This was my family Birthday meal. Staff were welcoming and smiley, but there needs to be a major improvement in the food. Starters are uninspiring: chicken goujons and ketchup ( this is children’s food), limp grilled halloumi with the dreaded balsamic drizzle. Fish pie was dry and the meat in was thin strips of beef with a too- sweet gravy and shortcrust pastry stretched across it. Roasted new potatoes were like little bullets (deep-fried, not roasted). I really don’t like complaining but the food needs sorting. Chunks of chicken/steak in a deeper pie dish with a puff pastry topping and a herby gravy would be a starting point……

We visited the Engineer for a family lunch during the August Bank Holiday weekend. We chose it because the menu caters for vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters - just what our family needs and because we've been in the (distant) past and the food was good. We sat outside and the seating was good, plenty of space and there was a high chair for the baby. We didn't use a pod but they looked very comfortable and were prettily decorated. The table service was fine, very helpful and friendly serving staff. The disappintment came with the food (all except for the nut roast which was plentiful and tasty). At an over-priced £12 per head, the bean burgers were disappointing. We were lured in by the menu description which made it sound interesting but when it arrived it was just a standard deep fried bean burger. Beans mashed together, covered in breadcrumbs (?possibly) and then fried. When I see burgers like this on a menu it makes me think that the chef just doesn't know how to make a vegetarian meal which is fresh, interesting and tasty. In this case, it was not helped by a serving of bland mayonnaise heavy coleslaw and luke warm thin chips. It would be great if places could realise that serving chips in a flower pot doesn't make them taste good and vegetarians do not need to have everything deep fried to make up for not having meat. The meat burger wasn't much better, good size but tasteless and a side salad which looked better than it turned out to be. The long wooden platters were very awkward to manage on the table (and how safe is it to use wood platters for cooked meat and non-meat items anyway?). I hope they are given a very hot, deep clean between customers. I didnt want to post a poor review because this pub is local to us and we know how hard it has been through the pandemic for local businesses to keep going. It is also evident that lots of effort has gone into making the pub's outdoor areas attractive and safe places to be. It just felt as though there was a complacency about the food that shouldnt go unmentioned. Certainly the high prices were not justified, covid or not. Maybe we just hit a bad day but we definitely won't be returning to eat until things have picked up again.

We visited at the beginning of August. We hired two pods and were escorted to them straight away where we ordered drinks. It went down hill after that. After taking out orders and after about half an hour, we were told that we could only have half our meals as the fryer had broken. Understandably this was not their fault, but I feel they shouldn’t have taken our order in the first place, or told us sooner. We had kids with us, and they were getting hungry as time went on. We settled on just having some of the starters that didn’t require a fryer. However when they came they were awful. Over cooked, dried up. etcTwo things:-1. At no time was there any apology - only a surly attitude from the waitress. No niceties at all, just rolling eyes and being made to feel like WE were a nuisance.2. The quality of the food was awful. Like I said, it was over cooked and dried out. They had a cheek to serve it. To be honest, I’m not sure there was even a chef at the restaurant that evening. It ruined the whole evening. This is such a shame. I have been frequenting this place for 20 years. The managers are all very friendly but they need to recognise that some of their staff need some lessons in customer service. We’ve had some lovely times and meals here over the years, but I’m afraid it’s become very hit and miss. A very disappointing evening on the whole.

We’ve been to the Engineer many times with no complaint but last night was awful. The staff were appalling! On arrival we were greeted by a man who struggled to even say hello! Ordering on the app due to covid so no staff interaction there, but when the food/drinks arrived the staff literally dumped them on the table - we didn’t even get given cutlery for our starters! Not once did anyone come to see if the food or we were ok. Overall it felt like a massive inconvenience for the staff to be at work extremely disappointing.

We were not happy with some of our food on the first visit but the team rectify it on your second visit and we were very impressed with customer service we received.I am glad i did speak to team about my issue rather than just write a review straight away.In these hard times we should always give a chance to pub/restaurant to rectify their mistake.Everyone does mistakes but its how we deal with them is the real challenge..All in all we definately will be back with some friends as their pods are lovely, food is simple but tastes great and drinks are reasonably priced for Harpenden !;)

We came here on the first day that pubs were allowed to re-open in England. Great to be back. The app that the pub encouraged customers to use worked quite well after having to go through the registration, and the drinks were delivered quickly. The food however was disappointing. Between the four of us, we had two portions of fish and chips, the fish pie and the panko chicken dish. The chips accompanying the fish & chips felt like they had been oven cooked. The portion size was also very small for the £13.50 price tag, and smaller than it was previously. The panko chicken dish was served with dry, over-cooked inedible rice and the fish stew was incredibly small and served with a measly slice of bread, which again did not warrant the price. Great for a drink and the kabanas look much warmer than the standard outdoor heating but the food represented poor value and was very basic.

