The Devonshire in Bolsover

Visited The Devonshire last week. very clean and tidy and we where happy with the covid19 rules n place.Our starters where fine but the main meals where a let down. I asked for vegetableswith my steak and was served salad, this resulted in both meals having to be returned to the kitchen.The steak I had was fine but all the rest of the accompaniment's tasted very salty, the chips mushrooms and sauce where over the top for my liking, why not let the customer add salt if they require it, disappointed.

Lunch for four midweek and still as excellent as ever. Food good service great. Staff always attentive. Food always hot and plentiful. Great choice of beers.

Lucky to get a table here even at 5 pm on a Tuesday ! The service was lovely very friendly with young staff who were very well trained - polite helpful and nicely manneredThe food was fabulous we had a squid starter and also the pate which was with a beautifully dressed salad.Mains were the amazing steak pie - it was epic and the Lamb rump which was exceptionalGreat food lovely service can’t wait to come back

Booked for the official last day of eat out to help out. Lucky we did. They were sold out all day. I have never known a restaurant have to turn as many people away. This of course says something about the Devonshire.All safety precautions are taken. The pleasant staff all wear masks. Hand sanitiser is given on entry and you get a little bottle on your table.Food was very well cooked and presented. Reasonably priced as well.Tried the famous cornflake cake with the pink custard. Huge piece of cake, could have done with more custard. Will definitely return.

Dinner for two was excellent. We felt very safe. Service was quick and polite. Coffee surprisingly good but a limited selection of malts.

After not eating out for 6 months was looking forward to Sunday lunch here. Was really happy with all the safety procedures in place but was very disappointed with the meal. A party of 4 we all had different meats and all were lovely however the accompaniments we could not eat. Hard roast potatoes and just really dry food.I did state that we were unhappy to the waitress when asked if everything was OK as plates were left unfinished but nothing further was said.As we had been here before mid week before Covid and loved it we were looking forward to this meal. Staff great, safety great but won't eat here again. Very disappointing first venture out.

Been here several times! And I must say it’s one of my favourite places to go! Never had a bad meal! Food and staff are spot on!

We visited the Devonshire yesterday and so glad we did. We both had starters my partner had bre wedges and I had the haddock fish cake. Now the mains and by far the best bit- the blade of beef which we both had. All I can say is define. It was one of the best main courses we have ever had and the portion size was massive. So big we had to skip dessert. Having chosen the Devonshire for their famous cornflake tart and pink custard I had to have a take away. When getting home I could not believe the portion size. There was more than enough for us both and was my number 1 pudding ever.Thanks again for having us and thank you to all your amazing staff who were all so welcoming, friendly and immaculately presented. Well done we will be back . Ps loved the pickles cucumber on the starter..just like Grandma used to do!!

Absolutely wonderful, from the moment we called to reserve to stepping in. Friendly attentive staff, all masked, helpful and so accommodating. Food is second to none. Amazing atmosphere everything you could ask for and more. I seriously could not fault one inch of anything. We all left happy, full and felt so safe. Love the little bottle of hand sanitizer such a nice touch. Cannot wait you come back!

The food was excellent and the service attentive but not over bearing. the staff were very friendly and helpful.The pub itself is also very tastefully decorated and we felt very safe in the current climate with screens between the tables.

We had a really lovely meal last week with friends. Everything from beginning to end was wonderful. We received a friendly welcome and the staff were marvellous throughout the meal. We had the set two course lunch menu, the food was delicious, the servings large and they were part of the government voucher scheme. We all felt very safe and well looked after and wouldn't hesitate to recommend anyone to visit. Thank you very much, we will be back!

My party of three had the pleasure of a meal yesterday. The social distancing measures were exceptionally good, the staff very friendly, the meal was amazing and hand sanitiser was placed on the table. I can thoroughly recommend the ploughman's, and the puddings were to die for. I cannot rate the Devonshire more than five stars, but would do if it were possible. Well done all the staff and management team.

