Lovely pub that serves excellent food. I have been coming here for years with my family and the food has been consistently brilliant. I went on Sunday and I had the beef brisket whilst my family had the Turkey Roast, fish & chips and the rack of ribs. Whilst the service was a little slow because it was busy - it gave us the time to enjoy each others conversations. Please note this place does not take bookings so you may have to wait but trust me its worth it!

Absolutely appalling treatment. Waiting to be seated as a couple. Two couples came in after us and were seated whilst we were waiting. When queried, received an extremely rude response by the blonde woman who appeared to be in charge. Very unprofessional! Do not recommend this place particularly if you are of an ethnic minority, different rules seem to apply.

Having believed the spot of the Gate pub had been a tollgate, Mummy had always assumed this would be a very small pub, not much more than what you see from the road that almost passes through the roadside façade! Paranoid, for decades of busses crashing into said roadside wall, Mummy had avoided this pub until now! So, with trepidation, we ventured onto the corner of Barnet Road and Hendon Wood Lane. We found that in fact, the pub is rather large. And most of it safely distanced from the road! The gate that once stood on this point was simply to keep the animals under control. Though, this didn’t appear to work with human animals! Sat on the table next to us, were a rather raucous group of humanoids. And a very quiet dog. We (mummy, myself and a friend of Mummy), were just about to order as the wildebeests approached the neighbouring table. We almost chose not to order, but persevered. The group were friendly and, for this, I feel bad for my initial illthoughts. Opting for garlic bread and the Halloumi and avocado wrap, we were satisfied by the size, and amount of Halloumi and salad filling. However, we were all a little miffed to find a miserly teaspoon (low-heaped) amount of avocado. If the had been a shortage of avocado then perhaps better to mention that there would only be a tiny amount of the titled ingredient so to give customers the choice to order something else. If this is the usual amount the shame of the Gate! Staff is welcoming a friendly. With its fire place and homely decor, I would happily come here again, but would likely not order anything with avocado in it. UPDATE 2nd visit The only male in the group, I felt comfortable in the busy pub. We were here celebrating a friend's birthday (belated). Silky soft inside, the Halloumi sticks coating was a little greasy, but tasted fine. The Chablis, crisp on opening lost its va va boom and degraded to a flat stale cream that puts me off Chardonnay based wines, despite life ving Chablis Chardonnay. The Shiraz, mellowed on the same timespan but still hit a reasonable note though didn't have the spiciness one expects with Shiras I was so hungry that I will forgive the instant custard served with the small crumble. The staff is friendly and our Portuguese server was wonderful and even knew of me from Borehamwood!

We come in for a dinner tonight and let me just say service 10/10! Vince was amazing and made sure our drinks and everything was right& our waiter Luca was lovely and attentive! Thank you for a lovely evening.

Excellent service and good. Great value for money

A lovely looking pub with nice open-fires. Menu looked interesting but unfortunately I never got a chance to order as service was so bad. I don’t have an issue if places are busy or there are staff shortages. What I hate is poor service with a prime example being totally ignored by ALL the waiting staff every time I looked in their direction. Top tip for management: train your staff to say something like, “good evening. We are very busy tonight but I’ll be with you in 5 minutes’.”

Food generally good though some confusion over what was vegan in the vegan burger. It did get sorted out so not complaining but perhaps the staff should have been better taught.

When we lived in London we used to visit this pub very often and always have been good for food. However, after a couple of years, we went back last month and noticed that the staff/management had changed. Service was to the table and got several staff asking if we had decided what to eat after we already did, suddenly another one appeared with the food, etc etc... the food was still good, though.

10/10. Our server was Sky who was incredibly attentive and went the extra mile for us. We’ll be back ASAP.

The food is very average, but there is a good selection for everyone.

As regular customers but were very disappointed with the roast meal we were served. The potatoes were reheated and hard. The veg plain boiled and not honey glazed as described. This pub remains a convivial place to come to but the food served for the price was poor quality and unappetising.

Ordered the turkey roast from the christmas menu but the turkey and roast potatoes were very dry and didn't taste great.

Went for a birthday and had the roast beef, not what it used to be, was far better before, roast potatoes were rock hard, don’t know what the Yorkshire was meant to be? Sad as this place used to be very good, if I’m being kind, the food wasn’t even as good as a Toby carvery .

Lovely atmosphere, staff were warm and friendly, food served quickly and piping hot, very pleased for pub dinner. A little more classy than a normal pub. Will definitely be going back.

