The Crown Stirrup in New Forest

My husband were on holiday and I stopped at this pub for dinner, as most country pubs serve very good meals. NOT THIS ONE! We ordered burgers, chips etc. The burgers were dry, the salad poor quality and the chips were unbelievable - they were brown and looked as if they had been recooked. I ate hardly anything. I wanted to take a photograph and to complain but my husband said that it was not worth it as we would never go there again. I wish I had not listened to him!

Real bin of a pub. Drinks tasted awful and beer tasted a bit off, no crisps, bit dingy. Not a vibe at all and would not recommend.

I had one of the tastiest Chicken pies that I have ever eaten. Good beer and very friendly Landlady. I could also stop over in my motorhome.

We stopped in here on the way home so it was a last minute decision. We arrived at 11.50am and the kitchen opened at midday. It was a Sunday so we ordered the roast gammon. It came with a Yorkshire Pudding, delicious roasties and mixed vegetables. Really nice. It’s dog friendly with a nice family vibe.

The pub had no beer on tap. Also, it was cold. The menus were on the wall only, claiming it's homemade. My partner and I cook ourselves at home, so we know how food should taste. We came after a long walk, hungry, but I couldn't finish the food. That's how bad and weirdly smelly it was. And I'd eat a dead horse if I wasn't vegan. The stuff wasn't very welcoming either. We said in the end, we didn't love it (butternut squash wellingtons) and was told they don't normally get complaints. Reviews tell a different story though. I would have recommended this pub plenty of things they could improve but wouldn't recommend to others, unless the staff make more effort in hospitality and cooking.

A bit unloved from the outside, but better inside and a very nice barman. Drinks fine but the food was very below par. For prices that are charged (£12 for a cheese sandwich) the quality should be excellent - not sliced bread, limp lukewarm chips, vegan margarine served with the soup and bread…… need I go on? We will not be back.

Roast dinner was out of this world! Very friendly and cosy, walk straight out the back into the forest. I'm not a local but will definitely come back for visits

5 of us , family, had booked to have a meal here on Friday night. We entered an empty pub, and told there was no beer and very limited menus as they had electrical problems. We decided to stay, ordering drinks that were available. We awaited the food with trepidation, but were happily surprised to receive 5 freshly prepared meals which we thoroughly enjoyed. Well done to the staff who must have been relieved we hadn't walked out. They were lovely and we hope they get back to normal very soon. We understand they are an independent pub with no back up from a brewery. I would go again in the sumer when they are sure they will be fully functional again.

We have visited the Crown Stirrup many times over the years and had both bad and good experiences so we were wondering what it would be like this time as we visited for a pre Christmas dinner. Sadly as soon as we walked in we were told there was no draught beer, cider or lager and very few bottles and this was exceptionally disappointing for us. However, the food was very good indeed and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. I just hope next time I go back I can have a drink other than water!

Stopped off for a quick bite to eat had a stunning ham and cheese sandwich, bread really fresh crisp salad with a lovely honey and mustard dressing, proper thick cut ham and a tasty cheese. What a disappointment the Crown Stirrup was, I came from Bournemouth to enjoy a good and traditional Sunday Lunch in the New Forrest. Did anyone tell the owner its post COVID so get your garden cleaned up. The place looks closed, and it was quite and the reason could be the food the most disappointing area served by staff that have their trousers hanging around their thighs exposing underpants and buttocks to the customers while they ate. I ordered Whitebait which were as big as sardines, so big they were coated in breadcrumbs and placed on top of the tartare sauce (not freshly made) small side salad no lemon. Whitebait are sprat, small about an inch long coated in milk and seasoned flour served with a vessel of tartare sauce and side of lemon, can have sprinkling of paprika or Cayenne. Oh but the main course was something else, overcooked beef with rubber roasts peas and carrots coated in flavorless packet gravy, glossy and shiny awful, and the red cabbage same watery purple liquid finished off with supermarket horseradish sauce. All through lunch some music blaring through what seemed like a transistor radio. Just when you thought it was safe to venture out for Sunday Lunch there is the Crown Stirrup in Lyndhurst. Close up not good for british pubs and its culinary scene.

Sadly both the men's and ladies toilets were in need of maintenance and a clean and that put us off trying the food.

