The Fox & Hounds in Richmondshire

Called at Fox on the way home from a drive out. Recall having a good pint a few years back, and there was an advert for Weds pie n a pint for 15 quid. Walked into a room full of friendly locals and bar staff. Got a cracking pint of blonde, and my wife had a pint of 45 lager. We ordered steak pie chips n mushy peas. The wife had chicken leek chips n mushy peas. Can't fault what we had. The steak was so tender, and the chips were good too, but gutted I didn't get the chicken leek as it was so tasty, and it came with a pot of cream sauce. 30 notes for a main and a pint is excellent value!

Proper home made food in a real local pub. Landlady is a delight.

Warm pub with an even warmer welcome. This traditional village pub is clean, warm and welcoming and is grounded in what it wants to be: a traditional pub serving good beer, great food and a offering a friendly welcoming atmosphere. You get the sense is it part of the village community. It makes such a difference when the landlady or mother of the landlord are so obviously enjoying their work. This enthusiasm comes across and makes the whole experience that much better. And it sets up a positive atmosphere right from entering the pub. There was a warming open fire when we arrived and even though we were in walking clothes with muddy-ish boots we were made welcome and could have sat anywhere in the pub, though we chose to sit at a bar table near the fire with a hard floor. My beer was very good it was just a pity there was not a dry cider option, either on draught or in a bottle, for my partner. But the drive to sweeter cider appears to be universal. The food was well presented and tasty with a good but appropriate portion size and substituting garden peas for mushy peas did not cause a hearth attack, which was an experience we have had in another local pub. We rarely eat chips so it was a treat to have "real" chips that had been fried to perfection along with the scampi. The only niggle was having to open a number of tomato ketchup sachets, though they were at least Heinz. I know the argument for and against, but I would rather have had a bottle! This is personal preference. We thought the food to be good value for money. The toilets were clean and well laid out, and there is a nice outside area for when the better weather arrives. While the entrance is tight there is a good sized carpark to the rear. The first time at this pub but it is on our list to visit again. Tip, if you want a walk before and after your visit. Park at Wensley Bridge and walk along the river path up into West Witton. The walk can be extended and made partially circular with a bit of map reading.

Welcoming cups of tea and coffee after 11 mile walk through the snow. Sorry we could not stay for great selection of keg and draught beers. Must go back to try the meals.

We stopped on the way through. What a lucky find. We've just had the best pub dinner in ages. A pie with gorgeous short crust pastry, freshly made, proper chips. Lamb cobbler with suet dumplings chips and veggies. All home cooked no microwave nonsense. They had several local ales on👍🍺The couple keeping the pub have only been there a couple of months and I wish them all the best..... Just gutted 130 is too far for it to be our local 😟

Under new management, and the difference already is fantastic. Very cosy pub, good price and great food. Service is also excellent. Can't rate the rooms, as not stayed there yet and not even sure if as yet they are taking in overnight stays. If you're in the area, drop in.

Great pub, provides value for money in a great environment opposite the terrifyingly expensive and definitely NOT value for money Wensleydale Heifer. Go here, not the Heifer. The Heifer charges stupid money for a shot glass of whisky which you can get a full bottle from Tesco's for the same price. The fox is lovely, reasonably priced and absolutely a better atmosphere.

i don’t usually write reviews but this beautiful, cosy little pub deserves every bit of credit. I believe it’s under new management (their first week!) when we visited for an evening meal and wow, we will definitely be returning. We ordered starters, mains and a dessert and we both said (if socially acceptable!) we would have genuinely licked the plates clean. The food was absolutely delicious, and very generous portion sizes. The steak pie was unreal! We were served by lovely members of staff who also stopped to have a chat with us which was also really, really nice. Thank you for making our short stay in the Yorkshire dales even better! Came away with my 7month old puppy for the weekend and found this absolutely amazing place. The landlords couldn’t have been more helpful, John and his partner were amazing hosts and so helpful. Locals lovely and made me feel so welcome. Amazing walks to go on. Bedroom was stunning, breakfast was lovely as was the evening meal and coeliacs fully catered for. We were staying in West Witton and ate in The Fox twice.The food and service were excellent. We had meat pie,steak,salmon and scampi all really tasty and we would certainly eat there again on our next visit.It is a true traditional Yorkshire pub,a locals drinkers pub.

Absolute cracking food & beer..!!

