The Crown in Monmouthshire

Lovely pub for a drop-in drink in the evening (would be wonderful views of Skirrid in the evening in summer but not early April sadly), but also had a meal there this evening. Wonderful special starters (huge portion of whitebait with home made tartare sauce and asparagus with Parma ham, poached egg and vinaigrette), followed by delicious monkfish wrapped in prosciutto with really interesting veg and creamy sauce, plus a flavour packed home made cottage pie with seasonal veg. We shared a heavenly dessert of pistachio semifreddo with a fabulous chocolate sauce laced with Amaretto. Wine was good, if a little pricey, but service was terrific. Thank you to Amy, Nick, Massimiliano and all the team at the Crown Inn - highly recommended!

Booked in advance as read good reviews and was Easter Sunday. Pub lovely, service good but must admit was disappointed with the food. 18 pound for a lamb dinner which I don't mind paying but when one slice is just fat really put me off my meal. Lukewarm meat and roasties followed by lukewarm veggies .. was really looking forward to our visit here but was really disappointed.

We absolutely loved this pub! So much so we visited 4 times during our 4 day stay in Abergavenny! We sampled drinks , breakfast , lunch and dinner! ALL of the food was absolutely gorgeous! And I’m fussy!! The pub has such a great vibe and we always managed to bag a seat in the dog friendly area next to the log fire which was perfect! All of the staff were brilliant and so friendly . The food choice was brilliant and I can’t sing its praises enough. I had the salmon pasta with vodka and I enjoyed it so much I wanted to go back the next day and have it again! When we got there the next day , on Friday, it was only just gone 5 so they were still serving the afternoon menu but we were really chuffed as we saw they had fish & chips and we’d been craving that too so both ordered that and it was one of the best fish and chips we’ve ever had, including the gorgeous homemade mushy peas! We sampled the traditional Welsh breakfasts this morning but were also tempted by several other dishes on the breakfast menu . My god, they were gorgeous! A generous portion size which we love as we’re both big eaters and absolutely divine, you could tell all the ingredients were locally sourced and so full of flavour! Even the Americanos and cream were perfect! 👌 We will be back again to experience your absolute gem of a pub in the summer and hopefully get to dine Al fresco in your lovely outdoor seating area…..possibly with a wood fired pizza from the oven we spotted ….? Booked a table earlier this week for an early Valentine's meal. The building is lovely as you pull up and its even nicer inside. We had 2 starters, 2 mains and shared a dessert. The food was superb. It was beautifully presented and all the dishes tasted so good. Would have no hesitation recommending The Crown to anyone.

Nice food, drink and atmosphere. Kindly given a table as needed to catch a train so gentleman who made reservation was very happy with this as he needed the table sooner. Would have given more stars if waiting staff had not served another party who turned up after us and said to them "I'll serve you first as you're in a hurry", whilst we were made to wait so didn't have time for dessert as we had to had a train to catch. Very disappointing service.

We had heard and read good reviews about this restaurant so booked as a party of 6. Firstly I must say that all the staff were extremely welcoming and polite but we were very disappointed with the food. I had whitebait starter which was overcooked. My friend had a starter of baked pear with brie and I was surprised how small this was. Another had croquette potatoes which she said was nice and others had pate, which I am told was strong and bitter. For main course I had beef which came plated with a Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes. A plate of vegetables arrived which included 2 pieces of parsnip, chantenay carrots, red cabbage, and sprouts. Cauliflower cheese was an extra £4 for a portion for 2. To be fair they bought extra vegetables when requested. The carrots were fine but unfortunately the sprouts were so overcooked that they were mushy. The parsnips were white, and soft. The Yorkshire pudding was so overcooked you could crumble it. In fact when we left we noticed other people had taken their yorkshires off their plates and placed them on their tables! We were asked at the end of the main course if everything was ok and I did pass on my comments about the sprouts and Yorkshire puddings but was told we should have said when asked. Problem was until then we had not been asked! We didn’t order desserts and when we asked for the bill no recompense was offered for our disappointment. We will unfortunately not return but I hope that this was a blip and their food will match their service in the future.

