The owner does not always serve food! We asked and he created a menu especially for us! The scallops with a homemade sauce were superb as was the lamb tagine. I thought the dessert of marrons with creme fraiche would be terrible but the combination worked! Really good choice of wines but very different. We had one from Georgia! Just the four of us ate, a bit like being in a supper club, a truly fantastic evening.

Had a wonderful dinner here on 2nd October - which sadly will be the last. Alan and Joyce Craigie, who have run The Creel for more than 25 years, have sold it and moved to Inverness. A sad day for lovers of good food in Orkney (whether resident or visiting.) It's unclear whether it will reopen as a restaurant, or a B&B next year, or will become a private house. Whichever it is, I wish the new owners luck. But the Craigies have gone, and The Creel as we know and love it is now a glorious memory.

We stayed at the Creel Restaurant, which has a few bedrooms as well as a restaurant. We ate wonderfully, starting everyday with wonderful fresh home-crafted muesli - best I have ever had - and a choice of delicious fish, eggs, or traditional cooked breakfasts. Unusually good kippers. Then in the evening after long days in remarkably good weather - blowy but with sun and racing clouds and not much rain, we returned and relaxed in our comfortable rooms and had a cup of tea and read a book. Then the big moment each day - to go down and eat the marvellous dinners. We decided to eat mainly fish - which was always wonderful and original without being overdone or 'messed up' in any way. On the last day I tried the pork dish and this too was extraordinarily good and made me slightly regret that I had not indulged in meat earlier in the week. Our hosts, Mr and Mrs Craigie, could not have been kinder and took great trouble to help us organise our day expeditions, lend us a map and find the best places to go to, including helping us book boat trips to Hoy and Rousay. Orkney is wonderful and the Craigies make it even better.

We were recommended to visit The Creel by some friends, and we were not disappointed. The rooms are very clean and comfortable, but the food is outstanding. The menu is limited, but nothing is a bother to Joyce and Alan who own and run the restaurant, and they go out of their way to make sure that everyone is happy, and enjoying their meal. Absolute fine dining, and not expensive at all given the quality of the food. And I would be remiss if I did not mention the home made muesli for breakfast! I have never tasted anything so delicious!!! If you are going to the Orkneys, then The Creel is a must. Thank you Alan and Joyce.

The menu is limited compared to the 'old days' but we had a fantastic meal here. It was a special meal to which we had been looking forward for a while and we were not disappointed. The menu was carefully designed to show off local produce and we did not feel that we suffered from lack of choice at all - everyone really enjoyed the meal. There was something for those who prefer fish and shellfish and something for the meat eaters. All in all delicious. We treated ourselves to a night away so that we could drink, and breakfast was really good too. Comfy beds and a good shower. Highly recommended. Well worth the detour and a little bit of planning. You do need to book ahead. Portion sizes were good and I thought it was good value.

There are just two choices of starter, main and dessert. The crab starter with apple mayonnaise, avocado salsa and picked cucumber was unusual but delicious. I give the Creel 5 stars for their food after our stay for dinner bed and breakfast in June 2015. We’d missed our scheduled ferry due to a serious RTA closing the A9 en route but the owners were very good in accommodating our late arrival for dinner. There was a limited menu of two choices for each of starter and main and then either a dessert or cheese. We were both delighted by our choices: the food was excellent. The breakfast next morning was also exceptional. Everything was served to order. The Creel well deserves it’s 2 rosette award. As it is described as a restaurant with rooms, we expected the focus to be on the food, and it was. However, our room was nicely decorated and furnished with a lovely view out to sea. The Creel is a great location for the Gill’s Bay ferry and for touring the southern part of the Orkney mainland. We would definitely stay again if in the area.

I have eaten here several times before but returned recently with 3 first-time visitors. We were all very impressed. The menu is limited, the wine list is not extensive and the decor and atmosphere are sober. But the cooking was faultless, using excellent raw materials like the North Ronaldsay lamb very effectively. On the basis of the two bottles we drank the wine list is very carefully chosen and good value. The service was professional and we enjoyed a friendly discussion with Mrs Craigie about the sourcing of oatcakes and the ingredients of black pudding. Altogether it was a most enjoyable evening. There are other good places to eat in Orkney, but I believe that The Creel is very hard to beat.

