The Fox and Hounds in Mid Suffolk

Just turned up hoping to find a table for two for Sunday lunch. Very helpful in finding a table and we enjoyed a fabulous Sunday roast and dessert. Excellent home cooked roast beef, roast potatoes, seasonal veg and Yorkshire pudding followed by home made treacle sponge with lashings of custard. Where can you go these days and get a home cooked Sunday roast for £12. Friendly, helpful service and excellent food and drink. Well done Fox and Hounds!

Good food, good atmosphere, quality food and plenty of it, decent village pub and restaurant, close to railway station

6 of us came last Saturday for lunch. We normally go out in Bury St Edmunds, but we have been so disappointed with food and service recently, we thought we'd travel out further to see if there is hope elsewhere. We were not disappointed! Chilli & Nachos went down well on our table, I was able to swap my rice on my curry for chips & the steak was tender. For desserts, the portion of profiteroles was huge, and as for the ice cream, 2 scoops was plenty and very tasty. The menu online is also supplemented by a large specials board. BTW - the service was great too, thank you. We will certainly go back next time we are in the area.

We popped in her on the way to Market Western, when the original pub we aimed for turned out to be fully booked. Whoops. So glad it was though, as this was a stoke of good luck. We were struggling as we have a couple of dogs with us, with one being a rather large greyhound. This pub had plenty of space and we're happy to host us all. The staff were very friendly and the food was amazing. So much so, we came back a second time for lunch.

The excellent ales here have always been a draw, but the food less-so. Our welcome was excellent, with friendly and attentive staff, but the (somewhat-battered) menus + a specials board offered a basic selection. The actual food was disappointing, with quantity replacing quality - a huge portion of chips doesn't make up for bland food. Our vege 'not-chicken' burger had no flavour at all, and with no dressing (ie in a dry bun) was uninspiring, even with a pile of shredded lettuce. Our prawn salad was similar, with an ample portion of prawns and a giant portion of lettuce, but not much else. Overall this venue offers basic pub-grub at modest prices, but the lack of imagination in the kitchen lets it down...

Visited again fourof us for lunch very good choice in menu and on blackboard. Linda and Jack were very helpful. Food and drinks were excellent.large portions,so unable to order dessert,due to being full. Good choice for my wife who is a vegetarian. Well worth a visit.

As a group we regularly visit the Fox and Hounds. On a Saturday night it was great to see the pub so busy and we didn’t expect to be able to eat. The manager was fantastic. She went above and beyond in order to fit us in which we really appreciated and despite being very busy you could see her priority was to make sure all customers were happy and taken care of. The food was just what we were looking for and the portion sizes were beyond generous! I cannot fault the atmosphere, the drink selection and the service. What a friendly and inviting pub to have in the village.

New to the area we visited the pub for lunch and we were not disappointed, we were welcomed by the manager, she made our children feel comfortable with the new surroundings which made all the difference to our stay, a good variety of food to choose from and the portion sizes were beyond belief for the price, great value for money. we felt valued as customers and never forgotten about. we will definitely be making this a more regular place to visit for great service and quality food.

V busy pub, waiting and bar staff friendly. Food is standard pub grub. We settled at only a main each as our issue, just as our food had arrived, was the wine we received (no wine list available), and the way we were dealt with by the manager when we tried to address!! Sadly due to increase in prices there is no sight of a wine list (explained later by the manager), however, our waitress kindly wrote down what there was to offer and we settled on a Malbec. Overall choices were a white, Malbec, Merlot, Tempranillo. The wine delivered to our table was already open and no attention was drawn to the fact that this was a blend of 2 types of wine (Merlot & Malbec) and not the Malbec we had requested, with the bar lady putting the bottle down and saying she would leave us to pour before walking away, My friend started to pour me a small glass when it was noticed it had Merlot in it and as I don't fair well with Merlot I would not drink it. We called the waitress over to address (some of the others in our party had been prepared to give the blend a go, so poured a small glass each but the wine was not to their taste), she in turn called over the original bar lady (she said that this was the only Malbec they had, only it wasn't a Malbec!), who then had to call the manager. The manager said she had looked at the piece of paper with the wines written on it, however, did not offer to bring it back to the table, and explained the cost rise of wine and lack of wine list currently. I suggested that I would prefer to see a wine list and have the price increase advised to me, so that way we know exactly what we are ordering, The lack of compromise was immediately evident and when my friend pointed out that the wine was already open when it was brought to the table, which meant we were expected to accept and drink it, the manager said the wine would be on the bill and walked away! End of discussion. Not good customer service as the wine could potentially have been used for sale as wine by the glass behind the bar and a compromise reached. General consensus being that we would not return under current management. Very sad as after Bernie and his team left, the new owner appeared to provide the same level of service.

