The Crown Inn - Restaurant in Powys

We had a fantastic Sunday lunch for under £13 each at the Crown this week. It was excellent value for a generous amount of meat, veggies, and a big Yorkie. We loved the fact that it was accompanied by a huge gravy boat, which ensured an excellent gravy-to-meat ratio. Staff were also extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and we're looking forward to our next visit.

I recently visited The Crown In and had a fantastic experience. The drinks were well-crafted, and the pub had an impressive selection of both local and international brews. The staff was friendly and attentive, providing top-notch customer service throughout my visit. The cosy ambience and lively atmosphere added to the overall enjoyment. I highly recommend The Crown In for everyone! and outstanding service !

Nice little pub and does some nice food, only a small amount of tables though. Price wise it was really good.

The most darling little place! We had been on a 7 hour trek and were in desperate need of food. After trying elsewhere with no luck, the waitress here seated us, no trouble, and I am so glad she did. Never have I ever eaten such a delicious meal and dessert. I cannot fault this place. The service was fantastic, the bill for 2 meals, 2 desserts, 6 drinks and a large tip was still under £100. We plan on returning to Rhayader in the summer months and we will without-a-doubt be coming back here. Thank you so much. Fantastic dining experience. My only regret is that we didn't get the waitresses' names to pass on our joy to management.

Must say what an amazing stay and value! Can’t fault the room for the price. Others may say not perfect but for £32 for an evening I was very impressed!!! The food, drink, service and overall experience was great 😊 Pub Grub at its best

We went for a meal, table of 4. Our greeting was warm and friendly where we were shown to our table in a timely fashion. Our waitress for the evening delivered menus and took our drinks order. When taking our food order she shared a laugh and a joke as I am always a little indecisive when deciding what to have. To say we were impressed by our starters would be an understatement. Our plates were swiftly removed and shortly after our mains were delivered. Again, to our delight the quality was superb as was the size of our meals. I would highly recommend The Crown as somewhere to go to eat.

Great food! Me and my one friend both had the Duck Breast and our other friend has the Mac and Cheese. Deffinatley reccommend. Considering we couldnt get in initially then booked online we was very well accommodated at short notice during a busy friday night during our trip. Felt it was good value too 😊

Excellent customer service! I'd been travelling all day and they managed to squeeze me in for dinner despite being fully booked. It was the only vegan meal in town, so I was very grateful. The meal itself - vegan shepherd's pie - was fantastic. I popped in again briefly for a quick drink before my bus out of the area and everyone was lovely once again.

5star service and food was absolutely delicious!All homemade , I had the best bit of sirloin steak in a longtime cooked to perfection and my husband had steak and ale pie which was banging !! The sauce was to die for. Generous portions full of meat. Lovey back yard we sat in and the staff where so friendly and could not be more helpful!! Highly recommend and we r going back tomorrow! Had a lovely lunch here a few days ago. I was disappointed that they did not have the fish pie so I chose the salmon. It was beautifully cooked and the vegetables were delicious. My husband had the lamb and found it a little on the chewy side. He also had the cheese cake and said it was delicious. The staff were really friendly and the pub extremely clean.

Well cooked food, varied menu and lovely atmosphere. Staff are fantastic and we ate there every night of our stay!

Absolutely delicious meal here last night. The home made burger was beautiful. My husbands steak was cooked to perfection. Excellent childrens meal and great choice of desserts. Lovely little pub. Great staff. Looking forward to visiting again

Having read a few reviews we thought would give it ago. We where shown to a table 10 min past before anyone came for drinks order or food. Food arrived we both had sunday roast very blande tasting gravy veg was hard and not much to choose from. Pub staff seem to have a habit of returning to the bar pull down their mask to read message on their phone. Also noticed alot public walking to and from rest rooms did not where masks and where not challenged. Also staff to busy chatting to friends allowing kids to sit on the bar and pay no attention to the paying customers. Not offered any refill on drinks or a desert menu given it took 20 min to finally come over to ask was we finished this is very poor service.

