in Stilton sauce from the before 5pm menu was outstanding! I’ll be back to sample the other delicious menu offerings. Restaurant is beautifully decorated- this free house deserves praise…Will be back again soon!

I decided to hold my husbands 40th birthday celebration at The Gate Inn, Sutton. A small gathering of family & friends due to the current restrictions but I honestly can’t thank Chris Jessop and the staff for ensuring we had the most special, memorable evening. The food served was absolutely incredible and is still being spoken about amongst the family & friends that came to The Gate Inn. The table service was second to none with a constant flow of drinks !Chris and all the staff made my husbands birthday extra special by decorating the outside Marquee with balloons, fairy lights, matching table cloths & napkins …. they honestly couldn’t do enough for us. The atmosphere created by the staff was just perfect.A fantastic evening had by all and would highly recommend The Gate Inn for any special celebration event you may have coming up in the near future.5 STARS …..Thank you again.

Me and my husband went for our anniversary on the 23rd of June food was fabulous unfortunately the bar waiting staff were not after finishing my main witch was half a chicken chicken dinner I went outside to hear the bar waitress staff slagging me of for leaving a quarter of my chicken it was a very large meal and iv struggled with eating in the past I ate 80% of the meal hearing this was very upsetting once we had finished our meal my husband and I both went to the bathroom once I returned I heard the staff saying we had done a runner without paying running round looking for us we was gone for 2 minutes very judgemental blonde waitress it was very upsetting and we will not be returning

Simply smashed it. A really lovely venue and the warmest of welcomes after our long period in Lockdown. Great attention to health and safety, super friendly and attentive. Sunday roast was lovely, especially those GIGANTIC Yorkshire puddings.

Amazing afternoon and stunning outdoor set up! The food is hearty portions and exceptional quality, staff couldn’t do enough for us, the set up for outdoor dining is by far the best I’ve seen anywhere and we will without a doubt be returning x

Went for a family meal in the outdoor heated gazebo area. Very well set out, beautifully decorated, efficient, friendly service and great food. Really trying to pull out all the stops in these difficult times, and achieving it brilliantly!

All i can say is wow - the service we received from the team was fantastic. you are spoilt for choice with the menu - most definitely would recommend mushrooms in stilton as a starter but looked like a main (portion size). a fantastic experience and most definitely would recommend.

My wife and I were staying locally and had reviewed this pub before booking for two evenings. We were not disappointed, all safety measures were in place for covid on arrival so we felt safe whilst sitting in the restaurant area. The main menu is very extensive plus there was a large specials board with many more choices, unbelievable selection. I chose a chicken pie on first night ( a large slice which was made by the chef and full of flavour) , all of the food was of the highest standard. The staff were very friendly and efficient.We chatted to Chris the land lord who certainly knows how to run a pub. I highly recommend The Gate Inn.

Decided to go out for carvery with the family today, first time visited The Gate Inn since lockdown. Was not disappointed, very Covid secure, plenty of space between tables, attentive staff. After looking at "specials" board which had a very wide selection of food, we all decided to go for Turkey carvery. Pipping hot, the best Yorkshire puddings, selection of vegetables brought to you in a separate bowl. I have a severely disabled daughter with autism, staff engaged with her and paid her special attention, which is very important to me. We will be back.

Rude, would never return. Not sure why we even entertained it, after visiting his last place and experiencing his awful service we both said we would never visit having liked the pub and food previously. Wish we hadn’t. What bad service, arrogant man. Oh and don’t try and go to the pub for a drink, it’s not a pub anymore either apparently.

Definitely worth booking at the Gate Inn, staff all extremely attentive and friendly. Went for a meal which after a good wait was excellent and a 10 inch square plate was full and very reasonably priced Had the chicken and excellent service. The curious attitude of the those at the bar was exemplified however when a gentleman without a mask who was propping up the bar, chose to tell us to take our masks off. We explained, even though we did not have to, that when walking around we had been previously advised we had to wear our masks. I should had added that bar propping was not permitted but was clearly in the minority. Not the pub's fault of course but was a reflection of the disregard being shown to Covid. Not good