Always amazing food and service here. It literally never ever disappoints. Ordered through lock down and the food was just has good as eating in the restaurant & we are back this weekend. Great atmosphere and just an all round great country pub (the only thing I would say is it needs some good cheesecake puddings on the desert menu lol)

My girlfriend and I were recommended this place by the owner of the cottage we were staying in. We got a late booking and it was well worth the wait. My girlfriend had the brie starter and said it was the best starter she has ever had. The food as a whole was amazing and the portions would fill anyone! The staff were friendly even through the masks. Easy to navigate and simple, quick and polite service. Would go back in a heartbeat.

not able to visit the venue so we opted for the takeaway menu , the family of 5 was very impressed with the service from start to finish the food was excellent .skillfully packed,the food was hot and well prepared it gets a ten out of ten yes believe me it was excellent the team at the dev,should be given a pat on the back well done for putting the show on the road .

We have visited The Derbyshire on many occasions prior to lock down so thought we would give their takeaway service a try. I can't say enough how professional, safe and easy the experience was from phoning the order through to collection, and the people I spoke to were all very friendly and helpful. All aspects of social distancing and staying safe had been thought about. The food, as usual, was absolutely delicious. Perfectly cooked and still hot when we got it home - compliments to the staff in the kitchen. We will definitely be using this service until we can visit the pub again. Thank you.

The best place to eat. Great for date night, celebrations and a treat night. Valentines set menu never disappoints. Friendly staff, nice decor, high quality food and relaxing atmosphere.

Nice warm welcome from the staff, cosy table, extensive menu, mature wine selection. Fast efficient service by a charming young lady (Debbie), knows her stuff, nothing too much trouble and made several good suggestions regarding menu choices. Everything cooked and delivered perfectly. Well done Debbie! Prices reasonable, beers good, no complaints. Will book again, but difficult on a Saturday.(A sign of success!)

We have been regular visitors to The Devonshire for well over two years. We go for Sunday lunch once per month and every visit has been excellent. A cosy bar area, nice cask beers, wonderful decor and ambience, coupled with attentive lovely staff.Today we sat at table 8, we were served by a lovely girl called Keeley, and as I have stated before, the food was wonderful, beautifully cooked and presented. To anyone thinking of dining at The Devonshire, don't hesitate, get a table booked!

At my sons request to dine here, we booked a table with balloons for his birthday, now that doesn't sound a lot, but they had a lovely bunch on the table when we arrived, we ordered from the new menu and the food was delicious with 1 exception, however this was exchanged very quickly and with great professionalism. Nothing was too much trouble and the whole experience was delightful, the food was amazing. The staff are so helpful and courteous, professional and welcoming. Archie in particular was an absolute star, and although we have been many times before we will definitely be going again. Thank you so much for a fabulous visit, we will see you again soon.

Location great, food good. What a shame the bill was hiding an unexpected surprise. A meal with 3 ex work colleagues on a weds evening. Booking online, was surprised this needed £5 per person deposit as it was a midweek booking and no special event. One friend was sadly I’ll s o couldn’t attend but 3 of us still occupied a 4 person table so unless there were any plans to place a random stranger with us, we hadn’t caused any problem for the restaurant. In fact there were very few people eating at the time.So imagine the surprise when the £20 deposit became a £15 deduction from the bill because the 4th person hadn’t turned up. That in itself was disappointing and in our opinion, mean. But even worse - had we booked by telephone we would not have had to pay a deposit at all and therefore wouldnt have been told we’d lost £5! The manager said it was too easy to book online and then not turn up. Which is why the restaurant introduced the need for a deposit. Surely just as easy to do the same by phone ! Sounds like digital discrimination to me. The manager did eventually refund our £5 but only after much discussion. Such a shame that our evening is now marked with a very bitter taste in the mouth,So, if you’re going to book in advance, make sure you do it by phone to avoid paying a deposit - which, by the way costs the restaurant more in terms of time spent dealing with the customer instead of them self serving online ! Really appreciate how no shows can impact the hospitality industry but the clue is in the word - hospitable! Not ☹️

As the title states I came here with my family for my 30th birthday meal. I had the soup for starter, the turkey roast for main and the cornflake tart and pink custard for pudding and I absolutely adored every part of the meal. I am not one for taking photos of my food, so no pictures to accompany this review, but I'd come back and eat here again in a heartbeat. It was fantastic. The drinks are great too, I had the rhubarb and ginger Gin, it was beautiful. Keep up the great work guys xx.