The Creel had been recommended by friends & we ate in the restaurant but did not stay overnight as we were renting a cottage on Mainland, Orkney. Our food was locally produced, well-presented and tasted great. One of us was driving so stuck to water and I had a couple of glasses of house wine which was fine. The menu has prices for 2 courses or three so you do not have to pay £40 for 2 courses. The prices for wine or coffee did not seem excessive to us. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

I stayed with my wife and kid at The Creel for a few days. Would I stay again? I wouldn't be against it, but I'd certainly look elsewhere first. The service was friendly, we were left to ourselves. But there was no feeling of warmth in the service at all.The room was clean and adequate, but the decor and style is all a bit dated, with floral bedspreads and twee pictures on the walls. Breakfast was good, with variety from a menu. Good Scottish foods. Enjoyable. We ate in the fabled restaurant once. From the minute I booked the rooms there was a slight push on us to book the restaurant, a push I felt was a little too pushy almost. My wife and I had travelled the world, eaten all over, from cheap to good, and The Creel's reputation goes before it. So we went with interest, but the £40 per head seems overpriced for a meal which whilst nice and tasty, was far from special, or memorable, or the best meal we've ever had. To be honest, it was only a few weeks ago and I forget the food and what I had, something meaty which was a bit heavy, and my wife had the seafood option which she says "was good, but..." Over priced I'd say. And the restaurant lacks any ambience or atmosphere. As someone else also wrote in reviews here, the not-so-faraway Skerries Bistro is a far better for a meal, with great location and ambience. We found it on our last night in Orkney, sadly or else we'd have eaten there again. The owners told me they are trying to sell, without luck, the Creel Hotel and restaurant and it kind of showed in the whole feeling of the place. It felt like their heart wasn't in it anymore.

We came full of expectation, but concluded that although the cooking was very good, delicious and well executed, the whole experience we felt didn't warranted the £40 per head + coffee and wine price tag. My wife and I chose the Creel on the basis of past TA reviews and were not disappointed. The menu is limited - two starters, two mains, two desserts - do not let this dissuade you from going. My wife had Orkney lamb in barley broth as a starter and pronounced it 'fabulous' and my crab with an avocado salsa was a close second. The halibut and squid main course continued the gastronomic experience while the lemon tart and marmalade ice cream dessert won get another TA admirer. The Creel resists increasing the menu and increasing the numbers of diners so a booking is essential - but do and it will add to your Orkney experience. And with the food enjoy the delightful ambience of St margatett's hope harbour.

St Margarets Hope is a quaint little village and this Hotel/Restaurant is on the front with good views into the bay. I am trying to avoid giving excellent ratings so please read this in context. There are few hotels with any character on orkney and this has some although the rooms are a little dated everything is clean and tidy with a good nights sleep. The food in the restaurant is excellent so my rating would probably be 4.5 but you can't rate that. Many have said it is pricey but please bear in mind that running a hotel on Orkney is a seasonal activity and St Margaret's hope is slightly off the tourist trail but absolutely worth the diversion.

TripAdvisor does not offer the option of enough stars to do The Creel justice. Even six or seven stars would not be enough. The menu for dinner provides a choice of two starters, two main courses and two desserts. This implies that the chef is confident in what is offered, and this confidence is well placed. We had a crab starter with an avocado and and pickled cucumber salsa. The flavours were perfectly matched. Nothing overpowered anything else which is quite an achievement with tastes as delicate as this. Then we had a main of scallops and plaice which was absolutely perfect. We did not have dessert, but that was because we had already eaten well at lunchtime and did not want to be too full. Both choices on the menu looked very enticing. The service was friendly and personal. Absolutely noting could be faulted. It is not cheap, but it was worth every penny. For a meal this good, it was very reasonably priced.

