Good salt and pepper chips and nice staff

We had a delivery tonight and the curry sauce was cold, the chicken chow mein was really gloopy and not edible, the beef satay wasn’t nice, the special fried rice with sauce was swimming in sauce! The only nice thing was the Salt and pepper chicken bites these were good.

As a family of 5, 3 of which are coeliac, it’s almost impossible to find a takeaway that does gluten free Chinese. We visited for the first time tonight and it was amazing. Thank you so much :)

Just ordered from The Friary for delivery to Great Harwood, Absolutely fantastic food, singapore chow mein, fried rice, mixed vegetables, ginger and spring onion sauce, sweet and sour sauce and a potion of chips, everything tasted amazing and was piping hot, was the best chinese food we have had in a long time, Restaurant quality.

Once again i didn't listen to my hubby and said they can't mess it up again ,how wrong was i. £17.60 was the cost for chips and gravy,small curry sauce sausage ,fish and gravy, although id ordered Fish and chips(,we only got fish and gravy with a lemon floating round). What i rip off. Last time they forgot the chips , seems to be a regular occurrence when we go. Even got it wrong when we ordered from work.

Seems as though the prices increase each week. 11 pounds for a sweet and sour chicken, add 4 for the fried rice and 17 pounds for a combination starter for 2!!! Food was good but we won't be returning at these prices

Consistently good ! Fish is freshly cooked and chips light and non greasy Have been going since it opened as my wife and I live in Whalley . Better than some of the fish and chip shops we have been to in Cornwall as we visit 2 or 3 times a year Staff always very polite and helpful

Went in for family tea was greeted by rude miserable staff we was charged near £40 for awful overcooked fish couldn’t cut into the awful batter the curry sauce was tasteless and it had spilled all over the bag. The Chicken burger was dry no lettuce or anything for the price and my sons looked like it was thrown in the box. None of it was up to standard for the price we paid !! We were all left hungry will not return here !

Ordered special Chow mein, no onion or peppers received thick soup with meat vegetables odd onion piece. No noodles. Rice was served with spring onions garnish. I'm intolerant to onions

To say these were the best tasting fish and chips we’ve ever had is something ! Good quality fish and great size and the chips were so so nice Peas were Lovely also and they stayed piping hot all the way home . They have a huge Chinese food menu also which we will try sometime soon Highly recommend

Food is good and staff ok (why so many young girls though)? The issue I have is their prices. They’ve really rocketed since COVID. I know people have to get their money back somehow but my usual has gone from £6.90 to £10.90 in perhaps 18 months. I went for a takeaway recently for me, my wife and daughter. £30! It’s a chippy..!! Last time unfortunately.

Contacted The Friary to ask if they had vegan chips and were told they could fry them separately in oil instead of dripping and the mushy peas were vegan...called for tea with three friends after a walk and ordered four chips and mushy peas. We sat in a small seating area just near the bus station. I took a flask with vegan gravy for pouring (shame The Friary gravy is only vegetarian). The food was delicious a good sized portion excellent chips and peas. Love the eco friendly packaging too. Highly recommended.

This place just gets better, and too many people seem to know now. It is virtually impossible to make a telephone order during the weekend, so we have opted for chinky Tuesdays instead. Can't wait for Tuesdays!

In a long line of people being redirected to the cash machine as for some inexplicable reason in the 21st century they only take cash in the shop.

Food wasn't as good as it could be. Somehow, we couldn't pay cash. Chips were okay but cold. Quite a wait time too. Steak and kidney pudding was good.

The Friary has been my regular for fish & chips for many years - but it will be a long time before I revisit. My order of 2 x fish & large chips was slow in coming (I've given up on pre-ordering with Just Eat because (as others have stated) they don't prepare your order until you arrive and you just joint the queue. 3 groups arrived after me, ordered and received their food before me. And (unusually) the staff were sullen and sour-faced. But my main issue was the food - it was TERRIBLE! £17.30 for 2 fish and large chips and the fish was inedible and smelt awful. And soggy chips too. All house windows open to clear the odour. Really disappointed as this was our 'regular'. It'll be a while before I return.

Ordered food online at 5 pm,was told to pick the order up at 5:20,,I arrived at 5:19 only to have yo wait until 5:40 for the order to be done,the Chinese food was bland and lacked flavour,chips were undercooked,we have ordered here before and had it delivered and that was 30 mins late and cold,probably better off going in and ordering at had till,they seemed to get their food a lot quicker than me.

