The Flintlock Inn in East Devon

Flintlock Inn made my Christmas feast a memorable affair. Starting with the refreshing Haloumi Salad, the festive vibes were set just right. The succulent Roast Leg of Lamb showcased the comforting allure of holiday traditions. Flintlock Inn, a cherished spot in Devon, proved to be more than just a dining experience; it was a celebration of local culinary delights. The Orange Chocolate Cheesecake added a sweet conclusion, leaving me appreciating the festive ambiance and the warmth of a local gem. Flintlock Inn, undoubtedly captures the essence of a delightful Christmas feast.

News years eve 2023. Just had the most fabulous meal, steak best we've had for a long time. We don't eat out much but this will always be the place we choose.

Brilliant Sunday lunch! Superb food and great service, lovely pub...highly recommend.

Great grub. Out of the way spot but worth it were you planning a journey West and needed a pitstop somewhere. Beats service station "dining" for about same price

Wonderful place, attended for a private wedding. Mixing classy and homely, with a beautiful beer garden and outdoor space to dance the night away, we had a magical evening. Thanks very much The Flintlock Inn!

Arrived dead on 12 which is the stated opening time. Place was closed, waited 15 mins and still no sign of life. Called and no answer with a very unprofessional answer machine message!

The best kept secret in The Blackdown Hills. Food is outstanding, pricing is spot on, great value. A real country winner.

Delicious meal - I had the slow cooked lamb and lemon posset. Quite quiet even though it was Friday evening but the service was excellent.

Says online it's open Tues night between 6 and 8.its not as just drove here!!

Friendly service. Packed restaurant so you need to book. Good value tasty food.

First visit - first-class food!

We have just had lunch here, our first visit and the food was excellent. We couldn't fault it and the staff were very friendly.

We popped by on our way west. It was lovely and welcoming. Food was good pub food and we had a really nice stop off. Also welcomed our well behaved retrievers. Thank you

The food is wonderful, beautifully cooked and loads of extra vegetables. We’ve been going every year for years and will continue to meet family and friends there.

Had lovely meal, service great but it was so cold where we were seated. Two members of our party put their coats on, fire was allowed to die out.

Good food, beers and atmosphere

Had a great Sunday lunch here today, the food was served hot and stayed hot thanks to warmed plates which made all the difference. Such good value for money too.

Located just off 303. staff welcoming and helpful service good food excellent my wife had steak and kidney pie large chunks of meat very tasty. I had muscles again excellent. Prices medium. All in all well worth visiting we will definitely be returning

First time we've been here and it lived up to its good reputation even though we think it's changed hands recently

My conclusion first, good value, tasty food in a almost cozy atmosphere. The details - the out side if this pub looks like an old English pub should. Inside the are flintlocks and muskets on the walls. Wooden beams and open fires, but it didn't feel as olde worldy as it should have. Still it was neat and clean. The food offering was good, not massive choice, but enough. I was very happy with my halloumi and mushroom burger. Often with this sort of thing the mushroom has too much liquid still in it and the whole thing goes soggy, not here. I'm happy to report that Tabasco was available. This is not one of those places where the person bringing you your food has to say "what we have here is an foam of this and a reduction of that, a top a bed of the other". No it good honest pub food. In an honest pub.

Disappointed. We used to visit this pub regularly over many years with the previous owners as we live locally. We were looking forward to returning today for Sunday lunch. No greeting when we arrived. No smile. Vegetables were extremely hard. Roast potatoes hard. Yorkshire puddings burnt on edges. Beef and pork meats were average. No condiments were offered and my 97 year old Mum had to ask. Puddings ok. Shame😩

Lovely pub. Menu excellent and varied. Staff attentive. Food reasonable priced and lovely. Owner really nice man. Would recommend to anyone. Please try it and you will return. Five stars.

Great pub. Visited on route to Cornwall. Great pub food. We kept it simple with sandwiches but a great sandwich is a lost art, not here, they were wonderful. Great with the kids and dog as well. We will visit again for sure

A little disappointing. No atmosphere at all. The food was good, but not great. Service was pretty bad, we were forgotten about so long waits between courses.

Good dinner served well buy temp staff .holding the Fort. Friendly people and customers Noticed baby changing facility in place in lady's loo nothing in place should male need to do task . Nice meal n time .

