The Duke William in Bassetlaw

Went here for a birthday lunch, a good selection of drinks were offered on arrival , along with the food menu, an excellent choice of menu, and also a good children’s menu is offered, two of us ordered fish sea bream the other salmon all beautifully cooked one had a vegetarian dish and another member had the steak pie, all the meals were of generous portions. Definitely worth a visit, it was our first but won’t be our last.

Immediately on the defensive when I asked about the hand pulls on offer and was told they had Pheasantry ales which are poor at best. We ordered a Moretti and a glass of Sauvignon blanc which were good. We then ordered battered prawns and the scallops with cauliflower pakoras. These were big dishes and quite nice but at well over a tenner each they really need to be. Mains were pie, mash and mushy peas and fish, skinny chips and mushy peas. These by comparison to the starters were disappointing and very overpriced for the quality of dish. The pie had hard pastry and was rated as not as good as one at the Elms which is half the price. The fish was ok but a bit thin and dry. Better can be had at the nearby Bees Knees Another round and the bill came to an astonishing £80. Half that would have been closer the mark for the quality of food and the atmosphere in the pub Please note that the staff were lovely shame about the food

Haven't been here for years so decided tonight to go for a meal. The food was excellent. I had Gammon and eggs and my friend had the burger. They were both good portion sizes and very tasty. I must praise Josh who served us both. His customer service is excellent. Nothing was too much trouble for him. He is very polite and and efficient.

Lovely little pub with friendly staff. We both had the pie of the day (steak and ale) with chips instead of mash which was really nice. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Been there many times for Sunday lunch and always enjoyed what we ordered. Quite disappointed on our last visit. The vegetables were very much under cooked, the beef was cut wafer thin and the portions were very mean. We will certainly think twice before visiting again !!

This is a great place for lunch, four of us spent the afternoon eating fresh and tasty food in a warm relaxing restaurant. The home made steak pies were excellent, probably best I've ever eaten! Service was good and the price very reasonable. We will book again in the future.

As always simply stunning the Smoked Haddock Risotto was as sheer delight and the Pheasant Breast was totally wonderful. My favourite gastro pub and the service, food and whole experience next fails to deliver. Simply wonderful couldn’t ask for more.

We had a had a wonderful family meal at the Duke William pub in Askham. The staff were very friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was cosy and inviting. The food was delicious - especially the lasagne and chips, which was a lovely comfort meal. The meat pie was enormous and homemade, with a rich gravy. The fish and chips was brilliant and fresh, with a crispy batter and tender fish. The Duke is a great place to visit for a relaxing and enjoyable meal. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves traditional pub food done perfectly and a warm welcome.

A beautiful small georgian pub and resteraunt an a lively quiet village, the food was absalutely exeptional, we both had sea Bream which came cooked to perfection crisp skin and succulent fillets asparagus and creamed leeks with a lovely pommes dauphinois the wine list was good and varied and the chablis advertised would have been perfection but the rioja was so good we had to break with tradition a lovely 2018 vintage the service from the staff was wonderful attentive and nothing was too much trouble well worth a visit but book, a table as due to tge quality of the food its virtually always booked up cant wait to come again,

Continues to offer exceptional customer service & food! Great variety on the menu and it's a real delight to visit (greeted like old friends once staff get to know you) Our little doggy always receives a very warm welcome too.

We were only staying in this area for a few nights but this was recommended to us. Staff were most helpful and everything was comfortable and good pub food was served. Our food was all very tasty - soup/vegetable lasagne was very nice. Good selections available.

We headed over on a Monday evening to check the pub out for a large Christmas Day meal and decided to eat. Even tho we hadn’t booked, we were found a space for a bite to eat. There was only one waitress for the whole pub (she apologised and explained that they hadn’t expected a busy mon eve). Service was amazing - we didn’t have to wait and the lady serving was fab. Food was IMMENSE! Great portions - my SIL has mussels and chips & I had a Camembert& breads selection - worth every penny. Decor is a beautiful quaint pub that’s cosy - can’t wait to visit in the winter! Can’t wait to visit again.

After reading the reviews we were looking forward to eating here. However the welcome we received made us all feel a little uncomfortable. The lady with the glasses? I don’t know if she was having a bad day but my daughter actually said: she’s not very nice. The food was fantastic but we wouldn’t return to be treated like that. Just had our second takeaway from the new owners of the Duke William (Kevin & Bryony) Absolutely exceptional food! We’ve tried the ham hock fritters, arancini, game pie, pasta pappardelle, piri piri chicken and the duke burger....all really really tasty!!

