Went to the Delauney Counter for lunch 18th Apr with my son, who work around the corner.. We both had hotdogs which were almost comically awful. Over £12 for something I would have been disappointed to get for £3.50 at a fairground. Awful, textureless, flavourless, hotdogs, very over-sweet piles of onion in a over sweet bun. Very poor. Not remotely what I would expect from the Delauney. Fries were ok, service was polote. That's what the 2 stars are for. The hotdogs would have got zero.

Superb service and really nice to eat in a restaurant on a Saturday when there is no annoying background music so you can hear the conversation of your fellow diners. Food was good, but smoked salmon would be better without onions!

We went for a post theatre matinee meal and had a drink in the bar first. The venue is classy and stylish albeit obviously very traditional. The waiter who served us drinks in the bar space was great; super attentive constantly topping up our water glasses. Unfortunately the service in the dining room was nowhere near as good - confusion over dishes, missing bread, and when pouring wine for the group, he poured such large glasses that we had no choice but to order another bottle so everyone had a taste. Food was pretty good value as we opted for the set menu - some portion sizes were on the small side, although that’s pretty much the case everywhere in London now! Overall a decent experience - I wouldn’t rush back though.

Challenge Food - Steak Tartare Challenge 1 - 5 x importance of 5 As I stepped into the grandeur of The Delaunay, my anticipation soared. Nestled in the pulsating heart of Covent Garden, amidst the vibrant theater district, expectations were high. Alas, while The Delaunay didn't quite meet the mark on several fronts, the steak tartare did offer a glimmer of hope. Despite lacking the theatrical flair one would expect, it possessed a surprising depth of flavour. Moist and well seasoned, with a small golden yolk nestled at its core, it was pleasurable on the palate which earned it a modest commendation. 3 x 5 = 15 Service 1 - 5 x importance of 4 Enveloped in European opulence, The Delaunay exudes an air of grandeur. However, the veil of sophistication is swiftly lifted as one encounters the shortcomings in service. From a reluctance to accommodate our seating preferences to the abrupt revelation of a strict two-hour dining limit, the experience left much to be desired. The illusion of luxury shatters under the weight of unmet expectations, leaving a bitter aftertaste. Somewhat needless in such a fine setting and infuriating that you feel rather rushed from the point you step into the Delaunay to the moment you are cast from its shadows. 2 x 4 = 8 Non Challenge Food 1 - 5 x importance of 3 Hoping for a symphony of flavours befitting a European establishment, I ventured towards the Schnitzel—a choice that fell flat on its promise. Despite its imposing size, the Schnitzel lacked the vibrancy expected of such a classic dish. Even the addition of pickled cucumber failed to inject life into its lacklustre presence. With presentation bordering on uninspired and flavour as elusive as a fleeting dream, the dish left a palpable void on the palate and disappointment in all aspects. 2 x 3 = 6 Venue 1- 5 x importance of 2 Amazingly situated just yards away from the Waldorf Hotel and as alluded, nestled in the heard of the theatre district. It would be hard to fault the location and the venue, the only thing was it failed to live up to the hype. Venue will earn this review some points, which is a good thing as not a lot els was going for the Delaunay. 4 x 2 = 8 Presentation 1 - 5 x importance of 1 Perched within a stone's throw of the Waldorf Hotel, The Delaunay basks in its enviable location. The allure of the theatre district serves as a fitting backdrop to this culinary endeavour. Yet, while the setting exudes promise, it fails to deliver on the heightened expectations. The venue, a diamond amidst the rough, struggles to shine in the face of unmet potential and general tiredness on so many levels. Wake up would be my message to the Delaunay, you dictate a strong ransom for very average, so imagine the potential of getting this right. 2 x 1 = 2 Overall Impression The Delaunay falls short of the lofty pedestal set by its prestigious locale and overly generous accolades. It's not merely a lack of fine dining; it's an exercise in culinary disappointment cloaked in the trappings of opulence. Should you choose to grace its halls, temper your expectations, or you find yourself ensnared in the web of disillusionment spun by this establishment who will certainly make your purse feel like your expectations have been met. Must try harder would be the final note on this below average report. Overall 39/75 * * * A sad 2.5 - 3 stars

My partner bought me a Theatre experience including dinner for 2 at The Delaunay. We are Vegans, so we emailed & called in advance to confirm that would be ok. On arrival, we were offered the regular menu / Gluten Free menu (they also have a specific children’s menu) - but no Vegan menu. We were offered a “chopped salad & 1 main”. Honestly my heart sank. Our Server “Ged” saw how disheartened we were. So he spoke with the chef who agreed they need to create more Vegan options. They created us 2 starters, 2 mains & 2 desserts - which were AMAZING. And they said they would be discussing a Vegan menu for ‘environmentally conscious consumers’. 100% saved by Ged - he was kind, understanding, took time to help & entirely saved our experience. Thank you. 🙏

My friend is a regular and recommended this restaurant for lunch. The venue is stunning, art deco, with attentive waiting staff. I had the chicken schnitzel sandwich - big mistake. The bun was low quality, supermarket packet standard bap. The chicken schnitzel was a sorry state. Wafer thin and overcooked and dry around the edges. Completely tasteless. I had to have pudding as still starving after leaving the dried bits of chicken and the processed bap. The apple strudel was ok. All in all a big disappointment with a bill to pay of £145 for 2. Will not be back or recommend.

