I had a duck dish which was good but not cheap. It's insulting to then add another £3.50 for rice making it unusually expensive. Staff were helpful and service was good.

Visited on 19th April for lunch with my husband and 6 year old son. We had the set lunch menu and my son had soup. There was no children's menu but that was not a problem. Restaurant was nice inside and the tables are not all pushed in together. My husband and I both had veg spring rolls to start and chicken and black bean sauce with fried rice. The food was lovely and portion sizes were fine. I did ask for prawn crackers but never received them - looking round the restaurant I never seen anyone else with them so ask me that they do not sell them. The really big downside and the reason I have marked this place as average was due to the price of the drinks. My husband and I had a can of coke each and my son had a glass of diluting blackcurrant juice which came to the shocking price of £8.40!!!!!! I feel that this lets the place down and would make me think twice about going back.

The lunch menu is good value and I do wish we had opted for it but we decided to go a la carte. The food was tasty, although our dishes, both very different looked exactly the same. Perhaps a base sauce uses for all? My Szechuan duck was barely spicy, and had 5 slices of fatty duck. The rice was cold. My fiancé had a fried chicken with ginger. The chicken looked like a chickens knees! All bone and no meat! We will not be returning. A shame for a restaurant that has previously had a great reputation

Disgusted by the customer service.

We went to St. Andrews with our lovely baby , baby's grandpa and auntie for a nice weekend. Everyone we encountered in St. Andrews were so nice except one of the waitress of this restaurant. So our 5-months old son is always gentle and happy, never really scream or cry loud in public. But the short-haired waitress felt annoyed/upset right away when we get in the restaurant and ask for a table, obviously they don't welcome groups with baby/kids. So after we ordered food i was looking at the photos we took today and didn't realise that i need to give back the menu to the waitress. The waitress threw me a terrible and rude eyesight/facial expression when she asked for the menu even i said Sorry. Well..... seems i am one of her hated colleagues/classmates/enemy... i won't expect any friendly or smile but definitely not such eyesight and facial expressions. but the other 2 younger staff are very nice.Anyhow , the dishes were unexpectedly good, probably better than many Chinese restaurants in Edinburgh or even Scotland. Probably they hire an excellent chef but without good training of the waitress (hopefully she is not the owner, just a waitress with a bad day or under pressured from her boss). Although the dishes are excellent, the price is definitely overpriced for such a small portions of food and bad service. Could be a great Chinese restaurant for couples, students and friends but definitely not for baby/kids.

Having eaten at the Dining Room, probably two out of every three weeks over the last couple of years (while in the UK), I have given some excellent reviews on Trip Advisor. However, over the last few weeks, sadly the place has gone downhill. My wife's soup (vegetarian) has become watery, and the service, whist still friendly, in the main, has become inept. We just feel utterly frustrated that a restaurant that we have loved (and given a hugh amount of business to - we always order of the 'al la carte' menu at lunchtime rather than the 'lunch menu') just doesn't seem to value us anymore. We will be eating elsewhere for a time.Something as simple as being given prawn crackers doesn't happen anymore, even after making it clear to the waiter that we wanted them. We understand that these are generally not included at lunchtime, but given that we have visited three out of every four weeks, or so, for such a long time, and have always eaten 'a la carte', surely it is not too much to expect?Apart from my wife's watery soup, the meals remain good, but we just feel that there are now vfm questions and, more particularly, that our business is not appreciated.Sad.

I had given a fairly mediocre review previously to this restaurant but being ever the optimists decided to try again. On the previous occasion there seemed to be some kind of staffing problems so we thought we d give it another chance. Ordered two diet cokes. It was the same colour as diet coke but that's where any resemblance ended. It was flat, sweet and unpleasant. The main courses were fairly pricey - I decided to order chicken skewer satay on a cast iron plate. It was £13.50. I was asked if I wanted boiled rice, fried rice or noodles with it so asked for boiled rice. My companion had beef in a spicy sauce with cashew nuts. He requested fried rice. The food was ok. The 3 small chicken skewers came with a small dish of onion, mushroom and peppers and the satay sauce came in a separate jug. Nothing special but all right. Certainly not worth £13.50. When we paid the bill we found out that the rice is extra. £3.50 extra. Would anyone have a chinese meal without rice or noodles if not on a special diet? I don't think so. £17 for a fairly unremarkable meal. I feel conned to be honest. We won't be back

This is a pleasantly decorated but small restaurant. We were with friends and the waitress service to begin with was very prompt with the drinks. The menu is quite extensive and a main on this will be around £12 ( not even sure if that included rice ), which is a bit on the dear side. Starters are around the £6 mark. The food however, was very good. Ordered tea and coffees and two arrived minus spoons and sugar which were brought once asked for. The other two coffees did not appear due to coffee maker problems. As we had waited some time for them we cancelled them.To be fair, the cost of our drinks was removed from the bill as we had such a long wait. The table was cleared of finished dishes before all had finished eating, which really annoys me.The toilets are up a flight of dimly lit stairs and not sure if there were any on the ground floor for those with limited mobility. Although the food was good, it's a bit overpriced and there are plenty of other eating options locally available.

