Phoned up to place a timed order to collect. When we arrived to collect waited further 30 minutes. Part of the order was missing and part of it Luke warm. Not very tasty and rubbish service. Avoid to avoid being disappointed .

This is the worst restaurant I have ever been to. The food was tasteless and the service was slow due to them serving take away customers in preference to seated guests. I see this restaurant currently has a 1 star Food Standards Agency hygiene rating. Save your money and eat elsewhere.

Really tasty food. We liked it so much we went back the following day. The lamb was tender. We also enjoyed the onion Bhajis and other starters. It is right in the centre of town with a good view across the high street. The service was friendly and attentive. Overall we were really pleased.

We live locally and generally have a takeaway and haven’t had a bad one. Garlic Chicken Tikka and Beef Madras, Sag Aloo, cauliflower bahji, pillau rice but we have tried others and not been disappointed. We have also eaten there with friends, the bonus is that the restaurant is unlicensed so you can take your own tipple (Co-op and Spar at the bottom of the High Street). True to quirky Bishops Castle form you can take a pint from the Three Tuns pub 100m away and return the glasses.

The food was excellent , the poppadoms and naans beautifully fresh and the main courses well cooked. It was busy , with a large party in and plenty of take away orders as it was a Saturday night , so the service was a bit slow but the staff were friendly and it was good value . I would certainly go again .

Very tasty food and excellent value. We had a chef's menu for 2, and it didn't disappoint. The fruit lassi is recommended, we both enjoyed it. We arrived in the middle of a mad hour with the restaurant full and endless takeaway orders being taken and fulfilled, which made service very slow. Once the crazy rush subsided, the staff were very welcoming.

Just had what was without doubt the worst curry I’ve had for many years. It started badly with soft poppadoms. My sagwala which was essentially 4 pieces of tandoori chicken, spinach and peas! There was no sauce and no flavour or spice. The services was also poor. Oh and the toilet was broken. Definitely won’t be back!

Our family and friends have been coming here for years, but on the last two visits over the past few months, I don’t know if it has changed hands , but the portions size has gone down, the orders the first time in April the meal just didn’t taste right but was definitely not as it used to be, this time weekend of the 14th April I thought I’d order my usual favourite and also my wife had her usual , sadly again portion size had gone down and mine had pieces of chicken ticks in not all was chicken ticks but at least two pieces and was not in the description my wife’s also had pieces of chicken that looked like it had been cut into and certainly much harder than the other pieces and she felt that it was probably recycled from what had come back ??? Whatever it didn’t taste the same and certainly wasn’t the same quality, if they are going to drop their standards and want to keep their regular customers they are going have to up their game, I feel that two visits with the same results means that it is very doubtful that we will not be going again &will be looking for an alternative, sorry as we have been going to the Ganges for years

Don’t even think the one rating is deserved!! Away for the weekend and looking forward to an Indian takeaway on Sunday evening. Drive 20 mins to pick it up and got back to find my Saag Aloo dish was missing. Great start. Ordered a chicken shaslick bhuna, tipped it onto the plate and it stayed the shape of the container it came in, it was a thick, tasteless congealed mess, not the rich sauce that was advertised. The onion bhajis were so hard you couldn’t even bight into them and the chips looked like they were warmed up from two nights ago. If I wasn’t staying so far from the place it would of all gone into a food recycling bag and I would of taken it back and demanded my money back. Worst takeaway I’ve ever had!!!!

If you don’t mind being watched eating then this place is for you. The 2 waiters stood and watched every mouthful.. the curry is tasteless, the nan bread is a sloppy mess, the restaurant is very old fashioned and small, the couple next to us might as well have been sat on the same table, plates are very dated, rice comes in the water. Chutney tray is cold orange water, a lumpy mango and a full onion. We were waiting on Ant & Dec to jump out and say prank! Only reason I have given 1 star is because there’s no choice for 0. Entertainment consisted of a local questioning the price to be told it’s April we add £2 on to the bill.. a Indian lovers nightmare