So we decided to walk from Yarcombe in Devon to this Inn seeing reviews, it was a 45mins walk which is fine, when got there very welcoming staff and friendly and helpful atmosphere lovely, ordered food which was really nice and drinks good selection, this is in a place called Marsh just off the A303 and a lovely looking village with friendly people, we would go again and recommend, but think should have taxi numbers for people who would like to be able to not have to worry about driving or walking

Excellent Sunday lunch on our first time visit, we will be back soon!

We were staying in a house nearby and were happy to find this public house. We ate there three times this week and everything was excellent, lovely selection of well cooked food and delightful hosts. If you are in the area please call in as you will not be disappointed in the food or service

IMPRESSED !!! Wow, probably the cleanest pub/restaurant that I have ever been to. The food is cooked to perfection. Lovely staff and dog friendly. I have booked another meal whilst I am in the area. If I lived near I would make it my local.

a very good find and great food

We have just had a fantastic meal, the food was exceptional. The staff were all really friendly too. We had walked there from a close by camp site where we were staying with our caravan, but had last minute realised we had run out of gas and therefore couldn't cook the meal we had brought with us. The walk there was OK, but we knew there was some steep hills on the way back, so asked about taxi's, but they tried 4 taxi companies and could not get a taxi for love nor money. Bless them, they went out of their way and got us a lift back to our camp site via a local friend. Truly grateful that these lovely people are about and brings the British spirit back into communities and especially on the queen's jubilee weekend 🙌 😇🥰 THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

We stopped here for lunch on the way to our weekend getaway, it was absolutely delightful. The food was great, the staff were so lovely, the overall experience was perfect. Would highly recommend.

Lovely Sunday lunch. Service was a little slow. Most staff were friendly and chatty, others were a little sullen. Overall we would go back.

Reasonable value and service but to be fair we only had a toasted sandwich. Seems popular, having been there a few times always busy. Not five stars because I can only comment on what we had.

Huge portions of excellent food and great beer. Glad that we don't live too far away! A favourite, best steak and kidney pie ever! Every time we go I think I'll try something different but it doesn't happen!

Thoroughly enjoyed our lunchtime meal. I enjoyed the pea and mint soup with really yummy warm focaccia bread all very nicely presented. Had a avocado and pepper sandwich which was also very good. Will definitely return. Very accessible off the A302...so handy for those travelling from the south to Devon/Cornwall.

Came for lunch at 2.20pm and they'd stopped serving food. On a Sunday? It's a perfectly normal lunch time. So many of these pubs have got so lazy and don't care about customers since covid.

First time to The Flintlock inn lovely food nice atmosphere drinks very reasonably priced, all food cooked to a high standard staff very friendly,fantastic vegan wine. Highly recommended.we will be back.

This was our first visit since the change of ownership/lockdown and we were delighted to find that the previous high standards have been maintained. The menu for main courses wasn't quite as extensive as before as they are having to build up again but was nevertheless sufficiently varied for all tastes. Imaginative and well-prepared selection of vegetables. Pleasant and efficient service with all orders now taken at the table. Lastly both menu and particularly wine list compare favourably in both quality and price with other establishments in the area.

Had a great meal at The Flintlock Inn this evening. Very good service and exceptional value for money. If you're in the neighbourhood do yourself a favour and stop to eat, you will be glad you did.

Delightful hidden gem ☺️ Great menu, freshly cooked with excellent quality produce. Parsnip gratin, had so much flavour we had to ask for the recipe. Very warm friendly service.

Stopped off for a bite to eat on our way home from Cornwall to Kent. Friendly staff, quick service and excellent food. We both had the chicken katsu curry. Thoroughly enjoyed it and well be sure to stop the next time we're passing.

A very nice inn with a very welcoming atmosphere, good service and good food from a varied menu. The choice of wines was also very good as was the vfm. Luckily we only have a 20 minute drive to get there so we shall be going back.

A very inhospitable Inn! I called at 8,30pm and requested food which was refused despite food being served and the Inn open until 10pm! The proprietor refused to provide any food at all. Disgraceful service and certainly not in the spirit of an Inn!

A really lovely eating experience at the pub that is just slightly off the beaten track. I only dropped a star as the interior and place mats, cutlery etc are somewhat dated. However, the staff and food are exceptional. I would put this in the upper tier of what most people would regard as 'pub food' - I had the stuffed chicken and the other half had pork chop. Both were absolutely delicious and we loved every morsel. If you are in the area I strongly suggest you visit.

