The Fish House in Southend-on-Sea

I have always liked the food from here but I have just ordered fish and chips from here and it is inedible. The fish had black hard bits in it and the chips were green and mush it has all gone in the bin Not happy

Lovely food but was disappointed to hear your staff call the lady in front of me who was trying to get her food rude. All this lady was doing was asking to get her food from the counter. The thing that made it worse all the time I was waiting for my food they were talking about it. The lady was actually sitting in and could probably hear it. Such a Shame as she did nothing wrong

My husband and I went to The Fish House for the second time after a bad first experience. We wanted to give The Fish House a second chance and hoped the first experience was out-of-character for what we heard was a very good fish & chips takeaway. Sadly though, the experience the second time around was just as poor as the first. As vegetarians, we were chuffed we found a fish & chips takeaway that provided options for us. On both occasions, we chose the vegan chips (i.e. chips cooked in separate oil to that of the meat and fish) and vegan battered sausages. Sadly though, the vegan battered sausage wasn’t great and tolerable at best. It was very well done / burnt / crunchy on both occasions. The batter tasted okay though. The most disappointing part of the meal was the chips. On both occasions, they were lukewarm and seemed as though they were cooked in oil that wasn’t very hot. They also tasted undercooked and were flavourless. My husband put the chips in the air fryer on ‘max crisp’ when we got home which markedly improved them. To all vegetarians and vegans out there: either be prepared to air fry the food when you get home or take your custom elsewhere. The food was not worth the money or wait.

Im a season ticket holder at Southend United. I go every time they are at home. I have been going for years. This chippy must have been taken over a few months ago. They used to be really friendly. But the last few times. The staff serving have been so rude and miserable. Appreciate I'm only ordering a chippy and it's not a restaurant. But putting a smile on your face doesn't cost anything. Owner needs to retrain staff. Foods fine but I can't be bothered to go again. I'd rather eat the naff burgers at the Stadium.

Take away chip shop one of the best in town

waited 20 minutes for my order, during which time I was served by 10 people who arrived after me plus 8 delivery driver. This is nonsense. That was the last time when I order here.

Medium cod and chips for two. I have had fish fingers that are bigger, apart from the size the fish was dry and overcooked. The best thing we had was the buttered roll! I will stick with Oldhams up the road in future, this place is not for me.

Really disappointed with how I was treated today. I've been a regular for the past couple of years and recommended this place to sooo many other locals, mum and allergy groups online as they have a GF range. I arrive this evening, order placed and payed for, visablely heavily heavily pregnant and asked use the toilet ( I was bursting to wee and had been in traffic for 30 mins prior) crossing my legs holding my bump asked really politely... The woman behind the counter told me I wasn't allowed to use the toilet as its for staff only was really rudly said it. ( fair enough but I would of thought she could of has some human decency and compassion as a woman) Had I not already paid for my food to collect, I would of cancled/ not placed my order and left. Never going back there. Even the other staff looked shocked and the other lady actually quietly said sorry looking embarrassed on behalf of the other lady. I had to detour en route home to get to a toilet asap food ended up cold and wasn't enjoyable. I'm sure it's actually illegal to refuse a pregnant woman use of a toiet. I could half understand if I was just walking past but I was a paying customer and a regular. Should be Ashamed your self. The only takeaway in Southend I could safely order from allergy wise and now I won't ever go back. The money me and my friends and family have spent over time. Even Done a 12 person order summer over £100. Completely unreasonable and caused me significant discomfort and pain.

Fantastic fish & chips and excellent service

Just finished a cod dinner for three people which cost over £30.00. The fish was no more than 5mm thick and an inch of greasy batter, I wont be going back.

Imo consistently the best chips in Southend area!! Even on matchday when people are queuing out the doors, the staff work so hard to get everyone served as quickly as possible.

Very fresh, crispy fish served in a traditional manner. Eat in but can ve crowded so take-away is a reasonable option. Vegan food available 👍

I came twice. The first time I had to throw away the chips, which were dripping with oil. I thought I should give the food a second chance, so I came back a second time and only had the fish: it was soaked in oil, and that was actually the only thing you could taste: oil. I forced myself to finish the fish, but the amount of oil I ingested gave me such a stomachache that I woke up in the middle of the night to vomit.

Fish and chips always good and quick service even when busy.Had cod and chips but no mushy peas.

Just seemed a bit pricey, but what we had was nice.

My wife and I ordered our sit down meal for our wedding to cater for 63 people. It all turned up on time and steaming hot. We advised nick that there were eight tables that needed to be served. Nick and his team carefully made sure each persons order was in the correct bag. Nothing was missing, no order was wrong, the food was perfect. The sit down meal is obviously a fairly big part of the wedding and the fish house made it perfect. We couldn't recommend these guys enough. Nick, if you see this, Amy and Wes send our love and best.

