New owners, new look for The Dining Room and new menu and I have to say all were fabulous. The Dining Room looks amazing like it is part of 78 Derngate and the food was delicious, we shall be going back to try some more.

My family celebrated my Mums 80th birthday here today. It’s my favourite place in Northampton for afternoon tea and extremely good value. The food is excellent and there’s always some left over to take home. As a vegan the selection of sandwiches, pastries and cakes offered are amazing & everyone else really enjoyed there’s too. Rachael always answered my emails promptly when organising the booking. I highly recommend a visit.

Down side is the room is looking very tired shame when they spent all that money on the building extension they didn’t referb the tea room really let’s it down and spoils what otherwise would be a lovely afternoon tea

We were given a lovely table in the window for our Afternoon Tea voucher booking overlooking the garden and park opposite. The waitress was very nice and was on hand throughout our visit to top up the bottomless Tea and check we were happy with the food. The first tier arrived comprising of small sandwiches, cheese scones and mini quiche. The bitesize sandwiches were a little disappointing and could do with being of a more standard size. The second tier arrived and was more impressive with two large plain scones, clotted cream (Cornish potted version) and a huge serving of strawberry jam. Accompanying the scones was a selection of lovely fresh cakes and tarts which made up for the sandwiches previously. Having not been here for a number of years it was a nice to visit again and was topped off with a cold glass of prosecco we hadn't realised was included with our voucher.

We both thoroughly enjoyed the food, friendliness and excellent service in the Dining Room. The sandwiches, pastries, scones and cakes were all delicious. I will definitely go again soon. The tea was nice and consistently refilled and all for the one price. Definitely worth a visit, but allow at least and hour and a half as there is so much food you may struggle to eat it all. You get two food deliveries, savoury and sweet. We were there for 2 hours and took some lovely food home with us. A lovely location to catch up with old friends. Give them a try and I don’t think you will be disappointed.

The dining room felt like a disused back room in someone's house; clean enough but not particularly inviting. The service was ok; the waitress was pleasant but we had to ask for extra drinks rather than being offered. Sandwiches were removed to make way for the deserts and we assumed they'd be boxed up but unfortunately not. Remaining cakes we had to ask for them to be boxed up. The food was rather average; sandwiches and scones were nice (these were served warm and were very fresh) but the 'deserts' appeared to be defrosted (or had spent some time in the fridge getting a little soggy), clotted cream served in fridge packs, jam in a ramekin with no serving spoon, strange pink faircakes that would really only appeal to children. It's almost there but it's not quite hitting the mark.

We visited yesterday after a visit to 78 Derngate - lovely way to end our 'tour' - we ate lunch in the Dining Room - excellent food and lovely service. Food quality was exceptional. My only comment is the Menu choices were not the same as on the website so hubby was a bit disappointed as he'd set his sights on the gammon ham! However a Peroni beer soon took care of him! Two of us had coronation chicken sandwich in malted bloomer; one had a BLT and the other a smoked salmon salad with mini roasted new potatoes. Very tasty side of homemade 'chips' that were in fact potato slices with the skin on.

After being let down at the very last minute by another Northampton establishment we rang the Dining Room to see if they could accommodate us for a 40th Birthday afternoon tea. We arrived less than ten minutes later and were absolutely delighted to find our table decorated for the occasion with a banner and table confetti. The food was absolutely outstanding, A good selection of pillow soft sandwiches, the most amazing warm savoury scones with cheese and chutney, quiches and other savouries were just for starters. Next followed the most incredible array of cakes, macarons and warm fluffy scones with clotted cream. Gorgeous crockery, and a plentiful supply of tea, things could not have been any better or so we thought.......the staff then bought in a 40th birthday decorated brownie complete with candle and sang to the birthday girl. Service was attentive without being overbearing, what a brilliant afternoon. Thank you guys you made our day.

I want to give the best review but also I have to be honest . The staff were lovely , we were served very quickly we had big pots of tea , couldn't fault the sandwiches they were lovely the garnish was slightly wilted . The cakes and Scones were lovely I have been to quite a few afternoon teas in London but the cakes here were better . The cake on the top tier was gorgeous it was like eating a Rolo . This is the bit I have to say what I was thinking , the mirror in the corner was very dusty and the windows had finger marks on . As the room is small I think these little things make all the difference. Everything else was Excellent . I couldn't mark you down for such small things that not everyone would notice .