Chips were scrappy and the cod was a disgrace, it was so thin they put 3 layers of fish together to make 1 thick fish. Get your act together. Only managed to eat half of it, trying to find the chunky soft chips and the best part of the fishes. Never again.

Food is gross and dry. Staff are absolutely beyond rude. Wish I could give it minus stars. I got food poisoning and thought I’d never see another day. AVOID THIS HORRIBLE PLACE.

We ordered from here and received our £50 order + £6 delivery with a missing dish. When we rang up they were extremely rude and laughing on the other end of the phone, then started throwing cheeky comments our way. Food was well below average especially for the price. Would not recommend, and wouldn’t eat again.

Tried Chinese food from this place and both me and my partner ended up very ill, will not be ordering here again, on the plus side very good way to lose weight quickly, although lost a day of work as well.

My husband and I have been to The Friary several times and thoroughly enjoyed all our meals - both Chinese and chippy. The salt and pepper chicken pieces are incredible! Staff are very friendly, food fresh and tasty and we will be back again!

Our first visit to the Friary and the quality of the the food was absolutely fantastic. No wonder it was so busy!

I live just outside the village, its the closest chippy to where I live, since day 1 the "girls" employed are rude, have less personality than the fish they serve and the prices are beyond a joke, I'm used to Ribble Valley prices but this is now beyond funny. Its not even great food and the portions are small, it takes absolutley ages to get served. Want to get it delivered? well that will cost you an extra £5.00. Its great to read the responsed to the negative reviews here from the owners, clearly you beleive your own hype and dont think you can improve. Its chaos inside your shop with 5-6 girls behind the counter all arguing with each other, you only need 2 decent staff behind the counter to run a busy chippy. Why not visit some of the other chippys in the area to see how its done properly. I was taking to someone recenty who used to use you every week, they feel the prices are now excessive and the quality has gone down hill. They dont use you anymore as I'm sure literally 100's of other people dont. Would be great to geta positive response to the negative comments but I expect a sarcastic reply.

Have eaten here multiple times now and it’s always been excellent. The beef in black pepper is my favourite, the chunks of beef are little bits of steak…soooo good!!

Awful. Heard some good reports so we tried it. The food is poor quality and certainly not fresh. Tried various dishes and all quite disgusting. Greasy, processed, frozen food. Binned it all, complete waste of money. Avoid

Before you go in there's a huge sign over the door stating only one person allowed inside at any time. There's typically four of five people standing in there and others hanging around outside. When you go in – regardless of the time, day or however busy it might be, there's a horde of young staff that literally eye you up and down like you're offensive. They have about four or five staff behind the counter falling over and bumping into each other I'm not sure what the reason for them all being there is unless they're friends of friends of the owners but it's not doing the service any favours. If you order online via Just Eat or whatever, they don't bother even starting to prep your order at all until you have actually arrived so you'll wait the 20-30 mins or whatever expecting that when you get there, you only need show them the reference number, pick up and run and then when you get there, they lazily make a start and have you hanging around like a plum for another 10 mins getting it ready. £2.50 for a bag of chips covered in crap paper that sticks to and pulls half the chips off with it. Seven massive sheets of paper to wrap the chips with. Crap chips when you've got inside all that paper and salvaged what's left from the chips stuck to the top. Real shame too when the young lads took over from its previous owners and first opened up it was great food, great service and the lads were always friendly, welcoming and really went out above and beyond. Don't see either of them any more just the young staff utterly abhorrent to the sight of everyone and the food has joined in as well.

Rang to order delivery to be to be told minimum £20 order. I have ordered before for one which was a lot less than £20 and it has been delivered. I live on my own and am disabled and wouldn't be ordering £20 as it would be wasted. Very unfair

The times i have been in this chippy the staff are just stood there chatting and all on there mobiles then touching food theres more germs on a mobile than a toilet seat disgusting they always get your order wrong to late once you have Driven home and the prices are a rip of never again if u any sense go elswhere

So this was the 2nd time I've been to the friary. Once was last year and I swore I would never go back. Last minute decision to give it another try last night due to lack of other options. Absolutely shocking food. Pies were gristly and pale. No filling at all. Appeared to have been re warmed. Peas were cold and tasted like water - and for a large - there wasn't many at all and the chips were dry and awful. My husband and I had stomach ache straight after we ate (the little we could) and woke up with the same stomach ache. So do yourself a favor and make some pasta instead.