We had heard how excellent the meals are so decided to try especially as we could take advantage of the government scheme. Extremely well organised and social distancing in place. Lovely decorations and decor making it feel really cosy. Our starters were very quick in arriving. I had pate which was beautiful but not enough bread. My husband had the pork scratchings which he said were very nice but not enough dip. I’d ordered the special Chicken curry with rice but asked if I could have chips instead, I was told they couldn’t change the meals on the special board but I could order a portion of chips? Just seemed a little strange. Our meals arrived hubby had the belly pork which he said was really nice. My curry was lovely very creamy which may not have been to everyone’s taste. I also had the sticky toffee pudding which was the best I have tasted. A pleasant meal in beautiful surroundings with extremely friendly staff. My husband thought it was a little on the expensive side, but I throughly enjoyed everything. I will definitely be back again.

Ordered sunday dinner takeaway as was staying in a nearby Airbnb. A tenner a piece and a great choice meat. Great portion size. Pate we ordered as a starter also came with a lot of bread. Very impressed

We visited as a family on a Sunday night, we had to wait for a table as it was busy and they don't take bookings on a Sunday night. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, the decor is a real talking point and the staff were very friendly and helpful. There is a very varied menu, or the choice of a carvery, which we oppeted for, a good choice of meats beautiful homemade Yorkshire puddings and a great selection of vegetables, Followed by deserts from homemade bread and butter pudding, to iced caramel pudding, many to tempt you. Its well worth a visit,

I've been a couple of times before for sunday lunch which deserves a whole review all to itself it's so amazing! However, this is the first time I've visited on a friday evening and we were equally impressed. The service was really warm and friendly and the lady who came to take our drinks order instantly made us feel welcome. I chose the sticky chicken meal which was honestly the best chicken and rice meal I had ever tasted! Chicken cooked perfectly and the taste wasnt too overwhelming as sometimes sweet chilli dishes can be. My partner had gammon which he througherly enjoyed. The home cooked chips were delicious! The decor of the place was really tasteful and cosy and the ambiance of lighting perfect. Honestly the best pub meal we have had in ages. X

Popped across to see our friend's new house in Beckingham & came to the Gate for lunch. We all felt it was good value; we all chose items from the lunchtime specials with some onion rings to start. The only slight criticism is that I would prefer brioche buns for the Mad Cow & Silly Pigs sandwiches rather than the floury baps, but that's perhaps a personal thing.

My partner and I were part of a larger celebration group. Being vegetarian we were initially heartened to have a specific vegetarian menu. However, there we 2 glaring issues that confronted us. One of the choices was a bizarre concoction of a Mushroom Stroganoff with Brandy. Having cooked this dish regularly - Brandy would NOT be a logical alcohol addition. Furthermore, it tasted like the cooking of the dish was to put the un-burned off brandy in near the end of the cooking - which left the dish with an overpowering taste of Brandy - which was so unpleasant, my partner could not finish her dish.The second issue was portion size and cost. Being part of a larger group - it was obvious the size of the meat dishes was huge. My Veggie sausages and mash was tiny by comparison. However the price of the dish was on par with the meat dishes. As a vegetarian it is unbelievably galling to pay the same prices of meat dishes when the sources ingredients of always cheaper than meat; you basically feel like you are subsidizing meat dishes. Many places I have eaten have adopted a better pricing structure that the vegetarian dishes are cheaper. What made this particular annoying was the portion size - there was no actual vegetables in the dish - just mash! and the overall dish size was small. I was also suspicious that the "gravy" was not vegetarian too.The service and timeliness of the bulk serving was very admirable - given the size of the group. The decor of the place was a little over the top for my taste - but that's a minor aside.

Went here for a meal on Friday evening 4th of January.... I have to say let alone was the food fantastic as always and the atmosphere... Chris and jade and the team always go out of their way to make it such a lovely time... both myself and my partner both had ribeye steak and it was the best we’ve ever tasted the service second to none... locally I would NOT choose to eat anywhere else...

Fried food extremely greasy. Seats far too low for table. Should spend more on decent chef and less on tatty, over the top decorations.Staff lovely though

Just had a lovely Sunday lunch at The Gate . There were 7 of us - 3 of our grandchildren their parents and us ( grandparents). We found the staff very friendly, very good food and a pub with an excellent Christmas set of decorations- even a snow machine outside to help create the appropriate atmosphere . We will be back .