The Delauney had excellent food and prompt service during our visit. The overall service was attentive and professional, however our visit was ruined by the fact that the waiter who took our food order was unfriendly and made everyone in our party uncomfortable. His obvious negative attitude towards us was particularly evident when we were placing our order. We ordered from the pre-theatre menu and we thought maybe we were not treated well due to ordering less expensive items. . All three of us at the table strongly felt that we were not welcome as customers, yet we still paid the high 15% service charge automatically added to our bill. Sadly our friend had waited years for the opportunity to go there and he left with negative impression. We are unlikely to return.

Food went absolute downhill, ordered a rare steak, came beef jerky. Very dry to a point can’t even carve with the knife given. Each cut took 30 sec tried to break in and tear it. Didn’t want to waste the beef so stomached it in. Friend’s fish and chips barely tasted fish it was like eating batter, with dry pea mash. she couldn’t finish it. It’s really sad how the ingredients has been ruined for nothing. Edit: including the price here, steak was £40 not a bad price considering if it’s properly cooked, top ingredient as stated, but in this case, money better spent elsewhere.

This was my third visit to The Delaunay and it remains absolutely outstanding. Two of us had the chicken schnitzel with lingonberry compote and a side of fries, which were excellent, while my mum thoroughly enjoyed the wild mushroom stroganoff with herb-buttered spätzle. We did also order the broccoli side dish, which was a bit underwhelming and didn't feel worth the price at all. For dessert, we ordered the Kaiserschmarrn and apple strudel to share, and staff wonderfully brought out a slice of Sachertorte with a Happy Birthday slice of marzipan for my mum, which was a lovely touch and most appreciated. The trio of desserts were all *extremely* rich! Service was outstanding (apologies as I didn't get the name of the team who served us) and we'll definitely be back.

I suspect that the management here probably pride themselves as a fine dining establishment with excellent service. Prices are sky high, and the imposed service charge is 15%. Unfortunately, they don't deliver on that promise. Dishes are obviously tiny, and the flavor was decent but far from amazing. Drinks are very expensive. The worst part was the inept service. Waiters are surly, inexperienced, smelly, slow, and unhelpful. They left cleaning supplies on the table behind our heads, and they refused to remove them when we asked; these would be out of sight at any quality restaurant. Instead, they are in the group pictures we took. They brought us bread, but no plates until I requested them, but they did not set them on the table properly. Wine was served in water glasses. One of the junior waiters had seriously bad body odor; he should have been sent home by management. When the food was ready, waiters threw our meals on the table, nearly breaking a glass, and they placed the wrong dishes in front of us - I ended up eating a meal that had been partially eaten by another guest due to this mistake. I would say only one of our 6 or so waiters was decent. I'm really surprised about the high rating of this restaurant. I will definitely never return.

Today was my mother’s 80th birthday. We had tickets to Ronnie Scott’s and then a late lunch booked with you at 3.30pm. I made the reservation 2 months ago. Yesterday afternoon I received a phone call from the restaurant telling me they have an event in the evening and so we must vacate by 5pm and was asked to arrive at the restaurant earlier. I explained we had tickets for a show and couldn’t come much earlier. It was made very clear to me that this was non-negotiable and we must be gone by 5pm. Not only is this incredibly poor management but the manner in which I was spoken to - both on the phone and by the same lady when we arrived at the restaurant - was rude. I had also asked for a specific table which we were not given, instead being placed by the toilets. On arrival, there was no doorman, no cloakroom for our coats and no one who offered to take our coats. During the meal, the waiting staff were inattentive and we had to request several times for our water glasses to be refilled. We poured our wine ourselves. Despite the urgency to get us out by 5pm, they were slowing taking our order for dessert and slow to bring it. Which they brought at the same time as the bill, which I hadn’t even asked for. Throughout the meal, I felt uncomfortable, anxious about the time pressure. This was a special occasion which was arranged some time ago. I’ve been coming to the Delaunay for years. To say I’m annoyed and disappointed is an understatement. The restaurant needs to sort out its management and re-learn what being in the service industry means.