We visited on a wet and wild Saturday night in February, as we were staying in a nearby campsite. We booked ahead but had the restaurant to ourselves. The restaurant itself is small but clean. The waiter was lovely - attentive but also gave us time to make our choices. The restaurant doesn't serve alcohol but they're happy for you to take your own in, and will happily provide glasses. We ordered a mixed starter to share and it was delicious - sheek kebabs, homemade bhajis and pakoras. Our mains were chicken roshuni and a house special dish. Both were lovely, and not too hot, meaning you could actually taste the flavours. No desserts, but I had a coffee cream. Some other reviews on here have suggested that the prices are expensive, but I don't know where they're eating as the prices are in line with what we pay at home. We would definitely recommend the Ganges to anyone looking for a relaxed, tasty meal in the area

Whilst holidaying in Bishop’s Castle this week we passed by The Ganges restaurant several times and decided to dine here on our last evening in the town. Firstly we had a pre dinner drink in The Vaults public house. The regulars there thoroughly recommended The Ganges and told us that it was a BYO and that we were welcome to carry our drinks back up the hill to The Ganges which we did. We entered a small restaurant with beamed ceiling and sufficient space for 24 guests, but the takeaway business as we sat eating our meal was brisk. The menu offered a good selection. We started with a couple ofpoppadoms and chutney followed by Bangla Special and Pilau rice and Mr W chose Lamb Tikka Jalfrezi. The meal was delicious and the owner who has been in Bishop’s Castle 26 years was very friendly. A takeaway service / delivery is also available.

Bishops Castle was fairly quiet on a Sunday night so after a couple of excellent beers in the Six Bells and Three Tuns (both brew their own) we ate at The Ganges. We took our own beers, for which they provided glasses and a jug of (free) iced water. We enjoyed a very tasty Popadom & Pickles starter, Beef Balti & Pillau Rice and a very nicely flavoured dry (no sauce) diced chicken dish with salad. I asked for extra green chilli with my dish and at first they brought a watery orange yoghurty bland sauce? but once clarified, replaced it with a small plate of simple chopped green chillis, perfect. Total £21, exactly as advertised, with friendly service. Clean modern restaurant right opposite the Three Tuns. Will go again when we return and recommend it.

I got a takeaway here, whilst spending a few days in the area. I do like a bit of heat in my curries, I usually go for chili masala so went for a similar chicken option, described as fairly hot, and containing green chilis. I had sag paneer as a side. I can honestly say that both were the most bland dishes I have ever eaten from an Indian restaurant. The main dish lacked any heat, aside from a couple of green chilis in the sauce. There was no real depth of flavour or taste of spice otherwise, the base tasted of onion and undercooked garlic. It was unseasoned and fundamentally just tasteless. The side dish was basically cooked spinach with a few bits of paneer in it, again no spice flavour or seasoning. On getting it out of the bag there had been some leakage en route as is usual, but for the first time ever I noted that it wasn't the usual coloured oil, which you expect, but water. If I was local I wouldn't be returning a second time. I know some people frown on salt and oil, but I expect some of both in a curry.

Very basic mediocre restaurant with no atmosphere. I ordered the Castle special which sounded appealing when reading the menu. The reality was somewhat different. I have never tasted Indian food which was so bland and tasteless. There was no flavour in the meal whatsoever, beans on toast is much more flavoursome. My wife ordered the Persian Biryani which again on the menu sounded appealing and she assumed the banana it referred to would be cooked banana flavoured in with the other ingredients. What a surprise she got when she lifted the omelette and underneath was a peeled banana. One couldn't make it up.Go the chippy instead, you will enjoy it more.

After working a week in Welshpool and living off fast food and snacks, I was really in the need of some "proper" food heading home. Some colleagues recommended this place to me saying it had reasonable prices. It was a little out of my way home, but I was up for the journey. It's not the biggest of places and when I got there it was pretty full, but it looked very organised and clean. The staff were helpful from the start and very courteous. They said that they're just going to clean the table of a couple that have just left and that I could order a drink while I waited and they also gave me a menu so I could start thinking of what to order once at the table. They were done and I was seated in less than 5 minutes. My order was taken instantly as I sat down. The food was presented to me within 10minutes and came piping hot. It was all that delicious, I even ordered another to take away and have when I get home.Absolutely fantastic little place, from the staff to the food. I was impressed with it all.

This place has the monopoly and it shows. Friendly staff but food generally seems to be made for people who have had a lot to drink.