Visited last night again. Service still really bad but food very good. I would advise to order everything at the bar and don't bother with the waiting staff. Annoying when you see three standing around and chasing each other around the back of the bar. There needs to be a Manager there as the staff don't seem to be able to organise or motivate themselves. Cannot fault this pub for its food, yet again our meals were cooked to perfection but I always say I wish the portions were smaller and prices cheaper as I love the experience of three smaller courses. However today the service was atrocious and I felt uncomfortable. We received our starters without any problem but our mains were brought out by another server who clearly only had the remit of take those dishes to table 5, she presented them, didn't ask if we needed any sauces or any extra drinks but strangely didn't remove our starter plates and promptly disappeared. They were our companions for the rest of the meal. I managed to catch the eye of our original server and asked for another drink that never actually arrived but thankfully didn't get put on our bill. I shared my drink with my daughter. After our meal I caught the eye of our original server once more and asked for the bill which she brought to me. She asked if our meals were ok and I had to report that my daughter's partially eaten chicken pasta dish was very bland. The response was 'oh'. She then wandered off and proceeded to clear other tables of plates as I watched on and then she came over and cleared our table and then vanished leaving me with the bill on a silver plate somewhat bemused. I waited and waited and then decided life was too short to wait for someone who was clearly never going to return so I took my bill and paid at the bar. I gave the bar lady a potted history of my experience and she apologised saying they were short of staff?? I think maybe short of staff with a tad of warmth and common sense as to how to treat customers as it was all rudimentary.

Visited the pub for our annual lunch. The food was excellent (bit slow with the food) The staff are very friendly and attentive. Very good atmosphere given it wasn’t very busy. Great drinks selection and menu options. Definitely will be back again.

Food was lovely, atmosphere great, service painfully slow and we weren't the only customers anxiously looking around for the staff. I had the Hunter's Chicken which was very tasty.

Had Sunday Roast today. The potatoes had been largely overcooked or over-reheated, the beef was slightly warm and the veggies on the side were bland. The desserts were heavy but tasty. Considering the price, this is not good at all.

The turkey roast dinner was cold when it arrived.The roast potatoes too hard to cut.The food used to be excellent but has deteriorated over the past few months.

Service is excellent, food was amazing, a table of 4 and we all had something different and all enjoyed very much.

Be warned! They have (v) for vegetarian besides dishes which have been cooked in the same oil as fish; the breaded mushrooms are fried with the clamari, for example. We found this out when we mentioned that my partner has a severe allergy to fish. Without mentioning this, the results would have been dangerous if he'd eaten the non-vegtarian food item, labelled incorrectly.

Very very disappointed on our Sunday visit. Family of 8 attended here on 12/11/23. Me and my elderly mother ordered the roast Turkey. To my surprise the potatoes were frozen inside… the vegetables were cold and the Turkey was cold and dry. I returned my plate of food within an instant without a replacement. My brother and father ordered the beef roast which they didn’t enjoy and after two hours they have now became ill by being sick together with a belly ache. After spending in total of £180 I’m absolutely disgusted with the food quality. Frozen roast potatoes is not I would expect from The gate and cold Turkey together with cold hard carrots and to finish off with a family of being sick and ill. Never would I return or recommend The gate to anyone. Thank you for providing the worse food.

What a terrible experience. Food was nothing special potatoes were hard .And the staff were not child friendly at all.wouldnt even let me take them in the garden for some fresh air .would not use again .

Lovely lunch. Food was amazing! Pub nice and warm and cozy too. Not sure if they have a nest chef but the food certainly was fantastic. Beautiful presentation too. Hunters chicken. Gorgeous.

Review has changed as the roast beef came very dry and hard. Service was very slow compared to a few months ago when Iast went. Not my first choice for q roast now.

Ah, the Gate. We've revisited this gastro pub many times and it never fails to impress. It's a shame that many locals are aware of its excellence, as it can get very busy and parking can require some creative driving or parking across the road. However, once you manage to secure a spot and make your way inside, the welcoming atmosphere will make you forget all about the parking struggles. The service is always top-notch, even on the busiest of nights or weekends. The staff are friendly and efficient, and they go out of their way to make sure you have a great experience. The menu may not vary greatly over the years, but that's because they've already perfected it. Each dish is consistently good, from the classic fish and chips that are always spot on, to the generous and tasty steak and ale pie. They simply keep a high standard year after year and never fail to deliver. Overall, the Gate is a fantastic gastro pub that we keep returning to for a reason. Despite the parking challenges and the crowds, we know that once we're inside, we'll be treated to great food and excellent service. It's a must-visit for anyone in the area, and we'll definitely be back again soon.

Starters are well priced and gorgeous to eat, mains are slightly pricey for the quality but overall lovely atmosphere, Kerr/lly also provided quality service during my experience

I stopped today for lunch with my boyfriend. I ordered 2 starters, to eat as a main. The Potato skins came up luke warm, and the same with the chicken wings ! I sent both back, and had to wait a further 10 to 15 minutes before my food returned ! The sauce on the chicken was far too hot.. My bf had Hunters Chicken, which he said was average. I wasn't overly impressed, and will not be returning. The waitress staff were pleasant.