When you visit a seabound place of such awesome natural beauty, you expect great seafood, but what we experienced over a long weekend at the Creel in St Margaret's Hope exceeded all expectations. Alan and Joyce are genial hosts, welcoming and quietly confident in their modus operandi - to take the very best of what these wonderful islands have to offer and then gently and respectfully tending the ingredients into dishes that are as delicious as they are nourishing. As we were there for 3 nights, we experienced a different menu each evening, and were left in no doubt as to the skill of Alan's craft. Crab, scallop, skate, monkfish, plaice; all of first class providence, were cooked to perfection - as a group we have all dined well in a number of world renowned establishments, but no-one amongst us could think of an occasion when the skill of delivery was on a par with the sublime quality of the ingredients. But this happy marriage was not confined to Neptune's larder - the Ronaldsay mutton was a dish of tremendous flavour and heart, and even though Chef professed that the beast had been "off the beach" for too long, and therefore had lost some of its flavour, I have never had ovine fayre so good. Desserts were in the same vein, Eva's (thanks for coming in on a Sunday!) lemon tart pairing with Alan's marmalade ice-cream in another heavenly match, and just pipping the Ginger Pudding as favourite. Breakfasts were inevitably good as well; plump kippers, fierce porridge, hot smoked salmon or fortifying full breakfasts - one simply cannot go wrong. The overwhelming success of every dish that we sampled means that I find it hard to agree with complaints of a "limited menu" - the fact is, when every outcome is as good as we found, there is no wrong decision. Combined with Alan's careful sourcing of local ingredients, a commendable commitment to not being wasteful, and a one-man, from-scratch kitchen, to see many more choices would be unnecessary. I guess the fact that the diners were very happy with the choices they were "cornered" into is the telling factor.Orkney itself is a great land, and The Creel, in my view, it's finest treasure. We were unable to wrest ourselves away to eat anywhere else, such was the anticipation of what would be on the menu later. I'll be back for the spoots come Spring!

We both chose the brisket with mince and honeyed carrots and shallots and the meat was amazingly tender. The menu was 'safe' but tasty. Not to say the service was terrible or anything, but it was average, in a place where the food is amazing. We re-arranged the timing of our trip to Orkney just so we could go to this place and booked ahead etc. Food on offer was excellent, and some of it positively inspired. However, despite making it clear at time of booking and on all follow ups that one of the diners was gluten free, this still seemed to come as a surprise to our hostess. Not much thought had gone in to making allowances for this, although she did confirm that it was written in her booking record (only as we were paying the bill). So after that incident started going to the Foveran on the Orphir road out of Kirkwall, where the food and welcome is as good if not better, and at a far more reasonable price. The Creel has been for sale for some time so be aware that it may change hands soon, so future quality etc uncertain.... Could get better or worse, or stay the same.

Another couple and my wife & I stayed at The Creel with Alan and Joyce Craigie for a few days of our 10-day trip through Scotland and I can state categorically that it was the most relaxing atmosphere and most pampered I have felt in a long time. ALan is a magician!! The food coming out of his kitchen is simple yet wonderful. The seafood for dinner was fresh (no surprise there!) and prepared perfectly. Both dinners were memorable for their near perfection. We had to go back to the kitchen to toast his artistry! On the send-off day, for our breakfast, Alan prepared a smoked seafood risotto with a poached free-range egg on top that had all four of us in a mirthful food stupor. Wow! We didn't want to leave. If you are on the Orkney Islands, the Creel restaurant is the only choice!

We had a lovely meal in this restaurant. The crab starters looked very appetising and the combination of flavours was divine. The main of North Ronaldsay lamb was perfect. The star of the meal was without doubt the lemon tart with marmalade ice cream - the best lemon tart in the world? How do they get the pastry so thin and the filling so light! One slight criticism : the menu is very short and a little more choice would make this the perfect restaurant.

It's fair to say that the telephone contact wasn't the best we've ever had, but once we went to the restaurant it became clear she's just not very good on the phone - face to face she was fine. The choise of dishes is small (2 for each course), so the food has to be good and it was. Really good ingredients, excellent presentation and a friendly atmosphere. The best food in the Orkneys and probably North of Inverness!