So how good to see a great local pub that has really thought about making the new normal as close as possible to our old world. Social distancing is well managed; the booking in system is efficient; the payment app works really well and the staff are to the same high standard as ever. Well done all. Disappointing to hear an idiot complaining about the surcharge for app usage. Let's put this in perspective - £0.09p on a pint of Amstel! The app keeps the staff (and customers) safe, and the service is quick, friendly and efficient - as ever. Great effort all - well done - and both the food and atmosphere as good as ever.

A long wait for main courses....3 returned as they were cold. They were just microwaved but came back much warmer. Really spoiled the birthday celebration. 3 meals taken off the bill and a free bottle of wine, the waiter was not good and at one point when asked about the mains was heard to say to another colleague - the restaurant manager for the day -.their food is ready but I’m setting up this table! no surprise it was cold. We were served our Sunday roast st 16.10 despite being only one of two tables waiting for food. Food arrived after twice asking a waiter; lukewarm and swimming in a soup of tasteless gravy. I can only assume it had been waiting on the service counter a while as the gravy had completely soaked through the now soggy roast potatoes. My partners beef was over cooked and my lamb tough and with a “cooked in a microwave ‘ tang. Not once were we asked about our meals even when we asked for the bill and both had left the majority of our food ie: photo. I noticed several other tables had also left a lot of food swimming in gravy. £15 per head was a rip off. So we walked down and waited for a table to be free while talking to the staff. Once a table was free we went to order only to be told they sold out! Now, this was over a span of 30 minutes waiting while we talked to the staff who knew exactly what we wanted but decided not to tell us they were running low. Once we were told we, not the staff went to tell the other groups who waited for tables. It was well known that they all of us were waiting but nothing were communicated to us. What a waste of time!

Have been here a number of times in the past, but was very disappointed on our last visit. A burger in a bun with NOTHING else in it.... At all..... Hopefully they have a new chef by now as it's always been good before.

Brilliant service, food and hospitality. Nothing is too much trouble. Waiting staff are a credit to the Pub. Chef’s cooking is spot on.

We went for dinner and it was really lovely, the food was good, the staff friendly. We were sitting in the conservatory which was great as the bar was quite busy (Friday night of St. Patricks weekend!) but we were really comfortable there. There are lots of lovely outside spaces to sit as well and the gardens looked wonderful but it was a bit chilly for that. Will definitely go back when we are that way again in the warmer weather.

Beer is good - nice selection and well kept. The food, unfortunately, was poor. I had a burger which was literally just a burger patty in a bun - nothing else. No lettuce, no tomato, no onion, nothing. Considered sending it back for something else to put on it but it would have been a hassle and delay.

Went for dinner on the spare of the moment, booking a couple of hours ahead. Pub was lovely, fabulous garden, lovely bar area, great ales and drinks menu. Food was ok. Starters were great, fish fresh and delicious. Mains all disappointing. Fish (and chips) and tiny, dry piece of cod. Mac and cheese greasy and nothing special at all. Reasonably priced. Maybe better just for a drink rather than a meal.

Hired the conservatory last night for a private party and had great time. Lawrence, Tamsin and team looked after us all wonderfully, ensuring drinks always stocked up, nicely chilled and food arrived promptly. All our guests very complimentary about the Engineer. Wish it was my local pub! Might have to move to Southdown. All we had to do was turn up - The Engineer took care of everything. Cannot recommend highly enough.

I have eaten here several times before. We were unlucky that a group if 11 were due arrive on this occasion. The food took an hour to arrive and was mixed. Mac cheese was good but poor vegetables. The fish and chips were very nice and the other other vegetarian option ok. No apologies for delays, we nearly left.

Dined with three friends for Sunday lunch, service was very good, really pleasant waitress who knew her job. Food was perfectly acceptable for the price. I had lamb shank that was good, could have done with a bit more veg, one piece of broccoli, and spoon of carrots was a bit lean. This is the second time I have dined here and what is impressive is the staff that seem really well trained that is something that seems to be rare these days.