Friendly staff, very reasonably priced food and the gourmet burger is one of the best I've ever tasted.

Visited for an early dinner on a late Saturday afternoon. Even then it was very busy which should say enough. Food was tasty and very large portions. The starters could have been a bit smaller as they were quite filling. It's worh noting if paired with another side the potato skins could easily constitute a full meal. The beef & ale pie could have done with a smaller pastry lid as there was a lot of it. The pub itself has a great aptmosphere and friendly and attentive staff, however parking can get be difficult so I would minimise the number of cars you travel in if you are a large group.

A close friend's 60th Birthday celebration, when he kindly arranged a table for 10 friends and relations in this quite impressive and large Public House & Restaurant. Some 50% of the premises, is a pleasant and traditional Pub, with the rear an addition of a very large high roofed modern dome / fabricated ceiling with room for a guesstimated 20 - 30 + tables.. the restaurant and pub were both very busy, so in this area, we were not feeling isolated, but midweek, with the height and size of this dining area, I think you might have felt a little lonely: Its certainly, with the traditional old exterior frontage and traditional area for 50% of the premises. to then enter a mini Millennium Dome area, seems a strange mix, although for 'covers', it probably works. See the web page for the comprehensive menu..very varied, but with the traditional pub fayre well catered for, also a dish of the day board: My wife had no starter and the fish & chips..must have been unlucky as she had more batter than fish on this ample portion; to my left the same for one of the guests, although he had a better sized fillet of fish! I had the 'Crispy' Calamari , which wasn't, but still edible, with the Lamb Shank, chips and green beans. The meal was perfectly presented and the lamb excellent, but lukewarm, apart from the chips which were very hot. I had two scoops of ice cream for sweet, but again, whether left for too long in the kitchen awaiting collection, melting, although taste of good quality, but simply 'plonked' in the bowl..presentation zilch. In summary the visit, as title; whilst busy the young waitress coped well with this large area.. the male waiter bringing the food tried his best, but further drinks service was slow..either understaffed or not adequately trained..polite accepted, but little interaction with clients. Maybe the advert on the entrance door said it all, 'Chef required'. A first visit, so maybe a bit unfortunate or unlucky, but something wasn't conducive for a really enjoyable visit, other than the company we had for a 60th celebration.

Me and my wife had Shepherds Pie. It was almost inedible. Far far too salty. We told the waiter who responded by presenting us with a full bill. No reduction to what was a fairly overpriced meal to start with. Won't be going back.

We ordered the nut roast from the Sunday Roast menu from the board. The nut roast was dry, roast potatoes been cooked for ages - like cafeteria foods. Awful not freshly cooked at all. Always order from the menu. Told the waitress the food was overcooked but she took no notice.

Came here to bring friends visiting from the US to give them a pub dinner experience. Absolutely gutted we made this choice. Service was poor, after the first drinks we were never asked if we wanted another even though waiting staff walked past our table of empty glasses, eventually we had to hail someone to serve us. After food was served we were never asked if all was ok or if we needed anything else - this is basic. Food was just ok sadly. I suspect there’s a lot of microwaving happening in the kitchen. The wings starter came to the table looking like a congealed pile with no steam rising, yet when you started pulling off the wings steam appeared. The treacle pudding desserts were cold but the bowl was hot, had to return them. Paid for the bill and was never asked if we enjoyed the meal, maybe they don’t want to hear the answer…

The food is always good here although I would like to see parsnips. The real ale is very poor quality and unworthy of the Londo Pride it claimed to be it was in dreadful condition and tasted awful, do not order real ale here they do not know how to keep it in top condition.

This pub was very busy on Sunday afternoon. We only had a couple of half pints. They managed to provide good service and we didn't have to chase them to settle up. OK selection of beers, but not many craft beers. Not a complaint, just a note that it isn't a destination for craft beer lovers.

very good atmosphere, the food let's say not so good, I ordered steak and I ordered it medium rare, inside good but burned outside, it wasn’t pleasant to eat, I understand that it is a pub and there is no table service but still no one checked again How was the food, but my steak was not good. The waitress arrived at the end to collect the plates but never to check how the food was, for the price they charge they should, it's a shame ,I will don’t come back again

A fantastic gastro pub! Service is Spot on and the food is delicious. The parking issues have been addressed by having an overflow car park with ample space even at the busiest of times.

Generally nice place to eat and chat. Sometimes have to push the staff for better service, though they are responsive and rushing to serve and help, so not their fault, could be due to understaffing at times.

