The Cross Keys in Scottish Borders

We love Weatherspoon pubs so when we were in Peebles we thought that it would be good for lunch. Sadly we only got drinks despite having two trips to the bar everything we asked for appeared to be not available. Staff told us only 2 staff were on. Tables were not cleared everywhere. So we went to another bar the county Inn which was much better.

Had a few nights room was clean but damp damaged walls tv didn't work had to fix it... breakfast was cold for 2 mornings so walked up to the pud up the road for breafast on the 3rd morning... staff are nice and pub section is lovely

Older building with old building charm. Staff super helpful. Cheap food and drink. Fair amount of vegan options. Centrally located.

Although this pub is quite dark and a bit dingey, plus smells a bit damp at the back, the food was very tasty and incredibly inexpensive which is much needed in this day and age! Two halloumi and sweet chilli wraps plus coffees with free refills, just over £13! Amazing! The staff were very pleasant as well. It’s just a shame I dislike the political stance of the man who owns the company!

Went for a family meal on Thursday 6th July as it was Curry night. Lo and behold when we selected curries from the menu there were none available. It was only 1:00pm. Clearly couldn’t organise a piss up in a brewery.

Still my favourite Wetherspoons pub. Staff always helpful with good service. Food is as expected but great value, Scottish breakfast very good. I am never rushed and feel very comfortable in nice surroundings.

Arrived at 12 noon on a Thursday. Thursday is advertised as a speciality curry day. The only issue was that there was no Jalfrezie, Madras or Tilka. Basically no curry available. Wetherspoons at its best, starts with a bang and quickly becomes a damp squib. If it’s any comfort the ham, egg and chips was just about edible

Had a couple of beers here when in peebles. Sat outside on a lovely sunny day. A great spot. Beers were good and so was the service.

We was going to have dinner, but fryers was down, so limited food. I don't eat pizza so we had to find some where else to eat.

Do not stay here. We spent the night in room 5. The wall was covered in mould. The bathroom was filthy and the beds moved around the whole night. Spoke with the manager and got told to book somewhere else then.we would have but there was no availability and I was not going to drive 1.5 hours back to Glasgow. We were told as a gesture we would get breakfast. In the morning no breakfast was given at all had to pay on top of 85 for a room which was not fit for purpose. Avoid at all cost. Even the bar is filthy glasses left lying about for hours on end

Visited here for drinks and a seat at the front in the sun. Very pleasant. Staff were helpful and attentive. Decided to return that evening for a meal. A few things were off the menu but there was still plenty of choice. The place was much busier in the evening with all age ranges. We were happy with our food and the service we received. The staff did seem to be rushed of their feet however but they coped well. Maybe they were short staffed that evening.

Second time here and we enjoyed it.it’s not flash, not posh but it’s a great place to sit outside for a quiet drink in the sun. Also how can you complain about £6.33 for a pint of IPA and a glass of wine. I read this is up for sale, I hope it’s gets a buyer as it’s def got potential.

Normally a full range of real ales to choose from , but the past week it's been ridiculous. No ales on , rude manager and queuing for ages due to lack of staff , dirty plates all over the place, back beer garden closed despite the sun beating down

Awful experience. It started with placing our orders at the bar. We wanted 4x fish & chips but they had no fish. And the kids ordered orange juice. But that has run out. We ended up ordering Mediterranean salad with haloumi. And waited and waited to be served. Only to find out they ran out but failed to let us know. It all ended with a partial refund after the waitress was rude to us and the manager stepped in. We are local but will never go there again.

Never got straws with our drinks, very disappointed. Chips were cold, burgers were mixed up (no bun), very frustrating. There was a bite in my friends burger, mildly annoying. Service was good as the waiter was cheery and polite as well as very pleasant to look at. Would come again just for the staff.

First time here for a Sunday breakfast, we liked ordering from the table via the app. The cups for our drinks arrived within 5 mins so we could make a start, we did then seem to wait a very long time for the breakfast itself,...