We've eaten here twice in the last couple of weeks. First was an excellent Sunday lunch. Then mid-week we had a superb rib-eye steak and steak pie. The stock with the pie was delicious. Also a choice of three well kept ales and fine wines. Large car park to the rear.

It was a fantastic meal, and I great recommendations from the waitress. She was very friendly and helpful. A great find!

Haven't been here for a number of year's but decided to visit for birthday treat, excellent decision, pub vibrant and busy very nice staff attentive and helpful, food is sublime, something for all tastes, can't wait to return.

We were looking for a dog-friendly pub for a late lunch after a walk in the Brecon's. The Crown made us all feel very welcome, and the Lazy Afternoon menu was fantastic. We were also lucky as a few of the lunch specials were still on. The food was exquisite, and this will absolutely be our regular stop off on future Welsh walks!

Popped in after a wet and soggy evening g walk in the beautiful Black Mountains around Abergavenny. The welcome was warm, the array of local ales was refreshing to see and the specials board kangaroo burger was outstanding.

I was passing through on a Monday & decided to stop by for some lunch. The menu was good with some traditional classics and other nice options but I went for the steak as I often do in a lot of places and it was great. The service was really attentive and friendly, and the views are beautiful. I’d also mention I was solo and didn’t feel awkward chilling out here alone at all. It’s dog friendly too in a section. Would definitely recommend.

This was a real treat for us. We found the menu online and it looked great, the previous great reviews and the food pictures swayed us to give it a go. Not disappointed. The staff were polite and courteous, the food... excellent!! The menu wasn't huge, but the portions were, and the quality was top notch, really. Well cooked homely food. I would like the pub to be my local. We were delighted with the beef cheek and chicken pie! Highly recommended for very good homely food!

A beautiful pub with amazing food and beer

We were on holiday in the area for a few days, for our one meal out we chose this pub due to the very good reviews… the reviews did not back up the food whatsoever and this is so someone else doesn’t get let down by poor food like we did. My girlfriend had the garlic mushrooms on foccacia bread, came with 2 very small cubes of foccacia on the side of the bowl and very chewy mushrooms in the middle of a bowl, nothing like what you would expect that starter to be. I had the Patatas Bravas, nothing overly bad to say, but just very average for nearly a £10 starter. We thought it was just a hiccup and waited for the main. The 2 chicken and mushroom pies turned up, again looking nothing like pies, but more like a thai green curry soup in the middle, with some chips on the side and a bit of pastry on the other. The food tasted okay and was delivered very quickly but overall very disappointed for a £70 meal

We visited today for Sunday lunch today, booking was easy and all staff were extremely friendly and attentive throughout our visit. The roast was good, although for around £17 each (+£4 for sharing cauliflower cheese) I would expect better attention to extra touches advertised in the menu. We had the pork and there was virtually no crackling and the potatoes were below average. That said, the meat was extremely flavourful and tender, although it seems the kitchen staff are letting down otherwise incredible service. Would recommend for the service alone but would expect more at these prices.

Visited here Xmas eve for dinner. Was very busy but we were seated quickly. We enjoyed the lamb curry and the chicken and truffle pie. All served piping hot, service excellent. Delicious.

We had the pleasure to dine at The Crown last Saturday. All our dishes were well presented and delicious, but the slow cooked beef cheeks deserve a special mention as it was absolutely exceptional dish. The service was very professional especially from Gabriel who mostly served our table. The place was very busy but the waiter was very attentive. We are very fortunate to have few lovely restaurants in Abergavenny, but The Crown have just became my favourite out of them all.

First time in ages I'd eaten at The Crown. I was not disappointed. Exemplary food (particularly the Beef Cheek) surpassed expectations. The rest of the table all agreed. Fantastic evening in a great setting. Thank you to all at The Crown.