Nice outside area, good food reasonably priced, everything is clean, the service is efficient and the staff are friendly. there is also a wide variety of beers etc. Downside limited car parking on site, always have anxiety that my car is going to get whacked by someone's 4x4. There is an overflow car park nearby, but I have never managed to find it. The bus stop is close by though.

This is the first time we have been to The Gate in many years, and we were pleasantly surprised. The garden/patio has had a complete makeover, and is great for winter or summer. The food and service were brilliant, and not rip off prices. We will certainly return.

The service was terrible waited half hour for a drink and had to find a member of staff to ask for service 3 times. Chicken wing starter avoid more sauce then chicken. Roast dinner was awful potato’s under cooked and Yorkshire over cooked to a burnt crisp. Lots of staff but was ignored. Very disappointing

Food was very poor. My grandmother ordered a beef burger, the bun was stale and when we finally got the attention of staff to ask them to change it, they brought back a new one that was ripped up and clearly just thrown in the microwave - it was disgusting. Given the hefty price tag, you’d at least expect decent chips. I then ordered an apple caramel pie for dessert, and I was given a bowl of custard with a slither of apple pie drowning amongst the mass. Again, disgusting. The service was very inattentive, we had to call out to get any attention. I would not recommend for dinner.

Great local go-to with delicious pub classics in generous portions. Only drawback is no booking and a small car park that gets busy at peak times. Lovely staff and great service.

Worst Sunday lunch. Ordered the beef. The potatoes were definitely store bought out the freezer. The carrots were just boiled. The beef was stringy and overdone. The greens were heavily buttered. The gravy was oxo (that's how it tasted). The yorkshire pud was OK. Nothing was seasoned. Two of the servers were lovely. One was awful. Lastly the Guinness was very watered down. I really don't understand why this place has so many good reviews. Obviously won't go back, wish I had said something at the time but tbh I was extremely hungry (the weight was lengthy). Given the price, I would expect better.

Roof opens like centre court Wimbledon. Such a great addition. Really good service and at last, somewhere that serves vegetarian cottage pie..... yummy.

I would call this place a restaurant and not a pub- table service only. The menu has a good selection of options, including appealing specials. The service is prompt and friendly. The main area felt quite warm in terms of ambiance. We sat in the enclosed patio as we had dogs with us. The beer garden looked great but unfortunately it was raining so we could not try it out. The food was good but nothing to make effort to experience (the pie was good but the veggies on the side were mushy. The chicken tortilla was good but the salad on the side was blah). I would suggest this as a great option for a family group to enjoy a nice meal.

Here I am again, please see my last review of October 19th. 2019 Service at the table remains with helpful waiters & waitresses. I ordered the the Sunday beef roast without vegetables. The chef filled the plate with extra potatoes.... Well I think he was trying to make the next potato famine. The food was absolutely delicious, but I couldn't finish all the potatoes, and asked for a 'doggy ' bag, which I have never done before in my whole life. It took 2 plastic containers to transport the spuds. Can't fault the food, presentation, service and price Looking forward to my next visit Cannesdid ..... surfingsyd

Great Restaurant/Bar, good selection of wine and spirits, plenty of free parking, open fire places, vintage interior, friendly staff, delightful atmosphere

Have been coming to this place on and off for years. Absolutely brilliant. Excellent meal. Home cooked food. Good selection on menu and specials board. Reasonable prices. Friendly staff. Clean and tidy. Nice conservatory area for dining. Garden area too. Ample parking. So pleased this place remains the same. Their sister pub (The Fisherman in Stevenage) was taken over by McMullens and, sadly, hasn't been the same since. Long may The Gate remain. Thank you for a lovely meal. Highly recommend.

I have been several time with my girlfriend we love this restaurant and pub

Had a lovely lunch in The Gate recently. Had the Stake and Ale Pie which was just " melt in your mouth " full of taste. Every thing looks so fresh and clean. If you have never been here before, make sure you add it to your wish list. Highly recommended. Wonderful hosts and staff.

Popular pub. Good atmosphere good service but food hit and miss. Fish and chips fine. Chips dry. No idea why green beans with steak which should have had butter pat. My daughters supposedly “ gourmet” burger was very dry and tasteless and at around £17...

Only 1 Ale - not allowed to order at the bar! Slow table service to order drinks despite it being a Monday Lunchtime!!! Left and enjoyed a meal elsewhere!

Sunday lunch with friends. Food very good. Very wide choice, maybe too much? Service very friendly but quite slow, but to be fair very busy on a lovely sunny day. Good outdoor space. We went at 2pm and got table no problem. Might have been more difficult if we went earlier? They don't take bookings so you have to take a chance.
