Yummy! What else to say about a place that just envelops you in comfort. We could have said our room might have been bigger but then this is a pub with rooms and all is forgiven when you eat here. My duck was just superb, my wife had halibut, equally good. Great welcome and service we were very happy here and would thoroughly recommend!

Went for the game and wine evening, which had a set menu and matched wine pre selected for each course. Very enjoyable evening, food was very good and tasty, service excellent with some very nice Portuguese wines which We had not tried before. Friendly staff and the kitchen staff came out and received a round of applause from everyone there, which was very well deserved. My personal favourite was the venison course which was extremely tender and beautifully prepared, and the delicious panna-cotta and almond ice cream. Lovely homely setting and atmosphere.

Booked a table the day before and turned up 20 minutes early. Greeted warmly by a member of staff and shown immediately to our table. Beautiful open fire with the autumnal smell of burning logs. Menu offered and explained not to order the bread as it was automatically complimentary. Water offered as well. Waiter came over and asked regarding drinks - both ready to order as well - not a problem. Good selection of starters, main courses and desserts. Both of us opted for the beef. Waiter checked if it was acceptable as the beef was served pink. Food arrived promptly and was delicious. Two thick slices of beef, huge Yorkshire pudding, roasties, cabbage, mash and cauliflower. Absolutely delicious. Ordered desserts - lemon posset with blood orange sorbet, plum tart with almond ice cream. The desserts were absolutely gorgeous and as a result didn't last very long!!!. We haven't been here for a number of years but without a doubt we will be back as soon as possible. Fantastic food in a lovely relaxed atmosphere with such fantastic staff. Dioch yn fawr.

We stopped off here after a long walk in the morning so were absolutely famished. Luckily this great gastropub more than hit the spot. Our welcome was warm, in keeping with service that was throughout attentive and helpful. We chose starters and mains from a menu mixing familiar standards with some more interesting choices. For us that included heritage tomatoes and burrata, white crab salad and mussels - all excellent and beautifully presented. We were in truth less adventurous with our mains, three of our party of four having chosen traditional fish and chips and one choosing pea risotto. The fish and chips was excellent, the fish well cooked (and not too much batter) and the chips obviously genuinely home-made and very filling. Next time we're in the neighbourhood we'll definitely return.

When you hear the words we have a new chef then you do not know what to expect. Sadly this was not a good omen. The ingredients were fine we mainly had Fish mains but the accompanying sauces and veg just did not work. Our starters were ok, but just ok. We selected 2 deserts , the old favourite Sticky Toffee Pudding has disappeared with the previous Chef, alas. The service was a little haphazard but the 2 v young lads did their best but are obviously not trained. The morning breakfast was Ok but the ground staff had the strimmer's out from about 9.30 so if the intention was to clear the restaurant they succeeded.

The hotel we stayed in Builth for the Royal Welsh closed in December, and we found ourselves further away from the showgrounds. Felt fortunate to get a reservation since the reviews were all great. We arrived and were greeted and seated very quickly. The waitress explained the menu and gave us time to decide what to order. The entire meal was very tasty, but the appetizer was to die for! It was a smoked salmon, and is one of the best fish dishes I have ever enjoyed. The rest of the meal was very tasty, but I still have great memories about that salmon! Hope to come back again next year and enjoy the food.

On our second visit we especially enjoyed the katsu cod and monkfish starter. Great childrens options available as well including a tomato soup starter that both my children said was the best they had ever had! There was a good choice of wines and cocktails - and also a lovely selection of non-alcoholic drinks which is really nice to see.All in all, would definitely return and recommend.

Came here with my wife on recommendation from our accomodation owners, and had a really nice meal. Our expectations were high given that the Griffin has received high praise from well known critics, along with (I believe) a Michelin Plate, and the food definitely lived up to expectations. Beautifully presented, tasty and well cooked. Service was fantastic, too.Only a couple of drawbacks - the rhubarb crumble dessert is served cold. We were told this was correct but it wasn't mentioned anywhere on the menu so I think it would be worth making a note of this on the menu or mentioning to customers when ordering. Believe we were also due to get a free beer as we were staying at a partner accomodation, but this was missed - didn't want to make a fuss of it as it wasn't a big deal and I'm sure it would have been sorted if I had mentioned it. The owner did, however, remember that I had mentioned it was our honeymoon when booking and came over to offer congratulations! If you're in the area (or even if not), I'd recommend the Griffin for a lovely, well cooked meal.