We had eaten here before many years ago and it was outstanding. From reviews as recent as late 2012 guests were still happy, but we had a disaster........maybe we were unlucky. A dire greeting and grim service from a woman who did not seem interested and various very poorly prepared plates, local specialities fumbled and dropped. How can you get scallops so overcooked and flabby? How can you get N Ronaldsay lamb so tough? A risable bottle of wine for the price and those two courses for £33? We ate well at many other places on Mainland Orkney over the following 7 nights, all better, some far, far better. This was our first, worst and most expensive meal...........a grim night.

We were delighted with our stay at the Creel, which was a bit of a treat at the end of 12 days travelling in Caithness and Orkney. The welcome from Joyce was warm and friendly, as it was about lunchtime we were offered coffee and crab sandwiches, which my husband said was the best sandwich he could ever remember eating. Our room was number 2 at the front, large with three windows and a stunning view right out to sea, it was comfortable and immaculately clean. Eating at the Creel was indeed a treat, the menu is small but extremely good and the wine list looked great. I would recommend the seaweed fed North Ronaldsay mutton, which was very rich and tasty and must be hard to get hold of elsewhere. The seafood was very fresh and the bread home baked. It was a pleasure to talk to Alan, the chef, when he delivered our food, about where the produce comes from, showing his enthusiasm for excellent ingredients. We were lucky enough to eat breakfast at the Creel twice, the porridge, muesli and fish were all excellent, we didn't try the meat cooked breakfast. Our hosts were keen to help us make the most of our visit to St Margaret's Hope without being intrusive, and advised on good walks, even supplying a map. We liked the village very much, a ferry comes right into the little port from Scotland and we may well use it next time. We hope to be back.

Stayed in a great hotel in Kirkwall. Had heard about the Creel and read good reviews. 4 of us paid £25 taxi fare each way to go to this "special" restaurant. The food was OK. Definitely overpriced at £32 for 2 courses. Before choosing my starter and main course I asked 2 straight forward questions regarding the menu and the ingredients - remembering that there were only 3 starters and 3 mains ( which in itself was not a problem). The waitress didn't know the answer to either. I do now know what Tusk is, but it was the main ingredient!! My starter was lovely. A fish soup. The main was not great - brisket of beef. Very average for the price. My wife had an interesting take of pork terrine, which in our view didn't quite work.We had a laughable episode regarding potatoes with the main. One of my dining partners asked for extra potatoes saying we were happy to pay. When the main course arrived we asked the waitress for the extra potatoes, to be told the fact we had 2 potatoes on the plate meant we had already had the "extra"The restaurant must be good, but we had reasonable food and very average service. With wine our bill came to over £200. I can find good restaurants in London for that price, without the £50 travel cost.Likely to return to the Orkney Islands. Unlikely to return to this restaurant. Separately we went into the Belle Vue Inn, just along from the restaurant. Funny little place with a really nice owner, and a FANTASTIC juke box.....plays real records. 5 for 50p......

We arrived with such excitement having heard of Alan Craigie's superb food. We were not disappointed - the meal was one of the best we've ever had - fresh, full of flavour and faultless. He deserves a Michelin star without a doubt. The reason we can only give it 3 stars is due to the haste in which the food was served to us, the lack of a warm welcome from the lady waitress and no explanation of the menu or personal touches that make a dining experience worth having. We felt like intruders in someone's front room. Instead of repeating your choice from the menu she would contradict the description and the words used, making me feel quite undermined. The Trio of Fish starter was absolutely delicious, and before we knew it the mains were out. Again, the food was mind-blowingly tasty but no sooner had we eaten the last bite, the plates were cleared and the menu returned to us by the lady waitress with pad and paper in hand for us to make Dessert choices. It took the enjoyment right out of it as no time to sit, relax and digest. So all in all - Food is a 10 out of 10 but sadly service did no justice to the amazing talent of Alan Craigie.