I think Marrillion sang the line "lost in the confusion of another fine menu"; that was my first dilemma. Having narrowed it down to a choice of four, I went back to the list and selected the feathered steak. I followed the chef's cooking recommendation and I can say it was sublime, the best steak I have eaten for years. It was wonderful, real ales kept properly and friendly staff that were happy to respond to my birthday merriment and banter. Thoroughly recommend The Crown Inn

Both the atmosphere, food and people were absolutely incredible. The staff could not have been any friendlier and the portion sizes of food were enormous and delicious! Food prices are also extremely reasonable. Well worth every penny spent.

I had the feathered steak and was i really good cut and cooked to perfection. My other half had the steak and ale pie and said it was the best she had had. Friendly staff and good ales. Great place

We were impressed with the COVID-19 measures, and the excellent, friendly service; the staff were run off their feet but maintained a cheerful manner with all customers and couldn't do enough. More importantly, the food was excellent and amazing value for money. Large menu and perfectly cooked fresh veg. We immediately booked for the following evening too!

I ordered pork belly, it was soggy. Veg and sauce were lovely. My wife had St Davids Chicken it was lovely. Waitress was lovely. However when we had finished, our plates were cleared. No deserts offerred and no offer to refill drinks, despite them not being busy So we paid up and left.

Friendly service, generous portions of delicious food and good value for money. Good distancing and I observed the menus being sanitised after each use. Fab!

We visited the lovely restaurant and have eaten in the pub part and also the function room. Both of which had a great atmosphere. The food here is always amazing and the staff are so friendly and helpful. I couldn’t recommend this place enough. BEST place to eat! (Not including the lamb and flag of course) Matt & Family x

Came here on way to Borth as it was my partners birthday. Honest to go. Probably the best steak I have ever eaten FULL STOP. the staff were friendly and the food was banging. My partner ordered fish and chips, my daughter had sausage peas and chips, mother in law and her partner had veggie pie. But the star was the feathered steak with a side of onion rings and mushrooms. Trying to persuade them to stop on way back just so I can have it again

We ate here twice during our 4 night stay in Rhayader - luckily managing to get tables during the 'Eat out to Help Out' scheme. We were well looked after by very pleasant staff and the food we chose, lamb shank, rustic pie and sirloin steak, were delicious.

Lovely setting, really friendly and helpful waitresses and fantastic home cooked food. Great menu. Highly recommend. We wish we had visited earlier in our break and not our last night because we would have visited again!

We ate at The Crown two nights running whilst on a short break in the area and on both occasions the food from the extensive menu was superb as was the service though glad we had booked as the pub was very busy on both nights. Highly recommended.

Stayed in Rhayader for 2 nights and ate here both days, the food is amazing and the portions are ample. Cottage pie to die for! Staff are brilliant and can't do enough for you, locals are friendly and full of information. Best pub in the town.

We ate here for dinner as a group of 7 yesterday Wednesday 26th August, we were greeted at the door by a very friendly young lady who asked us to fill in the track and trace. She then lead us through to our table in the function room, another very friendly young lady the came and took our drinks order and brought them through to us. Some of our party then had starters (I tried the garlic bread and it was very good) unfortunately just after we received our starters the power to the whole town went off (it was VERY windy) the staff were very apologetic and did all they could to keep customers happy, some people left soon after and the manager said they could have their drinks for free. We were told they were waiting to see if it came back on again by 8pm. We were just about to leave just before 8 when the power suddenly came back on. Our meal was soon cooked as was first on list, we had a steak, lamb pie, scampi, pork belly, gammon and hunter’s chicken. All meals were delicious not a bad thing said about them the staff even accommodated the sporadic requests for extra chips. All in all a very nice meal and very nice staff, well done to The Crown.

We ate here with two teens and puppy on our first night in Rhyader. Extensive menu with lots of options, really incredible food. Covid aware - the staff wore masks (not sure if told to, or their choice)Only one person allowed in toilets at a time.We enjoyed a budget meal here due to Eat out to Help out.

Arrived in Rhayader early evening and was recommended Crown and had excellent dinner for the 3 of us; top class food and service with a smile.

