Really interesting succinct menu for both brunch and lunch the next day. Awesome ingredients that are used very inventively. Lovely staff and a fun setting too….cannot speak highly enough of this place, and the chef should write a cook book as her dishes are unique

This bustling restaurant is situated at the end of the Main Street in Rye. Three of us went for lunch and while initially I was disappointed that I couldn’t have a standard toasted sandwich of some sort, what I got was even better. It was smoked salmon with a beautiful salad and fried potatoes. The others had goats cheese and beetroot salad and some tacos. All delicious. It was clear why it was so busy. Obviously it’s a well known spot and didn’t disappoint. The rest room was the best proportioned and decorated I have seen anywhere for some time. Well done.

So, we were staying in Dymchurch, took a rail trip to Hastings, was so underwhelmed, we returned to Rye. What a beautiful town, so much to see and do and plentiful eateries. That said. Many had ( plastic menus) or were generic chains. Then we stumbled accross the fig. Short unpretentious menu, perfectly described and executed to perfection. A Thai pork bowl came with fluffy rice and a mint, Thai basil and coriander salad topping plus peanuts and the nicest dressing ever. I think fish sauce based. My wife had an aubergine dish which was full of flavour and texture. Very impressive. This was lunch so, despite having a dessert menu, we passed. Wine list is again short but versatile. If I could just point out a small flaw. I am a big fan of English local wine, especially sparkling, and try to support these suppliers. I paid a little more for a local bottle of fizz and TBH it was amazing. Only when I poured us second glasses did I realise it was only 7.5% and had apple juice added. Again, it was lovely but £34 a bottle for low alcohol percentage, not sure. Maybe a good idea to put the % on the wine menu. Greeting, staff, location all excellent. Small but beautiful Bistro, spotless washrooms. Go here soon before you won't be able to get a table. Well done to all.

We heard about the Fig first time whilst watching Masterchef the Professionals, when Rosie Furnival, head chef at the Fig, appeared on the program. We were thinking of going as we go to Rye quite often. A work colleague had already gone to the Fig and told us it was really nice, so we decided to book a celebratory Valentines meal there. We had the salmon, filo tart, cauliflower tikka, goats cheese, ox check and arancini. As desert , we had the pavlova and chocolate crémeux. It was delicious. Not the cheapest, but each dish was shared between the two of us and was absolutely yummy. The staff were so friendly and very accommodating. As we are regularly in Rye on Sunday mornings too, we will be going for breakfast there next time.

Fresh and full of flavours. A good house wine is always appreciated as well. I had the Chilli Bowl and my wife the Prawn Goan Curry. We normally stay at The George but they do rooms that we definitely need to look at. We will have to try the evening menu based upon how enjoyable our lunch was!

The Fig, Rye Food - 4.2/5 Atmosphere - 3.2/5 Service - 3.2/5 Price - 3.5/5 A tapas / small plate style restaurant offering unique and vibrant dishes , great tasting food but subpar atmosphere. A item to note is that the restaurant does not have an extractor fan above their cooking area, making the whole restaurant steam up / smell of the food being cooked, our clothes were fumigated by the smell. Would have been nice to have more ventilation. The restaurant is also rather cramped with tight spaces for tables, rather close proximity to other diners. With a 12.5% service charge and especially being in Rye, be best to see more of a service as it was subpar. Would be nice to have water poured in our glasses, frequent check backs, and more attentive service, which I noticed other customers grouching at. Our service was okay. Overall the food aspect was great, really enjoyed the dishes, something different, execution of the dishes were right, robust, flavourful and unique. It was more so the service and atmosphere of the dining aspect which makes it whole for a dinner service, it is a cramped venue, would say cosy for a day time meal which I would like to try next. For a new restaurant to try, it was sceptical to book with a £30 prepaid deposit , for non-high-end restaurant. Tuna Ceviche - Light on the Tuna , for a seafood dish I would expect to have more seafood rather than salad. Ox Cheek Barbacoa - flavourful, robust, and delicate , not over done but can taste richness. Goats Cheese and Figs - simple and elegant, not much to say for a straight forward dish. Was nice to see good quality figs. Artichokes - Delicate, light on flavour Roasted potato’s - loving the Aioli style sauce / base , worked well with the kale. Banana Cake - packed with flavour but shame it was microwaved, pipping hot and soggy.

I went there with my family after visiting lots of shops, we were quite hungry so we chose The Fig. The atmosphere was enjoyable and the service was very good however I cannot say the same for the food. Although it came quite quickly, it was not as enjoyable as I hoped. We had the burrito bowl and goan prawn curry. The proportion was surprisingly good, however, the food was very bland. The burrito bowl had spice but no flavour and only had a few token nachos (more nachos were needed). The Goa prawn curry lacked spice but was well presented. In conclusion, the atmosphere was nice and trendy but the food was OK. I will not be coming there again. In response to the owners comment: Thank you for taking time in your day to respond to my review. However, you must have mistaken us with somebody else, as we did not finish the plate. Kind regards.

The staff were relaxed and attentive, they made the effort to stop and chat where possible which was lovely! I ordered the Goan Prawn Curry which was beautifully presented and tasted delicious, this was washed down with a very crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc, dessert was the Cardamom & Bay Panna Cotta which was divine! The staff couldn't have been nicer, the vibe was spot on- cosy, warm, with a buzzy atmosphere but where we could still hear each other speak. I loved the open kitchen in the middle, where you could see Rosie and her team beavering away making the food and drinks. The small tapas- style plates were utterly delicious. We enjoyed prawn tacos, an artichoke dish (my personal favourite), the aubergine (loved it!), a cauliflower dish, goats cheese with fig and a potato dish. We had the pannacotta and a coffee to finish. All just wow. The flavours were so so good and so different. I just can't wait to return. Many thanks Rosie and your amazing team.

We had a superb evening enjoying a number of the small plates and desserts on offer. Everything was brilliant from start to finish with excellent service, food and drink. Would recommend highly if looking for Middle Eastern and Asian flavours.

Love this place, the most delicious, imaginative, food, in a great setting, very relaxed. Extremely friendly staff, Walet looked after us really well. Just wish I lived closer so I could eat here more often!