I'd wanted to visit the Creel in the past whilst on holiday on Orkney, but as I don't drive didn't think it would be possible - until I found out that an excellent bus service would pick me up again around 22:15 and back to Kirkwall (or all stops to Stromness if you're headed in that direction.).My daughter and I arrived about 10 minutes before our booking - no problem, we were given our pick of the tables and ordered pre-dinner drinks. As previous reviewers have said, the choices on the menu are limited, but that is a good thing, especially when the food is so good. Let's be honest here, how often do we waste time trying to make a choice from about 10 starters, 15 mains and 12 starters? Less is definitely more. So, to the food. And fine food it is too. Daughter had the crab with apple mayonnaise and avocado starter followed by the brisket beef. All boxes were ticked for her. I opted for the soup which had plenty of chunky pieces of sea-food, My mains was halibut with lobster. Again, I found no fault with my choices. We both agreed that the presentation was wonderful - so much so that we weren't sure whether to photograph the food or eat it! I was surprised that my daughter couldn't manage a sweet course, but she did help me out with my rhubarb, marmalade and vanilla ice-cream with raspberries and strawberries. I also had a coffee. Total cost just nudged over the £100 mark, including a bottle of wine. Some reviewers had criticised the prices, but it's a fixed price menu so there shouldn't be any surprises on the bill. Not cheap, but price can be justified by the quality of food on offer. The service was great with just the right balance of politeness and friendliness. I also liked the lack of music. This meant that we could eat and converse discreetly without the distraction of 'muzak'. The fact that the tables were well spaced from each other also gave everyone a degree of privacy too.A word of caution though, I believe they are closed Mondays and Tuesday and I wouldn't recommend travelling without a reservation, so make a phone call to avoid disappointment.I can't comment on the negative responses others have made, but what I will say is that a number of diners on the night we visited had been before and seemed to be serious 'foodies' and I would doubt they would go somewhere low-quality. But don't take my word for it, try it for yourself and I'm sure you'll enjoy the experience.

To try to review a restaurant impartially where Keith Floyd, Rick Stein and Gary Rhodes have eaten is going to be a challenge in itself particularly if marking anything less than 5 stars. Suffice it say Joyce and Alan are tireless hosts and have a 26 year long heritage of producing fine food at the Creel. The food is undisputedly of the highest quality but at the price tag I think a little overpriced. Although not a gourmet I know what I like and can often see areas where even a great dish could be improved, for instance rather than serving brisket in one big lump why not slice it into mouthwatering sections thereby maximising the surface area so that more of the exquisite sauce can be savoured? Likewise a jug of table water should always be served with sections of lemon or lime to mask and alkalise any taste inherent in the water. Small points may be but at this level should we not expect perfection? I would recommend you try The Creel as their limited menu is a credit to them and should not be viewed as a disadvantage. I have however had equal and better taste experiences at similar and vastly cheaper prices. Let us not forget that the art of the chef is to astound us with their inventiveness and above all mastery of the taste palate regardless of their reputation. Recommended.

The menu was very short , only three choices for both the starters and the main course, and the food was good but not outstanding. Similarly, the food was well-presented but not wonderful. At £32 for two courses and £38 for three, we thought it was over-priced. These are prices we would expect in the Home Counties but the standard was not as high. The service, though, was friendly and we particularly noticed how welcoming the staff were to an Italian family with two very small children. We'd heard rave reviews about this restaurant and the chef exceeded our expectations. The price for the set menu is a bit steep but after tasting the food, it was worth every penny. Our starter of lamb neck meat from the famed seaweed-fed North Ronaldsay lamb, nestled in a delectable crust and edged with a barley-laden gravy, was exquisite and flavorful. The main course of scallops was a feast for the eyes as well as the palate; the chef's artful use of foam on the plate visually evoked the spume of the seashore while its taste of the sea complemented the perfectly-prepared shellfish on the plate. Beautiful and delicious! Be sure to make a reservation. It's a small place, and while we dined, we saw the staff turn away several disappointed parties who had not reserved ahead.