This little hidden gem is an absolutely beautiful provider of some of the best afternoon tea I have ever had. The décor was charming and the old style music really transported us back to a simpler time of classic luxury. Staff were exceedingly charming and well mannered, offering both sweet and savoury slices of delicate and tasty cuisine. The savoury sandwiches, along with delicious quiche as well as cheese and chutney scones set the bar for an incredible experience. To follow, the sweet cakes and traditional scones were incredible and had me and my girlfriend smiling widely from ear to ear. My blueberry tea was also very intense and rich in flavour and acted as a perfect accoutrement to the experience. Overall it was a delightful and faultless experience, and I would highly recommend!

This is a shame. It’s a lovely spot and right near the Errol Flynn cinema. It was no special occasion but I booked a table for my husband and I for lunch before the cinema. We’re last here in 2014! On that occasion I remeber a pleasant buzz’ and having a really enjoyable afternoon. When we arrived we were shown to a table for two which seemed to have been placed in a gap in the middle of the room. This view was reinforced by customers and waiting staff literally squeezing ( and I mean squeezing) but the table constantly. BUT. The main issue was the sheer NOISE. This was the level of noise in a busy nightclub. The room is waaayyyy to small for-the amount of tables they have in there AND....wait for it....a baby shower party of 16. Nothing at all against that party they were having a good time. But the noise and chaos was overwhelming. The food was ok but we couldn’t finish our meals. The waiting staff were fabulous and tried to handle things as best they could but I knew they knew it wasn’t perfect.I never like to raise an issue without solutions.......could they inform of large parties when anyone books? Could they hold parties on certain afternoons and be closed to other bookings? Is there any room on the premises for a few tables in a quiet area ? I wouldn’t return in a hurry but wish I could. It needs a review if it’s policies urgently. Sorry the dining rooms but it’s just not Working!

I had seen really good reviews and lovely photos of the food but was so disappointed with our experience as it was a birthday treat for my friend. The quality of the food was average at best, if people are raving about the Afternoon tea then all I can say is they are easily pleased. The sandwiches were mediocre, scones were nice and the pastries and petit fours were terrible, they tasted bought rather than freshly made with no cake in sight, it looked nothing like the photos people have posted. Lack of substance and quality, it feels like The Dining room is running on past glories and have become complacent. Service was EXTREMELY slow we were never asked if we wanted more sandwiches or whether we enjoyed the food and the staff were not attentive to top up drinks. Afternoon tea should be an indulgence, meant to excite the palate with small delicious treats. Overall for £33.90 to get 1 tier of savouries and sweets.... really not worth it.

We were seated upstairs away from the main dining room which suited us perfectly, as it was very peaceful and relaxing with just four tables in our section of the room. The main dining room can be a little noisy if there is a large group booking. The afternoon tea was of an excellent quality with a good variety of savoury and sweet items. We particularly like that in addition to sandwiches, you have a savoury tartlet and savoury scone. Plenty of jam and and cream for the sweet scone and a good variety of cakes. We were welcomed warmly and shown to our table, where we ordered some rather lovely New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc which was served beautifully chilled. Really, we could not fault the meal in any respect; the starter was delicious and not too filling, for the main course the meat was tender and full of flavour, vegetables were perfectly cooked and the roast potatoes were delightfully crisp. My Brie, caramelised onion and grape sandwich came out. I ordered brown wholemeal bread but got seeded (not an option on the menu - I assumed a substitute) and it was slightly stale ... deeply disappointed . I’m hard of hearing and the acoustics were dreadful, my hearing aids didn’t like this place at all - of this is not their fault at all and this problem has not affected my score.

I managed to shoehorn in some lunch between a guided tour of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's splendid interiors at 78 Derngate and a showing of North by Northwest at the Erroll Flynn Film house. This meant I was tight for time, which the waiting staff understood, and I was accommodated accordingly. My very narrow time window meant I just had hand-carved ham egg and chips with a pot of tea - but all around me people were making choices from groaning cake stands packed with eye-catching goodies as they enjoyed the venue's signature afternoon tea. I'll just need to come back to try that some other time!

As you walk in you may be surprised at the size of the room but definitely a nice spread. Everyone is seated at the same time and each course bought out once everyone is finished with what is on the table. Scones come out warm which is lovely and great customer servic3

We had a great experiences at the dining room on the 28th of October before going to the theatre they were very busy indeed with two baby showers but still attended to our needs as my sister in law doesn't like tea and without charge swapped it to coke and we didn't like a few sandwiches and the swapped it to the ones we liked. great service great food with a good variety cakes were absolutely delicious and fresh and we were very happy with the experience and will come again.