Very dry, my partner had what appeared to be a reheated burger and I had the lasagne which was equally as dry. Very surprised as I'd heard good things about the food. To top it all.......I found a white hair in my lasange. Perhaps avoid on a Wednesday.....

I had heard good reposrts of the Engineer and booked in to take my mother in law and her sister togetyher with my family. All had different starters and deep fried brie was good but chicken wings were too spicy for my daughter. Other items were ok but not outstandingMain course lamb shank and pork belly were both underwhelming and the signature burger was very bland ( literally being a burger in a bun with no trimmings ( although colesalwa was served on the side. Scampi was very tasty apparently. The server was very friendly and service was quick s i will try them again another time to see if it was an offf day.

The Engineer is one of my favourite pubs in Harpenden. Good selection of food. Friendly staff and a great outdoor area. Roll on summer.I visited with a couple of friends recently. The food was delicious. One of my friends had a chilli filled jacket potato, which she said was very tasty but the potato was tiny, probably just a one off glitch.

The Engineer has recently changed hands and it seems for the better. Some of the decoration and the toilets were in need of an overhaul which has been completed to a good standard. The menu has been updated and now offers very well priced, good portion food. What I like about the Engineer is that you can watch sports in one bar, or sit and relax in either the other bar and gardens, and eat a good meal in the conservatory.

Booked for an early Mother's Day meal as good menu choice (including something for those who are less adventurous, i.e. my mum!). Also required wheelchair access and staff were very helpful both over the phone and on the day.Good friendly service; a little wait before courses, but given the portions no bad thing and also an indication that food 'cooked to order' (as much as roasts can be, hopefully you know what I mean). First visit, but would go back.

Until a couple of months ago, there was nothing I liked better than to pop up to The Engineer with my son for an after work drink and a spot of food. Sadly the food has gone down hill lately. My visit before last night I ordered a lasagne which was dry and crusty, I sent it back and the very nice member of staff told me that it was the last of yesterdays!! which was why it was dry, but I could try the new batch which he had made that day. I went ahead and had this "fresh batch" but it was tasteless albeit looked a lot nicer than the previous dried portion. The guy who served us was lovely and did in fact refund me for my order. Understandably I was reluctant to go back for a few weeks but decided to go back last night as I do really like the pub. We ordered our drinks and food and my son joked that he did not imagine I would order the lasagne, He had the special New Yorker with sweet potato fries and I ordered the ham,egg and chips. I am sorry to say that mine was swimming in grease which had covered all of the ham and I left most of it and my son tried some of it just to confirm that it was not just me being fussy. His sweet potato fries were under cooked so all in all a very disappointing meal. I did not have the heart to tell your lovely bar man with glasses that we were very dissatisfied but he would of been aware as most of it went back. A real shame it has gone this way as previously I would of highly recommended The Engineer for food, sport and drinks.

A lot of places stop serving Sunday dinner before I finish work so I was delighted to discover The Engineer serve a great roast all day and into the evening. I was particularly impressed by the vegetables, which were delicious and included the elusive roast parsnips and leeks in creamy sauce.

We visit regularly on a round walk and sometimes have food which is always really nice but slightly pricey. The overall ambience is great and sports lovers are well catered for with plenty of screens in the sports bar. We had a family meal in the conservatory last Sunday and we all cleared our plates. There was a very long wait for the food because they were a chef down. However the waiting staff were so sweet and apologetic and looked after us well that it did not detract from our overall enjoyment.

We had an early Sturday dinner here. Very nice conservatory restaurant but I had to fight my way to the bar to find some service. A pleasant waiter but somewhere between him and the chef it all went wrong. We both asked for Sirloin Steaks well done. We were served and charged for Rib Eye steaks which were tough and still bleeding. Interesting because Rib Eye is not on the menu. So a stupid or dyslexic waiter and an arrogant chef who does not believe the customer knows what they want. I don't care what the chef thinks I just want him to do as I ask. The veg and chips were good so he obviously knows how to cook but has yet to learn the meaaning of Well Done. We will not return.

Our favourite pub in Harpenden. Always a warm welcome from Tracy, Michael, Caroline and the other bar staff. This visit was for Mother’s Day and the first time we had their Sunday roast and it definitely didn’t disappoint! Would also highly recommend the other food - especially Caroline’s amazing home made steak and ale pie! A lovely traditional pub with well kept beers and plenty of outdoor seating both front and back.
