The Fish House in Brentwood

We've bought takeaway here for years and it has always been great. Last night we got fish and chips for four of us. Unfortunaly, it was dry and probably overcooked (though it was quite a thick portion so this might be part of the reason). Some of the chips were also over cooked. We probably only ate half of it. We will give them another try but at £28 we would expect better than this.

Lovely gluten free fish and chips. Fish lovely and thick. Batter light and crispy, chips perfect. We are a family of Coeliacs and it is hard to find fish and chip shops that cater for us. Would definitely recommend. COVID friendly 👍

I do like a fish'n'chipper with seating - a sign of advanced civilsation I always say. Jnfortuneately in Virus World we can't sit - not in at least although a church bench did beckon once meals were purchased. A pity because the chips were excellent, my saveloy was a suitable saveloy, service was friendly and the place clean and tidy.One to return to in better times methinks.

Very good. Friendly ,Very Clean, Just off the High Street down St Thomas Road on the left. Food is always good and mostly cooked fresh for you. we travel from Romford, just for the fish and chips and have made meany visits.

We come here on a regular basis because the food is always fresh and cooked superbly,staff are so friendly they know us by name and our order before asking. Never had a bad experience here.

i work locally and we use the shop on a daily/weekly basis and i find the owner and his family very welcoming, friendly and a pleasure to deal with. I cannot recommend the food in there highly enough!!!!!!

Visited the fish and chip shop to grab a portion of chips on way home. I won’t go again! After waiting 20+ minutes and lots of others who came in later than me being served before me I asked politely for the chips or my money back. I was told rudely “we don’t do refunds!” And “you will have to have a sausage or something else if you don’t like it” ... I have to say I was surprised they were so rude that wasn’t called for!

My husband recently showed me this place for the best fish and chips . As my kids are fan of fish so he took us there. I must say it was absolutely good decision to drive 15 mile for that meal . Kids love it and they want to come back . Service is really good as-well. I would highly recommend for the fish and chip lover to try this Resturant out.

Well what can I say called in the fish house for the first time and omg what lovely fish and chips not greasy service very good lovely staff and boy they no how to make a proper cup of tea .we will definitely come again

The Fish House is my regular shop for a takeaway (and my favourite) and I ordered yesterday it again yesterday. We (6 portions) were all very dissapointed with the chips which were soggy and white which was a big shame as normally the chips are excellent. I rang up to complain (something I wouldn't usually ever do) and was told that they had had the problem all day (then why not say something at the time) as it was a new brand of potatoe and despite using fresh oil and cooking for longer the chips still remained under cooked. Having spent £60 and was only really after a few free bags of chips next time I come in but was offered nothing, I'll be trying CHRIS' in Ongar Road next time as I've heard good things about this.

went there last Thursday, overhear a conversation between the owner and the client and I was extremely disappointed by the way that he was treating the client.

Visited with some friends who were hungry... We had to wait for the place to re-open, for the evening 'shift', which was a bit annoying but understood. It was worth the wait... Huge portions. Lovely cod and chips. Will return.

Just a lovely lunch at the fish house. You always have to wait as the fish is cooked to your order- but it's not long. Beautiful fresh cod and chips. Good portions and love their home made tartar sauce. We will be back

I remember the Chariot in Brentwood high street in the 80s and fantastic to find somewhere even better in 2019. Had a sit down meal and great staff and great food. Thank you

Visiting Brentwood for first time and we wanted fish and chips close to the high street, a bonus for us that we could eat them in-house too. A quick Google search revealed The Fish House and boy were we were in for a treat. Superb lightly battered cod (real deal no mushy grey cod ‘substitute here) and perfectly cooked chips with a salad garnish and lemon wedge = 3 very happy diners. Portions were generous.

Outstanding quality. They do a gluten free batter for your fish on request for a modest extra charge, absolutely delicious! Service is excellent, premises impeccably clean, friendly staff. A must visit. I try to go once a week. It's that good!

Fabulous fish cooked to order. You can telephone in advance to place your order or just turn up. Staff are friendly and homemade tartare sauce is delicious.

Best takeaway in Brentwood! First time we have eaten from here and will be making it a regular occurrence!