We were really looking forward to dining at the Felin Fach but it fell short of the mark. £38 for three courses of what one would hope would be a flavoursome adventure in mid-range dining. Poor seasoning, overcooked fish and few combined flavours that made it anything more than average pub food trying to be fine dining. We thought it was outrageous that on a set menu you had to pay £4.50 to get a portion of jersey potatoes to accompany a fish dish that had no carbohydrate! Furthermore, they were awful! How can you go wrong with some boiled potatoes. They were in dirty skins with the eyes still in, not in any way fresh and not dressed with butter or any seasoning, dry and hard as stones. My partner was asked if he wanted boiled potatoes or chips, so he opted for the potatoes, but no mention that it would be £4.50 extra. What a rip off! The waiter should at least say, do you want any extra side dishes, which gives the customer a chance to enquire whether the main meal comes with potatoes. It felt like they were just trying to squeeze extra cash out of you. Waiting service was a bit slovenly to be honest, not particularly cheerful. We also had to chase up the aperitifs and the water. A team of fairly young waiters that appeared like they had just turned up for the their first shift. We also stood waiting at the door for seating. No Covid care either - we were not asked to track and trace or encouraged to use the sanitizer, which we did anyway.Needless to say, we will not be returning, there are better and more reasonably priced establishments all over mid-Wales where you get better value, higher quality cuisine and good service. If you want finer dining, and we did that night, and you don't mind paying a bit extra, then this is definitely not the place for you. We dine out regularly and my advice is this, if you've ever eaten well, you'll not be fooled by the Felin Fach Griffin Restaurant. Nearly £100 down the drain (for two people with one aperitif each and no wine).Go somewhere else.

Was really looking forward to this but sadly the evening did not live up to expectations from the start. On arrival parking was easy in their own smart car park. However when we arrived at the door we waited while a nearby waiter was settling a split bill at the table nearby. At no time did he acknowledge our presence. So given Covid rules, we waited for some time before another member of staff finally clocked that the people at the door who were on time for their booking might be waiting for attention. The menu looked very good. However the service was at a level I would to be expected at an average cafe rather than a premium restaurant - just a bit indifferent. The pea mousse starter was very good but the beetroot terrine was disappointing tasting of sliced beetroot and nothing else. Main course bass was tasty but the broccoli ordered arrived as green beans. Furthermore, the truffle and parmesan chips tasted burnt and frankly looked like MacDonalds on a bad day, but tasted worse - certainly no evidence of coming anywhere near any form of truffle derivative.Pudding was not as described and we had to ask for that to be remedied. While we were there, we heard another diner complain that their main dish was not what was on the menu either. Finally, on leaving the restaurant there was no goodbye or thank you. Now, it's clearly difficult to get everything right during Covid etc and the staff were probably new, but we dined at other places nearby that did not seem to suffer from these problems. Therefore we decided that sadly this would not be a restaurant we would return to which is a shame but you live and learn.

Had the staff not been wearing masks it would have felt like a normal pre Covid experience, the tables were definitely not 2 metre apart but we haven't eaten out for a while and rules change I would hate to accuse them of anything, but we did feel slightly uncomfortable but we were so hungry we decided to take a risk! The service and food was exceptional, considering how busy it was the staff were on the ball and we didn't have to wait long for anything. The food was amazing they best we have eaten for a long while.