Hadn’t been to Ds for over 5 years and I had good memories and possibly an old review here. This time out we visited for a late lunch on Xmas eve. Ambience remains lovely, service too. It was a busy time, and perhaps they were down a chef or two because of the day… but that’s no excuse on the quality and timing of the food we received. Wiener schnitzels: 1/10 execution, haven’t had a worse one… ever probably. Steak tartare, arrive 10mins late, with a rank half piece of toasted baguette… couldn’t make it up. We were so disappointed we escaped before deserts. Service was ok, manager was apologetic for the multiple times we sent food back, and eventually left intact on the plate, but there was no effort of curtesy to offer anything else or take things off the bill. In a nutshell: £300 for 5ppl would have been ok normally. This time? If you paid us £300 we would not go back. I hope the Wolseley is doing ok, because by this experience I d wager this company is going south fast.

A special place, with a very professional, continental atmosphere. The Counter is for casual eating, including cake and coffee, and features excellent and interesting pastries and savoury meals. The main restaurant is more formal, and the breakfast is the best value menu. It can be hard to catch a waiter’s eye when it’s very busy, and some things are overpriced - for example, the croissants and pain au chocolat are generally served stone cold by default, making the price a waste of money. Otherwise, the food is usually outstanding, with highly professional service, a unique atmosphere and mostly reasonable pricing.

its always a special experience at the Delaunay because you are about to eat in such a wonderful grand room. you arrive and the coat check feels like something out of a Wes Anderson film. As you enter the first bar and reception area and give your name you are ushered to your table. its a good entrance and everything is done in a slick and well oiled machine of a way. we came for a special lunch before a trip to the ballet. honestly it was a little hard to get the attention of the staff who were very busy resetting tables so I wouldn't give top marks on being attentive but when they did come they were perfectly professional, not super friendly but professional and that is also fine. The food arrived fast and was good. It's very good European brasserie food. There is something for everyone the menu. All of our party loved what they ordered and enjoyed the meal thoroughly. Kids had steak, I had schnitzel and husband had the spatchcock chicken. The meal was delicious as are the brussell sprouts and pickled cucumber salad sides that we ordered. This was the first time I came with my family and I have been here many times for business meeting meals. I always love how food is always the same you know what you are going to get and you know the quality. The coffee is grandly served on a silver platter with water and chocolate and this time we had little miniature mince pies too, so it was a thoughtful Christmas experience and I will always come for work meetings and now I will come again with family.

My go to place when in Aldwych or trying to avoid the hustle of Covent Garden. The food is not exceptional but good enough, the service always impeccable. This is suitable for business meetings as well as a great place to have a drink with a friend.

We were very unlucky with our waiter which greatly impacted on our overall experience. He was uncommunicative, unfriendly and generally very slow. I won’t be rushing back at those prices! I expected more of a memorable experience, not one where I felt like I was inconveniencing the waiter when simply doing his job.

Food is very average. Service even worse. We had to find a waiter to order drinks. Again to order mains. Same for dessert and the bill! Manager was very apologetic. Took the service charge off the bill. The food was bland and unoriginal. Such a shame it’s gone down hill. This place and the Wolesley used to be exceptional but no longer. Find another place nearby is my recommendation.

Extremely disappointing meal and place altogether. We paid 160£ for 2.5 meals (brunch) featuring basic food in a totally uninteresting environment. Waiters seemed as bored as we were and not particularly happy to see us. This place needs a lot of change to recover some of its past luster. Until then, it must be avoided at all cost!

Lovely atmosphere - very buzzy and cosy on a winter night. Food was tasty but let down a bit by the service on this occasion. But that’s not typical of my experience here, so a recommended restaurant if you’re in that part of London.

Sadly the transactional atmosphere of Christmas and request to free our table after we were just served another glass of champagne we ordered, made the visit to The Delaunay such a disappointing experience. Food was lovely although my Wellington was more on a medium side rather than rare, they were busy so water glasses were being filled upon requested and although we may have only (!) spent £200+ for our Christmas lunch the forced move from our table was the main reasons for 2 stars. I also work in service industry and I wish the experience matched the price tag. Sadly I won’t return again.

Always wanted to visit the Delauney and went to celebrate my husband’s 70th birthday with our family. A beautifully decorated restaurant with a wonderful ambience so our anticipation of a great dining experience was high.Sadly the food didn’t live up to our expectations. Starters were ok but main courses were mixed. The sea bream was delicious but the confit of duck with puy lentils was very salty and lacked flavour and the Wiener schnitzel was dreadful. Side portions were miserly and the broccoli was over cooked and a mush. 15% service was excessive too. All in all very expensive for average food. London has so much more to offer than this. As my Nan used to say ‘ Fur Coat with no knickers’ to describe something showy with little substance. This probably sums up the Delauney which is such a shame.

I enjoyed our early evening meal here. I like the ambiance, the service was pleasant and efficient and the food was pretty good. I particularly enjoyed the steak tartare served with frites and green salad which made a great main course. Interestingly some of the “hors doeuvres” are much more than starters so if you don’t have a large appetite beware.

Came here for a pre-theatre dinner. Food was great, spatchcock chicken and chips was delicious as was the strudel, although at £13.50, I felt the portion for this was on the small side. Overall a great meal with top service and atmosphere, even so early...