We visited Saturday evening, 8th August. A very friendly welcome by the hostess. Explained the Covid precautions and we were pleased to see these were enforced when a group of young men came in and were immediately challenged to use handwash and social distancing. Our meal was great. My wife had the Surf and Turf which was Perf!! I had a rump steak which was cooked perfectly to my taste. There was a good menu selection. We were so impressed we came back the following evening and again our meals were top notch...The staff all seemed to be really happy and nothing seemed too much trouble. We will definitely return and recommend anyone to try it out.well done to all the staff..

Two days into the slight relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions, we went to the Crown for a meal. Nice, if unexceptional food, and such a relief after 4 months in isolation!

Cracking meal here last night. Food was lovely and service was great. Well organised for following Covid 19 rules. Dinner on Rishi meant £40 for two sirloins and all the trimmings with drinks. Excellent quality.

Asked for quiet room and were upgraded to VERY quiet apartment close by .Bar food was freshly cooked definitely home made helpful friendly staff

Stopped off by chance at the Crown for Sunday lunch, we had the house of Beef or Lamb for the roast. We both picked the Lamb and all that came with it, roast potatoes, broccoli, carrots, cabbage and cauliflower cheese. The staff were exceptionally polite and the food was the best roast we have had in a long time. I cannot recommend The Crown food and staff enough.

A warm welcome from the charming young bar tender. Toasty log fire & a relaxed atmosphere. We had two puppies with us so we ate in the restaurant which had plenty of Olde Worlde features & access to a nice garden. The vegetable lasagne was excellent....my brother was less impressed with the beef (overcooked/tasteless & grey), the cauliflower cheese was inedible, tasted like sick! The prawn cocktail was generous, strange choice of garnish. Plenty of food but think quality not quantity. Really good service. We enjoyed the experience.

Went here for dinner with the family, very cosy and helpful staff. I had a delicious curry with rice and chips and extras. Portion was huge and very tasty. Great pub grub.

I love this place and lets be fair there are plenty to choose from in the town, but the food is awesome the beer perfectly kept. Just off the main hughstreet but would totally recommend. The menu is simple but that just means they do it right the first time. Not to be missed.

Very traditional oak beamed pub with a great atmosphere. Eaten here twice recently. Once off the bar menu and another time from the Xmas menu. The food is very ordinary and a bit pricey because it isn’t anything special. Okay food very much improved by lovely staff. Especially the kitchen staff. Although young they definitely made an effort. Lots of smiles and warmth.

We booked at little break away from work as we both work long hour's. Stayed at the Penralley House bed and breakfast. Too early to check in so we came to the Crown, wow what a place..... fabulous friendly staff, very welcoming. Beautiful home cooked food. Lovely atmosphere. We would highly recommend.

Don't stay if you want some sleep. Ignore opening hours, bar served till 1.14am Saturday/Sunday when we were there. This would not be a problem were it not that you can hear every word of conversations as there is only a floor board between you and the noisy low ceilinged bar. Then of course there is the music which might as well be playing in the bedroom. Final conversation (full of expletives) finished at 02.20 on the Sunday morning. Would never stay there again. If you have children don't consider staying under hany circumstances.

The Crown will always be my first choice when it comes to booking the first overnight stop when I do the Trans Cambrian Way on my MTB. Lovely rooms, great food in the bar and bike friendly and friendly staff. Highly recommended 👍

After a long day walking round Elan Valley it was a great relief to stop off here for a drink and some hot food. Good menu, lovely food, good selection behind bar. Friendly staff. Only negative was lots of tables reserved, but it was Saturday afternoon, so ended up round a small table up the corner. Top tip, even though they don't start serving food until 5pm, you can order before then and you'll get it pretty sharpish once 5 o'clock comes.

Always enjoy this pub when we visit Rhayader and the food is excellent . Hopefully we will visit here again soon

We didn’t book but still found we could walk in and find one of the table that weren’t reserved. The staff were all friendly, great food which was fast at being served to us. I definitely recommend the rustic lamb pie as it was delicious- lots of meat in the pie and great mash potato, vegetables cook well too. The prices were reasonable. A lovely find and will definitely return when we are around this area again.