Visited again last night and as usual the food was excellent, there were 6 of us and the service was fantastic making sure that we were seated and our orders taken before a large party ordered theirs so that we weren’t waiting too long. We had a varied selection of starters, mains and desserts from across the menu and everything was cooked beautifully. I can’t believe that anyone can moan about the Christmas decorations as they are amazing, yes they are over the top but surely that’s the idea! It’s Christmas after all! Our table had one of the beautifully decorated trees on it and we definitely had no issues being able to speak to each other!! Will definitely be back as we love coming here for meals

I called by the local village pub at the weekend for a pint. Ordered at the bar and then was advised by the manager/owner rather rudely that this was not a pub but was a restaurant and refused to sell me a beer. Have been in there a number of times and this has never happened before.

As soon as you walked through the door the Christmas explosion hit you! Mad, completely over the top. We had arrived early to relax and have a drink before our meal - it was anything but relaxing.

Although we have been to Sutton-Cum-Lound quite a few times we have never been in The Gate Inn. It was my birthday and we were picking my daughter and husband up from Retford station so we picked the Gate Inn out for a change.

I’ve been looking for a cosy country pub with character in my local area for a little over a year, after moving to the area, but had never quite found anywhere that met my expectations - until I found the Gate Inn - what a gem!

Entering the Gate was a little like walking into Santa's grotto , and it's still November ! No doubting the effort and expense here , but OTT for some folks including me. The beer was good and my Gammon trimmed and cooked perfectly. It came with a nicely dressed and very fresh tasting salad but one of my eggs was a bit snotty. I couldn't really see much of the rest of the family's meals - or the rest of the family for that matter - because of the awkward 3 foot tall painted twig festooned with baubles in the middle of the table. We all enjoyed our mains and deserts though. I did notice the chips had an unpleasant , oily aftertaste and I wasn't the only one. Whether it's old oil or the 'three times cooked' process allowing oil to saturate the potato rather than seal it I'm not sure. The staff were lovely to us. We three fellas were amused , more like bemused , by the toilets. About a dozen large glittery baubles sitting in the urinal - what's that all about ? I'd like to go back to the Gate but , for me , not this side of Christmas and I wouldn't order the chips.

Visited on Saturday 16th November and they are definitely ready for Christmas, OMG over the top does not go far enough, if posting your life in social media is your thing this is the spot for you. Unfortunately the food wasn’t as good as the decor I ordered a Thai curry but it looked more like bubble a squeak it was a mush of mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and edamame beans with no sauce at all. I have never returned a meal, if it’s bad I just leave it and have a dessert so I don’t go hungry but my sister insisted it go back as she also thought it looked and tasted awful. They did change it without any fuss and the staff were really really good, unfortunately the hallumi burger replacement wasn't much better but my hubby ate that as I was too embarrassed to leave it on the plate the side salad was very nice though. Everyone else on the table of eight ate their meals but it was all just meat and chips so not much to go wrong really I do think it may have been that the chef is not that well practiced in the vegi options. I won’t go back because there are many places doing great vegi at the moment but if you’re a Christmas mad meat eater you really should visit, you will be talking about the decor for weeks and the staff really are lovely. Oh side note they also ran out of non flavoured gin..every flavour on the planet apart from gin flavour.

Second visit here. Again excellent and good service. Hopefully will now be a regular as have decided to move to the village from Buckinghamshire.

We visited as a family of 5. There was a good selection of meals, many with a twist. Great service and well worth a visit. Only downside disabled / wheelchair access poor.

I was visiting the area for the day to see family and booked here for lunch based on the reviews. Really impressed on several fronts, very friendly staff and lovely surroundings. We were amazed by the tasty food and the great value for money. My husband had eggs, ham and chips which looked fabulous, proper hand carved ham with great chips. I went for chicken in brandy sauce which was delicious. We shared a dessert - ginger pudding -again really good and huge portions. You will not be disappointed if you go here.

I cannot rate this pub/restaurant highly enough. We saw the amazing beer garden whilst passing and stopped for a drink. Loved it so much we came back the following evening for a meal. Extremely doggie friendly (we took our 12 week old springer). Food great - all homemade. Decor amazing. Staff so friendly and helpful. Just wish we weren’t on holiday and it was nearer to home! Visit you won’t be disappointed!