I attended a baby shower here and I wasn’t very impressed. The way the room had been split up (to accommodate two seperate baby showers) wasn’t thought through at all. It ended up leaving both heavily pregnant ladies squashed in against a wall. There was very little room for the staff to manoeuvre and every time someone had to get up to go to the loo, the whole side of the table had to get up to let them out. As for the food, whilst the sandwiches were very nice, there was hardly any of it! There wasn’t a menu in sight so it was a case of guessing what was in the sandwiches and I couldn’t eat the cakes as I’m allergic to apple so wasn’t sure what was in some of them and to top it all off, you had to constantly ask for drinks, again no menu so everyone just opted for tea. I think with a little more organising and a little more food I would’ve given it 5 stars. Oh, it’s also unsuitable for wheelchair users as the toilets are down a ridiculously small and dark set of stairs.

Whether Is is just for coffee and snack, lunch, or even better afternoon tea which is scrumptious. But don’t have lunch before it, though you can take away what you cannot eat. You have to book for afternoon tea, but anticipation is part of the enjoyment

I went to a friends baby shower here today. The afternoon tea was very good. However, we were rather squashed in with another baby shower as well as other people trying to have a quiet afternoon tea.

The wonderfully talented young couple who run the tea room at 78 Derngate provide a beautiful spotless classy venue with unbelievably good home made top quality food. The neat sandwiches, spectacular scones and patisserie are worthy of any high end exclusive "starred" venue at a truly amazing value for money price. Would recommend and will use over and over again.

This afternoon we enjoyed a fabulous afternoon tea in the tea room at 78 Derngate. The service and standard of high quality food made by the chef patron was amazing and absolutely fabulous value for money. The ambiance, cleanliness and attention to detail down to the cups & saucers is top class. The only sad thing was seeing empty tables booked by thoughtless people who never turned up. Shame on them.

Me and 2 family members came here for an afternoon tea. There was a lovely choice of food, and it was amazing that you get two courses with your afternoon tea, which I hadn't heard of before. As we had booked, the food was ready when we arrived which was great. Would recommend

We recently visited the Dining Room in Derngate prior to a visit around 78 The Derngate. This was a Birthday gift for my Wife from our Son. On arrival we were sent to the room and stood for around 5minutes with no one around finally a young girl appeared we showed her the voucher and she pointed at 2 tables by the window and said take your pick. She then brought the menu over the wife asked what our voucher included she pointed to the one that was included we then asked if we could upgrade to the presseco this was not a problem. The presseco was brought out followed by the sandwiches. Looking around the window cill had coffe stains on it the table cloth had stains and the cup was stained. All through the tea we were never asked what tea or coffee we wanted I had to ask and it was at this point it seemed like an effort. Would I go again certainly not very disappointing. The house tour was excellent though.

Booked afternoon tea for 2 after a trip around 78 Derngate the Rennie Macintosh interior designed house.I had previously asked for and got a window seat, as if the conversation lulls there is plenty to keep you entertained as Beckets Park is across the road. Started with tea which you order from a short menu. I chose Lapsang Souchong, which is wonderful and peaty. I only drink it on special occasions and this brew whilst tea bags was good. I had a second pot.!The sandwiches and savories are flavoursome and a nice interval is allowed before the sweet pastries are delivered. These are calorific and wonderful. You can tell they are made in house. A doggy bag is provided if you cannot finish, although we managed to clear the plates. I would recommend to anybody and we shall bring our two grandsons next time. They do a special children's high tea, although my 9 year old would probably eat the normal tea. They would love it.If you are looking for a place for afternoon tea, look no further. Even on a Tuesday afternoon the Dining Room was almost full. In nice weather there is outside seating.

We visited as a couple in July 2017 - it was a Wedding Anniversary treat. There are 3 different options for afternoon tea, we went for the non-alcohol option at £16.95 each. The room is small with lots of tables, I can imagine it would be quite hot/noisy if it were full. The table setting was lovely (little love heart confetti for us - nice touch) and the views onto the gardens good. The food itself was very nice - sandwiches, quiches, etc for savoury and the desserts (my special gift is eating cake) were beautiful. There was plenty of food for us both and we both left full and very happy. I would recommend this venue for a lovely english afternoon tea. I'm going to book for my Mum's birthday next... Thank you.

Sitting alongside the Charles Rennie Mackintosh museum in the Derngate, the Dining Room offers a brilliant afternoon tea to suit all tastes. You can visit the Dining Room without going to the museum, but it pays to book as it often gets busy. Supported by friendly and efficient staff, it is definitely worth a visit. Highly recommended.

I took my friend to The Dining Room for an afternoon tea as a special birthday treat. We enjoyed a beautifully presented and extremely tasty selection of savoury and sweet delights. Everything we ate was homemade and the flavours really worked well. The service was very good and there was great attention to detail providing sparkly confetti for the table and a candle on a cake for my friend, a lovely touch. This is a real hidden gem and I will definitely be returning and will spread the word! Thank you.