Best chips in town, always pop in when I fancy chips, nice cod too! And it's not even my local chippy, it's that good I travel from leigh!

Fresh cod, fresh chips, both were delicious especially the chips. Good prices too, they do a small cod and chips for £6.70 which is unbelievable. We had medium as they didn’t have large left, chips was £4.50 though but it was one of the best chips ever, really soft and flavoursome.

Great fish and chips to takeaway although there is some seating. So fresh and ver efficient staff get in and out quickly. Great small fish and chip specials at great prices.

The worst fish and chips I ever had, The service was terrible, Asked me to wait 30 minutes and gave me a rubbery fish and mushy chips, and paid for 2 medium fish and gave one medium and one small fish.

Always order from here as they have amazing gluten free options, we order off Deliveroo usually and for first time they forgot something (being national fish and chip day I couldn’t blame them for the mistake) within fifteen minutes of me calling they had made a fresh meal and brought it (completely not what they usually do) so grateful and as always the meal was 10/10

Used to be the best around here but our visit on Friday was really disappointing the chips were an inedible mush, one of the fish one was okay the other wasn’t cooked long enough, had to bin most of it, what’s happened there?

This used to be the best chip shop around. No idea what has happened, recently, but it has really gone downhill. Everything is greasy. Tastes like the oil isn't hot enough.

My favourite chippy in the whole of Southend by far

Called in yesterday for a quick meal after a long day, asked for small cod and small chips and was quite surprised when it was £10, but hey, inflation etc! Got the meal home, smelt gorgeous, but the fish was almost inedible, batter all fallen of the fish it was so greasy , the chips were ok, but nothing special! So disappointed, hadn’t used the shop for years as I have a very good one just up the road (not open Mondays), and I won’t be using it again…once bitten!

Fantastic had along day was hungry and the food was warth the wait.

Very disappointed with the food. Twice now they have given me the wrong vegan pie, and it was very hard and inedible, the vegan burger was burnt and tasted awful. The chips were mostly bad and inedible, weren't warm, let alone hot. I wouldn't recommend them to anybody.

Used to get chips from here for my kids years ago, it was a lot better then, bit disappointed last time I visited.

Fish was very nice, but the battery was extremely soggy and wet and had stuck to the paper, chips were ok.

Regularly go here now as their gluten free batter on the fish is the nicest in town.

I have been going here for nearly 20 years and it was always very good, recently it appears to of lost its way. I appreciate that prices are going up and I am happy to pay, but the quality is sorely missing and there seems to be more batter than fish. It’s strange that since they have had Ubereats, Just Eat and Deliveroo they seem to of become complacent, but are much busier.

I'm not sure what they cook the food in, but it tasted vile. I'm guessing it's the oil used... nasty! Savaloy was hard, tasted nice, but far too hard to enjoy. Usually soft at other chip shops.

Exceptional fish and chips! Probably the best in Southend. Very very clean; excellent service, very polite staff. There is very limited street parking, which can be a problem during busy times. Been coming here regularly several years now. Still as awesome as it was!

Good fish and chips, but terrible manners behind the counter. Rectified a wrong takeaway order, but only after the lady serving us accused my niece of not saying her order properly - apparently ‘2 cod and chips’ means 2 bits of cod and one lot of chips according to lady!

The chips were nice but this place is massively let down by the customer service. It is poor. The lady behind the till is incredibly rude. Very arrogant. Wouldn't touch this place with a barge pole. Not coming back. Would it kill you to be nice?

We really enjoyed our haddock and chips. They were cooked fresh as we arrived, very yummy! The staff were friendly. We were welcomed to sit outside to eat.

As with most fish and chip shops it can be perfect one day but on another not quite as good, but generally very good.

After helping our son move in we ordered a fish supper with delivery, never again. £60 for , 1x fish and chips, spring roll and chips, saveloy and chips, 3 bread rolls and 21 chicken nuggets. The chips were cold, soggy and mashed together, the fish, looked excellent, but was very dry. All came rapped in paper all greasy, why don’t they cardboard trays/ cartons and be more presentable. A terrible meal which spoilt a rather successful move day.

I ordered online and when ordered turned up there was my steak and kidney pie missing- So called to shop and they basically said sorry can’t sent you another one - so get a refund off app - thanks that’s my dinner, it was not the app that forgot my pie it was your shop - and now I don’t have my dinner and you have lost a customer. And if you treat your customers with that attitude I won’t be surprised if you loose more customers- The fault was your, and you did absolutely nothing to rectify.

Fancied fish & chips when arrived staff was friendly got what we wanted got home and food was burnt and tasted burnt , fish was rubbery , felt like we was eating what was left over from lunch , batter on the fish had no taste and was also rubbery . Will not be going back such a shame.