After the recent indoor Covid restrictions had lifted, my mum's birthday was a perfect opportunity to go out for lunch and enjoy a lovely meal together as a family. So on 31st May, we visited the Felin Fach Griffin for lunch. As we arrived, a lady who I presume to be the manager showed us to our table and asked us to scan a QR code for track and trace. As I'm not completely clued up on how these work, and not wanting to be messing about on my phone whilst trying to enjoy some valuable family time, I asked the manager if we could just fill in a sheet. I was surprised when this was met by a bit of a huff and a "yeah I'll get a sheet". Afterwards I also thought that the only details they required were a name, mobile number and email address, all of which my mum had given upon booking, so surely they could just transfer this information to a track and trace system to take the hassle away from the customer upon arrival? Anyway, we ordered some drinks to start, two G&T's and one of the medium non-alcoholic ciders. Soon after we'd ordered our drinks, the waitress comes straight back and says that they do not do a medium non-alcoholic cider. I said that I'd seen it in the menu, to which she said they only did a sweeter non-alcoholic cider, so I re-opened the drinks menu to double check. She said something along the lines of 'look, I'll show you' to which I pointed out, possibly slightly embarrassingly for her, that under the 'Non-alcoholic Drinks' heading was a cider entitled 'Medium Cider' (exactly what I had ordered). No apology for the confusion, she just turned around and went straight back to the bar. Moving on to the menus. Now maybe this is an up and coming new way of laying out a menu but personally it didn't make much sense to me! Instead of the conventional 'Starters' 'Mains' and 'Desserts' headings, the menu had three vegetarian dishes, followed by three fish dishes, followed by three meat dishes. The only way to determine if they were a starter or a main course was by the price. There was then a section at the bottom which was 'From the garden' which was a list of around 8 dishes, all of which were vegetarian. Now I love when restaurants use fresh, home grown ingredients and feel that it's a great asset to be able to use vegetables that have pretty much come straight out of the ground and onto a plate, but surely they should be incorporated into every dish that is on the menu rather than just having a list of vegetarian dishes? Maybe that's where we made an error though as instead of opting for the vegetarian dishes we all chose the salt cod fritters to start followed by two chicken burgers and one pork dish. Prior to our starters arriving, we were brought some homemade bread (which turned out to be very tasty and in fact one of the only things that has saved this review from being a 1/5). However, the bread was served on a small wooden board and as there was three of us, we had six pieces of bread piled on, along with two or three squares of butter. As we hadn't been given any side plates, I asked one of the waitresses for some, to which I was met with 'O, usually everyone just digs in on the board'. I accept that if there were just two people, this would be absolutely fine, however for more than two, you really do need a side plate each, otherwise you're all trying to butter your bread on top of the other pieces of bread, or even worse, trying to butter them on the table! Also, staff should always try to make the customer feel as welcome and relaxed as possible, and this comment just made us feel like the odd ones out and that we were wrong for asking. Ten minutes later, there was no sign of the side plates so we gave up waiting. To be fair, the waitress did come to apologise that she had forgotten the side plates when we were halfway through our salt cod fritter starters, which, by the way, were fairly tasty, but nothing memorable. Before ordering the main courses, we ordered a couple of glasses of wine, one red and one white. Disappointingly, the white wasn't at all cold, in fact I think it had been out of the fridge for a good while as it was basically room temperature. Then, when the main courses arrived, we were immediately underwhelmed. Although the pork dish looked appetising, it again wasn't anything memorable and to be honest, could've been made just as good, if not better, at home. The chicken burger however, I would go as far as to say that it was the worst thing I have ever been served in a restaurant. It arrived as two upturned burger buns, one topped with some homemade slaw and a fried, coated piece of chicken, and the other with a blob of green puree and another piece of chicken. There was then a small pot of triple cooked chips and a small saucer of this green puree. The bun I would have thought had been frozen as it tasted like it had been defrosted and then lightly grilled so there was no real flavour to it. The slaw was fine, as were the chips. The chicken however, although very moist inside, was greasy and tasteless. Everything also seemed to be over salted, and there was no flavour or any kind of spices in the fried chicken coating to take your taste buds away from just a pure taste of salt! As for the green puree, I regretted tasting a little bit on the end of my fork as soon as I put it in my mouth. The only way I can describe it was like a thick, salty mayonnaise with hints of pea running through it. Absolutely disgusting. We decided we might as well take a look at the dessert menus, A. because we still wanted to try and enjoy some of the meal for my mums birthday, and B. because we wanted something to try and take the salty, greasy taste out of our palates! However, after clearing our main course plates, I would have expected the waitress to come back with some dessert menus. Instead, we were left sitting for over twenty minutes with none of the staff even looking our way or checking to see if we were OK. In the end, we had to ask for some menus to be brought over to us. I think this was unfortunately the final straw as at this point we had been sitting in the restaurant for over an hour and forty-five minutes and decided we would probably be happier going home and enjoying a Magnum out of the freezer, rather than risking spending more money on a dessert that could well have been below average!Overall, as the title suggests, we were incredibly disappointed with the level of service and the quality of the food. I understand that maybe a lot of the staff could have been new now that they've reopened indoors and may have had to recruit new waiters, however the lack of attention and also the attitude towards customers needs serious improvement. I really don't think that we were unreasonable in any way, but with the restaurant as quiet as it was, the mistakes were hard not to overlook and couldn't be blamed on short staffing or a busy service. I also noticed on the website that they have recently employed a new head chef who started in April 2021, and having visited the Felin Fach once before when the food was of a good standard, I have a bad feeling that this new chef may quickly spoil the good reputation that this restaurant has held in the past.