Clean, well presented and good value chippy with some seating which offers most of the usual choices. The day time £2.40 specials are a good option especially on a cold day - your choice of a sausage fishcake or nuggets with beans mushy [peas or curry sauce should suit most people.

Out and about with 1st Weald Brook Scouts tasting the chips in Brentwood Town Centre and the Fish House came a good second. Staff were friendly and the chips were freshly cooked, Portion size good and they discovered that if you sprinkled them with sugar they tasted like doughnuts - doh!

Tasty fish and chips which is freshly cooked and they have a good choice of food for a chip shop, basic seating but very clean and functional

Ordered ahead to pick food up but still had a short wait & a shame they didn't have Rock but at least they were open on New Year's Eve!

If you are a fish n' chip aficionado look no further than the Fish House.Everything is top class including the ultra friendly "Ash" who manages the establishment.My wife and i have revisited the fish house on many occasions since we first discovered it in the summer and we have yet to be disappointed.

Popped in last night to get fish and chips for the family, freshly cooked, crispy batter, steaming hot chips, good sized portions and great friendly service, not used The Fish House before but will do from now on when I am visiting Brentwood.

Went their for lunch. My small skate and chips with salad dressing was great. Partner had mini cod, chips, peas and a drink for Six pounds. Only one quibble. I had to pay for my tea at one pound thirty, A pot of tea at that price would be more pleasing.

Choice is good, good deals on a monday (free chips), fish is always tasteful and the staff is kind. Also very nice mushy pees. Our favorite place to go and get our fish and chips!

There is a fish and chip shop in Bournemouth named Chez Fred and every time we visit friends in Bournemouth we visit this top class restaurant.Mind you its that good you have to wait a fair while to be seated.Today we found its equal in Brentwood.Just off the high st is The Fish House.The first thing you notice on entering is how spotlessly clean and modern everything is.Our orders were taken immediately(mini cod fillet,chips, mushy peas, salad plus a cup of tea)£6.I also ordered a portion of homemade tar tar sauce and curry sauce.The fish is cooked fresh so you have to wait around 10 minutes but when the food arrived it was well worth the wait.The chips were crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy in the middle.The cod was more than large enough and the taste was magnificent.Melt in the mouth cod with a very light crunchy batter.The curry sauce was again spot on as was the tar tar sauce.The staff were extremely efficient and pleasant.If there is a better fisn n chip shop in Essex i have yet to come across it and my wife and I do love our fish and chips.We have been searching for a restaurant such as The Fish House for ages .Goes without saying we will be back and i will pass on my observations to my friends.This establishment should be in the running for fish n chip shop of the year..well done to all concerned.

Ordered fish and chips, and sausage and chips last Sunday, and waited for fresh chips to be cooked. This was put in the sausage and chips, but not in the fish and chips that I ordered. The fish and chips had barely any chips (which were cold and hard) and none of the freshly cooked chips.I then tweeted this to their Twitter account, and as a result, they blocked me - it is a real shame because in their shop, they say to follow them on social media. I simply shared a photo of my fish and chips that was substandard for the price (£5.50), and they did not even bother replying, and instead expressed micro-aggression and blocked me. Safe to say they've lost my business.

The fried calamari was delicious, the batter used was nothing I've tried before. The fried haddock was also spot on. Most places I find, put too much batter on not much fish but not this place! The chips were also good - definitely fresh as opposed to most fish & chippies where the chips are generally stale. Will definitely be visiting again! :-D

My friend and I have a card which is stamped and after 6 visits you get a freebie. The meal consists of mini cod, chips, side salad, mushy peas and a lovely cup of tea. Lovely staff , great banter. Best meal in Brentwood for us.

3 day visit to the UK to visit Mum. Had to stop in have their fish & chips again. Friendly staff, fresh food and the place is very clean. Loved the music from the Sweeney playing in the back ground. Highly recommend.

Took my parents for lunch here as I'd heard good reports. It was very busy but the staff rearranged tables to fit us in. The cod was tasty and cooked just right. The chips were traditional and not at all greasy. Lovely mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce. All served hot and with a friendly smile.