I have eaten here on many occasions last 4 years new years eve gala dinner fantastic, but sometimes have found dinner a little rushed. on Saturday night 4 of us had a wonderful evening service not too rushed food very good and the whole place has such a fabulous atmosphere , booked for Mothers day really looking forward to it

waitress didnt know what drinks they had. had to keep going to bar to check. common language. chicken was tough and not edible I left it and told waitress no solution. I emailed place to complain no reply.

Visited for a meal with friends. Service excellent, food absolutely beautiful. Presented to perfection Kitchen even went out their way to do the cream egg brownie especially as not on menu yet. Much appreciated I have never left here disappointed

Still great food and service. Four of us dined on Sat night. Even though they had a party of 30 in the service was still spot on. The food plentiful and fresh. My first pint of real ale was returned as it was sour,but it may have been the end of the barrel. It was quickly exchanged with plenty of apologies.

Visited here in January one Friday evening. Definitely one of my favourite places to eat in the area. The menu is the kind where its genuinely hard to pick just one thing to have, especially the appetisers. All food is ordered with the confidence of quality, taste and good presentation being served. The bar area is quite small and can get very busy but it does not spoil the experience. Staff are all nice and friendly, decor is stylish and fresh. We will be back soon.

After a brief consultation with my daughter, it was decided that I could not score The Devonshire any less than 5 stars. It was the perfect family outing.

Lovely meal for Valentine's Day the cornflake tart is a MUST with pink custard (reminds you of school days) only gripe my husband paid a lot for tonight's meal and the restaurant put a lot of effort in with balloons and red roses but you only got your table for 2 hours....I think paying these prices you should get your table for the evening

Fabulous meal once again. Smashing to see so many GF options that aren't just steak and boiled potatoes! With 3 of us it's nice to go somewhere nice to eat and not feel like a nuisance. Keeley looked after us exceptionally well all night. Just the right amount of chat and friendliness and always there before our drinks ran out! An asset to you. Please continue with your fab range for us coeliacs, and we'll continue to visit you.

We were a party of 11 who had Sunday lunch here to celebrate my Mums 80th birthday.

We came last night and had the most amazing meal, prawn cocktail followed by haddock , home cooked fries and wither garden or mushy peas . The service was impeccable to say how busy it was and the food was amazing . Special praise to chef Charlie smith who I was told was on starters , the nicest prawn cocktail I’ve eaten anywhere . Would highly recommend here to anyone .

After all the lavish food over Xmas and New Year we returned to The Devonshire on Sunday 19 January. As always, a lovely bar area stocked with lovely cask ales. We sat at table 8 at 1.30. Served by lovely, efficient attentive staff. Wonderful food, beautifully cooked and presented. We shall be returning soon.

We went here before Christmas with friends and family, it was smaller in side then it looks from out side but well worth the visit, the food was very tasty it is very clean and modern staff were very friendly, I little expensive but you get what you've paid for very nice would definitely revisit and recommend to all.

Very nice place for Sunday lunch. Food excellent, atmosphere cozy but not cramped. Staff very courteous and attentive but not excessively. Overall great service and meal. Been twice over past few weeks !!!

Visited here yesterday for an evening meal with friends for a New Year get together which we do every year and this is the 2nd time in the past year our group have come to the Devonshire.

Having visited here previously five times we arranged to meet here with friends on Monday 6th as it is half way between them (North Yorkshire) and us Solihull. Once again we six all enjoyed our meals ( shame the new potatoes were not cooked enough and not tossed in butter with the quiche, but the steak and ale pies were excellent).