Please dont waste your money eating here. It has to be the worst chippy food i have ever tasted and my stomach the day after can vouch for that. Chips were bland and the peas tasted like water, the pie well that went in the bin. The staff are either chatting or rude with no customer skills what so ever. If the chinese takeaway next door was open on a Tuesday I would have never eaten here. Save yourself the botger dine elsewhere ...

Ok the food quality is amazing. However I have to drop a couple of stars, firstly because the prices are exceptionally higher than average (perhaps you could argue you pay for the quality). But I must also highlight that an order I placed was missing a dish, upon realising I've call the restaurant multiple times, now bareing in mind this was 15 minutes before closing and clearly they were either busy or just didn't want to answer the phone. So had no choice but to try again the next day. Which I did but the person I spoke to then refused to refund and said I should have came back the previous night when I realised... I mean, seriously??? If they don't answer the phone and would be closed before I get there how is this my fault to now pay for a dish I never got? I have not been back in 12 months now because of this.

Order over the phone and it is ready to pick up by the time you have got there, fast and efficient service. Excellent Chinese takeaway.

Ordered a take away for delivery at 4.30pm, quite happy to take the money but no answer on the phone and no food delivered.

Most disappointing! Rude, abrupt and surly staff, only one size of fish????? Scrappy chips! Sloppy battered fish no option to pay contactless!!! And to top it all expensive! one large chips, 2 fish and a small mushy peas £13.10!!! And no face masks being worn by any staff either and no screen! Last time I shall be visiting! Stop resting on your laurels!

I called here last week and found the food was good. But the young lady who served me had no personality. Sorry, but it must be an age thing ?? Also none of the staff were wearing masks As someone who had my own retail business in a nearby town for 25 years, I would not have found this acceptable from my staff. On reflection I should have asked her “ Did she enjoy her job?”

It amazes me it has any good reviews at all .. it's not a chippy, it just pretends to be !! The fish is limited to haddock and the portions are half the standard size you get in the other two chippies in town and the chip portion is great if you're a child. Coupled with the fact it's over priced too .. One to avoid!! Whalley is crying out for a good chippy .. wouldn't be hard to beat this one hands down!! I'm not codding!!

I've used this chippy several times this year, consistently good quality food and service, also prices what you would expect. However, this evening no staff at all wore face coverings or face shields, even though this is now legally required, all customers I saw did wear them and a sign on shop window requested this.

Best fish and chips I have had in ages.

Last visit we tried Chinese. That was tasteless and over priced. This visit tried the fish and chips. There will not be a third visit. What fish and chip shop only serves COD as a “special” once a week? Basically you have to have haddock which is a much cheaper fish and in my opinion not as nice. For £4.50 a piece of fish you’re expecting a normal piece. What you get is actually HALF a filet. Yup. Not only cutting costs with using haddock only, they are literally cutting costs but cutting the fish in half. To say I was shocked at the hand sized portion when I opened the box is an understatement. The batter was thin and soggy and the fish over cooked and dry. Oh the chips were not great either. We binned them and got a kebab from Romero (I don’t even like kebabs) I’m not sure what they do well because both the Chinese and the fish n chips were overpriced and terrible. Honestly a totally and complete rip-off

The only chippy in the world that only sells cod on a Wednesday and haddock for the rest of time. I'm not codding you but really?? The fish portions are so small I ordered two as its obvious they cut one portion into two tiny pieces to maximise profit, so you're basically paying 10 quid for a fish. Take a look at the pic .. exactly. So you're reading this and thinking, what about the chips?? Oh yea, hmm no .. they aren't good either, dry as sticks! I've kept them as they'll make good tinder for when I next light a fire!! What is it with whalley and rubbish takeaways..this one is a stayaway!!

After working about 10 hours at the local polling station in Whalley and losing the will to live, Martins dad brought in the most delicious chips.......these revived me and the rest of us for the remainder of our duration there.. which wasn't soo bad.... I have got to say 10/10 for my rating they were truly scrumptious!!

Excellent variety of food. We especially like the friendly service even though they can get really busy, they still have time to be polite. Love the online ordering service. And highly recommend the Singapore fried rice.

Great food, chose the Chinese options. All freshly cooked to order. Good portion sizes. Fair pricing too. Will certainly return there in the future when in the area in need of a takeaway.

Chips and Chinese in one takeaway. This solves a few issues. Doesn't take card but we're good enough to cook our food while we got cash. Delicious quick food.
