Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Cooking your own Sunday lunch must now surely have become a thing of the past. It cannot surely be possible to cook a more perfect lunch than this! (Ok - the roast potatoes could have been crispier, but thankfully resisted the temptation to race outside and smash my car up). For tiresome technical reasons, my appetite has been bouncing along the bottom of the pond recently. So it was with thrilling excitement that I had three courses at the Fountain - all sublime, for the first time in my life! Keep it up Fern; you’re simply the best! Add in a beautiful venue, a delightfully friendly clientele and some extremely well behaved dogs, you’ll hopefully get the picture. Oh, almost forgot: also add in the excellent, fun and relaxed front-of-house shenanigans provided by the imperious Nigel and Artemis (I didn’t believe it either!) and you’ll find yourselves in awe!! Brilliant.

This is a lovely pub, quaint and secluded location. However the limited selection of drinks and poor quality of food let's it down. The bar staff are friendly and the interior and garden is above average for a pub of this location.

This pub serves traditional pub food and for those that want something a little bit more special their blackboard specials will offer you some Thai favourites and a good selection of fish and meat dishes. All tried and tested favourites so why do I always go for the pie of the day? Probably because it’s always delicious and packed with flavour! Well done and thank you for looking after us both on our recent visit.

Always used to be a great pub, until the "old" landlady left a few years ago. Has struggled to find its old form since, until that is, the new owner stepped in. The old chef (sorry I cannot remember your name!) has returned and with that the food is now better than any other pub within 20 mins of Cowden. Outstanding food. Light years ahead of other, lovely but over-priced, local pubs. The new owner himself is similarly excellent. Charming, engaging and helpful. Service is perhaps a fraction slow, but we were in no hurry so it was fine. I expect they will find their feet on that front soon enough! Lovely pub. Will return. Often!

Strictly locals only pub Located in a tiny Kent village of Cowden . It's quaint spot could 1st off have better parking. Recently re-,opened for food after being closed for a minor refurbish. This place is a haven for the super wealthy locals of Cowden. I found one of the owners Fern, very nice and friendly, but the other one Nigel, has a selective kindness policy. Friends have had dinner there and said it was not bad. If you are not a local , there, you may get a bit of a rude cold attitude I'll pass

We went to The Fountain for a family Sunday lunch and received a friendly welcome. We were seated at a spacious table with ample space for seven (and a dog) in the older part of the pub near the stove. My wife declared that the roast beef with all the trimmings and fresh vegetables was the best roast lunch she'd had for ages (and she's had a lot!). My son and I had the Barnsley Chop off the specials menu and they were large, pink and tender and served with a tasty sauce, perfect dauphinoise potatoes and fresh vegetables. We all had puddings, all of which were generous portions; mine was a superb fresh plum crumble with custard. The quality of the food and standard of cooking was higher than the usual pub lunch, more like a good restaurant, and excellent value for money. We took our time and were not rushed and I'm sure we'll return soon.

This is a real gem of a pub restaurant. We visited on a Saturday evening with friends. We all had an absolutely delicious meal and sat in a very cosy part of the pub near the log burning stove. The Landlord was very friendly and made us feel at ease as soon as we arrived. The other staff were very friendly and helpful and talked us through the menu and the specials board. The food we ate (all from the Specials Board) was delicious and we found it difficult to choose because they all sounded so good. The quality of the food and the choices were exceptional and all made on the premises. My husband said the Chicken, Leek and Ham pie was one of the best pies he had ever eaten. We met the Chef after our meal and complimented her on the excellent food (evidenced by all of our clean plates!) and said we would definitely be back again soon.

Oh my days! 3 of us went to the Fountain last night for dinner and it was absolutely amazing. The pub has recently changed hands and there is a new Chef and boy, can she cook! I had the Risotto followed by the best cheesecake I have ever had. The Risotto was so tasty and perfectly cooked and I can’t wait to sample it again. My friends had the Chicken - which was beautifully cooked and presented and Grilled Skate - which they declared delicious. They both had the Sticky Toffee pudding - which I tasted and it was as light as a feather. We were warmly welcomed by the Landlord and had a fantastic evening - plenty of fruit gins on offer and really good wines. Can’t recommend the Fountain highly enough.

Being a new resident in the area we were excited to try the local pub. Especially after hearing the great things about it. We put it off for a month or 2 before I finally convinced myself to talk a little dog walk and stop to have lunch their with a friend. It was perfect. In every sense of the word. Not only we’re they warm and welcoming but seemed genuinely happy to welcome new faces (and fluffy ones too!) I had fish and chips which was very lovely and the chips were 10/10. After such an amazing experience, I went back and told my new fiancé who was very jealous I tried it without him. Fas forward a couple of weeks, we took a group of friends for a lovely walk around the fields, popping into the pub on our way round. We got there about 3pm and had a lovely round of drinks with our son who was very happy with the crisp selection! Not long after warming up from outside, along came a sharing bowl of left over roasties from their Sunday Roast Service which had just ended. WOW. I’ve never in my whole 25 years of living ever tasted a better roast potato that could rival my own recipe. The thyme…the garlic…the crunch. I’ve been dreaming about them ever since. If you’re looking for a brilliant place to have dinner in a real country pub, there’s no place I’d recommend more.