Overall very good food. We ate off the December menu and everyone was happy bar the person who had the pheasant which was chewy. Very large portions so go hungry before hand and the deserts are excellent. I find the chairs uncomfortable after a couple of hours though I do have a bad back. Overall we were happy and will go back. P.S. Hubbie loved the chips.

Game salad starter was excellent and so was the welcome on arrival. Ambiance was a pleasant surprise as well. It went down hill from there. Three mains ranged from excellent (mallard) through OK (slow cooked beef) to poor ( posh ham, egg & chips). The latter had a rubber egg (picture of underside) and a very chewy ham hock although it was full of flavour. This was disappointing compounded by a very long wait to come and take our sweet orders of over 30 minutes. Clearly states on the menu there is a 2 hour window if you book a table but if the tables cannot be serviced, especially when quiet then this restriction needs to be revised.

Tasty Sunday lunch in a beautiful restaurant. Gravy was delicious and veg were fresh and cooked just right. Meat was plentiful but could have been a bit more tender. Chicken was a bit dry Will visit again to try another menu

the new Devonshire is going from strength to strength our sunday lunch was lush all the party gave the thumbs up ,all the meats were so tender the veg was a delight with a nice bite to them and the Yorkshire puds well what can i say looks as if they were made with Viagra ???? filled the plate loved them , and the staff never fail to deliver great service ,the Christmas feel was in spades so its a 10 out 10 , merry Christmas

Visited last night, six in our party. We all had the festive menu and all made different choices from it. Everyone of our dishes was beautifully cooked, well presented and good portion size. All the staff we came into contact with were extremely attentive and pleasant.

Visited last night with a group of work friends. This is the best local restaurant for a tasty meal with beautiful vegetables. The blade of beef was, as always, tender and tasty. The vegetables are crunch and tasty just how I like them. Service is lovely and not rushed. Perfect for a chilled evening with friend. Looking forward to going back already. We have been here with our visitors regularly, third time so far since we moved to this part of the UK. Food is really good very generous portions (perhaps too much for us oldies! - perhaps a Pensioner size would be good?). But quality is fabulous. Service is excellent and staff are very attentive and cheery.

Myself and my partner have been to The Devonshire many, many times, the greater part of the visits have been for Sunday lunch. We have been today (1 December) and once again the food, staff, service ambience was wonderful. My partner's favourite dessert is sticky toffee pudding. Today this was not on the menu, yet the waitress/chef served my partner with her favourite. For anyone thinking of dining at The Devonshire, don't hesitate, just book a table.

Six of us visited the Devonshire tonite to celebrate my daughter’s Birthday and had a great night . The atmosphere at this place is perfect the staff are friendly and welcoming and the place looks great. To top it off the food was amazing . I had the Turkey it was perfect I can happily say I haven’t eaten Turkey that good before . The portions were great the service was great . Thank you all at the Devonshire for a great night .

This was the second time here we took our relatives from Essex and no one was disappointed it was very good, the food was excellent and ambiance was just as good we had a table in the Orangery with plenty of room, the food was very very good no one could find fault and the portions are very generous, all the staff are very attentive and Archie our waiter could not have been more helpful.

My wife and I met friends again on Friday 8th (half way for us and them from North Yorkshire) as we have had four times before and once again the food and service

Visited on a Sunday evening with my sister and her partner. First time to this pub, and hopefully not my last. What a lovely place! Tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean, nicely lit, real log burner to greet you in the entrance on a cold evening. Chairs in dining area very comfortable and tables placed not too close together so conversations can easily be kept private. Staff very welcoming and friendly and service was quick. Food was absolutely delicious; cooked to perfection and presented very nicely. Altogether a very pleasant experience.

We have been quite a few times now for different occassions. The food is always really good.

Staff very welcoming, beautiful setting,wood burner,old worldly charm,comfortable and pleasant. The food was gorgeous the restaurant is beautiful but having a child screaming every few minutes wasn't nice..the staff and other diners weren't happy...maybe there needs to be a cut off point for families and the evenings for adults.