I recently went with my mother and 2 children to The Dining Room on a quiet weekday for lunch. We arrived just after 12noon and were seated and given menus.......then nothing. We were the only diners in the restaurant and there was 1 member of staff on the floor who had made a call to what seemed to be an electricity provider. We decided on our order and waited and waited and waited. By now, over 20 minutes after we were seated, my children were starving and our waiter was still on the phone. I took my children round to see the fish infront of the bar/till area in the hopes that it would remind the gentleman that he had customers in the restaurant........not even a nod of acknowledgement. We decided to leave and will not be back. Not how you deal with enquiries when you're trying to run a business! If you're anticipating delays then why not estimate a later delivery time? Had it not been prepaid on the app I would have told them to take it back!! Food was freezing cold by time it got here and tasted like something my dog would refuse. After waiting for just over ten minutes I called at 18.43 to ask where the driver was. He told me he had been waiting for 15 minutes, which does not make sense considering I was told he was 5 minutes away running late at 18.31. He told me he would not come back and claimed to have phoned me '9 times'. We then had to drive in to the dining room, despite paying for delivery service. I then showed my phone to a lady and explained the issue and the fact I had not received any of these apparent phone calls. The lady said she could only apologise and gave me 2 pounds back out of the 3.50 delivery charge however she did not go into great detail or seem that bothered that it was their fault. She simply asked me whether it was Fife Park delivery which is was not - as I was waiting in the DRA reception. Overall I thought the service was really poor. In theory the customer should always be right and I feel there was a lack of understanding and sympathy as I had done nothing wrong and then had to come all the way into town to collect my takeaway, I feel very let down by the lack of customer care and service.

If you're hungry don't order from here, this place has truly gone downhill. Made an order at 19:22 it finally arrived at 20:40 after I had called twice in between asking about my order (and being told it has left even though I don't live far away from the place). Long story short I didn't accept the delivery and sent them back with the food. If you know the order will take time tell people. Waste of energy and not worth the hassle

Ordered on a Saturday night at 17:15, as told there would be an hour wait(!) - a pretty long wait for a takeaway, especially as I was ordering early. My takeaway eventually arrived...TWO HOURS later! I called, and called the restaurant to find the whereabouts of my food - only for me call to be picked up on the ninth ring, and to be told it was on its way. The food was average and overpriced - would have been cheaper, quicker and less hassle to go get the chinese food from a supermarket.

Very disappointed with the poor and inflexible service from the owner. Staff tries to be helpful but the owner twice blocked their attempts of providing a service that is commonplace in other restaurants. We ended up having to leave the restaurant after using over 10-15 minutes to book a meal due to internal wrangling between the staff over our order.

3½ hours for a delivery THREE & A HALF HOURS!!! They were contacted at lunch time to ensure delivery to our holiday home. Guaranteed delivery was possible based on address including post code. The delivery driver took over 90 mins to locate our very well sign posted accommodation. The food was so cold - not surprising - and every single dish needed to be reheated. We refused to pay the full price and this resulted in a heated argument with the delivery driver add he wanted to take all the food away and bin it leaving us with nothing. Customer service appalling. Would NEVER EVER use again.

There I was following another .1 addition to the already cricket score of a handicap wondering where I could eat following 18 holes at St. Andrews. There were twelve of us craving some local cuisine, unfortunately all the locally ethically sourced eateries were booked up. Following on from some local advise we stumbled upon the dining room, unfortunately things may have been lost in translation. Following a short phone call, the table was booked, bingo. Upon arrival at the restaurant we were pleasantly surprised to find that there was a 10 % discount advertised, with no apparent terms and conditions attached. It was a good job that we booked in advance, apart from an amorous couple in one corner looking longingly into each other's eyes and a fortune cookie about to decide their future, we were the only party in the restaurant. It was fortunate that 12 was easily divisible by six as we snugly reclined onto our pre-allocated furniture. A Bonnie-wee lass (I apologise for the local lingo) took our order, following confirmation of the discount advertised. Ordering was slow from some members of the party, leaving other mildly frustrated, however, the young scholar remained unperturbed. Following intense discussions and debates, 12 set menus were agreed upon with a majority decision. To begin with, duck pancakes were on the cards. At this stage, the young student was off to sample the local nightlife leaving the management team to fill in. Beers were flowing, duck was a plentiful, pancakes numbers were limited. A brief discussion with the management team perplexingly revealed that 4 extra pancakes would be an extra expenditure. This was not budgeted for. Baring in mind the 9:3 split of Yorkshire:Manchester proportion of the group, this was not readily dismissed. At this point, it may be worth noting that the bubbly ambiance of the student waitress was certainly not infectious. The management team were hardly endearing to the notoriously friendly northern english contingent. The mains followed, these were good. The rice and beer was plentiful and complimented the size of the mains perfectly. It was time to go and sample the delicacies that St. Andrews had to offer..."Please sir, may we request the bill?""...." Inaudible, grunt"Is the 10 % discount included ?""Yes, there is a 10 % obligatory service charge"... There was a deadly silence amongst the group, this was not advertised. As a group of professionals, we very much work on the premise of, if it's not written down, it didn't happen. As generous tippers at the worst of times, this left the group flabbergasted. The Yorkshire contingent were having palpitations by this point. This dampened the party atmosphere somewhat. The bill was paid following on from a whip round with the more elderly members attempting to pay by penny farthings ( please note this was not accepted). In conclusion, good food, poor service following the early depart of the eye candy and more hidden charges than a wonga loan.