Came here after seeing their EHO food rating via (scores on the doors) 4 stars rating amd I'd say 1xnearer 5 as the food . toilets . service and cleanliness of the pub was in this bracket.

Dropped in on our journey from South Wales to North Wales. Had drinks and soup. Very tasty food and staff very helpful and friendly. Would recommend a visit.

We stayed nearby for four nights - and just kept coming back each evening to this welcoming pub. The locals and the staff were very friendly, the food was magnificent and even our springer spaniel was quiet and very happy in the 'back restaurant' specially set aside for those with canines. The menu was very varied and everything I ordered tasted delicious - the onion gravy with the lambs liver and bacon main course was outstanding. The lovely chef wouldn't reveal the recipe so I will drive the 6 hours back to Wales again just for another taste!.

Popular pub with a good food menu that does traditional pub fare. Meals were good and reasonably priced but without really standing out in any way. Service was fine.

We visited on a bank holiday weekend, they were very pleasant and accommodating the food, we all had scampi was very good beer was tasty and varied. A nice pub garden. We will be more than happy to go back again. Has a food standard 4 rating

Visited here on our way through , bar lady was Friendly , we were able to order prior to the 12 o clock opening for food which meant we didn’t wait too long for food. Sunday roast came and there was plenty and it was tasty :) not a posh place but really nice and friendly with good tasty roasts :)

Found this place on a Sunday evening when most of the rest of the village had closed or stopped serving food. We had a delicious meal with some good ales. The music and atmosphere were great too, with a laid back vibe. Worth noting that meal times seem to be a bit flexible when compared to what is advertised, but worth a wait! Steak and ale pie was delicious.

Good food, nice service, the chips were lovely! Parking can be a bit of an issue nearby at busy times but somewhere always pops up eventually. Staff were friendly and very accommodating. We will be back.

Popped in just in the nick of time at around 7pm on a Tuesday evening. Nice cosy atmosphere with a good variety on the menu. Food was freshly cooked & portions were large. Ribs, lasagne, burgers steak were all excellent accompanied by great chips & fresh salad. Would definitely recommend & will stop here again - I’d even phone ahead for a table as it looked popular

Friendly staff. Two lunches for £12. Basic pub grub but well cooked - peas actually had flavour. Draft beer. Just what we needed as a break during a long journey.

Ordered the Cajun butterfly chicken this evening, when dining with my colleagues, whilst we were staying in the town on business.

Very disappointing. Will not recommend to anyone as the good was very poor. Chilli con carne has actually made me feel quite nauseous. Too much oil all round.

We dropped in to the Crown one Sunday night in July 2019. Friendly service and good food and beer - especially the Reverend bitter! Nice outside beer garden. In the lovely town centre of Rhayader.

We have been coming here for years and now that we actually live in Rhayader, are always confident when we bring friends and family here, that they will have a good experience.

We were staying near Rhayader for a few days, and tried the Crown on our first night (after leaving the Lamb & Flag across the road - see my review!). The Crown was a great improvement: busy for a start, and much more welcoming. Beer (Brains) was good and the food was also very good and generous portions. In fact we went 2 nights in a row before venturing further afield.

We arrived to a prebooked table (by our host at penralley house), served quickly and both had an enjoyable meal. Surprised at other comments regarding food as throughout our meals (yes we had pudding) we were asked each time by the staff if the food was acceptable which it was - more than acceptable at a decent price - well done to the staff at crown inn - if we ever return we will eat here again.

If you want meat that you can eat in your steak & ale pie then try somewhere else because the pie that I had was so full of gristle and tough meat that it was inedible. The mashed potatoes were lumpy and the veg was not 'Al Dente' it was uncooked.The worst pub meal I have had the misfortune to eat.

A wide choice of meals available and very accommodating with regards to food allergies and intolerances. A good selection of beers, ciders and spirits. Very helpful and friendly staff.

With an excellent variety of food on offer. The portions are generous and tasty. Good honest British pub grub. Friendly and welcoming staff. 5 out 5 from me.

The menu was extensive, which is not always a good sign, however the food is cooked from local ingredients and was delicious.