Me and the missis decided to have a takeaway - one in Craven Arms was shut / out of business so we went the BC and the Ganges - its proved axcellent. Our order was taken extremely courteously, we popped to the Vaults for a quick pint / drink and 15 mins later were back to collect. Once home we dined in style and enjoyed the hot spicy Jalfrezi, poppadums and stuff and the side dish was excellent too. Real value and a great quick fox. Recommended.

We chose the Ganges on the basis of it being half way between us and our son. As a result we had no particular expectation other than what you usually expect from an Indian restaurant outside the big cities-i.e. a decent curry with the usual trimmings. But what we found was a real gem - an extensive menu for a start which all looked really appetising. We mused as to whether the food lived up to the menu, then a voice nearby (from a guy waiting for a takeaway) assured us it was the case. And by golly it was. Four exceptional starters followed by equally exceptional mains, all served by a very personable young man who was both friendly, polite and efficient. I forgot my glasses and he leant me his ! Some negatives on here have said this is too small a place - but if it was serving French cuisine they would probably say it exudes chic bijou charm ! Can never understand why an Indian restaurant has to be big, but there we are. I would not hesitate to recommend this place - prices are really reasonable and as it doesn't have a licence you bring your own wine or whatever and save huge amounts through that. I'd guess because there are not too many tables it is worth booking.

It has seating for 24 people. It's cosy, small, and uncomplicated. Service was prompt, although the only other people in the restaurant had already been served. The food was good, not plentiful; the price reasonable; and the service cheerful. Set in one of Shropshire's most charasmatic towns, it's right in tune. For a first visit, it was a positive experience. Definitely worth considering on a future visit.

We were lucky to get a table on a Saturday night although we did book. I had a seat with my head just under a cupboard and I hit it more than once as well as wobbling into the stair well. As other reviews will say its a small restaurant smaller than my living room. The staff are very efficient and attentive. The food was good and the menu had dishes I had never heard of , which has to be a surprise. Great poppadum's and pickle tray, we shared a prawn on puri and my tandoori mixed grill was excellent just wish I could have gone for King Prawns as the one I had was wonderful.

The best Indian restaurant in Bishops castle by far, and also the only one. The Ganges Is a very small unlicensed Balti with an extensive menu, chilled drinks can be purchased at the co-operative supermarket just a short walk down the road. I had the Ruposhee fish starter which was very nice followed by a mixed balti which was served in a traditional black balti bowl (not a big fan of the usual shiny steel bowls). The curry contained no excess oil and had just the right madras heat, the staff were friendly and the food was served quickly. The Ganges food quality was on par with restaurants in Wolverhampton, Lye or even Birmingham.

My wife and I were staying in a cottage a few miles outside of Bishops Castle and called into the Ganges Restaurant early one Wednesday evening. The restaurant is quite small, but is a nice friendly restaurant in a nice friendly town. It is open from early evening until 12 midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 12.30pm on Friday and Saturday. It doesn't serve alcohol, but that didn't concern us, although you can apparently take in your own bottles (they don't charge corkage). The food, though, is well presented and has a more delicate taste than most other Indian restaurants, while still remaining spicey. The menu was quite extensive. My wife had a lamb sylheti with fresh salad and naan, while I enjoyed a vegetable dupiaza and naan. The prices were very reasonable and even the music was a step up from most other Indian restaurants we have visited. We hope to be visiting the area again before too long and we look forward to eating here again.

Christmas party for a sports club… serving 22 people with hot tasty old will always be a challenge but they did it well! Popadoms as a pre with all the normal sides, the starters were very good, good variety and served with a nice garnish. Mains as a buffet, 4 different curry’s, even though I’m not a vegetarian the veggie option was very good! Topped off of after eight mints (my favourite!)

I had a minor issue previously which was more than sorted in my next order. This meal OMG I cannot express how good it was. After my starter I was full half way through the main, but I could not stop, it was that good, so back to licking the dish :)

When the restaurant is busy it's very noisy. Probably because there is no carpet down. The food is very good.

Used to enjoy Chicken Ceylon but evidently it is not the same dish anymore, perhaps the chef has changed but there is very little evidence of any coconut and it now tastes like any other curry dish. Disappointed.