First time we’ve been here and it was a nice surprise. It’s nothing like your average Wetherspoons, more of a pub atmosphere. Great value for money and good service. What more can you ask for.

Had a two night stay recently. I found my room comfortable enough, but not particularly cheap at £169, especially when you consider breakfast is an extra charge, and the hour-long wait prior to check in was an irritation I could've done without. Especially galling given...

Nice atmosphere with friendly and efficient staff serving good value tasty food. What more can you ask for! Toilets exceptionally clean too.

Staff, rooms, location and facilities all excellent value for money. spent a great weekend there with friends.

A friends get together but the food was disappointing. There was a lack of options from the menu and one of the meals was served cold which had to be returned.

Popped in for lunch as a family, pub was warm and inviting. Usual spoons menu and offerings, staff were friendly. Food was as expected. Downside, tables are a little cramped in and no facility to change a child

Visited for drinks recently. Ordered via the App and waited 15 minutes for our drinks. People who came in after us were half way through their drinks before we even received ours. Staff need more training and they also need to smile more!

My friends and I popped in here for a quick bit to eat when visiting Peebles.You know what to expect when you visit a Weatherspoons. It's affordable and the food is served really quickly. The staff are all polite and helpful as you'd come to expect. There's a seating area outside but inside it's a bit dark and cramped. Well priced and well served. Just a bit dark!

We had our evening meal here and as you would expect at Wetherspoons, the menu was wide and varied and the drinks selection even more so.

Busy place attracting a wide variety of age groups (discovered trendy young users have called it 'Spoons' not Wetherspoon) the staff coped well with our difficulty using the online food ordering.

What a lovely place -so quaint. Clean and all covid stuff in place. Good food. BUT a little understaffed all staff looked overwhelmed and this was a Friday lunchtime! Hope more staff arrived.

Only had beer here on a couple of nights over the weekend. The service was quick and friendly. We did not eat here, but it is clean so we would have if we hadn't found other restaurants. There is a very good beer garden at the rear

Wehterspoons App not working, payment system not working. Customer service non existent. First and last visit I am afraid.

Popped in for a quick pint. Took over 45 minutes to arrive. Staff kept turning up to my table with drinks I didn't order. That wasn't surprising considering there was 20/25 youths table hopping and shouting and being very rude. I felt sorry for the old couple trying to enjoy their meal amongst it all. Who would think we've just came out of a lockdown. Staff were running around like blue arsed flies. Absolute mayhem. I'm getting a little long in the tooth but these 'youths' are getting way younger. I have late teens children myself and they all looked and acted younger. I thought bar staff had to challenge 25 when serving alcohol??Avoid at all costs unless you have filled up on diazepam and really need a watered down pint. Oh, and have lots of time to kill twiddling your thumbs waiting on your drink.

One of the best things about this place is the friendly professional staff. Good pub food arrives quickly and is great value for money.

Staff were really friendly, chatty and helpful whilst observing social distancing. Food was nice. Definitely recommend.

someone needs to let staff know about COVID 19, no track and trace done until I mentioned it when almost finished eating. told to help ourselves to extra coffee from the machine -no wait, we were told to stay in our seats and a member of staff would do that for us, or so we were told on the previous 3 visits, so just couldn't be bothered this time? not happy with same member of staff stuffing her face in front of customers, no hand washing and having such a loud conversation with her colleague (the manager!) that I would class is as shouting and almost got out of my seat to tell her to shut up, I did not want to hear about her private life. then when we were leaving did she reply to our goodbye, no of course not!

Booked this last minute to get away for a break. Didn’t really know what to expect but it far surpassed our expectations. It was Spotless and the rooms were spacious and beds were so comfy. We had room 1 which was lovely my only criticism would be it had a disabled bathroom/wet room and once you had a shower the floor was soaking. A floor mop would have been a welcome addition to the room. All other items you could want were available. We had lunch and breakfast in the restaurant which again didn’t disappoint a great overnight stay. Our friend stayed in room 2 which was slightly bigger and had a bathroom rather than wet room which I would recommend.