We had read a great deal of hype regarding the Creel restaurant in St. Margaret's Hope so naturally we were really looking forward to our dinner there. That was too bad - the best part of the evening was the drive over the bridges to get to the quaint town. Upon arrival we were ushered into an extremely small room to be offered the evening's menu and a drink. The wines by the glass were very ordinary and the room felt as though it is the waiting area for a doctor's office. The service during the meal was cold and the atmosphere, although the restaurant's dining room was nearly full, was funereal. The food was a let down although we did enjoy the halibut. I am sorry to have to write this but there are far better places to dine on Orkney - try the Foveran for a start.

My wife and I spent 10 days touring Orkney & Shetland in July. Dinner and a night's stay at The Creel in the gorgeously quaint St Margaret's Hope was a much anticipated highlight. Imagine our surprise (and irritation) when we were told on arrival that we had no reservation either for a room or a table - now we're back home, we have evidence of a confirmation for both. However, a table was made available and we were booked into the Murray Arms (less than 5 minutes walk from the restaurant). Dinner was fantastic, with the star course being the slow-cooked South Ronaldsay mutton - the sheep graze on seaweed, which gives a unique, pre-salted flavour. While having a post-dinner drink, we were told by locals that they frequently hear that both tables and rooms at the Creel are regularly double-booked. St Margaret's Hope is not on many people's doorstep and the food is great, so double check your reservation

If you had never eaten at the Creel, you might wonder how it possibly survives. It's a small restaurant, situated in the even smaller (but utterly charming) village of St Margaret's Hope on South Ronaldsay. We had planned to just turn up on the Tuesday evening that we wanted to eat there, assuming that it couldn't possibly be a problem to get a table in such a small quiet place. In fact, the hostess at our B+B recommended we book a table as it is so popular, and we got a table due to a cancellation, so I recommend you book well ahead of time!It is not only surviving, but seems to be thriving, producing a small but delicious menu of fresh, local food which is imaginative and beautifully cooked. As mentioned in other reviews, there is an emphasis on seafood, but there are also meat options, and as the spinach and courgette accompaniment to my hake main course was probably the most delicious vegetable concoction I've ever eaten, I think vegetarians would be more than adequately catered for here on request.Special mention should also go to the lemon tart, which was fantastic-go for it if it's on the menu when you're there!Other reviews have noted a disappointing atmosphere and criticised the level of service, also the failure of the chef to come to the table.I did not find this to be the case at all. There is certainly a very relaxed atmosphere, and I did not notice either background music, or an excessive quietness-possibly because the restaurant was full when I was there. However, we were one of the latter parties to leave, and I did not feel that the atmosphere was too quiet. The service was friendly, timely and unobtrusive, totally fitting with the relaxed informal feel of the dining room. When the chef is cooking as well as this one does, I for one have no objection at all if he stays in the kitchen! It's certainly not the cheapest meal you can get on Orkney, but it is easily one of the best, and in fact is good value for the quality of the cooking and ingredients. If you're on Orkney and in any way interested in good food, you should definitely pay a visit to the Creel, you won't be disappointed!

We had met Helen at the airport. She arranged the taxi to take us to the lighthouse, Jimmy driving. Later he collected us and drove us around the island explaining island life, community areas such as the churches, community centre and the now closed school, the bird observatory then back to the airport. It turns out that both the turmeric and the chai latte are made with syrup which has a ton of sugar in, certainly enough to be problematic for a diabetic. I wish places would have this marked on menus, or something! I was trying to think about what all would be suitable but the owner commented that he's not a mind reader, so I just ordered the turmeric latte after all. This isn't why I took a star off, that's because it's just a tad too small to be a sit-in cafe. My mum finds it too cramped, and doesn't like the chairs. It has nice quirky decor and had quite groovy music while we were in ordering our drinks. You can go along to the town hall if it's open, and drink your to-do drinks in the spacious comfy environment there, if you like things roomy. This is what we did, and I recommend it. It's really a nice wee place, I'm just not sure whether there's anything at all on the menu I can order without being unwell because of it. It has lots of tasty looking vegan snacks ans cakes and such available, which I'd be all about; except unfortunately for me they probably all have loads of sugar too. I'll need to ask the fellow who runs it, when I'm by there next. In conclusion, it's a nice peedie cafe with an eccentric ambience. I recommend it.