We've had numerous visits to The Fish House which speaks for itself however last night we tried delivery via deliveroo as I have flu (yes I'm a poet haha). Food is always better here than the average chip shop with out being pretentious. Warm and friendly staff with lovely atmosphere on each visit. We had a hiccup with deliveroo which was not the fault of The Fish House but they dealt with the problem (missing items) and we had another lovely meal. I had chicken and salad for a change but highly recommend the fish and the children's chicken is perfect. Husband loved his burger too. Always feel like there is extra attention to detail when it comes to the produce and cooking of the food. Only one teeny tiny thing is that the chocolate ice cream was a bit powdery but that really is neither here nor there in the grand scheme of things.

We went there with the whole family and we spent a pleasant evening. The place is spartan but clean, friendly and well-run. Most importantly the fish is absolutely moist, and tasty... After all, that's supposed to be the most important reason to go there. Try the baby calamari, a quite small portion but delicious. Chips were ok but not exceptional. The price is reasonable (with a +20% if you stay in rather than take away). On Sunday and Monday chips are free but only if you order regular or large cod or haddock. Be careful, it closes at 9 pm. Worth a visit!

Popped in lunchtime with a colleague we both had sausage in batter & chips, the chips were freshly cooked however the sausage in batter was a bit cold. However this won't put me off for another visit.

Always lots of people there, but you can usually get a table without waiting long. All the food and drinks are usually in stock. The food quality is good and the prices great, as is the choice of drinks.

Great food! Tucked down a side street, so easy to miss. But don't! Tasty, served with a (genuine) smile and fairly priced.

First time visit for some take away having heard people at work say good things about it. Chips were firm and not at all greasy and the batter on the fish was the best I have had from any take- away. Will definitely be going again.

I work with adults with learning disabillties and have taken our clients there a few times on a visit on friday 4th november we was refused entry said they are to noisey at times and it was not fair on there clientele one of our clients is very autistic and this made him very distressed as he did not understand why he could not eat there also the other clients did not understand we had to tell them they had no fish that day i think this is discusting were are our clients freedom of choice and the exceptance in the community i feel very stongly about this

Only had a few days in Brentwood so had to have good fish & chips. So my Mum brought me here. Really good food. Great friendly service. The place is very clean. I wish I had time to go back again. Highly recommend.

My wife has been buying our fish and chips super from the fish house for the last six-seven month and finds the owner as well as his staff to be the most pleasant people in the industry. The others are not as polite and needs to take a leaf from Mr FIsh house's book. The fish house excels at 'service' and quality. We use to buy our fish super from the flying fish, but only by default as it is the nearer to where we live. However, since trying out the menu from Fish house, the flying fish can indeed fly away , as they are rude, uncouth and the quality of the fish leaves a lot to be desired, without ever being missed. Keep up the good work and mainly the excellent service , Mr Fish House owner.

We only use for a take away, but it's the best in Brentwood. The one thing you notice is that you cannot smell the oil when you visit , always a good sign the oil is fresh.

We use this as a take away although you can dine in. The Fish House appears clean and has good hygiene standards.The menu contains the usual variety contained in a chippie these days but we have always ordered fish. The portions are of good size and well cooked. Had a concern over a scampi order recently. It was discoloured and did not taste good. Made the manager aware of this by phone as we live in village a few miles away. He said he would investigate a call back . Sill waiting for the call

We always get our fish and chips from here. We've never eaten in and have always got it to takeaway. The fish is lovely and all cooked fresh. The staff are really nice and friendly too. Proper fish and chips not a kebab shop doing fish n chips! You always get value for money.

Went for a fish meal having come back to England for a visit. Good piece of skate and my companion had some nice haddock. Good food at reasonable price. The staff were friendly.

Though the place is in an allee it was very good there to eat the Staffs were very helpful in selecting the kind of Fish to eat,what really fascinated me is that the fish is prepared fresh there,and the eating atmosphere is very good and relaxing,the toilet is clean too.Will recommend it for people to eat in.

Can't go wrong eating here. Does what it says on the door and gives great nosh. There is a good selection on the menu with specials too. They take orders over the phone which is very convenient.