Not bad, but I probably wouldn't go again. The menus were a bit tatty and not very clean, which put me off a bit. My soup was OK though - but I think almost every pub could cook soup. Still it was a appreciated, as we were hungry.

Four of us visited today for lunch,excellent food and drinks,good choice for vegetarians. All meals and drinks at a decent price. Lidia who served us was full of knowledge and very helpful. Well worth a visit.

We have lived in the Stowmarket area for nearly 5 yrs and have been meaning to visit for some time. Would often see the pub from the train as Thurston Station nearby. We've been missing out. Firstly, what lovely pub with lots of character and lots of nice beers to try, as well as Gins and nice choice of coffee's. Secondly the food is amazing, and brilliant value. Proper pub food and fantastic quality. We had a homemade burger and a double battered chicken breast burger, which we both agreed was the best we'd had in a long time. All the food coming out looked lovely. Staff were very friendly, and we will definitely be going again. Quality, friendly and great value. Highly recommended!!

Warm friendly atmosphere, friendly and attentive staff with good value and excellent quality food. Portions are generous, to say the least, promptly served and piping hot. Delicious traditional desserts with a personal touch. Altogether a place to revisit as we have done on many occasions.

I went to the pub with a group of my friends after 10 minutes we got told if one of us (who didn’t have a drink) then all of us have to leave. I didn’t see anywhere where it’s says that

On a long journey we picked this pub, based on reviews, for lunch and a break from travelling. We weren’t disappointed, in fact we were overwhelmed by just how perfect it is. We were greeted without delay and offered a range of places to sit. The young staff were very professional and their attention was timely. The menu was extensive and I went for the rump steak as a main and whitebait as a starter. The portions of both are very large, I’ve never seen so much whitebait on one plate. Everything was cooked to perfection, including my steak which was bay far the best I had in my week away. I believe this was supplied by a local butcher. There was a good variety of real ales available, but I could only sample a half as I was driving. The pub is spotlessly clean throughout, the restroom exceptionally so. I cannot fault our experience in any way, and I highly recommend this pub. I’m looking forward to the next time we are passing through.

Ordered 2 Fish & Chip meals and a Ham, Egg and Chip meal, very filling and good quality food, staff were very efficient and attentive

Called in here for a meal as we were viewing property to buy in the area. The food was hot and well cooked. The staff were very pleasant.

Had meals on two occasions over the weekend. As usual, the food was excellent, staff friendly and virus regulations implemented, which provides reassurance. The fillet and sirloin meals were particularly good. Highly recommended.

Had a really nice meal here this week. The steak was cooked exactly as ordered (medium rare) and was the best I’d had for a while. The Oakham Green Dragon (tasty IPA) was great. One of the few pubs around Bury St Edmunds with an ever changing selection of interesting guest real ales. The Goose Island is also a good fallback resident :)With the friendly staff this pub is heart of the village. All the above, plus a lot of attention paid to COVID safety measures makes this one of the few go to places for us this summer.

Popped in today for my first drink after lockdown. The pub has great safety measures in place. The pub served its usual brilliant ales. Will be returning for one of the fab curry nights.

My wife had eaten here with a "ladies who lunch" group and had raved about it so brought me here en route to Bury. Large portions of well cooked and well presented pub favourites with one or two slightly off the beaten track items such as my choice which was the well flavoured lamb and mint suet pudding. We will return but probably after Bury as walking round the market after this feast was a decided effort!

Had lunch here today, having not been here for a long time. It is still a great pub. The food was delicious, tasty, well cooked and HUGE portions. Quick bit of advice, share a starter, and maybe a desserts lol

We booked for Lunch with our son & grandson,we were met with a good welcome.Ordered drinks at bar,then directed to our table with menus +specials e.t.c. The food was plentiful/hot and delicious. The real ale was excellent.

Lovely family run pub. I noticed it had awards too. Lucy & Andy are amazing hosts, worth a visit for food or the sports bar, hard to find a traditional pub which still has darts, pool table, fruit machines etc.

I've never been to Thurston before, we only went there to use the station to get to Bury St Edmunds Christmas Market.We realised that all the restaurants in Bury wood be packed so we though .. let go and have a meal and a beer at that nice looking pub down the road and catch the next train.What a great decision! Great choice of beer, we actually stopped for two hours. We had a great afternoon. Friendly people in a pub which seems to be the centre of the village.I went for the T-Bone steak ... ridiculously large, but who cares?See you next year!