Went for an evening meal here and was rather disappointed, the salmon was overcooked and they had run out of broccoli, only spring onions as an alternative which i can't eat. I was pleased they at least had something gluten free on the desert menu buy sadly the topping was like sawdust and not pleasant. The pub itself was very friendly

This is a lovely pub in the Yorkshire dales. The bedroom was lovely bed comfortable and all clean. Food really nice and breakfast really hearty lots of it. We stayed bank holiday weekend august and it was the west witton festival which was great fun. We will definitely go back again at some point in the near future.

Lovely place to stay lovely couple that own it. Bedroom clean and comfortable lovely bathroom. Food was very nice. Breakfast was lovely. Just a lovely friendly locals sort of place it was extremely busy because it was witton festival weekend. But it added to the atmosphere and it was so much fun.

Good food and atmosphere, friendly staff, decent range on draught, pretty much exactly what you want from a country pub.

Excellent, friendly service. I had the salmon fillet (the sweet chilli and ginger sauce complimented it perfectly and was delicious!). My husband had a double bacon cheeseburger. He said it was the best he had eaten in a long time. We both had desserts which didn’t disappoint. Excellent food and very reasonably priced. Highly recommend!

Came for the first time on Friday night as we were staying in the village for the weekend. It was Pie Night and we should have booked as it was very popular however the friendly staff managed to get us in! Service was excellent, really nice attentive staff who were so friendly and welcoming. Food was excellent. Really good home cooked pies, and the best hand cut chips that were so golden and tasty! Really enjoyed so we have booked again for a second night for our group! Thank you!

We only popped in for a quick drink but found the pub friendly the quality of the drinks excellent, the food looked lovely & the interior welcoming.

Dropped in on the off chance to try to get some lunch. Although they were not serving food the Landlord very kindly offered to make me a roast beef sandwich, which was superb. And an excellent pint of Wensleydale Brewery Gamekeeper. A very nice pub with plenty of good ales. Massive thanks for the lunch.

Great stay at this lovely traditional pub! Didn’t eat here as at further up the road due to pre made plans but on our next stay we will eat here for sure ! Gorgeous Blue room we stayed in, lovely decorated throughout ans sparkling clean.Greta breakfast but I have to apologise as I should have just ordered bacon and egg not a full English ! I just couldn’t manage it and it was huge. Lovely tasting local produce I am sure. All the staff very friendly and professional .We had a lovely afternoon soaking up the sun in the rear beer garden and had great parking. Will bringing our dog next time

We booked here for one night because our first choice was not available, and we are very pleased we did! The room was excellent, well appointed, (needs a bin in room under tea facilities) very clean, and comfortable bed, plus a sofa to watch tv from. We viewed the dinner menu and thought it all sounded a bit “bought in and re-heated”. We were wrong - the food was excellent and freshly prepared; not just our meal but all the meals we saw. Best chips we’ve had. The steak pie had a top and bottom (so “proper” according to a well known tv chef). Staff were attentive and friendly. The place was heaving with satisfied customers, enjoying the food and hand pull beer.

Called in for refreshment whilst travelling from Darlington to Hawes. This is a ‘real’ Yorkshire pub, has real fire and has 6 local cask ales on handpump. Very friendly staff and nice atmosphere. The menu on the blackboard looked very enticing. I would definitely recommend a visit.

We wanted a place between Wensleydale creamery and forbidden corner. This place was a great find! Great atmosphere, very friendly and extremely comfortable accommodation. Highly recommend.

What a fantastic place to stay and have as a base to explore the Yorkshire Dales. John, Joanne, Victoria, Paul and all the staff were absolutely brilliant, and our break here was so comfortable. The room was superb and the meals were just lovely. Can't wait to get back and stay again and do some more exploring. The Fox is a really wonderful place.

Found this gem of a pub after a long wet walk up a big hill and couldn’t have had a warmer welcome. Greeted with a big smile, treats for the dog and lighting the fire in the snug for us to get dry and warm. Lovely atmosphere with fantastic staff. Only slight issue was limited menu with it being Easter Monday but will definitely be back to try the main menu, if the onion rings are anything to go by the main menu will be amazing!

After a long drive up a hill to a pub that was advertised on the main road, only to find it didn't open until 5pm(!), we were very pleased to see The Fox along the main road and we stopped for lunch. We were given a warm welcome by the landlord who later asked about our holiday and where we were from. There's a great choice of local ales and the food is varied and delicious. Dogs are also welcome in the cost garden and decking and inside too. Don't hesitate to call in!