I’m so happy to be able to experience this wonderful restaurant once again. I had forgotten just how special this place is and how amazing their food is. They had a fantastic choice of dishes and have a good range of veggie and vegan dishes. The wine choice is also excellent and they sell a good range of wines by the half bottle. There is also a very good range of non-alcoholic drinks

We visited post lockdown. The menu was reduced (as was expected) and I was disappointed we couldn’t relax in front of the fire pre-meal (courtesy of safe distancing rules) but neither of these spoiled our lovely evening. The staff were attentive, informed and courteous. The meal was thoroughly enjoyable. Can’t remember everyone’s order but we had a varied selection with no complaints. We’ll be back ASAP.

I'm surprised at some of the reviews below. In these strange and unprecedented times I think this restaurant is doing an amazing job. We were there on the weekend, and the food and ambience was just right. The fires were lit, the service was great, the food delicious. Portions maybe a little smaller than I remember but not signifigantly so and hey I think we need to cut everyone a bit of slack at the moment or we will lose some of our favourite places...

Have been to the Griffin about 4 time previous to Covid, always had a decent meal.Very poor quality /standard of cooking on recent visit. Tiny portions. Muse Bush tasty but only a small amount of bread to dip into it. Left with a demi tasse half full of thick soup, which was to thick to drink and no spoons offered. Parfait for starter tiny dollop, with lots of bruchetta. Belly pork was a disgrace. Tiny portions with a sliver of veg and a tiny fondant potato. Thank goodness we'd ordered chips. Small portions are fine but rich sauces and a decent cooked meat must be observed, by the chef. Chocolate fondant cooked in a coffee cup. The only melt was the chocolate ice cream on top. No cream offered. Wine list was not good either. Shall not be booking any time soon, so disappointed.

I have been eating here for many years and always been pleased - till now. Reasonably tasty food but small portions and padded out with a lot of bread. Amouse bouche was carrot soup with a lot of bread. Starters included duck liver parfait with a lot of toast and a small fillet of charred mackerel. Mains were belly pork and plaice with some veg. Cheese as desert. Reasonably extensive wine list. It could be argued that £29.50 for 2 courses and £35 for 3 is not bad. On the other hand, I have had better food. Hopefully this is just a post 2nd lockdown blip.

Have eaten here before on several occasions. Always had amazing meal until last time we went just before lockdown. Went tonight as two couples hoping for good anniversary meals. Unfortunately not the best meal ever. The ham hock was severed on soggy bread rather than toasted foccasia. We ordered one small and one large chenin, both came same size. Vegetables with main course were tough and inedible. We nicely told waiter but really wasn't interested. Wouldn't have posted this if took feedback and was just an off night. Decided not to bother with sweets. Feel bad writing this in current times but have eaten at so many places trying so hard. Not great and charging upper end of local prices

After a long drive we saw the sign from the main road - glad we did. The staff were formal and taking good care of Covid restrictions, you do as you're told here - with good reason. The lunch was excellent, fine dining almost, and the draught beer good.Parking is easy...worth calling in.

My husband and I are here whilst staying at the nearby Argoed Barns. The staff were warm, welcoming and attentive. The menu is refreshingly simple, but the food is a far cry from your usual pub grub (in a good way!)Everything was cooked to perfection, and dietary requirements were well catered for.We would definitely eat here again when back in the Brecons.

One of our habitual favourite when we visit the Brecon Beacons. Excellent supper did not disappoint. We had sea bass delicate and delicious and the duck breast. Couldn’t resist dessert of autumn berry mess, coffee and chocolate parfait and the roasted plums all a hit. Also enjoyed the rhubarb G&T and the Sloe marguerita. Particularly special as we were unsure how the COVID restrictions would impact the experience but we felt both reassured by precautions taken and distances maintained but equally it did not over shadow our meal and make the whole thing weird. Thank you for an enjoyable evening out.

Went for lunch - having pre-booked. On arrival (having been told not to arrive more than 10 minutes before booked time) found (on going to the front door) that access was via the back door... would have been nice to have a sign to that effect in the carpark! Got in, washed hands, had temperature taken, sat down. Eventually got a menu which didn't differentiate between starters and mains; as it turned out, it didn't really matter as everything was in starter-sized proportions. Also expensive for what it was (Well over sixty quid for 1 starter, 2 mains, coffee (2) , wine (1 glass) and one non-alcoholic cider + chips). The chips at 4 quid a very small portion represented typical value for this establishment. We ordered cheese but it failed to turn up, We ordered the Becks Blue (advertised on a board!) but it was out of stock. All in all a very unsatisfactory dining experience which we won't be repeating.Apart from the tiny quantities the food was, at best, OK...at worst, tasteless...