Based on the excellent reviews, we visited here for lunch today and the reviews don't lie! A friendly welcome, our reserved table was ready early and we relaxed while we enjoyed our pre-meal drinks and looked at the menu. We were spoilt for choice as there were so many delicious sounding dishes on offer. I started with a Feta and Tomato Salad and my husband chose the Red Pepper soup of the day. We followed with Gammon Steak and Fish and Chips and while the portions were more than generous, we enjoyed the food very much. The service was good, the dishes attractively presented and the atmosphere was warm and comfortable. We had no room for pudding but enjoyed after lunch coffee in the adjoining bar. The Fox and Hounds certainly lived up to expectations and is now on our "must return" restaurant list!

Just got home and I felt so compelled to do this review - We have had one of the best meals and service I have had for a long time. The chef really knows their stuff - incredible tasting meal on every course - great atmosphere - great service..

We were fortunate enough to spend 2 months over the summer at the annex attached to The Fox and Hounds. The Old Stables are a very comfortable self-cater unit. The overall size of the unit is very spacious and well presented. Initially I was worried that the pub noise might be intrusive, but I am very pleased to say that it was not an issue at all.

Often call if in the area. A very good selection of cask ales, always well kept.Extensive food menu and what I have eaten there over the past has always been of the highest quality and good value as well. Very pleasant and helpful staff. A must call if you are in the area

The outside is a bit run down , garden not so good and needs some work. Inside okay no issue so6/10.

Had a nice meal here, plenty of choice and well staffed. It does get very busy so get in early or book a table. Nice to be in a pub that really is a hub of the village

Twice been here to have a meal and both times was told the kitchen was closed. Once because we wer two minutes late and the second time because a "big" party was due to arrive, they did, NINE people. WOW huge. They have now missed out on 5 meals and how many in the future?

Met a friend off train. Bar area busy but got a table for dinner no problem. Waiting staff all very pleasant. Lovely atmosphere and food was fantastic. Will definitely recommend to others and will return soon.

We were on the way home from latitude festival and spotted this place. Very glad we popped in for lunch. Lovely fresh food and friendly staff. If we are over this way in future we will be sure to call here again.

My wife and I were on a bike ride through Suffolk County and were thirsty and figured there would be a pub nearby. We found this one, and spent the next 4 hours having a great time w Andy, the owner, his staff, and several of the many local patrons and regulars. The spirits and food were amazing, and the atmosphere and service perfect. We wouldn’t change a thing. They have award winning grub, a dart board, great facilities, and is centrally located. We really got a great cross section of British thoughts and life and even some local knowledge about the airbases nearby, where my wife’s uncle was stationed in WW II. We hated to leave but had to get back to our hotel in Bury. There are so many friendly people... Don’t miss a stop here!

Been here several times under old management, Came in with friends and stayed for a bite to eat , pub grub it maybe but much better than the like of hungry horse etc and won’t break the bank

This local pub is an example of how the job should be done, simple food cooked well with good sized portions, very good wine served by the glass, staff friendly, cheery and efficient, A busy local pub especially as we visited on the night of the champions league final but still had time for the tourist trade. The Grange Hotel up the road should go and see how it should done.

It was a last minute decision to come here (we almost went to Hungry Horse, and so glad we didnt).

Stopped for a lunch time meal as it was billed as Suffolk pub of the year. Good choice as we had a very well cooked and well presented meal with very generous portions. The steak and ale pie is probably the best I have tasted. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

This pub is a reasonable option for a plateful of good plain food, though nothing we ate was anything special. There is a good selection of ales and the pub has a good atmosphere.

This place is doing something right as the car park was full to bursting and inside it was impossible to move when we arrived at 6.30pm on a Friday evening . Thankfully we'd reserved a table .

We very regularly eat here and love the classic feel and pub grub! Always busy and friendly atmosphere! Very big portions so only go for food if you are looking for a great and filling meal. Otherwise a fab stop for just a drink too!

Only the second visit for a meal. Place was packed. Great atmosphere, friendly staff. Had the Christmas menu. Was very nice, plenty of choice for all tastes. Considering we were a large party of about 30 people we were all served quite quick. Good home cooked food. Was value for money and well presented.

It was our first time to the pub, staff are very friendly and very helpful. The food is wonderful, but be warned large portions, price are very reasonable, we would certainly go back again.

Popped in for first time, hadn't booked, place was very full but they soon found us space at a table in the bar. Sunday roast was "like home made" or as my partner said, "actually better than home made".

Always good food but be warned large portions We go back again and again . Popular so book in advance if you want to eat.

Visiting some friends for the weekend, popped in for a drink. Selection of ales was brilliant and all of the ones I tried were delicious. My friend would of liked a nicer selection of wines though.

We went as a large group (4 adults, 4 children). The staff were helpful and friendly, drinks were served promptly, and the food was all very tasty. Everyone enjoyed their meals, and the staff accommodated the children well, making sure their food came out first.