Very good food & service portions are of a very good size good choices of dishes staff are very good service is excellent & you’re not rushed between course’s so very happy

We visited again for Sunday Lunch for our wedding anniversary on the 20th October. We have been visiting since it originally opened for several different occasions, including New Years day lunch, and have never been disappointed. Sam looked after us this time (as he did New Years day, although he couldn't remember!) and as usual he is the pinnacle of great customer service, although all the staff are well trained and pleasant, and seem to enjoy their jobs. Looking forward to whatever excuse I can think of for us to return their. Well done to everybody!!

We approached The Devonshire to host our wedding reception meal with family and friends following our return from getting married overseas. We met with Sam to help us choose dishes we could offer our guest, we choose 4 starters and mains to offer. We chose dishes we had enjoyed at the venue previously and following advice on dishes from Sam.

This place is amazing had a business meal and what can I say loved the food,staff and place Well done I'll be coming back

food is ok, but is well over priced, some of our food was overcooked and slightly burnt, by the time replacement came our meal was finished, lovely surroundings but not good value for money.

Booked for 5.00,arrived ordered food, very busy restaurant, waiting time was very minimal, food was piping hot and cooked to perfection, I had the roast beef was pink perfect and so tasty, my wife had the pork which again she said was delicious, we did find room to have the cornflake tart and the sticky toffee pudding again superb x well done all at the Devonshire made a great afternoon for us both x will be back

Spare of the moment Lunch at the Devonshire did not disappoint. Lovely food served by very competent staff. Nothing was too much trouble.

The Dev has an amazing friendly atmosphere. The staff are lovely and can’t do enough for you. It’s a beautiful place and the food is out of this world. I highly recommend for any type of occasion.

Visited last,night party of seven. Professional friendly service, good menu choice, everyone very satisfied with the presentation, quality and taste of their meals. Will visit again!

I wasn't aware it was only Sunday lunch when I booked as I'd been wanting to try the vegan menu for some time. I asked about the Vegan menu as there were non shown on the menu and was shown the vegetarian option. So only 1 choice of main and starter no sweet. The meal came then I realised they hadn't made it vegan as the mash had butter and I had the same Yorkshire as anyone else. There wasn't enough gravy and the dinner was very dry I didn't want to have the gravy in the boat as I'm sure that wouldn't have been vegan both my son and husband said the gravy in the boat was salty and spoilt their meal. The starter the balsamic was drowned by oil and impossible to get to without tipping some of the oil out. A party of 4 and everyone said they didn't enjoy it.

We were driving back North from the South coast and needed to find a place for Sunday Lunch. We decided on the Devonshire when we were 2 hours drive away and on the way we were getting hungrier and hungrier.

Visited on a busy Sunday lunch for myself and my partner, we hadn't booked and were so grateful they squeezed us in. The staff were fantastic and couldn't do enough for us, really friendly and polite. The food itself, we had two Sunday dinners one pork one beef and a side of cauliflower cheese (the best I have ever tasted in my life, and id like to think of myself as a bit of a cauliflower cheese conisseur. Cheesy I know!) The beef was cooked perfectly pink and we were even given the choice of pink or medium which I think is fantastic as I know not all restaurants give you this option. Absolutely melt in the mouth! Everything was supreme quality and all for the price of 11.95 a meal! It is definately worth a lot more than this. We can't wait to return again and try all the tasty menu options!

My mum took us here for our 20th Anniversary and we were not disappointed. From the minute we walked in the staff behind the bar were very professional and welcoming and this lasted all through the visit and our server Rach was amazing. The balloons on the table were even the colour that we got married in 20 years ago. The food was brilliant and very tasty in lovely surroundings. Thank you for a very memorable time.