Visited with a party of golf friends, a total of 13 in all and booked in advance. Place was good with light coloured decor, nice furniture and clean premises. There were only about 6 other people in the restaurant and most of them were near the end of their meal. The food was slow coming but tasted good. The biggest shock was when the manager said we would need to pay extra for pancakes to finish off the crispy duck. We refused and said with so many people and drinking so much beer, seriously overpriced at £3,20 for a small bottle of beer or lager, and the manager served more free of charge. The main courses were slow coming and quite tasty but very spicy for my crispy chicken and other dinners also left about half the same food on our table. The menu offered set meals but when our gateau was due the manager said they didn't have any. When we got the bill the manager had put a surcharge if 10% on because we filled a room. They seated us and we did not ask for anywhere special and we were split up into two tables so there was no special treatment. The menu or waitress did not mention any surcharges.None of us would recommend it and it s certainly off our list for our visit next November.

We were visiting St Andrews for the first time and had read no reviews about eating places so just chose where we ate randomly. We saw the Dining room early in the day, looked through the window and at the menu and decided to visit in the evening.Everything was excellent. Two very polite and friendly staff were on duty and were very attentive but not overly so. The service was perfect, the food was the very best Chinese food we have ever eaten and although a little pricey it was excellent value because of the quality and standards. Would definitely recommend and will definitely go again when we visit St Andrews.

Food was OK, ordered chicken chow mein was a tad bit oily but overall it was fine. Felt bad for the delivery driver as the restaurant never gave her the correct contact number to find my address which left her driving around for over an hour searching for my house. I phoned the restaurant and they confirmed the food was out and the driver had the correct number that I enclosed. One hour later the driver stumbled upon my house. If you have any specific requests definitely ensure you follow up on them.

Booked for 4 on Monday night, busy as you walked in and we were shown to a table, drinks order taken and we were given menu's - all good. We were eating with our kids, 13 and 10, so the variety of menu was good to see.It soon became apparent that the waiter on duty was the only waiter on duty ( it transpired the other never showed up) anyway, he was brilliant, literally running from table to table, drinks then food, then someone's bill, then drinks, more food etc etc you get the picture. Our food was excellent, couldn't fault it nor the service from this one man waiting machine. However, our experience was soured by the family of 8 who arrived and made that poor waiters life harder than it need be. He apologised for the delay with their order and the man replied are you really sorry , really sorry? It was degrading and just plain rude the way they spoke to him. That aside, it was a place I would recommend, its not fancy but the food was good.

Third visit to the dining room as have always enjoyed their food. If were to ignore the chipped started plates, the forgetful waiter and the overcharged aromatic duck, it was an amazing meal. Food was lovely as usual, waiter was a bit ditzy but very friendly and polite and when we pointed out the error with the bill it was rectified immediately. It's certainly not up to the same standards as it was a couple of years ago but I will be back as its still the best Chinese restaurant in town.

We were unsure about eating here based on other trip advisor reviews. That said we have used the dining room for carry out on previous trips to st andrews and found the food to be good. Eating in this time did not disappoint, with great selection/menu offering the expected staples plus some exciting specials. As a party of five our waiter actually kept us right from ordering too much! Quality was very good, particularly recommend the prawn dumplings. Only downside, no draught beers.

Went a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night to order a takeaway before 9.00pm. We waited for about 5 minutes to be served while the "manager" (as he told us) was on the phone listening to someone complaining! When he eventually came off the phone he told me they weren't serving anymore!! There was a pile of orders on the counter and some waiting to be picked up. We even saw one of the orders being dropped on the floor!! Total shambles!!!!

We have recently moved to the area and have been looking for a good Chinese takeaway. Having read reviews, we thought we might have found one so placed an order. Really disappointed. My starter of Sui Mai was awful. Obviously old and reheated, I had one and left the rest as they were inedible. Moving to our mains. Eventhough my wife and I had two completely separate chicken dishes, they were both equally terrible. Both bland with absolutely no taste, chicken was over cooked and old, rice luke warm. Overall, both very poor meals. The search for a good Chinese in Dunfermline goes on...