Four of us stopped here for dinner, wasn't impressed. 3 of the dinners were very dry, still eatable, but will not be going back

My husband and I were using Trip Advisor looking for somewhere to eat. We decided on The Crown. We were greeted by a friendly and efficient member of staff wbo quickly found us a table. The food and drink were excellent and reasonably priced. No room for dessert! Would recommend.

Love it. Large menu, food is cooked to perfection and there's a very good variety of beers etc behind the bar. Always busy which is a sign of how good they are.

We popped here for some food around half 5 and must say were very disappointed. I had the lamb shank, I found it chewy and a little dry. I thought the shank was over priced for the quality. My wife had the lasagne and hers was also dry, overcooked and had no tomatoes in it. Very bizarre.

Husband and I staying in Rhayader for 1 night, the owner of our BnB recommended The Crown. Pub is small but perfectly formed. Tables and comfy chairs for the just drinkers, plenty of space for diners. We were seated at 730 (had booked a table), orders placed at bar by 740, food got to us around 810 which we were very happy with, don't consider that a long wait at all especially as food is cooked to order and the pub was busy. MASSIVE portions! I was thrilled by how much actually as I do love my food, and the prices then were exceptional value for money. I had the cajun chicken, Hubby had stuffed chicken breast. Cannot fault the food, either of us. Beautiful flavours, chicken was deliciously moist and perfectly cooked. The two lasses who served us were friendly and polite. We'll definitely be back next time we're staying

Being hungry after a long walk we popped in for food I’m fully aware it’s a pub but was expecting better. Food took an age to arrive burger pink all the way through and luke warm. My wife’s lasagne was indescribable we took a while to work out it was lasagne as so flavourless and lack of pasta was trying to pass as cottage pie. We didn’t complain as just wanted some calories at this point and honestly I’ll eat anything! The bar itself was filled with local Sunday drinkers who had been there a while. Again no issue as I have frequented many a pub but didn’t need to have conversations about drugs and relationships within earshot as I eat. The final nail was paid and left and realised I had been charged for an extra drink! Not rushing back.

Went for a meal with friends . Had the hunters chicken which was more than enough great portion size and presented well . Staff friendly and busy atmosphere . Would come here again .

We visited Rhayader last weekend and quickly found the Crown on our first night. If I am honest we had a drink and left and visited a few more pubs in the town to try them out and look for somewhere for dinner for the evening.

Had a lovely meal again at the Crown. The meal was topped off with an amazing Irish Coffee made by Hannah. Her first apparently.

This is a really nice little pub and has great service and friendly staff. The food was ok, but pretty average we think. We would leave 3.5 stars if we could

My husband and I were actually having a drink trying to waste some time before heading elsewhere for dinner. The kitchen was open and we were hungry so we decided to order dinner here instead. Both dishes were delicious, he had the lamb shank and I had the lamb pie. Great quality meat and really friendly service. As we'd settled in for the evening the pub soon turned into a hot spot for locals and visitors which only added to the great atmosphere. Not your average Monday night! Definitely would recommend!

Pub was really busy and only called for a drink. However after seeing a lasagne served to the table next to us we couldn’t resist - it looked fab!

Though very busy staff were extremely friendly and we were shown to table straight away and within minutes we had ordered and were enjoying a lovely cold glass of white.....our gorgeous meal was brought out ..beatifully cooked and presented by steve the chef and the chicken in wine leeks and bacon came with a fantatic selection of six different vegatables ...our waitor for the eve was very attentive and professional and we were shocked to hear it was his first night !!!

We had dinner at The Crown, Rhayader, good food, wonderful service, couldn't be more accommodating, a proper pub with a great atmosphere. Definitely will return.

Met with friends and we had booked a table. As there were nine of us we had the function room. Out of the main bustle we were able to talk unencumbered and never wanted for a drink. The service was first class and the staff are a real credit to the place.

I booked for four of us Saturday night, glad we never just turned up as they were very busy, was told there could be a wait for food but it never took any longer then anywhere else. You don't go hungry, plenty of food on your plate you fill you have eaten, friendly lady's behind the bar, will use this place again when in area.