It was our second visit here and we were not disappointed. The lady waiting on could not have done enough for us. We were struggling with the app so she kindly took our orders at the table.Another nice Scottish breakfast and lovely coffees.We will be returning.

This is my confirmation of my booking today at cross keys Peebles 3125811639 ,, they are telling me at 12-15 am that booking.com has totally messed up and they can’t accommodate us shocking disgusting way to treat any customer !!!!Do not book a room here you will get let down

We would like to review our emmazing service by Emma. She always has an attitude of a glass half Fulton. If I had to cross keys with anyone in the future I would choose her. Once I was finished her breakfast I was very Fulton. The mushrooms were Emmpecable. I have to Emmitt that I wasn't Emxpecting much but was Empecabily surprise by her service.

Had a lovely day in Peebles then came here for something to eat. You had to book it on your phone app which suited us okay but may not suit everyone as not all people have phones capable of downloading the app. Luckily we do!!The staff were friendly enough and surroundings pleasant with both inside and outdoor seating.The food came not too long after ordering and the food was lovely. When you wanted more drinks then you just tapped on the drinks wanted and it was brought to the table with no problems at all.The place has a disabled toilet with easy access which was good as otherwise the other main toilets are upstairs.We had a lovely chilled meal before heading home again. We didn’t realise till it was pointed out to us that you can stay over here too as they bedrooms. This is always good to know as it’s in perfect location to access the shops, nature walks etc and the rooms look value for money.I think we would come back for a chilled weekend, staying over and having a wander around Peebles then back to the pub for drinks and of course food.This place is definitely a little diamond of a find as it’s set off the main high street we had missed knowing it was there at first. But now we know we will look forward to trying out staying a couple nights since it’s closer than the other hotels we usually stay in. A little change is a good thing. Stay Safe

First and last time trying the Traditional breakfast, the beans were stone cold, toast cold, burnt black pudding and the bacon tasted like charcoal. Staff were extremely rude when people were asking for salt, sugar etc. There's a sign at the front door saying 'wait here to be seated' yet no one there to greet you, instead the staff are standing at the bar chatting. Thank goodness it was half price.

We were advised service is via the app but neither my wife or I had our phones and we couldnt be served, I understand the need for safety etc but not to offer an alternative is just refusing custom, a nearby pub accommodated us without their app service and were happy to take our money

Visited beer garden for drinks. Friendly staff and Test and Protect rules observed. It is a Wetherspoon venue. Table service only and mask wearing indoors using facilities.

Stumbled on this pub tucked a away on a day trip to Peebles.The staff were helpful and attentive and the Scottish breakfast was delicious. Unlimited coffees and great table service.This is one of the nicest Wetherspoons we have been to and will definitely return.

Great prices and excellent quality food in Peebles. The competition must really hate them as who can complete with Weatherspoons ? I tour UK on my motorcycle and always stay overnight where they have pub as I have never been disappointed....well done indeed !!

We stopped in on New Years Day. The pub is surprisingly large. The outdoor space would be tremendous to use in good weather. The food was just ok.

The building looks interesting on the outside but inside it is non inspiring and basic. We were disappointed in the decor and seating etc inside. Just a basic pub with no character.

Plentiful full Scottish breakfast, excellent value for money, good quick service and free coffee refills, what's not to like.

Average food at average prices. We enjoyed a family lunch with four adults and two children. The food was as expected from a typical Wetherspoons. The waitress was friendly and helpful and the meal was of reasonable value.

We had an evening meal during a holiday break in the Borders. As a Wetherspoons, we knew what to expect, and, as usual, it was good value for money. The option of meals with a free drink is always appealing, and we particularly liked the desserts. I had a huge plate of fresh fruit with ice cream for only £2.75, while my wife had Bramley apple pie with custard - again a huge portion.