I’ve had Sunday roast take aways several times during lockdown. They are delicious. Everything is so fresh. Perfectly cooked. If we want to ensure we have a pub in Askham we should use it as often as possible. Mid week meals are also great. I love the fish n chips.

Without a showdown of doubt, the best meal we’ve had in a long, long time.Felt very safe and each table, chair, table condiment was wiped down after use.On top of that the food was amazing, all cooked from scratch by a top chef.We will be dining here again this week.Today we had a beef Sunday dinner and a vegetable pie followed by chocolate fondant and a strawberry cheesecake, just delicious! Give it a try as you will not be disappointed.

Booked and met a friend for lunch, as a half way point between our homes. Really lovely staff and good. Just off the A1 so easy to fund too.

We came for lunch to break up a long drive and it was a great choice. They have good COVID measured in place. The food was good. I had a delicious burger and my husband had the fish pie. They had some very fancy high chairs which were great for our 6 month old. The menu selection was good with Sunday roast options in addition.

Lovely village inn with local ales and ciders. Food is fantastic especially the Sunday roast. Check opening times as it is not open all the time. Adhered to all restrictions regarding Covid 19.

Dropped in to this lovely village pub for a quick bite. They had a special deal on burgers for a 'Thursday Burger Special' All I can say this buttermilk chicken burger was 10/10. High recommend you visit this beautiful pub if in the area. Thanks guys for another great lunch.

We love making the drive to the Duke William. We enjoy eating in the bar area because it’s dog friendly. We haven’t had a bad meal yet and always feel very welcome when we come in. The food is excellent as well as the service.

Been here quite a bit since Glenn and Craig took over and can honestly say have never had any faults with any of the food. Always perfect grub at good prices, can’t recommend it enough.

Another excellent meal at the Duke William this weekend. Friday's their busiest night, so best to book if you want to ensure a table. Log fires were blazing, service was perfect, and most importantly the food was spot on. The cosiest country pub for miles.

We visited here as it was in walking distance of our accommodation. We prebooked for Valentines evening as this is generally a busy time. As it was Valentines they had a special menu at a set price of £35 a person. We shared a Camembert starter then enjoyed a steak and lamb shank. Our only criticism was that the main came out very quickly after the starter! We waited a while after our main but couldn’t manage a pudding. The food was so delicious that we revisited on Sunday for a roast. With a choice of turkey or beef (or a slice of both) we both opted for beef- wow! We are thinking about coming back to stay here just so we can visit the pub for some more amazing food.It’s warm, cosy, inviting and friendly- a traditional English pub. Thank you Glen and the team!

Friendly welcome, pleasant surroundings, interesting menu. I’m a vegetarian and loved the Brie, cranberry and hazelnut wellington. My friend’s chips were the best I’ve ever tasted. Definitely will be going back. It’s lovely.

My father took us all for a meal at the Duke William including our dog the fire was a blaze and we were all made to feel welcome and relaxed the menu was really good especially as I am vegetarian and dairy allergic the staff were so kind and helpful and the food was superb and well presented and the prices good the surroundings comfortable and relaxed would recommend it to anyone

Met friends recently at Duke William. Such a cosy atmosphere. We chose from the Christmas Menu and were not disappointed. My friends and I all agreed, each course was absolutely delicious! We shall return.

My partner and I stopped off for an evening meal without a reservation on a Thursday night. Not too busy, roaring log fires and excellent food. We had the steak pie and fish and chips, both hearty, faultless and very good value. Lovely atmosphere and very friendly. We will definitely be back soon.

Eaten here a fair few times over the last few months and cannot think of anything to complain about. Menu variety fabulous, food extremely fresh, hot and very tasty. Went today for Sunday lunch with family everybody commented how tasty the perfectly cooked vegetables were and both the roast lamb and beef were divine. Not the cheapest place for Sunday lunch around here but definitely worth every penny.Well done to the team for providing exceptionally great food, hospitality and service.We will definitely be back as will our family and friends too.

After a trying week my wife and I fancied a change. Rang around a couple of places but they were busy. I then remembered this place, a local had recommended it a short while ago so I gave them a ring they were busy too but we thought let's go for it. Have to be honest an say I am glad we did it was superb, the belly pork was beyond expectations and all I can say is that we will wonder that way again and it will be soon. Very impressed.