I have visited the gate inn quite regularly for the Sunday carvery and the standard of food and the excellent service is always a very good, Chris and his staff never fails to satisfy.

Have visited both for Sunday carvery and saturday evening dinner. Lovely, well cooked, plentiful food and good value for money. Staff friendly and helpful and a nice atmosphere.

We have visited a number of times for Sunday lunch and also for evening meals with family and also with other couples and cannot fault this place it is consistently good food and good value for money need I say more!

After a long week me and the other half decided we deserved tea out . We wanted somewhere we hadn’t been before so found ourselves at the gate. We didn’t book but they accommodated us in the bar area which was very nice . It may be wise to book we will next time .

It's been at least a 18 months since we visited the Gate Inn. The new owner and his staff could not do enough for us. The food was excellent served with a smile and not fussed over, the atmosphere was welcoming and comfortable. Tried the Sutton pie......it could feed a small family for a week, all courses were well presented and a level above normal pub cuisine. All told we enjoyed our visit and will be back to try the remainder of the menu. The meal did provide value for money and we are already looking forward to out next visit with our friends.

went with friends for a special meal and this place was a gem, lovely staff lovely food, good prices and my word the sutton cow pie you got to try it... i nearly finished it lol !! it is cooked fresh the food so you do have to wait but they make that clear and it is worth the wait look forward to the next visit.

I attended on Saturday having had it recommended to me. It is very tastefully decorated to say it is a public house with a room at the side for food . I just want to say that, in addition to a beautiful meal (The special board for £7.50 is absolutely incredible) we had a delightful waitress, Michelle. She had just the right balance of friendliness and efficiency. She recognized that we wanted time to visit and did not rush us. She and other staff members made certain that we had everything we needed. Please go try it you won't be disappointed my brother has tried several times without success so you must book in advance.

Met friends here as it was a halfway point for all of us. Staff were pleasant, friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, we all agreed that the food was very average. We won’t return but happy to give three stars for the service.

Rang prior to arrival , small vegetarian options. But gave it a try. Carvery is very good and popular,but the vegetarian meal would hardly pass as a snack in comparison. Would have been 5 stars if option at select vegatable pre cooked for carvery was made available to top / finish of the dish. Will try again but maybe not s sunday.

Perfect food, perfect service, fantastic value and 5 Star hygiene rating. Lovely clean facilities and spectacular floral displays. Delighted Mum and daughter. Well worth a visit.

Tucked away in this lovely village is this fantastic pub. A warm welcome awaits you by very friendly staff. Settle in the restaurant and choose from an extensive menu. Good size portions, freshly cooked and well presented. Off the beaten track a bit but once found you’ll be going back.

This was the first time I had been to The Gate, certainly not the last. The menu was very inviting with many dishes I would be keen to try. Today I went for the Jerked Chicken and was not disappointed. I look forward to our next visit.

We had a lovely family afternoon in the very glamorous and well designed beer garden. The food was absolutely gorgeous and most of the staff were lovely. My only criticism was that my Grandson aged 8 was only allowed a bowl to have his dinner piled into’ as a child size portion’. A smaller plate would have been a better choice!

An amazing night with great staff, the service was unbelievable and the food was outstanding. Beautiful seating area outside perfect for a cold beer!!

After reading great reviews about this place my family and I had high hopes but it just wasn't that great!

Hard to fault the place. The staff were friendly and attentive, food was excellent, and the whole place was clean, and tastefully decorated.

Absolutely fabulous meal, home cooked and very tasty. Plenty to choose from the carvery and plentiful. Definitely the best carvery around the Retford, Gainsborough, worksop area. We will definitely be back soon!

Visited here with my husband on a wednesday lunchtime. Smaller than i thought, from the pictures i had seen. The food is beautiful snd plentiful, staff are very nice. The only reason i didnt give 5 stars is because, in my opinion there are too many tables and people with walking sticks and frames struggle to get round.

If you don’t love it here there’s something wrong with you. Fabulous food, lots of choice and a good price range. Chris makes everyone welcome. The best place to eat in the area. Brilliant.