Our food was cooked to order. Yes... Freshly cooked not old crap off the hot plate like most other chippies. Guys were nice, helpful and patient. Food was great. Could do with more dessert options. Came here because you've served my elderly mother many times and she raved about your shop. Immaculately clean. Good pricing and honest advice on portion sizing when I asked. Nice cuppa tea too. Well done. Happy to recommend to Brothers... (and their sisters!).

Decent fish and chips is hard to come by, especially in Brentwood, but The Fish House is consistently excellent. Cod portions always large, the chips fresh and still hot once we've brought them home. I particularly love the salt & pepper squid, although the portion size is a lot smaller than it used to be (6 pieces rather than anything up to 11!). Keep meaning to eat in but there's nowhere else we'd go for chips!

We've had takeaways from here quite a few times now, and I've got to say it's the best fish and chips by far! The batter is light and not greasy and the chips are delicious!Would definately recommend this chip shop to everyone!Also I like the fact that even if you phone and order, they don't actually wrap it up until you get there, so it doesn't get cold.

We use the Fish House as a take away on an irregular basis when we are in the Brentwood area. Each time we have used it the Fish and Chips have been very good and the packaging has kept the food crisp during our journey home.The menu choice is good, the atmosphere is always friendly, and the restaurant area is kept spotlessly clean.Would recommend it.

Excellent service for 80th birthday party catered for over 35 people. The food was hot and came in individual named boxes which was great help. Delivery charge was free and food was excellent the chips were crispy and the fish was beautiful as good as restaurant was not soggy like normal delivery of take away chips. Was very impressed with quality of food and everyone complimented on food and said best fish and chips that were delivered as tasted fresh. My dad thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend the service for large party as accommodated with delivery times and on a Sunday. Would give ten stars if could as they helped make day special thank you to Sally and team.

Nothing much to say average fish and chips, not much atmosphere in restaurant to be fair but if in town its fine for a quick eat

We have takeaway fish and chips from here every Friday and it's by far the freshest and tastiest. The people are lovely too.

My father and I met up with my aunt and niece for a family lunch and catch up after Christmas. The staff were really helpful to make room for a wheelchair, attentive and so friendly. The food excellent as ever- tempura prawns light, whole tail scampi perfectly cooked, cod super fresh- and chips to die for. Thank you so much.

Have been to this fish and chip shop quite a few times! I have tried the fish and the battered sausage and both are great. The guys cooking it really know what they are talking about and the ladies serving and helpful and polite!Try the curry source is worth it!

Collected 2x large cod chips with a saveloy...never checked contents before...oops!15 chips each...which tasted oily and cold. The cod was tasty but wasrnt a large piece.Saveloy was cold as well...

I visited the Fish House during a lunchtime, and having read the tripadvisor sign on the front door I thought I would pay it a visit. The lay out is very old fashioned and I thought it was lovely. I ordered the large cod, chips, peas with a roll. It was freshly cooked and the mushy peas were substantial and in a separate pot. The Cod was cooked to perfection, a light batter. I really enjoyed my meal and will return.

Looked good and nice and clean but the portions were the size of a child's menu and the chips were soggy where they had been left warming over the top of the deep fat fryer in their baskets. Expensive for what we ate.

First time at this Fish and Chip shop! We had a take away. I was surprised how cheap this place was as walking in to the restaurant itself it is extremely clean and well looked after! Staff were friendly and the home made Tatar sauce was very nice! I would recommend!

I visit The Fish House every Monday and am always greeted respectfully by name and staff take the time to have a jocular moment. The premises are very clean and the quality of food is first class and fresh, with a good range of hot foods, unlike many others. Interms of value for money I am very satisfied which is why, despite trying others, I continue to return to the best fish and chip shop in the area.

All the staff are friendly and helpful, the food is cooked perfectly, I don't remember the last time I had fish and chips that were crisp but not greasy, these guys get it right every time. The large fish is genuinely LARGE and there is a great selection of other dishes. The new prawns are great too. The chef's are always washing their hands, and cleaning the work surfaces, and even when the place is busy you are getting great service.