So refreshing to have a new team in there bringing a special place back to life. The roasts were excellent - best roast I'e had in a pub in a long time actually (I had beef, husband had chicken). Kids meals were a breakaway from the usual: still had chips but proper chips, not just frozen fries and some kind of nasty looking/tasting protein option. Proper battered fish for my daughter and proper burger for my son - but both in small size and not over-facing. Really good. Couldn't be happier that this pub seems to be finding it's feet again after a c.3 year gap.

This pub is our local pub - it has been a big part of our lives for many years, even when we did not live in the immediate area as we have done for the past 3 years. Our recent experience with the management has completely soured all others preceding it. I attempted to book out the pub for a Saturday to celebrate my wife's 40th birthday. It was exclusive hire for approximately 40 people with the kitchen providing food as and when anyone would want to order through out the day ( like a pub normally functions ) We were quoted a fee of £3500 (!!) that would cover hire and food without any alcohol included, as well as a deposit of £1700, £1000 of which would be non-refundable. This seemed absurd considering we have been in the pub regularly on Saturdays and there has never been more than 15 people and have previously booked out very busy pubs in London and Brighton for free - we were almost insulted by the quote. I declined and resorted to cutting numbers down to only family and requested a large lunch booking for 20. The pub agreed to the booking with a non-refundable deposit of £250 and requested we pre-booked food from a limited menu to make it easier on the kitchen. This was agreeable and the deposit was paid on the evening of the 28th of July - shortly after multiple guests had to drop out of the meal for various reasons. We decided it would be best to cancel the pub and host at our home as people could come and go more easily throughout the day. The next morning, less than 24 hours later and more than a week before the booking, my wife called the pub to cancel and have a discussion about the possibility of refunding at least some of the deposit or some other arrangement as we felt the cancelation would have no affect on the pubs normal headcount and £250 is no small amount of money to just give away. She was told she would be called back that evening by the landlord to discuss, but that the booking remained in place. The return call never came and the following day my wife's elderly aunty, unaware of the intended changes of plan, called the pub to put in her food order and was told she could not as the booking was cancelled. This she proceeded to tell other members of our family who were coming. This was obviously news to us based on the discussion had over the phone, so we reassured everyone the booking was considered still on though we might change plans. My wife called the pub again to discuss and received the same response: the booking was still on and that the landlord will call later that evening. Again, the return call never came... We proceeded with plan that the pub was cancelled, the outstanding issue would be about the deposit and made plans to host at home. A few days later my wife emailed to lay out our frustrations with how this process had been handled and again request some sort of discussion about the deposit, especially considering they had not returned calls as promised and had told my wife's aunty it had been cancelled whilst telling us it had not. The response was astounding: Apologies that we had been told we would be receive a call back from the landlord, that was never going to be the case. Apologies your aunty was told it was cancelled, but the booking was still on and they had supposedly ordered in food for us ( we had not provided our food pre-order yet so not sure how this could be anything other than untrue ) and it was far too late to be able to issue a refund of any sort. The issue is not even that we did not get our deposit, we understand it was non-refundable and that there was unfortunate timing with guests cancelling so shortly after paying it. It is that they messed us and our family about to the point of being rude and causing undue stress. We only wanted a straightforward discussion and would have been happy with the outcome of no refund as long as we had been able to talk to the landlord as promised on the two occasions. There was no reason to behave as they have. We really hope the £250 is worth losing long term customers...

The new owners are still finding their feet and struggling a bit. They have done a good job with the decor, but the dining room which they inherited, is soulless and does not have the feel of a country pub. It needs some pictures on the wall and perhaps some hops or something similar to soften the feel. The menu has been reduced in size and whilst the basic pub grub is well cooked, given the atmosphere of the pub, the food is a little expensive. The Fish portion is also much smaller. The menu would not entice me to eat again in the pub at the weekend, and the benchmark for the area is The Henry in Hever and Greyhound in Charcott. The new landlords have raised the beer prices, above those that are charged by local, rival pubs. The Rock, Queens Arms and Kentish. This has not gone down well with the locals, many who are now drinking at one of the fore mentioned Hostelries. The new owners need to drop their prices and make sure there is a full selection of Beers, and go on a charm offensive to entice the locals back. A cheery welcome, knowing the locals names and in Winter a warm fire are essentials in a Village Pub, without these people will choose to go elsewhere.

In these strange times it is nice to see the local Inn has diversified and offers a take away service, We moved to Cowden recently, unfortunately after Pubs and restaurants were forced to close so have not experienced Fountain Inn itself but the takeaway food was excellent and we will now continue to be a customer and we are now looking forward to it reopening so we can sample the food in the correct surroundings! Thank You.

