The Dutchess in Powys

Came across this cafe and decided to go in as they were okay with dogs. First impressions were the decor wasn't my thing but that's just me... You might like it! The majority of the place looked clean, however there were a few points me and my partner noticed; the covers for the chairs were very dirty and it wasn't fresh dirt either. The salt, pepper and sugar pot on the table were visibly dirty so we weren't really comfortable using them tbh. I didn't find the place great value for money, it was overpriced for what it was but the breakfast was cooked well so I have no complaints on the food quality but it didn't fit the price. The drinks however were below par, almost £4 for a flat white and it was shocking; worst coffee I've ever had as it was pretty much all milk. Would I visit again if I was in Brecon? Probably not, and I'd probably be happier with popping in the coffee1 for a snack and save abit of money.

Delicious orange cake. The hot chocolate and milkshake need to come with a health warning, serious amounts of whipped cream - perfect for those with a sweet tooth! Loads of cake and drinks on offer too. Really worth a visit if you're in Brecon.

Very nice ambience, tastefully decorated and excellent, polite and well turned out staff. We had afternoon tea which was faultless, a great selection and plenty of fare. If you want to experience afternoon tea as it should be I wouldn't hesitate to visit this bistro restaurant. One thing I did appreciate is that fact that they allow well behaved dogs, they even provide bowls of water for them. Not cheap but worth the experience.

This is a lovely wee coffee shop. The décor is really nice and the tables laid with proper cloths. They were busy when we popped in but we managed to get a table. The service was ok, the staff were ok, the coffee was ok, but a smile could have gone a long way to make everything so much better. I know they were busy but hey, it's what they do. Being busy makes the till ring, so don't be dour, be happy.

Good food, good service, excellent decoration and dogs welcome inside and out. Catered for the dog first and then the humans.

Enjoyed a lovely meal at this very pretty restaurant. The cawl was delicious with plenty of lamb. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Well worth a visit. Look forward to a lovely day at Brecon soon and a dish of the lovely cawl.

I’ve been coming here since they opened in 2018, it’s always been a homely place for me, I had my baby shower there and have taken my little one there often, the staff have watched her grow up and have always been super friendly and so welcoming. We’ve been here for a catch up with friends, family meals, hungover Sunday breakfast. The food is absolutely amazing (big shout of to the Glamorgan veggie sausage toastie 1000/10) it’s a beautiful addition to our town and I would most definitely recommend if you’re visiting Brecon. Delicious breakfast this morning, great options for meat/vegetarian/vegans. Like sitting in a summer garden party - lovely cafe! Fast, friendly and efficient service, we’ll definitely return. Takeaway drinks available too.

We stopped in while on a work trip in the area today, we hadn’t booked but The Dutchess staff didn’t blink an eye and soon moved a couple of tables to accommodate our party of seven - there are not many places that that would happen these days. The menu is fairly small but plenty to choose from and whilst there was a little bit of a wait for food it was clear that everything was freshly cooked to order and worth waiting for. My chai latte was probably the best I have ever had. The food was very reasonably priced and we all left feeling grateful that our initial plans of somewhere to eat had fallen through. The cafe was busy, the staff were really friendly. I saw another table who looked to be having an afternoon tea which also looked very tasty. Well done to The Dutchess, the only downside is it is so far from my home 😂

Wife had poached eggs on toast and I had the full welsh with locally sourced bacon and sausage, egg, hash brown, mushrooms, beans and toast. Cooked fresh to order and served with a smile on a warm plate.

My wife and I went for breakfast. Could not fault the quality of the breakfast apart from the fact that everything was cold because it was served on a stone cold plate. Tea was served in a very fancy teapot which poured tea all over the table ! It was not our fault as the two ladies on the next table had the same problem.

We stopped in Brecon on our journey back from visiting family on bank holiday Monday. We were beginning to worry that we wouldn't find anything decent to eat but then we found the duchess. Their homemade rose lemonade was very refreshing with a lovely sweet and sherbet flavour, it reminded us of rose Turkish delight. I had the lamb kofta with mint yoghurt, which they were happy to serve with salad and fries instead of the pitta as I don't eat bread. The flavours were perfect and the salad was fresh and tasty. My husband had a very good burger with rarebit, in tomato fondue, gherkin, American mustard with fries, salad and coleslaw. He was very pleased with his meal. There was a bit of a wait because of the large number of people eating but this was not a problem as we were informed of the slight wait when we ordered and the food and the service was impeccable. All of the waiting staff were polite, friendly and efficient, and went out of their way to accommodate us. We will most definitely visit again next time we are in the area.

This place has the catch of the market, which is possibly why it was so busy. Thought of eating here, but after visiting the toilet which gives you sight of the kitchen, I decided to eat elsewhere. It was just lunchtime, the floor in the kitchen was filthy, there was food laying there on the floor, discarded napkins, other bits under the cabinets - just generally dirty. The working area looked a complete shambles. I will not be heading here again, not even for a can if drink.