Can't argue with the prices. Decent food. Bar staff are sometimes in a grump, other then that decent place to have a meal in Peebles.

We meant to dine across the street, but it was closed. The menu here looked good, so we tried it. Very friendly man at the bar informed us that we could sit wherever we liked and that could order from him. We had a huge chicken sandwich, chips, soda, jacket potato, salad, pint of lager. 12 pounds. Very good food and fast service

We booked 2 nights for a family member celebration, so wanted to pay in full prior to the date as we would be out of the country when they arrived. Told this was impossible, couldn't access booking until the date!!! Wouldn't or couldn't accept an advance deposit. Having worked in hospitality for over 20 years, I know that this is absolute nonsense. Attitude was disgusting, no compromise offered, no good will gesture.clearly not interested in the business, therefore I cancelled the booking on the spot, their attitude was "fine, you do that, if you can't be bothered!" Never in 20 years of hospitality have I felt the need to complain/comment until now. How these people are in jobs dealing with the public is beyond my comprehension, your staff training needs looked at & also the booking technology you have in place, if your staff cannot access a booking until the date of arrival for advanced deposits etc.

Couldn't fault the food we ordered and we didn't wait too long, nor did it arrive straight after ordering. The queues at the bar for food and drinks were very long and it looked like the place could do with more staff. The beer garden was a lovely area to sit out in the sun. Would happily visit again.

Sunday lunch, excellent value, decent quality, good service, good real ale, and all in an old coaching inn which is over 300 years old. Perfect.

Really enjoyed visiting the Cross Keys a number of times whilst visiting Peebles in Scotland. They provide a good range of beer and a reasonable menu, staff are friendly and work hard, they were very under staffed at busy times and many tables remained uncleared attracting wasps which caused the usual arm waving panic. Lovely old pub with plenty of seating, would recommend a visit if not only for the great value drinks.

Had a really good steak, and pint of Punk on the steak day (Tuesday). My partner and her sister chose off the standard menu. All three meals were excellent, steak was perfect.

We have stayed in the past and enjoyed our stay and food, but recently it was a disappointment. The evening meal and the breakfast was of a very disappointing standard, the manager was not interested in his customers or the standard of service or the food served.

An excellent choice for a reasonably priced meal. Drinks very well priced with helpful staff. The meals ideal for taking children with plentiful outdoor facilities.

Stayed here for one night on a tour of Scotland. It’s a Wetherspoons Hotel and pub. It’s on a one way street with no parking outside. Peebles is a very small town with a handful of shops and bars. It has a outside area in the front and also at the rear.

Was sat outside almost on the street on a lovely summer day with our 2 well behave small dogs. My wife went inside to order our lunch and a well deserved pint. All of a sudden I was approached by staff to say I was not welcome at the cross keys with our dogs. My wife had just payed for the order and the pints had been poured only for the staff to say sorry you have dogs so here is your money back give us back the drink.

Stayed in the Cross Keys for the night. Food was typical Wetherspoons, but was nice. A nice selection of beers. Stayed in a room for a night, a big comfy room, bed was a bit hard for me, but the wife liked it. Sat in the back beer garden for while which was nice.

Visited a few times during our stay in Peebles. A fairly standard Wetherspoons, but compared to the ones at home, incredibly quiet. Has limited seating outside at the front which catches the evening sun and a lovely beer garden to the rear which unfortunately doesn't. A bit dark inside which lets the place down. Anyway the highlight of the Cross Keys was the bar staff. They were attentive, friendly and engaging. Most un-Wetherspoons from my experience of lazy, distracted and surly staff at our local spoons.

A very well kept Spoons with clean tables and establishment. Friendly attentive service and a good choice of ales. Also one of the best beer gardens that you’ll find in the Borders. Very affordable prices and a tasty cheap and cheerful meal. If you are aware of the Wetherspoons philosophy you will be aware that’s it’s not fine dining or anything luxurious, but you should find, pleasant staff and prices at a very reasonable price. Will be returning and can recommend

In the south of Scotland amongst the rolling hills of the Southern Uplands lies the undeniably lovable town of Peebles. There are a surprising number of culinary offerings for a town of merely 8,000, not the least of which is The Cross Keys restaurant connected to a hotel of the same name.