Loved it...the food was excellent, my husband had seabass, I had the chicken, ham and leek pie. Both delicious, well presented and the desserts were equally good. My husband felt it was the best chocolate brownie he had had in a long time. Friendly service. Would recommend.

Just finished our meal, and we’re so pleased we found this amazing place. Food was home cooked, reasonable portions, great price, amazing staff and beautiful settings. We enjoyed the food so much we forgot to take photos of it So yum! We will be back.

First time here, but we’ll definitely be back. Really carefully cooked food, full of flavour. All four of us had different meals and everything was very good indeed. Not sillly prices either! Good atmosphere and service.

Really good pub and a lovely setting. Great garden suitable for dogs. The baked cheese cake is to die for and the pies are also very good. The staff are very friendly, polite, and welcoming. Would recommend a visit.

Great food friendly staff well worth a visit

My wife and l have not been here for a few years, so we didn’t know what to expect, as new owners had taken over. We were greeted warmly and shown to our table, everything was clean and safe. Drinks followed swiftly and given menus. Not an extensive menu, but a good choice. I ordered leek and ham pie and my wife steak and kidney. I have travelled widely around the uk and we both agreed this food was fit for kings and queens. It was flavoured so delicately and tasted so deliciously. We couldn’t stop smiling. Credit tol the chef and being quite local we will be returning whenever we can. Fantastic, well done you guys. l will spread the word.

Wife and I stopped off here the other day on the return journey from West Cornwall to Mid Surrey for a lunch break. Not the first time!Traffic was appalling so we arrived maybe an hour later than we had booked which was no problem. Nice warm welcome.Both had moules mariniere which was seriously good, just right for lunch, washed down with a pint of Otter's Best bitter, lovely! Wife said that the chocolate brownie was superb.We will be back.Note that The Flintlock does not open early in the week at present.

For ten years the Flintlock has always been our MUST lunch-stop on our twice-yearly journey from Surrey to Cornwall. Hassan and Harriet maintain an immaculately clean bar-restaurant with shiny clean tables - not just a quick spray and wipe. Front of house Hassan is always gentle and welcoming; from the kitchen Harriet provides an excellent menu of good food and, in normal times, a wide menu. Our favourite is the Beef Lasagne followed by a lovely sticky toffee pudding. We were there eating outside in the rain just before eating-in was possible. Hassan in mask brought out our food under a brolly! Still great! Wonderful to see that H & H and the Flintlock have weathered the pandemic.

Lights were on but no one was in

After 7 months of not seeing my Mum who lives in Cornwall and we come from Surrey we met at the Flintlock Inn for a long overdue catch up. We phoned to say that we would be late due to my Mum getting lost and they couldn’t have been more helpful and welcoming when we finally arrived. It was a wonderful day in the sunshine with fabulous food and the staff were really friendly and made our day very special.

We had a lovely afternoon here with the family. Food was gorgeous. Really recommend it. Lovely play area for the Grandkids. Covid rules adhered to. Really friendly considering what this sector of business is going through. Loved it. !!!!

Lovely location. Great garden. Very peaceful in the (cold) April sunshine. Attentive staff. Menu just the right size. Enough to choose from but not overwhelming. Ale well kept. Food excellent.

We've been to the flintlock many times over the years and always had a lovely meal , Visited the Flintlock last night for the first time since before lockdown with the New owners in charge and we must say we thoroughly enjoyed our meal lovely fresh ingredients and ample portion (our dog did well) at a reasonable price, just a shame they were so quiet, not of their own doing l must add as they were extremely friendly and helpful but purely down to Covid such a shame So all we can say if you want good food in a charming friendly Inn visit the Flintlock as we will certainly be back ( good luck Hassan 👍) and thank you for a lovely meal

The Flintlock is doing Takeaway during lockdown. We just had to write and say what a good service we had. We phoned our order in and were given a timed slot to collect. You just park in the car park and your food is brought out freshly cooked and delivered to the car. I had steak and kidney pie while my wife had fish and chips . We both had sticky toffee pudding.The food was excellent,piping hot and restaurant quality delicious and as good as we could expect had we dined at the Flintlock. We shall order again from the extensive menu which includes a range of nice things including Duck and Lamb Shank. All reasonably priced. The new owners have definitely kept up the Flintlock tradition of good food and the takeaway was an absolute delight.