Last minute stop after finishing work, had to wait a lil while to order food, young waitress was serving and taking orders on her own, however food was delicious and such big portions, we both ordered chilli, with crusty bread and a side order of cheesy chips, would definitely return lovely pub thank you.

Husband and I on a rare night out chose to eat here. We should have walked out when we spotted the plague of flies on the ceiling. I ordered salmon with a parsley sauce and vegetables....the salmon was so dry with no sauce in site, just a sprinkle of parsley and the vegetables were broccoli, cauliflower and a mound of carrots (Sunday lunch veg). My husband had a cheese and bacon burger with chips. He said the burger was tasteless and greasy and the chips tasted frozen. Even though I told the waitress when she took the plates and the lady when I paid, nothing was said or done to rectify our poor experience. We won't eat here again!

Popped in for a bite to eat with my daughter, ordered a sausage and bacon baguette. Bloody lovely, proper bacon and decent sausages. A pleasant surprise. Thank you. Will be back.

We were so pleased they served food on a Monday lunchtime. Very cheerful friendly staff and good service. We had prawn salad and ham salad all delicious. Easy parking and good value

Friendly welcome great ale and the food is good not great but a 3 course meal and a pint £14.45 great value.

We popped in for a drink and dinner mid week to celebrate my birthday.

Arrived with warm welcome but left after 45 minutes without even being asked for our food order. We arrived at 6.45pm and apart from two others eating and a table of four set up for an evening of card gambling we were the only people eating inside... at 7.00pm a table started filling up with what turned out eventually to be eight ladies on a pre booked birthday evening meal after twenty more minutes they ordered ... then, although set up with green felt and cards/chips the four card sharps were asked for their order... we were told it would be another twenty minutes before we would be able to even order (8.00pm!)... we paid for our unfinished drinks and left for food elsewhere as our grandchildren are 9 and 11 years old...

Mountains of tasty food served by friendly staff. We didn't book but were told it is a very busy pub and it is advisable.

Went for Sunday lunch, and wow what a good meal. Four of us all tried something different, absolutely no complaints from anyone.. Very tasty food and extremely generous portions. Staff were very good and very friendly too which is always nice.

Can't praise this pub enough. It gets everything just right, every time. Food is really good quality pub food and the staff are friendly and efficient. I've been several times and never been disappointed but booking for food is recommended.

We were spending a few days in Thurston and The Fox and Hounds was recommended to us.

Called them three separate days trying to get a reservation finally got through and told no availability. So we were told to try to get a table in the pub.

Popped in with my girlfriend on the way through. (We Booked). Although we were early for the meal we were met with a warm welcome and great atmosphere.

What a lovely lunch, our food was served hot and reasonably quickly. It was all very tasty and loads of it. Would defiantly recommend it and would return.

A warm welcome and nice atmosphere. Smallish and comfortable. Longish time in food coming but that’s because everything is cooked individualy. Reasonably priced for ample portions.

This was my 2nd lunch here and, just as the first time, it was very busy. All tables in the restaurant were reserved, and those in the rest of the pub quickly filled up. It’s easy to see why the Fox and Hounds is so popular. The food is excellent and there is so much of it. I had steak and ale pie which was delicious, followed by a huge portion of chocolate fudge cake and ice cream. I have a pretty good appetite but found only will power and a love of good food enabled me to finish. My colleague had vast piece of cod with chips and did his best but still sent roughly a third of it back as he was so full. It is such a shame to see good food wasted and I wonder if portions could be a little smaller with less waste and more profit.

Everything was spot on: polite/happy/friendly staff, good selection of gin to choose from and our meals were superb. We both had a 10oz rump steak with garlic butter (£12.95) and all the trimmings. The steak was cooked beautifully and tasted great. Plenty of chips and onion rings (not the cheapy onion rings but good ones!). All in all a great meal, can't wait to return. Thank you!

We went on the back of one previous visit to the Monday night special. We were abit unsure of recommending here, but we were all throughly impressed. We were there early-ish on a Saturday night and it was very busy. I think it might be better to book.

We have just returned from the fox and hounds after celebrating my husbands birthday.. not only was the food amazing, the portion sizes were very generous and the value was exceptional, the staff were very friendly and helpful... looking forward to returning to this little gem!

We received a warm welcome from Elliott and his team who very efficiently served all my group with drinks from a very well stocked bar with a wide choice of well kept beers.

As we were visiting for the first time in many years, it was lovely to go to such a welcoming pub. The food was delicious I recommend the chilli! It was definitely good value for money. The staff were very welcoming and attentive. We would definitely visit again!

Great pub, wish it had more seating as such a popular place to get into!! Homemade food that will always fill you up and won’t disappoint! Must book in advance! Highly recommend