What a find! Lovely room, comfortable bed, light and airy. Had an evening meal, place was packed! Great value, fast service, tasty curry, no complaints. In the morning we had a cooked breakfast, very good, staff efficient and friendly. Thoroughly recommended.

We sat with our dog at a table in the outdoor courtyard at the front of the pub on the street. There were no signs to tell us this was not allowed. We went to get drinks and ordered food. After 40 mins (during which no staff had been out in the courtyard) a member of staff walked by and we had to leave with our dog. When I said we had already ordered food, he said we would be refunded. A really awful experience, terrible handling of the situation (even though we have discovered subsequently that it is company policy) - no apology about the lack of notice. In the end they let us keep our vegetarian wrap to take away which was tasteless anyway.

Avoid avoid avoid! Took the family for breakfast. Raw eggs, egg shell in food, service was absolutely awful. Long wait. Didn’t get replacement food so decided to leave. Staff were rude and obnoxious!

Fantastic value from this bar, drinks are cheap, as is the food. Service/Food/Drinks all 10/10. Somewhere we always go when in the area for a meal or afternoon snack and a drink.

Went here Easter weekend, it's typical weatherspoon fare, nice big pub though with couple of large outdoor areas, food was OK and usual drink deals on offer, wouldn't put anyone off visiting it as staff were friendly and attentive

This Wetherspoons was ideal for a late Saturday afternoon in the sun. The rear outside seating area had some seats in the shade which suited us. The curry & burger we ordered were enjoyed by us both. Great real ales and the usual great value. The staff were friendly and attentive and a credit to the company.

spent a few hours in the cross keys for lunch and a few drinks, this is an excellent venue with a really good atmosphere, there was a nice mix of people , the food was first class and very reasonable, a cracking beer garden to the rear

We had recalled this place from a visit 3 years previously, it was busy then and busy now, loads of people enjoying food and plenty others drinking.

Lovely food and great service - will be back soon. Loved my nachos and the steak pie. No room for pudding - next time

Had a night in Peebles, Cross Keys is a great find off the main street, food was lovely and great selection of very reasonably priced wine and drinks. Heard it is up for sale, such a shame as its a lovely place

Visited here today for a bite to eat got the special of the day burger and fries husband got ribs onion rings and fries the fries and onion were soggy reheats that had been cooked in them same oil could taste onion of the fries very disappointed as have visited Wetherspoons up and down the country and never had a complaint staff were pleasant as always . Do not order burger and fries special

staff excellent three lads working that night 19 feb 2019 could not have been more helpful, food was very tasty and plentiful wine and beer good price will go back regular on next visit, keep up the good work lads.

Good pub with good atmosphere - though only had drinks this time

We spent time between Christmas and New Year up in Peebles at the Hydro and one afternoon decided to wander into town to find a pub for a beer and a sandwich. My grandparents spent their honeymoon in this pub / hotel c. 80 years ago, so it was top of the list to have a look in and explore. The decor was disappointing - I understand that Wetherspoons do not have a reputation for "oldy worldy" but this traditional pub interior has been converted into what appears to be something like a modern all-look-the-same pub, and all the ambience, class and tradition has been stripped out of it. Adise from the decor the food was typical of Wetherspoons - good value given the price point, and filled a hole, but nothing to write home about. We shared a platter (skewers, ribs etc) and the plate could have done with some colour variation or veg - everything was a shade of brown / orange (although this was our choice of meal, so not the fault of the pub). In general we had a good visit, I just wish the pub felt more authentic and traditional.

I really don’t know what all the poor reviews are all about ,I think people forget this is primarily a pub with basic food and cheap drink .I listened to someone moan because they had to go to the coffee machine themself !(happy with the free refills no doubt)