A lovely little pub stopover, but come on guys, tidy up the front and gardens, weeds and just a general lack of interest prevails. The hospitality is there, the food and service was good, but school report would read “could do a whole lot better….”

Stopped off for lunch and a few drinks during a walk. All the glasses served were dirty and the food was well below par. A few meals were ok but most were not good with even simple things like the peas were inedible. Bar staff seemed to not want to be there. The place could be great with the location if they served good food and in clean glasses etc.

The team were really nice We were allowed to park overnight in our Motorhome provided we had food or drinks. The menu was limited and standard pub grub. The wine was quite expensive per glass at £9.50 ouch!!!

Great place..food was lovely and Staff helpful. As ever the only thing that spoilt it was young children running around and screaming..completely ignored by their parents..not the pubs fault but think a quiet word may have helped. I stayed overnight in the carpark and despite it being on a busy road slept well (once the screamers had gone!) Garden backs straight onto woods so an easy walk for the dog too.

Wonderful! So so lovely We did a stop over and ate some wonderful vegan food! Amazing homemade burger :) Super tasty and the vegan desserts were insane ! Would definitely hope for the brownie to have been larger … because of greed but also it’s £7 price tag Bit was amazing still x super tasty fresh and warm served with ice cream ! The menu here is just what you want in a pub, classic dishes done very well. I had the pie of the day, (chicken, tarragon and leek), very tasty, served with a lovely creamy mash and vegetables. Followed by a delicious chocolate cheesecake. I was very impressed with the quality of the food and will certainly return. The staff were friendly and provided very good service.

We ate here back in August around 1pm on a Tuesday. It was quiet to start with, but then filled up. We had the roast chicken quarter, burger and duck pancakes starter, followed by chocolate cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding. The desserts were good, but the mains were nothing special.

Fantastic Sunday lunch. We had their homemade pie and veggie wellington. Really tasty proper home cooked food. We live locally and will be going back soon.

Great pub really friendly staff and delicious food. We’re camping at the Holmsley campsite and Billy gave us a speaker and plugged the tunes for the trip. Legend. Could recommend highly enough. Get ur arses down here if you want a perfect stop off after a walk.

The Crown Stirrup is a very old Pub with low ceilings. The menu is not very extensive but the chicken and Tarragon pie was excellent. Well filled and served with buttery mash and seasonal vegetables very tasty indeed. I stayed overnight in my motor home in the carpark so I could also enjoy a drink. The couple who run the pub were very friendly and made me very welcome.

Lovely pub and very friendly staff. We visited on quiet night and stayed in campervan. Great access to Forest. Garden in process of a bit of renovation when we were there. We were very pleased to have vegan options but my burger was a bit overcooked and the sausages and mash could have benefitted from the addition of herbs/mild spices. Otherwise great and lovely to have vegan wines there!

Nice old fashion pub. Very good food with a small menu. Waiting time more than average. Prices average but low as for such a nice area.

Highly recommend! If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Food was delicious, atmosphere was amazing and staff were so frienly and accomodating! My husband and I visited alongside our baby and our dog, staff were very welcoming and helpful in rearranging tables to make more room for our pram and for our dog to lay down. Very friendly pub and we will definitely be returning next time we visit Lyndhurst.

Jess and the team were very welcoming when we stayed with our motorhome in June 2023 . The food was lovely I can highly recommend the stirrup burger , I haven’t had one as good as that in years! A great menu , the food was just amazing , the best burger ever! ( the stirrup burger !) highly suggest u try that one . Table service outside was fast , we were also offered water for the van which was a nice touch . Would go again in the blink of an eye .👍

We stayed for 2 nights in our motorhome free of charge. Jess was so lovely and very accommodating, lots of walks from the beer garden and the home cooked food was beautiful, will definitely look forward to another stay.

We went there after cycle in new forest. Nice stop for a lunch break but make sure you call the pub to get a table as they can get very busy on the sunny day. We had roast dinner and portions were nice size! Service good. We sat at the back in the garden. Back garden is dog friendly and has a playground for kids.