We were already running several minutes late for our booking. The confining entry and exit door policy only accelerated this as we were denied entry upon two of the doors specifically titled ‘exit’. Clear COVID measures are firmly in place at The Griffin. Besides this, the food was lovely, albeit a slightly cold risotto but the tempura vegetables were exquisite. The staff were slightly unfriendly and inflexible regarding the menu. My grandmother wished to swap one of the ingredients for something else and was greeted with a cold front. The interior also deserves high praise with their intruding collection of art displayed round the walls. Some to buy and some not. Overall, I would return.

We have previously been big fans of the restaurant and have been here many times before. We had lunch in mid-August which was a huge disappointment and extremely overpriced. The food was tasteless, extremely bland and the portions tiny. We overheard another table next to us ask if the chef had recently changed so I think the feeling of disappointment was mutual. We would advise that the restaurant re-visit their service and food to bring it back up to their previous standards.

here with my husband to celebrate my birthday, we are the awkward brigade as I am vegetarian and he is coeliac. We both had plenty of choice on the menu, the pea and feta soup was clearly made with fresh peas, the flavour was deliciously intense. Our main courses of Risotto and fish mixed grill were also very good and the panacotta we finished with was also well made, with raspberry ice-cream.This is certainly a place to visit if you like an interesting wine list, and you can have a carafe in various sizes if you don't want a full bottle. We had a lovely table in the library by the window. Service was friendly, knowledgeable and well paced and the precautions they had put in place made us feel very safe. We thought the bill was quite modest for the quality of the food and drink. We will be back.

We booked a late lunch well in advance and arrived at 1.30 as planned. Our table was not ready which was not a good start. Once we sat down things came fairly fast and the young staff were keen and helpful. The Covid measures were being taken seriously. My wife had a starter portion of Aubergine with tempura courgett flower which she enjoyed. Our guest had the Seafood mixed grill which was first class. I rather missed out with cheese and onion quiche which was tiny. It was less than a quarter of a small quiche and I ate it in 3 or 4 forkfulls. It came with a few salad leaves as garnish - no more. The size was really disappoing for a main course - we are light eaters and do not expect large portions! Still hungry I ordered the Welsh Cheeses for £11 and had 3 small pieces of cheese and an assortment of biscuits with some plealsant chutney on the side. I rather expected celery or grapes or even walnuts with this - but the simple plate was again disappointing. Having said all that we had an enjoyable lunch - lifted by a slightly overpriced bottle of Sauvignon / Semillion at £26. They were remarkably busy for a Wednesday. Thanks to the Chancellor the bill came to £63 and we left £70 - when it would have been £100 without the current government subsidy. For £100 I would have expected rather slicker service and slightly more on my plate.

My wife ate here 2 years ago and raved about it, so it was a must to visit on this break. On tonight’s offering I am afraid we wont be back. The food was less than exciting and overly priced. The lamb was under cooked, the vegetables quite drab and the pork was small portioned and bland. The deserts faired a little better but failed to hit the mark with the exception of the chocolate fondant offering which my daughter loved. The lemon meringue was like a Greggs pastry (great at Greggs but not in a quality restaurant) spread with lemon curd. All in all I am sorry to say ours was a pretty poor dinning experience and terrible value for money even with the gov discount it was ridiculously priced for what we had.

We were staying nearby, so used TripAdvisor to find somewhere for lunch. Options were limited due to Covid-19, but this place appeared to be a good choice.Firstly I would congratulate the establishment on thier social distancing measures. We have eaten out a few times as things have been opened up and this was one of the better places we have visited in this regard. However, what was very disappointing, was the level of service we recieved. We were seated in The Tack Room and appeared to get forgotten. Not only did our lunch arrive before our drinks, but we then had to give up on any hope of desert or coffees as we waited 30+ minutes without receiving service. This wasn't due to a lack of staff, and our location meant we were being passed by regularly as it is the thorough fair to the kitchen. It was just impossible to get anyone's attention. We even had to get up twice to ask for our bill. The food was beautiful, so it is such a shame that I would not recommend someone visit based on our experience.

Six of us turned up for our first indoor meal of the year.Service and entry was fantastic, with all the efforts being made to make us feel safe, especially as four of us had self isolated until now.The downloading of the menus was great and easy.Once we had ordered, we waited in anticipation of great food, but we were very disappointed with the very small portions, although very tasty. One of our group, ordered a Ploughman’s, but this was the most disappointing with only one thin slice of bread, and a sliver of cheddar cheese, which was so thin that we thought it was butter, as there was just sufficient to spread over the thin only slice of Bread; definitely NOT a ‘Ploughman’s’. Overall the food was good, but not worth the money, even though we decided that it was a chance for the owners to start to claw back from the long lockdown. We will return in the future.