We went for an early evening tea last Friday after work. There were quite a few people in the bar area and we received a warm welcome from all staff who gave our labrador dog a fuss and a few treats. We sat in the back room near the log burner. I had the butternut squash, spinach and blue cheese pie and my husband had the meat pie which we couldn't fault. Both were very tasty. I especially liked the pie as the blue cheese sauce wasn't overpowering and a little pot of extra was served on my plate if I wanted to add more into the pie. The pastry was delicious too. It was great to be in a pub with a lovely ambience. We will definately be back soon. Thank you

Nipped in for lunch on the way home and it was really nice. Open fire, good beer and the Tandoori Chicken burger I had was great.

We visited here after we had walked all day. Great for walkers, warm fire burning, staff were friendly and welcoming. Service was prompt our multiple drink orders. Facilities all very clean and modern. Much appreciated.

After reading all the good reviews about the food, we were extremely disappointed when we called in for lunch on Saturday 22nd October 2022 to be told that there was no food, with no explanation, after we had ordered and paid for our drinks. The advertising board on display outside also stated food was available. I realise that pubs are going through hard times, but advertising on the internet and on site should be up to date and truthful.

Just spent a week in West Witton and ate 4 times in this pub. The Sunday lunch is the best we’ve had in a pub. It included 6 types of veg. They made us and Oscar the dog very welcome. I’d certainly recommend it to everyone . We talked to a couple who were staying near Aysgarth and they’d been told to go to the Fox as it is the best in the area.

Stopped here from lunch while walking in the area. Made to feel very welcome. Excellent real ale and some lovely food. Highly recommended.

We just called in for a quick drink this afternoon and it was a pub, eatery full of character. Nice well kept ales and a loverly landlady.

John and Joanne are doing a great job, somehow retaining the character of Blackies at the same time as making the necessary renovations. Anyway, the beer and food are great, as is the warm welcome and cosy atmosphere. Looking forward to our next visit. Dog friendly too, not sure about cats!?

We have visited The Fox for Sunday lunch today. Everything from our initial phone call this morning was handled expertly! I rang at around 10am to enquire about availability and was advised that they could accommodate us at our preferred time. Both of us chose the beef and pork Sunday lunch, which was, without question, the best lunch we have had not only in Wensleydale, but probably ever. Generous home cooked portions, portions, piping hot and very tasty. The meat was very nice too. The service from all of the staff was excellent. I explained that one of our party was vegan, which often initiates panic or otherwise. Not here…..I was comprehensively told what they could provide, and what would have to be omitted, which was the first reassuring reason for choosing this pub. Often staff or owners aren’t sure of what is vegan and what is not. To find a pub as friendly as this, who know what they are doing, in the middle of Wensleydale was a revelation. Price wise, they are on a par with most other pubs in the area, but they are streets ahead of their competition in terms of giving the customer what they want, and making sure they plan to return. Well done to everyone involved, and make no mistake, we will be back. Probably next Sunday !!

Really fantastic pub. Our party of 6 had a great meal and some local real ale. The kitchen went out of their way to cater for a dairy free diet. Plenty of vegetarian options and everyone said they enjoyed it.

Lovely pub we found at the end of our walk from Asgarth falls to Castle Bolton. The staff were super friendly and went above and beyond to accommodate us at lunch time as we arrived just before food service finished. The food itself was delicious, great quality and a really good price as were the beers! The new owner was a really nice guy, really personable and really valued people's opinions. It was exactly what we needed after a good long walk and we can't rate highly enough.We will be back again! Thank you

Fox and hounds A very nice find, very good food very very good beer and a welcoming and friendly landlord and landlady. Very reasonable prices. If you like pies this is the place to go. Outside area is spacious and comfortable, dogs are welcome. Plenty of parking. You won’t be disappointed

The guys were playing Quoits out the back. The staff were local and friendly and the food a good pub standard menue. Lot to be learned from village life. I enjoyed our visit and will return.

Excellent local village pub! We've called in here several times while staying in the area. Great lunch spot after hiking Pen Hill or for evening pints and a burger. Ample space in the beer garden or a smaller covered area for outside dining.

Enjoyed a very tasty Christmas lunch today! Many thanks to Nola, Blackie and their team! Our Sunday lunches are a great treat and something we have still been able to look forward to in lockdown!

I'm usually quite territorial for my home local, situated in the south west, on am island that time forgot. Then I got posted here and it's like a home away from home. The food is good, the ale plentiful and the landlords/locals welcome you like a long lost relative.Good points: Open Fire, tasty grub, feels like home.Bad points: No free Friday's for one of their newest fans......... Okay, I can't think of any right now, but I could always do an update if it comes to me. That's a good sign right?Bottom line: Even if you're passing through, give this pub a visit. You can always judge a good pub by its locals. These guys will even do take aways when we're struck with another lock down.