Having visited everyone of Jono and Paul's restaurants apart from The Devonshire we decided it was time for a visit. Again the food and service were superb. Can not fault it at all. I had the sausage and mash. When it came there didn't look to be loads but it was more than enough. Very filling. Hubby had the herb coated chicken followed by the cherry bakewell pudding. He said both of those were very good. The only reason I gave four stars is that hubby loves his real ales and claimed that the harvest pale was very poor which he says is consistent with and why not

What an amazing place! We arrived with high expectations, and the team excelled by 200% with the quality feel of the environment, welcome, quality of food and great service. Alison looked after us, her passion for the company and menu knowledge is impressive and is a true professional. Thank you The Devonshire team, we'll return again soon.

Visited for a special birthday meal but very disappointing. Menu is a missrepresentation of what is actually served to the table which can only be described as glorified pub food and the price of such is extremely expensive for what it is.

Our first time at The Devonshire and WOW - from walking in to leaving nothing was too much trouble. Our waitress Allison was so friendly Just like we were special friends! The food was so delicious from the starter to the dessert -great selection and portion size - overall lovely relaxing atmosphere & not too overpriced. Well Done to all the staff - will certainly be returning.

Last night 13/09/2019 went to the devonshire for a birthday meal with friends and family 17 adults and 3 children and the service was excellent all meals came together and very tasty all the staff were amazing in the bar and the restaurant they couldn't do enough for you once again thank you all and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone

We popped in around 6 o’clock on a whim that we may get a table without a booking. The staff were very accommodating and seated us swiftly (Little did we know within half an hour the place was beaming with custom and they must have been almost fully booked, but still made space for us!). Kaileyh and Debbie looked after us and gave us amazing service. We skipped starters to make sure we had room for the legendary cornflake tart and pink custard pudding, it did not disappoint. Our mains were also so amazing it was the only thing we chatted about during our dinner, the tastes were incredible. I can happily say this has been the best meal we’ve had out in a long time. Nothing was disappointing.

Another fantastic meal, Treated my parents to a meal for All there help. And once again wasn't disappointed.Thanks to Adam for the great service and friendly staff and lovely atmosphere. We will be back.

I could not write my latest review due to the Trip Advisor rules until late August.. Me and my partner last went to The Devonshire for Sunday lunch on 11 August. As always, wonderful food, lovely staff and surroundings.

Beautiful surroundings. Amazing food. Fantastic service.. We will definitely be returning. We went on a recommendation and wasn’t disappointed.. very generous portions. Highly recommend the Cornflake Tart and pink custard!

This is the 2nd time we have dined here and it is quite nice, we particularly asked for a "window" table and it was good. Car park is very tight however, but that is because it is a popular place. Food and service is good.

Gruff had the Ploughman's which he declared was the best he'd ever had (and believe me he has had many) I went with the falafel pitta, and am not vegan but found it amazing. All staff were above expectation. A gem of a find!

Thoroughly enjoyed everything from the beautiful decor and the outside very continental feeling seating area. The weather was gorgeous so that added the extra.So pleased they have air conditioning and they had it on as well which many places dont.

Booked a table for a family birthday treat , service and food was outstanding, lovely friendly staff very helpful and attentive, food was absolutely delicious!! Would definitely be going again .

We consider The Devonshire to be our nearest "go to" pub when we don't want to cook or when we have friends staying and want to go out for Sunday lunch (booking essential). The lunchtime favourites menu served until 2.30pm is extremely good value - fabulous fish and chips just right for smaller appetites. What a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Four of us visited for lunch and from entering the Devonshire we were made to feel at home and very welcome.Our table was in the orangery and as it was a warm and humid day the air conditioning was very nice making it very comfortable. We all had Sunday roast,2xBeef and 2x Pork,with all the trimmings,it was delicious,the meat was cooked just right as were the veggies,homemade Yorkshire’s and the best gravy I’ve had in a good while. My friend and me asked if we could have a choice for dessert from the evening menu as we wanted creme brûlée,It was no problem at all,the staff were wonderfully obliging.All of the puddings were fabulous and plentiful. So glad we went,we will be going back!