We went here because it said there was a children's play area. They did indeed have something for the children, but it was quite poor. However, it backed onto the woods, which you could access through a gate in the beer garden. The children loved it! It was lunchtime and we had an evening meal booked so we wanted a light lunch. The menu only catered for large meals and children's menu. We thought we'd order from the children's menu, but the bar tender would not allow us to!!! So we ended up having starters with chips. The food we had was really good, but it could really do with a light lunch menu.

Really disappointed with this pub after visiting it on bank holiday Sunday - we got there about 3.30pm, they were really low on stock so we couldn't have what we wanted - and the toilets were disgustingly dirty.

Good pub with a decent sized beer garden. There's play equipment for young children. Food menu is small but tastes good. It's worth the detour if you're on one of the cycle routes.

Unloved, lived in Lyndhurst 10 years ago, it was our regular, such high prices for a very unloved garden It was 5 o’clock and the place was empty Bring our once favourite pub back, A sweep a quick weed and the benches painted would do the trick Hence we only had drinks and crisps and decided to make our way back to the island where pubs take pride in there appearance even in the gardens And on the beach,

Overall a pretty poor experience. Booked a table for 10, we arrived to find no beer on tap. The starters were bad, chewy calamari and somehow the dough balls too. The veg soup needed seasoning. Only 1 veggie main available. This is not the place for a decent roast.

Stopped overnight in a Campervan. Very welcoming, friendly and helpful hosts. Good food and beer. Excellent walks through the forest behind.

The front door sticks as you enter this old building as you walk into the bar. WOW, this is how a pub should be. Low beam ceiling, no bright lights, pipped music from the 70s and 80s, 2 beers out of stock.........I'M NOT COMPLAINING im extremely pleased. The home cooked food was fantastic, and the Gluten Free choice was good. Portions were very good, my Wife had liver and bacon with mash. I had the steak and ale pie, mash and leeks. All presented in a lovely gravey. The food is freshly made to order, and there is no rushing to get out to the table. When the kitchen door opens, the smell of fresh food floats around the bar. Great place, please don't change. (The temporary garden ornament looks out of place;-) )

There on Good Friday, after a walk in Pondhead Inclosure. Not very busy. Only one member of staff behind the bar. Other staff member had gone to source ketchup as they had run out...strange on day one of the bank holiday. Menu limited in comparison with previous visits. Waited 45 minutes for our food to arrive. Burgers were good, the chips less so.

Good beer, good food, not the cheapest, but worth the money

Came for a drink after a long walk, it was late afternoon so too early for dinner. Asked for some crisps, told by the barmaid they don’t serve crisps, nuts or anything like that, but she had a food menu. I didn’t fancy onion rings...

No idea what’s happened here and understand pubs are struggling however, we booked a meal here based on the reviews! There were 4 of us and each meal looked like a child had cooked it! Overdone, unattractive, unimaginative and very amateur. No one asked if our food was ok - even though one plate was hardly touched! When we paid we were asked if the food was ok and we just screwed up our face (thought this was a good enough indication) - no response! We definitely won’t go again.

The guys who run it were very friendly and it was a pleasure to eat there. They do struggle to keep the place warm when very cold outside but everything else was perfect, so will visit again soon.

As an ex bakery owner I was really impressed with the quality of the pastry used for the Steak and Rioja pies. But saying that all of the food we had was exceptional. The owners were very welcoming and friendly. Great motorhome stop over too...

A brilliant stop over good flat carpark leading directly into the new forest from the pretty pub garden. Absolutely amazing food I had the duck and hubby had a well loaded burger. Wonderful cosy warm atmosphere. Accommodating for my dietary needs very tasty lush omelette mint peas and chips. Best I've had in a very very long time. Bar staff lovely friendly

We were weary travellers who were very warmly welcomed by the host and seated somewhere spacious for our large dog. Nothing was too much trouble and there were plenty of gluten free options. A lovely atmosphere as well.

Average Sunday lunch. Beef was not good quality roast potatoes, carrots and parsnips were not browned. Lacking in flavour. Dessert very small portion and the ice cream just tasted of ice. Won't be returning.

Brilliant landlord&Staff So Helpfull and Welcoming,ALL We needed

Visited this pub while on a bike ride through the forest. It was quiet but staff were really freindly and welcoming. Open beer garden with fire pit. Standard selection of drinks plus different local drinks. The beer garden had a gate straight into the forest. Great little find.