Only a take away due to the Covid 19 shutdown, but phoned order in and picked up without any issue at all, seems very friendly & well organised, I had fish & chips she had sausage (2) & chips, the chips were very good light and fluffy just how they should be, fish batter was again very light and crispy, sausages were good quality, all in all very enjoyable and all for £16 whats not to like, will certainly be ordering again

A cosy pub in a delivery delightful village. It has the 3 key elements of a good pub- cosy atmosphere, freshly cooked home food and friendly and efficient staff. The dishes are always reliable with imaginative daily specials featuring meat and vegetarian dishes. A favourite starter is the crispy halloumi served on a bed of interesting salads with a generous sprinkling of whole roasted nuts! If you let them know in advance Sarah and Steve, the friendly owners, will make every effort to accommodate any special requests or diet. Sarah and her chef create between them anything from authentic spicy curries, to tagines, biryanis and a delicious creamy mushroom stroganoff, to name but a few. We have never been disappointed, and having only taken over last year from the previous long established owners, they and their staff are always eager to please. Its guaranteed to always be worth a visit. We try and make an effort to go often. Come along and support this dedicated and creative team!

After enjoying a pleasant evening with friends in a comfortable location, the evening was abruptly ended by the presence of the landlady. At 11:05pm on a Wednesday night, the landlady appeared behind the bar to remind the staff that closing time is at 11:00pm. The issue lies in her manner of conveying this message; instigated by shouting the staff member's name, followed by a blunt "11 o'clock. We close at 11 o'clock.". She spoke to a friend of mine, a frequent and loyal patron, as if he was intruding. He has since voiced that he was made to feel bad solely for being present. It's safe to say that the only reason I will be returning is to spend time with the people that make this place enjoyable, and while I respect the new owners for attempting to constantly improve their residence, I find this discourteous manner to be a real let down. I hope they have the decency to display some decorum the next time they wish to evict their loyal customers. This follows a poor display on another occasion, late last year, which I chose not to review as the owners were still new to the pub, and I didn't want to tar their reputation so early. I feel it pertinent to add now, however, that after booking a table for 6 people, we arrived to be told that our table had been given to another party, and we were to 'make a table' by pulling two together. There wasn't enough space to do this, and we ended up sitting around one side of a long table that we pulled together, leaving a walkway for access to the gent's - even so, one member of our party had to reposition his chair every time somebody wanted to pass. This was followed by shop-bought pies served over-cooked, and sub-par food for prices that didn't quite match. I hope the management can take these words on board, and see that there are perhaps some serious improvements to be made with their customer interactions.

Wow! This place is sinking!!! What a shame, used to be a lovely place for people near and far to meet, drink and eat. I have to say honestly since the last owners left this place has failed to come up to scratch on every level, I really hope the brewery recognise the loss in revenue and act on it. Nothing personal to the publican and her husband as they seem nice people, just no idea how to run a pub and look after punters!

Visited last week, the pub was very welcoming and decorated for Christmas nicely. The food is not as good as it has been in the past only vegetable offered is peas, the main menu needs work for sure to provide better choice. It is the owners choice if children are allowed in the pub and to what time, advice would be if you are allowing children in your pub you have a duty of care to make sure that the parents are doing the right thing and ensuring their children are with THEM and not wandering around. Feedback was given and I feel the owners are really trying to improve.

I stumbled across the fountain when visiting a friend who lives locally. i'd got lost in the village and poopedin to have a drink and ask for directions.Whilst I did not eat - the food looked wonderful and the restaurant had a loverly atmosphere. Toilets are spotless and the bar area is a lovely place to seat. The owner went beyond the call of duty to give me a lift to the house I was visiting, It's well worth a visit for a weekend lunch and a walk around the beautiful village - I will definitely be back

We ate here last night and contrary to the previous review we had an excellent meal. Our party of 9 enjoyed choices from the Christmas menu. We all agreed our food was superb!! The Christmas pudding supplied by Harvey's Brewery was to die for! Plus we were looked after so well it was a real treat. Most definitely not boil in the bag Aldi type food!!! But traditional home cooked delights!Yes, it is a country pub with traditional authentic charm. If it is fine dining in a trendy pub, this is not for you. But thank goodness there are still some country pubs around that stick to tradition!

Sadly things have taken a turn for the worst. The food is Aldi quality boil in the bag type rubbish. Maybe chancers trying to run a country pub .The only people who could write a good review are family or paid friends. It really is bad . Changes have been made that have not been popular and their attitude is hard luck get used to it . There is nothing professional here .

Generally have good food here although their special monkfish and saffron risotto was more like a paella, other specials are always welcome to top up the standard menu.

Visited The Fountain Inn several times in the last few weeks and have left very satisfied every single time. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the food is fantastic. Plenty of variety (inc. veggie and vegan options). Would recommend this pub to anyone!

We had visited this pub before, but not for a while. A whole new menu, and plenty of vegan choices. I chose the Vegetable Tagine, served with rice and tortilla chips, which was so delicious and hearty on a chilly night.

The Fountain has been one of my favourite pubs for 25 years. It has a tremendous reputation for friendly staff, quality food at sensible prices and good beer. All in all, a winning formula. I wish the new owners well.