A large gathering catered for in their lovely back dining room. Perfect for a family get together. Everyone enjoyed their food which came out without delay. Desserts were well received - particularly the panacotta. Only one draught bitter on, but it was nice enough. The new management have this place running like a well oiled machine. A visit with friends on a busy but atmospheric Friday night. Glens the new perfect host - friendly and attentive. Kitchen was faultless. Some excellent fresh specials and plenty of English pub classics on the menu. Prices on the upper end, but everything felt worth it. Let's hope they get the local support back after the recent chequered history - this reboot deserves it.

We visited The Duke William after trying to find somewhere closer to Retford. This was worth the short drive. The food was really good and the team couldn't do enough for us - even asking which shape pasta we would prefer!

We stopped by on a Saturday lunchtime after reading some very positive online reviews. We had also visited the pub previously for a drink under the previous owners. We knew the pub to be warm and friendly as well as being beautifully decorated. We certainly weren't disappointed - the pub has been wonderfully maintained and we were made to feel incredibly welcome by the new owners. We were the only people in the pub to start with, but we soon saw a steady stream of locals popping by to have a drink or book their table for the evening. Dogs were also made to feel at home in this rural setting.

I've done a few reviews for The Duke, as it's changed hands fairly frequently for a couple of years. I recommend people to visit NOW!

Delicious! Genuinely good italian food that is hard to find in the area! Portions are generous though a tad pricey.

What a lovely surprise to find The Duke William has gone Mediterranean Beautiful food, lovely surroundings and not at a price that blows the budget. We will most certainly be back. Only missing out on 5 star rating for us as the coffee could be improved by a genuine Italian strength blend ☕️

After visiting this pub occasionally over the last 15 years in its various forms, what a lovely surprise last night. New owners offering interesting Italian/ British food which was superb.

The food is a mix of Italian and English and is amazing. It’s great to have something a bit different. The new owners are so lovely. They make you feel like family and really look after you. Go there, you won’t be disappointed.

My family had lunch here today. The new owners were so lovely and spent time chatting with us throughout the meal. One of us is celiac and it wasn’t an issue. The menu is rustic Italian and is delicious. We had starters, mains and desserts and couldn’t fault the food. We left with very full tummies and felt so welcomed. A fantastic start for the new owners with it only opening 3 weeks ago.

The Duke William is under new ownership. A lovely couple of Italian descent who both spent time chatting to us. We ate in the front bar area by a roaring fire so very cosy. The food is british/ Italian and between the five of us we tried food across the menu and it was all excellent.

Nice pub but tiny meal. Sadly we will not be back.Starter ok but pestered by begging dog till owner finally called it over.Main course was enough if you are a child. We had consumed it within two mins.Crushed potatoes two max and hard.Samphire which I love barely evident.The waiter asked if we had room for desert? Yes yes yes !!!

Very impressed with The Duke William. Friendly welcome and a lovely roaring fire greeted us on a cold Sunday. We had plenty of time to relish the contents of the menu and didn't have long to wait for our starters: cheese souffle and scallops. Absolutely delicious. Mains were typical Sunday roast but very tasty and plentiful. We managed to squeeze a dessert in; treacle sponge and cheesecake. All in all this was a fab lunch, served very professionally - service with a smile. Great. Highly recommended.

Fantastic Sunday lunch. In our view, it has the edge on much of the competition in the area. Food is well cooked, well presented with starters and desserts a on the creative side with fantastic flavour. Can't wait to eat more of this chef's food. Five friends and I went to the Duke on Friday night and I have to say the food was excellent. The cheese bon bon starter was superb, the steak that followed was cooked to perfection and the cheese platter was very varied and full of flavour including a black cheddar.

Made the journey from Stamford to The Duke William to meet up with family over lunch. Was extremely happy we picked this pub to meet as the food was excellent and the welcome and service was first class. Also had excellent real ale!

We had an appointment late afternoon in Retford and fancied eating before that time at a decent place. As we would be passing Tuxford, discovered The Duke William at Askham almost on the way.

First visit here and will definitely return. The staff were warm, welcoming and helpful. Lots of lovely choices on the menu and specials of the day too. I don't usually manage 3 courses but couldn't resist! Only one down to it...the chairs where we were seated left me with a 'numb bum' as they were so uncomfortable
